On the surface, the Ya adaptation All Together Now may seem like something Netflix is releasing in an effort to capture the tween market. Sure, it’s adapted from a Ya novel and has an appealing young cast, but the secret weapon here is that it’s made by an old soul in Brett Haley. The filmmaker made his bones directing veteran actors and actresses who were due starring roles, like Sam Elliott and Blythe Danner, before recently moving towards younger skewing casts. Now, this latest effort of his shows how effective material potentially meant for a younger audience can be in the right hands. Haley’s sure nature and talented direction makes this a family friendly but wholly effective work that’s absolutely heartwarming. The film is a drama, based on the novel Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick. Amber Appleton (Auli’i Cravalho) is the kind of...

Filmmaker Brett Haley doesn’t trade in hip cynicism. The director of such low-key charmers as “The New Year,” “The Hero,” and “Hearts Beat Loud” is interested in telling stories about good-hearted people persevering in the face of tough circumstances. Even his happiest endings are tinged with a believable bit of sadness, but they are still just that: happy endings. His latest, the tender dramedy “All Together Now,”
High school senior Amber Appleton isn’t just a do-gooder, she’s a do-everythinger. She’s got a gig teaching Esl to a pack of older immigrants, a job at an old folks’ home (where Carol Burnett’s delightfully crochety Joan lives), another job at a local donut shop (managed by a dude she just tutored through his Ged accreditation process), and she appears to be her high school’s most reliable crusader for all manner of issues (from supporting the drama...

Hearts Beat Loud is a film that presents evidence that perhaps the oldest and trustiest of adages might be wrong from time to time. Maybe, just maybe, a book can occasionally be judged by its cover. After all, impressions derived from a single still or frame of Hearts Beat Loud would likely stir up a rather fair and accurate impression as to its tone.
It is the Zooey-est and the Deschanel-iest of films not to grace Ms Deschanel herself. Cut from slightly more offbeat, kooky and whimsical cloth, Hearts Beat Loud will no doubt offer a comforting embrace around the shoulders for those who like their dramedies so. Written and directed by Brett Haley, we are presented with ageing dreamer and single father Frank (Nick Offerman), whose record store is a vibrant but money-hemorrhaging unit. His young, talented daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) is facing her final summer before she cuts...

We’ve now entered the second half of the year. 2018 so far has yet to really produce any surefire Academy Award players, but that doesn’t mean nothing will make it to the end. As we always do around this time, it’s a good moment to consider what Oscar contenders the first six months of the year could possibly produce. In some years, the Sundance Film Festival helps lead the way. This year, however, while our list will feature some Sundance alums, no movie or performance feels obvious for contention. The ones that do, more or less, are feeling safe due to being in lesser categories, like Best Animated Feature or Best Documentary Feature. Anyway, read on for more… First up, a small bit of history. Last year, Baby Driver, Beauty and the Beast, The Big Sick, The Boss Baby, Call Me By Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out,...

Chicago – There is no better Father’s Day present at the movies than director Brett Haley’s new film, “Hearts Beat Loud.” It’s the story of a single Dad, portrayed by Nick Offerman, dealing with his about-to-go-to-college daughter. The riff in the film is that they are also songwriters together, and that becomes a major conflict.

Offerman expands his acting muscles with this role, showing many different sides to his guilt-ridden father character. Supporting him is rising star Kiersey Clemons, who believably handles both a vulnerable teenager and confident singer/songwriter. Their relationship is typical of the leaving-the-nest elements that parents and teens endure, but their connection as songwriters make the relationship unique.

A week ahead of Fathers Day weekend, Gunpowder & Sky is opening Hearts Beat Loud starring Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons as a dad/daughter musical duo. Also featuring Ted Danson and Toni Colette, the title will open in New York and L.A. before expanding next week. Focus Features is opening Mr. Rogers Sundance fest doc Won’t You Be My Neighbor? in what will very likely be a formidable contender for documentary kudos come Awards season. Before “Hearts Beat Loud” screened for the first time at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, director Brett Haley strutted to the stage to speak. While introductions to a film often feel more obligatory than necessary, Haley leaned into sincerity. He explained that in these chaotic times, he wanted to make a “sweet movie.” The kind of film “that makes you feel good and helps to forget your problems for 90 minutes.”
What he wanted is what we received. For the duration of “Hearts Beat Loud,” you’ll often attempt to unearth the stakes. You’ll wonder when tragedy may strike, or if plans will go dangerously awry. Here’s a not-so surprising spoiler: They don’t.
Written by Haley and frequent collaborator Marc Basch, the story begins inside Red Hook Records, a Brooklyn vinyl shop operated by Frank (Nick Offerman). He’s a single father to Sam (Kiersey Clemons), who...

Never underestimate a film that can leave you with a warm feeling on the inside. Crowd pleasing cinema is like chicken soup…it’s just good for you. Brett Haley is a master at this. The writer/director has been forging an incredibly underrated career, one that a few decades ago would have made him an A-list auteur. Regardless, he’s sure to get his due this week, as his latest movie Hearts Beat Loud is about to open. A hit at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, it’s one of the year’s best films, bar none. Emotional and warm in the way a fantastic hug can be, this is a cinematic experience that may well take your breath away. A music fill dramedy, Hearts Beat Loud tells the story of a Brooklyn based father and his daughter in the summer before the latter leaves for college. In a matter of almost magical alchemy,...

Under the radar, filmmaker Brett Haley has been doing something rather impressive. Haley has been making independent films that people actually go to see in theaters. With the one two punch of I’ll See You In My Dreams and The Hero over the last few years, the director has made movies about older characters that audiences seek out. They’re crowd pleasing indies that shoot their lead actors or actresses into the awards conversation. That used to be a thing plenty of auteurs did, but these days it’s fairly rare. Now, Haley is back again with a slightly younger skewing film, and a musical one at that. Hearts Beat Loud made a lot of noise at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and now has a Trailer to increase the buzz. You can see that at the bottom of the post, but first, some more on the movie.

Not many teenagers would want to be in a band with their dad — but if your dad was Nick Offerman, you’d might reconsider. In the debut trailer for Hearts Beat Loud, we see the first look at the musically-driven father-daughter film that warmed hearts at Sundance earlier this year.
Directed by Brett Haley (The Hero, I’ll See You In My Dreams, Hearts Beat Loud follows single dad Frank (Offerman) as he prepares to send his daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) off to UCLA while confronting the realization that his record-store business is failing. In the trailer above, we see that they have a strong father-daughter relationship and share a love of music. The two have a weekly “jam sesh” that Frank wants to turn into a full-fledged band — but Sam isn’t too keen on it. After some speed bumps along the way, they eventually become a musical duo...

Hearts Beat Loud, directed by Sundance mainstay Brett Haley, is a film made of optimism. Starring the immensely likable Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons, it tells the story of a father and daughter who bond during the summer before she leaves for college by starting a band together. Set and shot in Red Hook, Brooklyn, this film is often slight but always welcoming. The two leads have a pleasant chemistry that elevates each exchange and build out a meaningful–and meaningfully deep–relationship that’s easy to engage with and root for.
Frank (Offerman) is a single dad closing his record store, much to the dismay of his landlady Leslie (Toni Collette), who has got more than a passing interest in her tenant. Chicago – The great character actor Sam Elliott – known mostly for his cowboy roles in film/TV and his unique bass sounding voiceovers – gets an opportunity to deliver a nuanced and emotional performance as a hyper-realized version of himself. There is virtue and truth in this character journey.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The screenplay, by director Brett Haley and Marc Basch, is brilliantly in line with Elliott’s particular breed of Hollywood character actor. In addition, Elliott’s character has some regrets, and buries it under a cloud of marijuana smoke. All of the tics and situations are handled expertly by Elliott, showing a range of performance that had never been seen from him before… it is his greatest role. Also, the vulnerability of his persona is on full display, which creates a subtlety in the story that is welcome… life isn’t predictable, and it’s refreshing to see the cinema reflect that value. Brett Haley will be a director to watch for many years, as he ponders the expectations of life.
Lee Hayden (Elliott) is a 72-year-old character actor – known mostly for playing cowboys over the years. He is a bit washed up, but can supplement his divorced man lifestyle with voiceover gigs. His leisure includes pot smoking, so conveniently his dealer Jeremy (Nick Offerman) lives in his apartment complex. His life takes a turn when he gets some bad health news, and simultaneously meets Charlotte (Laura Prepon), a stand-up comic.
He takes Charlotte to a low-rent Cowboy Honoree event, where he receives a Lifetime Achievement Award. High on dope and Ecstasy, Lee makes an amazing acceptance speech that goes viral. He’s suddenly a hot commodity again, and uses the notoriety to ignore his health issues… part of which involves his estranged daughter Lucy (Krysten Ritter). The next phase is assessment and acceptance of his life.
“The Hero” was released in Chicago on June 16th, nationwide by July 4th. See local listings for theaters and show times. Featuring Sam Elliott, Laura Prepon, Krysten Ritter, Nick Offerman, Katherine Ross and Max Gail. Written by Brett Haley and Marc Basch. Directed by Brett Haley. Rated “R”

Chicago – The familiar character actor and voiceover artist, Sam Elliott, has been breaking out in that latter part of his career. Known for his cowboy roles, smooth bass-tone voice and epic mustache, the icon has been seen lately in diverse roles in “Grandma,” “Digging for Fire,” “Grace and Frankie” and his latest – and perhaps greatest – “The Hero.”

It's fitting that you hear the voice first. Even if the name Sam Elliott somehow doesn't ring a bell, you definitely know that gravelly baritone, the same one that's graced everything from Dodge Ram commercials to Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski's stoner escapades. When we meet up with him in The Hero, the man with the world's greatest living mustache is in a sound booth, recording an TV spot for a BBQ sauce: "The per-fect pardner for your chick-en." An unseen director keeps asking for one more take; Elliott's character, a...

It’s always a pleasure when the best new release of a given week also happens to be the best film of the year so far. This week, just such an occasion is upon us with the release of The Hero. A truly wonderful flick, this is the sort of picture that reminds you of the power of cinema, especially when a central performance anchors it all. Here, that performance belongs to Sam Elliott, who will absolutely blow you away. This is work that goes beyond awards worthy. It certainly is, but it’s also something that marks a high water mark on an already impressive career. Prepare to be stunned by Elliott and The Hero in a big way. The feel-good comedy "I'll See You in My Dreams" is the first of this year's Oscar contenders to be sent out to voters. The screeners of the first feature for Brett Haley, who co-wrote with Marc Basch, arrived in mailboxes this week. Blythe Danner plays a widow who embarks on an unlikely friendship with her pool maintenance man (Martin Starr), pursues a new love interest (Sam Elliott), and reconnects with her daughter (Malin Akerman). After a warm reception at Sundance, this charmer geared to the Aarp crowd was released in May to standout reviews (an impressive 94 at Rotten Tomatoes) and a healthy haul of $7.2 million. -Break- Bleecker Street is taking a page from the campaign playbook of those savvy folks over at The Weinstein Company. Last year an arm of that company, Radius, was first to the mailboxes at about this same time with a screener of "Snowpiercer." While that sci-fi pic didn'.

Into the noisy chaos of summertime at the multiplex, offering a quiet diversion from the super-heroes and natural disasters, is a gentle comedy/drama/romance aimed at a most neglected movie audience: the seniors. Or, the Aarp crowd, if you will. Their favored flicks usually arrive in the later part of the year (for Oscar noms), or in the early Spring/late Winter. The studio execs are often stunned when this demographic embraces a film. Such was the case with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which even inspired a recent sequel in addition to several Us mature pairings like And So It Goes. And in TV-land, those “Golden Girls” continue their popularity in endless reruns. This new film zeroes in on one such “golden gal” (well, she does have three BFFs) and provides a veteran actress of stage, screen, and TV with the role of a lifetime as the main...

Chicago – Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you, if you’re the main character in “I’ll See You in My Dreams.” Blythe Danner portrays a long-time widow whose routine is set, but life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. The series of extraordinary events are life lessons, at a point in life where class is dismissed.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The film rises and falls on the shoulders of Ms. Danner, and she wavers on how much she is up to the challenge. The film is a bit of a tease, dangling the pool boy in front of the still sultry Ms. D., but it essentially is a slice of life, with more ordinariness – sometimes to its disadvantage – than show-off drama. It’s the type of story that when it works best, it really works, but when it doesn’t, it’s not that annoying.

Dream a Little Dream of Me: Haley’s Superb Showcase for Blythe Danner
Long a supporting fixture in a variety of film projects going on five decades, actress Blythe Danner takes center stage in an endearingly warm turn in I’ll See You in My Dreams, the sophomore film from Brett Haley. Premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, it’s a familiar narrative enhanced by an adept script that focuses on character nuance rather than cheap laughs, and proves that even the grayest of predictable tropes can still be administered in an emotionally authentic manner.
Discovering that her dog is ill and must be put down, retired schoolteacher and widow of twenty years Carol Petersen (Danners) is left with a nagging void. She develops an unexpected friendship with Lloyd (Martin Starr), the new pool cleaner that attempts to help her rid the home of an unwanted rodent. Over several glasses of wine,...

There’s an intriguing fakeout near the beginning of I’ll See You In My Dreams if you’ve read the plot synopsis of Brett Haley’s film, which reads: “A sudden loss disrupts Carol’s orderly life, propelling her into the dating world for the first time in 20 years. Finally living in the present tense, she finds herself swept up in not one but two unexpected relationships that challenge her assumptions about what it means to grow old.”
When Carol (Blythe Danner) wakes up alone in bed with her dog Hazel, you assume it is her husband that is gone. That’s not the case, as he died 20 years earlier. It’s her dog that dies, putting the plot into motion. Sadly, Blythe Danner doesn’t go full John Wick...

Last year’s slate of seventeen Narrative Premieres (excluding secret screenings of Boyhood and Nymphomaniac: Vol. I) refreshingly included works from first time filmmakers. I hadn’t seen it coming but Little Accidents and The One I Love were included among the likes of Calvary, Frank and Love is Strange. 2015 will be a true we Swanberg family affair with Joe Swanberg joining wife Kris (Unexpected) with a feature as well in Digging for Fire. James Ponsoldt is officially four for four with Sundance — his latest End of the Tour should be a slam dunk for the Eccles. Sticking to the numbers game… we’ll have a lovely bedfellow pairings of Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s already announced The Stanford Prison Experiment which is going to be mentioned in many loglines alongside Michael Almereyda’s Experimenter - about the Milgram experiment. Among the filmmaking duos we were expecting, we find Mississippi Grind...
