The Dirt: What Netflix Gets Right About The True Story (As Told By Mötley Crüe)
Image
Adapting the biography of a singular figure is hard enough, but how do you adapt the autobiography of a band? Bassist Nikki Sixx, guitarist Mick Mars, drummer Tommy Lee, and Vince Neil joined forces to make Mötley Crüe, one of the most successful bands of the 1980s and well-documented hedonist troublemakers.

In 2001, all four members of the band along with Neil Strauss released an autobiography called "The Dirt," describing the group as "the world's most notorious rock band." The book shot to the top 10 on the New York Times Best Seller list and stayed there for 10 weeks. On a personal note, I used the book as the subject of my own freshman year biography project book report in 2004, when I showed up to school dressed like Nikki Sixx and delivered my presentation in full character ... much to my teacher's chagrin.

In 2019, Netflix adapted "The Dirt" with "Jackass" creator and director Jeff Tremaine at the helm,...

‘Queer Eye’ Wins Structured Reality Award as Creative Arts Emmys Kicks Off with Night One (Full Winners List)
Image
Netflix’s “Queer Eye” won its third consecutive Emmy for outstanding structured reality show, and two different “Apollo” projects won big as the Emmy Awards kicked off on Monday night with the first of five nights of Creative Arts awards.

The Creative Arts Emmys, which is normally an in-person event at the Microsoft Theatre over two nights the weekend before the Primetime Emmy telecast, will instead take place Sept. 14 to Sept. 17, and again on Sept. 19, all hosted by Nicole Byer (“Nailed It”).

“There’s nothing normal about 2020, it’s wild,” Byer said. “If you don’t like me now, you’re not going to like me for the next four days, I’m sorry!”

Monday night’s special included presenters such as Jim and Jeannie Gaffigan, Drew Scott, Daryl Chill Mitchell, Gina Carano, Rob Riggle, RuPaul and Jb Smoove. Kareem Abdul Jabbar noted that below-the-line jobs in Hollywood still have...

How Amanda Adelson Went From “Accidentally” Directing A Kanye West Video To Shaping ‘Beastie Boys Story’ With Spike Jonze – Q&a
Image
Beastie Boys Story, released by AppleTV+ in April and nominated for five Emmys, tells the story of the band that was formed in 1978 by Adam Yauch, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.

The film, directed by long-time collaborator Spike Jonze, was not your usual rock doc. It was told via a live show put on by Diamond and Horovitz (Yauch passed away in 2012) following the release of their memoir Beastie Boys Book.

Back in April, the film’s press tour was dominated by Diamond and Horovitz joking through interviews with a bit of context from Jonze, who first worked with the band in 1993 on their Time For Livin’ video.

But one of the people instrumental in the film who was not particularly visible was Jonze’s creative producing partner Amanda Adelson, who helped write the film in addition to producing it.

Adelson (left), who below with Jonze discusses how the doc came about,...

Beastie Boys and Spike Jonze Talk New Apple TV+ Documentary: ‘Fame Was Like an Extra-Large Bag of Fritos’
Mike D, Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch, and Beastie Boys in Beastie Boys Story (2020)
Between the Beastie Boys’ retrospective book (“Beastie Boys Book”), their 2018 “event tour” (featuring readings and Q&a) and “Beastie Boys Story” documentary — which comes out Friday on Apple TV+ — one might wonder what’s left to talk about. But Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Mike “D” Diamond — the third Beastie Boy, Adam “McA” Yauch,” died of cancer in 2011 — along with film director, longtime video collaborator and friend Spike Jonze, did a round of Zoom interviews Monday to promote the film (which was reviewed here by Variety’s Owen Gleiberman).

The conversation — where 10 interviewers got to ask one question each — was, not surprisingly, highly entertaining and all over the place, so an edited and condensed Q&a follows.

Jonze started things off by saying what made the film special for him. “I like the idea of trying to make something that represented all the things I love about them and their band,...

Beastie Boys Story Trailer Promises a Living, Loving Tribute
Mike D, Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch, and Beastie Boys in Beastie Boys Story (2020)
The Beastie Boys are real life examples of why you fight for your right to party. They came together on the Lower East Side and conquered Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten, from the Battery to the top of Manhattan before they caught on worldwide.

Their story gets the documentary treatment with Beastie Boys Story, which premieres globally on Apple TV+ on April 24 with the IMAX Experience hitting theaters on April 2.

You can watch the trailer here:

In the live documentary experience, Beastie Boys Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz will tell “intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship,” according to their press release. The documentary was written and directed by their “longtime friend and collaborator, and loud chewer,” filmmaker Spike Jonze, who also produced alongside Grammy winner Jason Baum and Amanda Adelson. Go back in time with the Ad-Rock, Mike D and McA in the trailer for their new documentary film “Beastie Boys Story,” which is coming to Apple TV+ next month.

Spike Jonze directed the film, described as a live documentary experience, which mixes a stage show presentation from Beastie Boys members Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) talking about their personal journey forming the band with the late Adam Yauch (McA) and their 40 years of friendship.

“Now here’s a little story that I got to tell about three bad brothers that you know so well,” a young Mike D crudely raps in old home movie footage shown in the trailer. “It started way back in history with Ad-Rock, McA, and me, Mike D.”

Spike Jonze’s “Beastie Boys Story” will no longer have its world premiere at the now-canceled SXSW Film Festival, but the documentary is still on course for its month-long April rollout courtesy of Apple TV+. The streaming platform has debuted the official trailer for “Beastie Boys Story,” which marks Jonze’s first theatrical release since “Her.” The documentary is based on group members Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz’s bestselling “Beastie Boys Book.” The movie’s April debut will mark the the 26th anniversary of the release of Beastie Boys’ #1 album “Ill Communication.”

Beastie Boys Story Trailer Drops the Beat in IMAX
Spike Jonze at an event for Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak (2009)
Apple TV+ has unveiled the full-length trailer for Spike Jonze's Beastie Boys Story. The footage is nearly 3 minutes-long and gives Beastie boys and girls a much better idea of what to expect. In late 2018, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond released their long-awaited memoir and celebrated with some extremely limited live speaking gigs with their long-time DJ Mix Master Mike providing the soundtrack. Spike Jonze was in attendance at the first Los Angeles event and decided that they should collaborate on a documentary based on their live gigs. And largely, it seems that the bulk of the movie will be in that live documentary format.

According to the press release, Beastie Boys Story features Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz as they "tell you an intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship in this live documentary experience directed by their longtime friend and collaborator, and loud chewer,...

Beastie Boys Story Trailer Brings First Look at Spike Jonze's Apple TV+ Documentary
Apple has revealed the first trailer for Beastie Boys Story. We learned earlier this month that Oscar-winner Spike Jonze had a new documentary on the legendary group set to premiere later this year. Now, we have a little look at what that's going to entail, and it looks to be an intimate, unique experience. How, precisely, it will play out remains to be seen, but it's promised that this will be a "live documentary experience" from director Spike Jonze and the surviving members of the Beastie Boys.

The Spike Jonze directed teaser kicks off with a rendition of the group's hit song Paul Revere while archival clips of Mike D, McA and Ad-Rock play. We then see Mike " Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock' Horovitz take the stage to present clips to a live audience. It appears Spike Jonze, who directed the group's famous video for Sabotage, isn't taking a...

Spike Jonze's Beastie Boys Documentary Goes to Apple TV+, Gets Limited IMAX Run
Spike Jonze at an event for Tell Them Anything You Want: A Portrait of Maurice Sendak (2009)
Spike Jonze's Beastie Boys Story documentary will land on Apple TV+ after some IMAX exclusive screenings. Early last year, it was revealed that Jonze was working with surviving members Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond, along with actor/producer Jonah Hill. At the time, it appeared to be a different take on their Beastie Boys Book stage shows they were doing. The new documentary will have those elements thrown into the mix, but filtered through the mind of Spike Jonze, which should make for a memorable experience.

The Beastie Boys documentary finds Michael Diamond, aka Mike D, continuing his relationship with Apple. Diamond currently hosts an Apple Radio show title the Echo Chamber. A special cut of the documentary will open exclusively in select Imax theaters on April 3rd in a limited release before dropping on Apple TV+ on April 24th. It's not clear what will be added to the "special cut,...

Apple TV Plus has nabbed rights to “Beastie Boys Story,” a documentary about the legendary rap trio produced by Spike Jonze.

The movie features Beastie Boys Adam Horovitz and Mike Diamond discussing the group’s 40-year friendship and rise to fame as hip-hop exploded in the late 1980s. “Beastie Boys Story” is set to debut in Imax theaters on April 3 and will be available via Apple TV Plus on April 24.

The film was a byproduct of Horvitz and Diamond’s work on the retrospective “Beastie Boys Book,” which was released by Random House in 2018. Jonze, known for such features as 2013’s “Her” and 1999’s “Being John Malkovich,” has a long history with the group, having directed the...

‘The Dirt’ Review (Netflix)
Stars: Machine Gun Kelly, Douglas Booth, Daniel Webber, Iwan Rheon, Alyssa Marie Stilwell, Matthew Underwood, Kathryn Morris, Vince Mattis, Courtney Dietz | Written by Amanda Adelson, Rich Wilkes | Directed by Jeff Tremaine

The Dirt, directed by Jackass alumni Jeff Tremaine, is your ultra-conventional biopic that charts the rise, fall and ultimately rise again of cult status glam rock band Mötley Crüe. Tremaine’s film and his first outside of the realm of directing Knoxville and the likes starts as it means to go on, with poorly injected energy, a terrible introductory voiceover and deeply troubling misogynistic undertones.

If you can make it through the ten introductory minutes of The Dirt you can probably achieve anything in life. I’m serious when I say that if it doesn’t turn your stomach or make you blush, feel free to dive into A Serbian Film, In the Realm of the Senses or any...

‘The Dirt’ Review: Too Fast for Love — and Facts, Fans, Fun
Colson Baker, Douglas Booth, Daniel Webber, and Iwan Rheon in The Dirt (2019)
Are you fucking kidding me?!

You probably uttered this statement in awe at least a few times, dear readers of The Dirt, when you picked up Motley Crue’s 2001 memoir about their life and times as world-class degenerates. Less a biography than a police rap sheet in book form, it’s the sort of glorious backstage tell-all that makes you feel like you can’t turn the pages fast enough; only Hammer of the Gods can compete with it as the ultimate tale of rock stars outdoing Roman emperors in terms of debauchery.

“The Dirt” Is As Nasty As Its Namesake
Usually, biopics like to focus on prestigious figures. Artists, musicians, politicians, basically historical individuals of all stripes. Every so often, however, a film seeks to look at a horse of a different color. That can be a breath of fresh air, seeing a cinematic depiction of an unusual public figure or figures. Unfortunately, in the case of The Dirt, this biopic is complete and utter trash. We live in divided times, but hopefully cinema fans of all shapes and sizes, let alone political affiliations, can come together and realize how terrible this flick is. Dirt is an apt description of this one, and that’s putting it mildly. The movie is a biopic about the band Mötley Crüe. Based on an autobiography written by the band members, this claims to be “an unflinching tale of success and excess as four misfits rise from the streets of Hollywood to the heights of international fame.

Film Review: ‘The Dirt’
Colson Baker, Douglas Booth, Daniel Webber, and Iwan Rheon in The Dirt (2019)
A long time ago, the words sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll carried a hint of danger. The lifestyle did, too, but I’m talking about the phrase. It used to sound cool (back around the time the word “cool” sounded cool). But sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll has long since passed into the realm of vintage American catch-phrase banality, like “How’s that workin’ out for you?” And “The Dirt,” the new Netflix rock biopic about the sordid, squalid saga of Mötley Crüe, the royal hair-metal sleaze gods of the ’80s and ’90s, is a movie that reflects the new harmless status of that phrase.

“The Dirt” boils over with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, whether it’s Vince Neil (Daniel Webber), the snaky leader singer of Mötley Crüe, acting like a horny jackrabbit as he enjoys a backstage boink with every woman who comes near him,...

‘The Dirt’ Review: Netflix Gives Mötley Crüe Their Very Own ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
Andy Warhol
As Andy Warhol famously never said: “In the future, every arena-sized music act of the 20th century will get its own ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ for 115 minutes.” The truth of those apocryphal words was obvious even before the execrable Queen biopic grossed almost a billion dollars; the age of infinite content doesn’t offer enough bandwidth for actual creation, so most of our pop culture has to be exhumed from the past (a phenomenon made literal by the sustained explosion of true crime stories). It was all fun and games — sequels and reboots — until someone figured out that music could be a magic bullet for mainstream biopics, and then — wham! — the next thing we knew, Rami Malek had won Best Actor for cosplaying as Freddie Mercury in a movie that supposedly directed itself.

This might not be so bad if every band got the “Bohemian Rhapsody” that it deserved. By that logic,...

‘The Dirt’ Review: Netflix’s Mötley Crüe Memoir Pic Flaccid & Bleached Clean
Colson Baker, Douglas Booth, Daniel Webber, and Iwan Rheon in The Dirt (2019)
Spoiler Alert: This review contains details of the movie version of The Dirt

Having taken decades to make it to the screen, you kind of knew any adaptation of Mötley Crüe’s 2001 memoir The Dirt was going to be problematic, to put it politely.

Infamy has a tiring tendency to downgrade over time to just being lame, which truly is the greatest praise one can heap on this Jeff Tremaine directed pic that debuted today on Netflix. Perhaps due from the limited requirements of his past gigs helming the often hilarious but plotless Jackass movies, Tremaine delivers set-ups in The Dirt, but no actual story besides an elongated Behind The Music.

The fact is Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, ankylosing spondylitis suffering Mick Mars and Vince Neil deserved better. On board as producers, the battle-scarred bass player, drummer, guitarist and singer have earned a movie that confessionally puts it all out there,...

The Dirt Review
If you’re a fan of Mötley Crüe, then you’ll probably love the movie they made about themselves.

Early on in The Dirt, Mötley Crüe lead guitarist Mick Mars (Iwan Rheon) turns to the camera. “This didn’t actually happen,” he says of the scene that’s just transpired, which involves the band meeting future manager Doc McGhee (David Costabile) at a house party. “Doc never came to this filthy shithole. We met him at the Santa Monica Civic Center after a show.”

On the one hand, it’s a fleetingly sweet attempt to credit McGhee’s business partner, Doug Thaler, who also helped to manage the band. On the other hand, it’s one of many attempts by the filmmakers to make sure the audience knows that yes, this is just a movie, and no, not everything that happens onscreen is going to be based on the truth.

‘Terror In Tinseltown’: Mötley Crüe Manager & Exec Producer Allen Kovac On ‘The Dirt’s 18-Year Journey To Screen
Colson Baker, Douglas Booth, Daniel Webber, and Iwan Rheon in The Dirt (2019)
It’s taken eighteen years for Motley Crue biopic The Dirt to go from print to screen. Long-time manager Allen Kovac, who is exec producing the Netflix feature film, tells Deadline why it took so long to adapt the memoir and how they wanted to create “Boogie Nights-meets-Goodfellas” set in the debaucherous world of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

The film, which debuts on the Svod platform on March 22, tells the story of notorious Sunset Strip glamrockers Motley Crue – Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars and is based on Neil Strauss’ book The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, which was published in 2001.

It’s a raucous story that includes rampant drug abuse – Sixx was famously pronounced dead after a heroin overdose – manslaughter – Neil killed his passenger in a 1985 drunk driving accident – and the film opens with a graphic oral sex scene involving Tommy Lee.

Watch First Trailer for Motley Crue Biopic ‘The Dirt’
Netflix has dropped the first trailer for its Motley Crue biopic “The Dirt” — based on Neil Strauss’ best-selling history of the legendarily bad-behaved ‘80s metal icons — and it looks like the film pulls no punches in terms of the band’s famously sordid history.

In this two-minute trailer, we get glimpses of singer Vince Neil’s 1984 car wreck that killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle (as well as the death from cancer of Neil’s 4-year-old daughter several years later), bassist/songwriter Nikki Sixx’s heroin addiction, guitarist Mick Mars’ age and degenerative bone disease, and Tommy Lee’s marriage to TV star Heather Locklear and all-around unhinged behavior.

Industry insiders will probably be tickled to see “SNL” star Pete Davidson as the band’s A&R man, Tom Zutaut.

While much of this territory has been covered in the VH1 “Behind the Music” on the group, judging by the trailer the...

Motley Crue Biopic ‘The Dirt’ Brings Anarchy in First Trailer for Netflix Film (Video)
Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, la historia de Freddie Mercury (2018)
If you thought the story of “Bohemian Rhapsody” was nuts, “The Dirt” and its look at the formation of Mötley Crüe will really rock you.

Mötley Crüe was one of the most notorious ’80s hair metal bands in the country, arguably known more for their antics offstage and their lavish, outrageous performances than their music. “The Dirt,” a new music biopic based on the salacious autobiography by the band and Neil Strauss, taps into that insanity.

“The fans? They’re dying for some anarchy. So let’s give it to them,” one of the bandmates says in the film.

Netflix is currently working on a biopic that chronicles the career of Motley Crue, one of the biggest and most recognizable rock bands of all time. Though Ozzy Osbourne wasn't directly involved with the group, Motley Crue toured with the Black Sabbath frontman on one of their early tours and is going to be included in the biopic.

The Dirt will primarily focus on Motley Crue's rise to fame in the 80s, which was when Ozzy Osbourne was at the height of his powers as a rock n roll icon. Ozzy had his fair share of struggles with alcohol and substance abuse, which also plagued the various members of Motley Crue. So this is sure to be a big part of Ozzy's inclusion in the movie.
