- When production started, Shaun was in a romantic relationship with the actress who would go on to play the lead part of Laura in High on the Hog, but she wasn't cast at first. Shaun left the set and the state of Illinois before filming began for a family emergency when the actress who was originally cast to play Laura was fired. When he found out Shaun persuaded Siarra Mong to talk to the producers about landing the role for herself. They loved her audition, but the producers decided to turn Siarra away because the makeup designer had already created the scars for a person with a lighter skin tone. Shaun reminded Siarra how she was a good makeup designer herself, and she went off, alone in their RV, and with a few drug-store ingredients she created new scars. Sure enough, she earned the part that way.
- When Shaun takes on a new role in a film or theatre piece, he is dedicated completely. He is known to pick up his entire life and move to the city where the character is from and start living as that character.
- For the film High on the Hog, Shaun uprooted his life from Chicago to the town of Galena, Illinois. He lived there in that small town the way he felt his character, Hank, would have lived. As Hank, he used a shovel to dig a foundation, renovated the inside of recently flooded homes, and even negotiated a part-time job in a coffee shop similar to Hank's actual job in the film. He spent three months preparing Hank for this film.
- As a reporter, Shaun often interviews people around him. He has an arsenal of interviews with High on the Hog cast and crew. Cast and crew interviews include Joe Estevez, Adam Budron, Jesse C. Boyd, Walt Sloan, Joette Waters, Danny Glen, Robert Z'Dar, Robert Patrick Stern, and others.
- During filming for a scene in High on the Hog, legendary actor Robert Z'Dar (playing the Mayor) broke character and interrupted the shoot to complain about Shaun's acting style. He said the way Shaun (as Hank) tripped over his own feet reminded him too much of Anthony Perkins as Hitchcock's Norman Bates. After the scene, the two costars hit it off. Shaun was given the chance to pal around with Robert, driving him home to Dubuque, Iowa. He was seen helping Robert with his luggage, and even checking to see if there were ghosts in the empty room above Robert's apartment.
