Murder mysteries have been popular in pop culture for nearly a century. However, there’s been a recent renaissance on this front with playful films like Knives Out, A Haunting in Venice, Bodies Bodies Bodies, the Scream franchise, and the prominence of the true-crime genre and armchair detectives. That being said, an underrated and evergreen source of murder mystery hijinks that’s entertained audiences for 75 years is Hasbro and Parker Brothers’ Clue.

More than just a dramatist and storyteller, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (“Brokeback Mountain”) is an innovator in the vein of James Cameron and has always been quick to test new filmmaking technologies. Lee has been eager to experiment with early motion capture technologies, as he did the mo-cap himself for his movie “The Hulk” and the exceptional 3D and CGI used in his acclaimed “Life of Pi.” More recently, the filmmaker embraced things like 3D and high frame rates in his films “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” However, in a recent interview with IndieWire, the director said he’s soured on the technologies and won’t return to them anytime soon, specifically 3D.

Emmy Russell has vivid memories of her childhood, riding in the tour bus alongside her grandmother — or Meemaw as Russell calls her — Loretta Lynn. She’d sometimes join her onstage or they’d sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” together.
It took years, though, for Russell — who lives in Nashville and recently auditioned for American Idol — to finally embrace the “gift” Lynn always said she had.
“All the time, she’d be like ‘When are you going to come back and do what you’re made to do?'” she tells Rolling Stone.

Emmy Russell, granddaughter of the late country pioneer Loretta Lynn, wowed the American Idol judges during Sunday’s episode and began to make her own mark on the music industry.
Leading up to her performance, Russell revealed she’s a descendant of the bonafide legend and proceeded to give a tour of her Meemaw’s house. “She’s one of the biggest country music singers of all time, but to me, she’s just Grandma,” the 24-year-old musician said. “I think I am a little timid, and I think it is because I want to own my voice… That’s why I want to challenge myself and come out here.”
From there, Russell stepped behind the piano to deliver an emotional performance of her original song “Skinny,” which was written about eating disorders. “Sleeping on scales is just what I’m used to,” she sings on the track. “I haven’t eaten in days.

Born and raised in Kentucky as the daughter of coal miner Ted Webb, Loretta Lynn taught herself how to play guitar as a teenager. She knew enough to begin carving out her identity as a singer, later giving way to the establishment of a powerful legacy. But taking a look at Loretta’s sprawling family tree, it seems as though her musical calling was inevitable — and it has spanned generations since.

Existentialism in a bottle is how I see Alice and Jack, and it might just become one of the most misunderstood series of this year. The titular characters go through a rollercoaster of emotions, mostly heartbreaks. The meaning of life. We’re all looking for it in one way or another. It’s not easy for anyone, but in particular, it’s not easy for Alice and Jack in this poignant slow-burn. Nothing much happens in this series except a flickering romance between two people over a period of 16 years. One might say that it’s a story about life and the emotions that Alice and Jack have for each other in an existence without meaning. The narrative unfolds mostly through Jack’s perspective as he explores the workings of life, depicted as a series of coincidental meetings with Alice. Maybe a bit too tragic, but where’s the lie?...

No surprises there: Sex and crime still work when it comes to attracting viewers. But even when playing with familiar tropes, it’s crucial to add complexity to stories and characters, Fremantle’s Jamie Lynn argued on a roof table at the Berlinale Series Market.
“Easy is not always best. You still need to back great writers and great ideas,” he said during a panel discussion “Cold Cases & Hot Flashes – The Rise of Crime and Relationship Dramas in Challenging Times,” organized by the Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi).
“I have kids and before this, I said: ‘You have to put cheese on the vegetables in order to get them down.’ We have to make the shows that are approachable, but all this complexity and great, rich character work, that’s what people want. We just need to get them in quicker.”

Vanessa Redgrave is the Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning actress who has starred in dozens of films over several decades, but how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1937, Redgrave was almost destined to become a performer: her parents were Sir Michael Redgrave and Lady Redgrave (Rachel Kempson), her siblings were Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave, her daughters are Joely Richardson and the late Natasha Richardson, and her son-in-law is Liam Neeson. So when it comes to the Redgraves, acting definitely runs in the family.
Redgrave earned her first Oscar nomination in 1966: Best Actress for “Morgan! A Suitable Case for Treatment.” She won 11 years later as Best Supporting Actress for “Julia” (1977) and competed four more times.
Unfortunately, her Oscar victory is best remembered for her controversial acceptance speech than for the performance itself:...

For today's Oscar volley, Lynn Lee and Glenn Dunks discuss the Best Actor race.
Lynn: Glenn, it’s been a while since I’ve felt this strongly about the Best Actor race, so I’ll just lay my cards on the table: I really, really want both Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) to be nominated, would love Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) to join them --though I think he’s a long shot-- and really Don’T want Leonardo DiCaprio to get in for Killers of the Flower Moon.
It’s extra personal for me because I saw American Fiction, All of Us Strangers, and The Holdovers back to back at the Middleburg Film Festival earlier this year and loved all of them. More to the point, while all three films have their flaws, each one worked like gangbusters largely because of the fantastic...

For today's Oscar Volley, Lynn and Elisa discuss the Oscar race for Adapted Screenplay.
Lynn Lee: Let’s start with the elephant giant doll not in the room: Barbie is out! Assuming, that is, the Academy agrees it’s properly competing for Original rather than Adapted Screenplay. Personally, I think Barbie does belong in Original even if it is technically based on an existing “property.” And whatever the calculus behind the decision to compete in that category, I’m not convinced it has an easier path to victory than if it had opted for Adapted. Be that as it may, its absence means that in stark contrast to last year, this year’s Adapted Screenplay slate may be composed entirely of adaptations of books, glorious books!

The eighth episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves showed us the final confrontation between Esau Pierce and Bass Reeves, and I will add that it was a hell of a showdown. The series tried to capture what Bass had gone through over the years and how he had been impacted by his circumstances, which changed him drastically. Jennie could no longer recognize what Bass had become, and Bass needed to deal with Esau to be able to understand that himself. Before Bass had become a Deputy U.S. Marshall or a free man for that matter, he was a slave, but destiny had something else planned for him. He went through some harrowing situations but ultimately became a free man and started his family. Now that the miniseries has come to an end, it’s clear that dealing with Esau Pierce was the most challenging task of Bass’ life, which is...

The fifth episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves didn’t jump years ahead to show us Bass as an aging fellow. This was expected as each episode had been fast-forwarding to a new period in Bass’ life, but the fifth episode picks up from where the previous episode had ended. Bass was given the duty of getting his prisoners to Fort Worth for their trial, and he successfully managed to do so. The episode focused on Bass missing out on family life due to his job and his kids not getting to spend enough time with their father. Jennie was worried that Bass might be getting too obsessed with the job. Bass knew it but couldn’t overlook the responsibility. The stressed Bass learned something at the end of the episode that just might make him break his ethical code for the first time.
