- One of Adolf Hitler's earliest supporters. He took part in the infamous beer Hall "putsch" in Munich in 1923.

- When the war ended on 5/8/1945, Terhoven was ordered by his superiors to surrender to the Allies. Aware of the punishment that obviously awaited him for his actions during the occupation of Norway, he committed suicide by entering a bunker filled with 50 pounds of dynamite and blowing himself up.

- Appointed Reichskommissar of occupied Norway in 1940, notorious for his brutality towards real and imagined enemies. He ordered the massacre of several hundred Yugoslav and Norwegian POWs at the Falstad concentration camp In 1942. In retribution for the killing of a guard at another camp, he ordered the murders of more than 400 prisoners. During his administration hundreds more prisoners and ordinary Norwegian citizens were murdered in reprisal for various resistance activities.
