Iga Swiatek has been on the top of the tennis world for a while now, and she just bagged her second Polish Sportsperson of the Year award.
Poland might not be the first country you think of when you mention sports, but the country has some big names across the various sports. Robert Lewandowski has long been the poster boy for Polish sports, and for good reason; however, more recently, it's become associated with Iga Swiatek.
The legendary football player was in attendance when Swiatek won her second Roland Garros, and in the meantime, she added a 3rd one for a total tally of 4 Grand Slams at the age of 22, with the number likely to increase.
She's also the reigning world number one and has been for quite a while, as she only briefly lost it after last year's US Open. All of that was enough for the country to...

The 2024 United Cup final tie couldn't be any better, as Alexander Zverev forced the deciding mixed doubles after beating Hubert Hurkacz.
The last thing tennis fans want to see when coming to see a final match, or a final tie in this case, is a dominant victory and quick ending to what should have been a memorable night for the money that they spent on the tickets.
For a moment, it looked like that's what may happen in Sydney during the 2024 United Cup final, after Iga Swiatek bested Angelique Kerber, and she did so in a dominant style, winning 6-3, 6-0.
That meant her compatriot Hurkacz had the title on his racket, had he defeated Germany's Zverev, who was coming into the match after saving match points in mixed doubles the day before, in a match that finished way past 2 am local time.

The first Grand Slam tournament of the 2024 season is on the horizon, and the entry list for the women's edition of the Australian Open has been released.
Running from January 14th to 28th, next year's Australian Open will have a historic Sunday start. One hundred twenty-eight women will compete in the biggest party of Australian summer, but only one player will be lucky enough to emerge from the fortnight with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
The Australian Open is played on outdoor hard courts at its famed home - Melbourne Park. It's been ten years since there was a successful title defense in the women's tournament, so is that trend likely to continue, or will Belarus Aryna Sabalenka defend the crown she won 12 months ago?

Iga Swiatek proved her greatness at the 2024 United Cup, beating former Wta's world no. 1, Angelique Kerber in her last singles match at the tournament.
Coming into the final tie against Germany, the Polish no. 1 was yet to lose a match in 2024, and Kerber, who had just won her first match as a mother, wanted to test the qualities of the current world no. 1.
It was a crucial match for both, as the following men's singles match between Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Zverev can be won by anyone, so this victory could have proved to crucial for both countries.
Early in the match, it seemed like a very close battle. Kerber had two break points in the fifth game, but after she didn't use those, the Pole had the same amount of break points in the following game, but she also did not use those.

Alexander Zverev teamed up with veteran Laura Siegemund and delivered a stunning performance to clinch the 2024 United Cup final for Germany.
Some people might consider doubles boring, but if they ever tell you that, send them the highlights of this match. It was a spectacular match that had everything. There was drama, there were spectacular moments, and some great tennis.
Both teams did their best because it was a crucial match. The winner takes all, and Germany took it all. They're in the final and will play against Poland, which should be a spectacular final.
If we get anything like this tie, then we should be happy. It began with Angelique Kerber beating Ajla Tomljanovic earlier today, which was a minor surprise. Then we saw Alex de Minaur turning around the match against Alexander Zverev, and that was quite a surprise because Zverev was the most valuable player for his country so far.

The 2024 Adelaide International, is the last Wta 500 tournament before the first major of the season, and it will run from January 8th to 13th, as we already know the draw.
Before the first Grand Slam of the season - the Australian Open, women are treated to two Wta 500 tournaments, which give them a chance to accumulate a total of 1000 points, which is almost as much as the runner-up finish is worth in Melbourne.
The runner-up finish is something that Elena Rybakina achieved at the Australian Open in 2023, and that's also maybe one of the reasons, why she's one of the few players that elected to take part in both of these Wta 500 tournaments, to make up for points that she may loss in the Melbourne Park.

After hours of battling, Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber sealed the win for Germany against Italy at the 2024 United Cup.

Alexander Zverev faced some issues in his first match of the 2024 season, but ultimately, he did enough to win the match.
It was a pretty big match for Zverev, who, besides wanting to start the year with a win, needed to win the match to keep Germany alive against Italy in the United Cup. The first match of this tie was played earlier today, and Jasmine Paolini defeated Angelique Kerber, which made this match matter further.
Even without that, Zverev would have liked to kick off his season with a win because after all, you get points for this event. The opponent was Lorenzo Sonego, a really tricky player who can be very unpredictable.
You never know what's going to happen when you play against him, but Zverev quickly found out that the good Sonego showed up. The first set was incredibly close, even though both players pushed for a break.

Naomi Osaka's return is upon us, and former Wta player Barbara Schett previewed what we might see from the former number one.
The return of Naomi Osaka is probably the most exciting storyline in tennis. It's been a long time since we saw her play, and her ability with the racket makes it so exciting.
We don't know what's going to happen, but very few players were ever as dominant as Osaka was Down Under over the years. Former player Barbara Schett spoke to Eurosport about what we might expect from Osaka on her comeback.
She thinks it will likely go better than that of Caroline Wozniacki and Angelique Kerber because she's younger and generally has more of an aggressive game.
Caroline Wozniacki and Angie Kerber, they're a little bit more defensive. They do like to play with the pace of the opponent, but they don't have those killer shots like Naomi Osaka.

For many players, the 2024 tennis season is a chance for redemption, but for others, it is a season of comebacks.
One player returning to the circuit after spending the past 18 months on maternity leave is Angelique Kerber. The German lefty turns 36 next month but has committed to playing next season. She'll join the conveyor belt of mothers who have excelled in the second phase of their careers.

Angelique Kerber has had a good amount of practice and is ready to return to the courts after a very long time.
The absence of Kerber from tennis didn't happen because of an injury but a pregnancy, which is probably the happiest reason to miss tennis. She loves the sport and always maintained that she'll come back to it after her pregnancy, and it's happening.
She worked hard in the previous weeks and months to get to a decent level; now, it's about testing herself on the tennis court. She has a packed schedule, both Down Under and after and can't really wait to get it started.
I feel ready, the training has gone according to plan so far, and the anticipation for the start of the season in Australia is increasing. Since it’s been almost a year and a half since my last match, I can’t estimate where I currently stand.

Emma Raducanu might not need to go through the rigors of qualifying to play in the main draw of the 2024 Australian Open.
However, there is a caveat on how she'll enter next year's first Grand Slam tournament. Because Raducanu's rank dropped to a low of No. 296 upon release of the entry list, she needed either a main draw wild card or use her Special Ranking to avoid playing qualifying rounds.
Suffice to say neither of those two possibilities worked for her. A wild card has not been forthcoming, and at this moment, Raducanu's Sr of World No. 103 is inadequate to garner her a main draw spot. It would have been sufficient on any other previous edition, but not next year.
It's not all doom and gloom for Raducanu, who is set to return at the Asb Classic in Auckland in January, as she'll now need four more withdrawals to qualify...

The 2024 Adelaide International is the last Wta 500 tournament before the first major of the season, held from January 8th to 13th, 2024.
As the last so-called "warm-up tournament," the entry list for Adelaide International includes all the top names, with the initial cut-off being already 28th place in the Wta Rankings.
Last year, there were two tournaments held at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre in Adelaide, Australia. Aryna Sabalenka won the first one, and Belinda Bencic triumphed in the second tournament, but neither of them will come in 2024.
On the other hand, it will be Elena Rybakina, who later lost to Sabalenka in the Australian Open final, who will be the leading player at the tournament, and speaking ahead of the event on the tournament's official website, the Kazakhstani player was happy to lead the entry list.

The Aces Award was incepted in 1995 in memory of former Wta CEO Jerry Diamond and has been won by the likes of Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, and, most recently, Maria Sakkari. World No. 5 Pegula has now etched her name on that list.

Dubbed the "Happy Slam," there is a good reason to flash a smile as we inch closer to the 2024 Australian Open, which will have a historic Sunday start next season.
Several big names will mark their return to competition either from injury or a leave of absence in the opening week of January, playing a warm-up tournament in preparation for the year's first Grand Slam.
On that note, let us list the four former champions braced to make a comeback in Australia’s biggest sporting bonanza next year, and unsurprisingly, these players might still possess the knack to go all the way again.
Rafael Nadal
Undoubtedly, the biggest name on the list is 22-time major champion Rafael Nadal. The Spanish lefty hadn’t played since the corresponding tournament in 2023 when he sadly succumbed to a career-threatening hip injury that proved a lot more serious than on first look.

Angelique Kerber has really high ambitions about her comeback, wanting to earn a spot at the Paris Olympics to represent Germany alongside Alexander Zverev.
Kerber has been out of tennis for over a year as she was pregnant. Now, she will return in about a month in Australia, having pretty high ambitions about her comeback.
We'll have to wait and see what happens, but after seeing some of the other mothers compete, there is no reason to doubt Kerber's ability to return to the top.
One of those events she has her eyes on is the Paris Olympics. Playing for Germany has always been a pretty big honor for her, and she has plenty of experience doing that.
She's played with Zverev before, so taking the stage in mixed doubles with him is certainly something she's thinking about.
Very much! When we meet in Australia, we will definitely talk about it.

Angelique Kerber is returning to tennis in 2024 and the German will make an appearance at the Hamburg Open, not far from where she grew up.
Kerber was a tremendous tennis player at her peak, and while her peak is long gone, she hopes to demonstrate that she's still capable upon her return. She hasn't played for over a year due to her pregnancy but is hopeful to emulate what her compatriot Tatjana Maria did as a mother.
We've seen a couple of tennis players do some great things as mothers, including Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina who both had successful returns to the sport. The comeback will happen soon in Australia, and we'll see how things go.
There is a lot of buzz about her coming back because early reports indicate she's been looking very good in practice. One of the events she'll play on her comeback is the Hambrug...

Iga Swiatek finished the year as world number one, which allowed her to get this newest milestone - 80 weeks as the number one player in the world.
Finishing the year as world number one is in ways a cheat code because you get to coast through that part of the calendar. There are no events, and there is no chance of losing your rank while you rack up the weeks as number one. That's what's happening right now to Swiatek as she begins her 80th week as world number one on the Wta Tour.
To put that into perspective, it's quite a bit. She solidified herself as the 10th longest-tenured number one in the history of women's tennis and is getting closer to Lindsay Davenport, number 9 on that list with 98 weeks. She's already ahead of the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, and many other great players.

The 2024 Australian Open is shaping up to be a 'comeback' Grand Slam as multiple players will enter it with the Special Ranking.
Special Ranking gives players who missed a lot of time, allowing them to enter events they generally wouldn't be able to. The entry lists are formulated by the rankings; however, these players don't have the required rankings which is why they need this special ranking.
It has limited use for a certain number of tournaments, so players can't use it all the time. Rather, they use it for a select few events, which most players spend on the majors. The hope is to earn enough points to improve the ranking so they can enter future events without any problems.
The 2024 Australian Open will have 7 of those in the women's event, as seven players will kind of make a comeback at the event. Naomi Osaka is obviously the biggest name,...

Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open at age 19, and for former US Open champion Angelique Kerber , it came as a bit of a surprise.
Gauff has obviously been a very talented player for a few years now , so nothing she really does is a huge surprise to anybody. It's what most people expect out of her. The only real mystery was when and not if it was going to happen.
For Gauff, things finally clicked at this year's US Open. She's been playing amazing tennis in the lead-up to the event, slowly growing her confidence, which skyrocketed in New York during that run.
She made it to the final and then turned around a tricky situation against world number one to be, Aryna Sabalenka. It's a very impressive feat and it started the young American's ascend on the Wta Tour.

Marketa Vondrousova will contest the Wimbledon final after beating Elina Svitolina on Thursday, and she's the second lowest-ranked Wimbledon finalist ever after Serena Williams.
Vondrousova has had a surprising run at Wimbledon, but she's had some amazing results in her career in the past. She contested the French Open final a few years ago and will now contest her second Grand Slam final. In the meantime, the Czech player also added a silver Olympic medal in 2021, so it's clear that she's one of the most dangerous players on the Wta Tour.
Health has been a huge question mark for her and it still is. She withdrew from her doubles match after beating Jessica Pegula, citing an ankle problem. That ankle problem didn't prove troublesome in her match against Svitolina though she did play with a lot of aggression, shortening the points as much as possible. Perhaps that's an indication that she's not fully healthy.

London, July 11 (Ians) Marketa Vondrousova came back from a breakdown in the third set to upset No.4 Jessica Pegula and reach the semifinals of the Wimbledon, here on Tuesday.
Vondrousova won the last five games to defeat No.4 seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a rousing match on Court No.1. Vondrousova entered the tournament with only four career main-draw wins on grass. Now, in less than a fortnight, she’s scored a handful.
The 24-year-old from the Czech Republic will play the second major semifinal of her career on Thursday against No.1 Iga Swiatek or unseeded Elina Svitolina who were still playing on Centre Court.
This was the fourth consecutive match in which Vondrousova defeated a seeded player. Previously, she was a winner over No.12 Veronika Kudermetova, No.20 Donna Vekic and No.32 Marie Bouzkova. She’s only the third woman in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon semifinals after defeating four seeded opponents,...

Eastbourne, June 30 (Ians) Former champion Madison Keys defeated No.5 seed Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-3 in an all-American semifinal to return to the Rothesay International final after a nine-year gap, here on Friday.
Keys’ upset of Gauff is her first grass-court win over a Top 10 player since she beat Angelique Kerber to win the 2014 Rothesay International final. Overall, it was the 24th Top 10 victory of her career.
The 28-year-old found the breakthrough at 2-2 in the opening set, after attacking a short serve from Gauff and eventually taking the first set.
Looking to shift the momentum in her favour, the 19-year-old Gauff grasped an early break in the second set before Keys fought back to level the scoreboard.
After finding another late break on her compatriot’s serve, Keys felt the pressure when tasked to serve for the match but eventually secured the victory on her fourth match point to book her spot in the final.

The 2023 Bad Homburg Open, which is a Wta 250 event, is one of the few tournaments held in Germany and the entry list reflects that.
From June 25th to July 1st, players will meet at the tournament that doesn't really have a long history on the Wta Tour. The Bad Homburg Open was first held in 2021, with Angelique Kerber winning the tournament, and one year later, Caroline Garcia triumphed in the German city.
Neither of the previous two champions will compete in 2023 as the German player has been away from the Wta Tour for quite some time as she recently gave birth to her first child and the defending champion from France simply elected not to play the tournament.
But one player has made the decision to compete in Bad Homburg and it certainly made all fans in the city happy. Iga Swiatek will make her appearance at the tournament, as...
