A new Tyler Perry legal thriller, "Mea Culpa," has quickly climbed up the Netflix global Top 10 charts despite being poorly received by critics. There's an absurdist streak in the story where almost nothing makes much sense, leaning hard into exaggerated and predictable plot progressions that feel unrealistic from start to finish. Perhaps this willful absurdity contributes to the guilty pleasure of it all, shooting "Mea Culpa" to the top of the streaming charts, where it's sitting at number one as of this writing.
Part sleazy erotic thriller, part relationship drama, "Mea Culpa" centers on criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), who needs to take on a case involving artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes) and his deceased girlfriend Hydie (María Gabriela González). Although there are reasons to believe that Zyair is guilty of murdering Hydie, Mea's increasing attraction to her client further complicates matters, despite her dedication to uncovering the truth.

The Tyler Perry cinematic universe is expanding. The latest from the prolific producer, writer, and director is Mea Culpa, a new steamy thriller starring Kelly Rowland (The Curse of Bridge Hollow), who is also a producer on the film.
Also starring Trevante Rhodes, Sean Sagar (The Gentlemen), Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch), and RonReaco Lee (Nappily Ever After), the film centers around a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend. But when burning desire takes hold, things get hot… and dangerous. “This idea came to me because I love all of those older thrillers from the ’80s and ’90s,” Perry tells Tudum. “It was fun to explore the best and worst of humanity through the genre of an exotic thriller.”

Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes do some heavy lifting in an often hilariously messy attempt to recall classics like Jagged Edge and Basic Instinct
There are small pockets of low-rent fun to be had in Tyler Perry’s lurid erotic thriller Mea Culpa, some intentional, most less so. It’s a film that, yes, is about a woman called Mea who is also, yes, at fault, as women often are in the writer-director’s films. The mogul has gained a reputation for punishing his female characters, especially when they dare to stop believing in their husband, no matter how awful his behaviour might be, like in his atrocious 2018 thriller Acrimony, where he had the gall to waste, and chastise, Taraji P Henson.
His latest target is a powerful lawyer played by Kelly Rowland, making a convincing case as leading lady, trapped in a marriage with a letdown, a man fired...

Mea Culpa is a great title because the story revolves around Mea Harper, a defense attorney whose life changes after she decides to represent the artist Zyair Malloy. Director Tyler Perry is no stranger to this kind of filmmaking. He wears the writer’s hat on this one as he cooks up another one of those steamy thriller plots that culminate in a violent finale. Perry, who is an actor too, is not known for his nuanced writing. His films have been criticized for not looking cinematic enough and being on the wavelength of a soap opera rather than a movie. Mea Culpa is clearly suffering from the fact that it cannot surpass movies like Basic Instinct, or 9½ Weeks, which is what it felt like it was riffing off of, and when that happens, one starts to wonder if it had anything new to say or if it was...

Loosely translated, “Mea culpa” is Latin for “it’s my fault.” It’s something of a cheeky title for Tyler Perry’s Netflix Erotic Thriller Mea Culpa, considering that lead character Mea (Kelly Rowland) can hardly be blamed for the events that transpire.
Like most Erotic Thrillers, Mea Culpa traffics in temptation, desire, and secrets. The two hour film opens with a deluge of expository back story, immediately throwing the audience into the sordid family life of Mea Harper, a wealthy and successful criminal defense lawyer based out of Chicago.
The first few scenes confirm that Mea is having marital difficulties with her husband Kal Hawthorne (Sean Sagar). He’s been unemployed for eight months after being fired for his drug addiction, and they’re in couples counselling because Mea suspects he cheated with his friend Jenna (Arianna Barron).
Mea is also extremely jealous of Kal’s relationship with his mother,...

Kelly Rowland isn’t ready to spill the beans about what happened behind the scenes of the Today show earlier this month.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, the actress and singer was interviewed on the morning show about her new movie, Mea Culpa, which premiered Friday, February 23, on Netflix.
Despite being scheduled to return to the show later in the morning alongside Hoda Kotb, she was Mia, and Rita Ora was drafted in at the last minute to replace her.
At the time, there were conflicting reports about whether Rowland walked off the show over the size of a dressing room or Savannah Guthrie’s questions about Beyonce.
In a new interview promoting Mea Culpa on WGN News in Chicago, anchor Dean Richards noted the countless articles on the internet, with various takes on what went down.
The former Destiny’s Child star shut him down when asked to clear up what happened.

“Mea Culpa” is a movie writen and directed by Tyler Perry. It stars Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes.
Tyler Perry is a talented actor, writer, and director. He showcases his skills in two of these roles (directing and writing) to bring us this classic thriller that relies heavily on its script and performances, offering a perfect Hitchcock-style intrigue.
It’s a well-rounded film, one of many we have seen, with good acting, solid dialogue, and impeccable direction that stays true to the genre’s guidelines.
Is it surprising? Not at all.
Plot
A lawyer with marital problems decides to defend a famous painter accused of murder. Things get complicated due to her husband’s family and a clear conflict of interest in the case. She begins to get close to her client, a famous and charming man, and the case starts to affect her personally.

‘Mea Culpa’ Review: Tyler Perry’s 1980s-Style Erotic Thriller Serves Up Guilty Pleasures to His Fans
Within his deal at Netflix, Tyler Perry has found room to flex his narrative muscles, mixing his familiar brand of comedy and melodrama with other genres. “A Jazzman’s Blues” applied Perry’s usual formula to a 1930s period setting. Before that, his first film for the streamer, “A Fall from Grace,” found him trying his hand at a legal thriller. Now, with “Mea Culpa,” the prolific writer-director pushes that genre further, making a loopy 1980s-style erotic thriller with a distinctly Tyler Perry flair. The plot skews close to “Jagged Edge” with a lawyer falling for her client, a man accused of murdering his partner, while referencing another famous ’80s staple, “Fatal Attraction,” via a love nest accessed only by freight elevator.
The lawyer in this scenario is Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), and her possibly guilty client is artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), who’s accused of murdering his girlfriend.

Kelly Rowland stars as a defense lawyer whose relationship with a client goes from professional to personal in Netflix’s Mea Culpa from writer/director Tyler Perry. The two-minute trailer shows Rowland taking on a murder case and learning too late that a snake is never violent while it’s stalking its prey.
The film also stars Trevante Rhodes, Nick Sagar, Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton.
“When criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Rowland) takes on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Rhodes), the truth isn’t as obvious as it seems,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “While she tries to determine the innocence or guilt of her cagy-yet-seductive client, it is uncovered that everyone is guilty of something. Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa explores what happens when burning desire takes hold and things get hot… and dangerous.”

"Please - this is my life and they're trying to ruin me." Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for Tyler Perry's next film titled Mea Culpa, about a defense attorney's steamy affair. Set for streaming on Netflix starting in February, where Perry still has a deal and has been releasing most of recent films - including A Jazzman's Blues before this one. A criminal defense attorney takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, but when burning desire takes hold things get hot... and dangerous. Starring Kelly Rowland as Mea Harper, with Trevante Rhodes, Nick Sagar, Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton. The tagline should just be "everyone is guilty of something", which is a strange way to deal with injustice but hey maybe it makes for some steady movies. So many good lines in here: "a snake is never violent when stalking their prey.

We often talk about some filmmakers who are their own subgenres. Wes Anderson, for example, doesn’t make comedies or dramas. He makes Wes Anderson films. Honestly, there is no better example of this than Tyler Perry. However, the thing that separates Perry from his filmmaking brethren is the fact that he basically works completely outside of the studio system, and he just makes whatever the hell he wants. Like right now, he’s prepping the release of an erotic thriller, “Mea Culpa.” And it’s definitely a Tyler Perry movie.

Amazon MGM‘s Play Dirty is ready to announce its female lead for director Shane Black’s upcoming film. Joining Mark Wahlberg for Black’s crime thriller is Rosa Salazar. Lakeith Stanfield also stars, with a script written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Play Dirty focuses on the “professional thief Parker (Wahlberg), who, after being double-crossed and left for dead, sees his hunt for revenge bring with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But even with the help of his partner, actor-slash-con artist Grofield (Stanfield), he’ll still need to outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man if he hopes to stay alive.”
Rosa Salazar’s Play Dirty role remains a mystery. However, the film is inspired by Donald E Westlake’s Parker crime novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.

Candy Cane Lane, Prime Video’s latest Christmas movie with a zany twist, comes just the day after Netflix’s Family Switch, which also happens to be a Christmas comedy with a zany twist. That’s quite alright, though, given that it’s that time of year when we are bound to get a lot of these kinds of movies, all aiming to bring us holiday cheer. With Eddie Murphy heading Candy Cane Lane, the movie is destined to receive more attention than its peers. Although Murphy’s last two releases, the romantic comedy titled You People that came earlier this year and Coming 2 America (2021), a sequel to Murphy’s own hit Coming to America (1988), were pretty much duds, we all know what Murphy can do. The 2019 biographical comedy Dolomite is My Name is a shining example of that. Naturally, Candy Cane Lane, despite being another Christmas movie, comes with a lot of expectations.

The star, along with Tracee Ellis Ross playing his wife, does his best but Amazon’s increasingly convoluted family film wears thin
We’re in the process of getting snowed in by flimsy festive fodder, most of which is indistinguishable – cheaply made, poorly written, floating on the assumed Christmas spirit of those watching – but there are moments when it’s easy to get naively hopeful. Seeing the involvement of Eddie Murphy in Amazon’s Candy Cane Lane is one such moment, the actor not only a key reason why Trading Places remains a December staple but a star who brightens whatever film he’s in, regardless of the season. It might have been a while since he’s been at his shiniest (2019’s Dolemite Is My Name being a fine example of what he can and will do) but at a time when star power as a whole is depressingly diminished,...

The following contains major spoilers for both Bird Box: Barcelona and Bird Box.
Much to some viewers delight (and others’ annoyance), Netflix’s buzzy horror saga, which has grown out of a 2018 zeitgeist-y hit into a bonafide franchise via this weekend’s Bird Box: Barcelona, continues to take its cues from The Blair Witch Project. That is to say, they never show us the damn monster! Or in Bird Box’s case, monsters or creatures, plural.
This is of course thematically sound. The characters of both Bird Box (directed by Susanne Bier) and Bird Box: Barcelona (from writer-directors David Pastor and Alex Pastor) cannot gaze upon the creatures terrorizing them without being driven to suicide. So why would the movie show us? Netflix can’t have 45 million dead viewers on its hands after all!
But just because we never see the creatures, doesn’t mean we don’t learn anything about them.

If anyone embodies Drake’s song “Started From the Bottom,” Shamier Anderson, a fellow Canadian, does. “I’ve been grinding for a minute from Toronto,” says the actor, who grew up in Scarborough, a marginalized district with three brothers and their single mom, a Jamaican immigrant. “My mother didn’t accept the labels that we had very little hope, very little promise. She used to tell us, ‘Even though they label you as an at-risk community, we’re at risk to be extraordinary.’ “

He continued, “They made it a point to make sure that everyone feels as equally important. We were all there for one common reason and common goal and it was to bring something special up to the big screen.”
Backstage, Quan told reporters that after doing the Goonies and Indiana Jones as a child actor, he felt good to be making movies, and then it went “very quickly downhill from there.”

Will Smith was the surprise guest that set the room abuzz Wednesday night at the 14th annual African American Film Critics Assn. Awards at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.
But Smith had tough competition in the emotional-speech department from fellow honorees that included Danielle Deadwyler, Viola Davis, Angela Bassett and Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Deadwyler, who won lead actress honors for her tour de force role in “Till,” drew the crowd’s the attention to the world-changing impact of Mamie Till-Mobley, whose provocative decision to show pictures of her son’s brutalized corpse helped ignite the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and ’60s.
Like other speakers, Deadwyler drew a direct comparison to the conditions that existed more than a half-century ago to the present day, when politicians are pursuing racist legislation designed to restrict the teaching of American history in schools as it relates to the Black experience over the past 400 years.
