The year is 2008 and 16-year-old Shawn Johnson has just won the USA Gymnastics Olympic Trials, stamping her ticket to the Beijing Olympics. "How does it feel to be Shawn Johnson right now?" a reporter asks her.
"It's amazing," Johnson says, beaming. "I feel like the happiest girl in the world."
Hundreds of miles away, in a fictional universe, two 8-year-old gymnasts start to dream.
The Happiest Girl in the World (out April 20) is fiction, but you know what it's based on, even if you only watch gymnastics every four years: the sexual abuse case of Larry Nassar, a doctor who abused hundreds of girls (the vast majority of them gymnasts) under the guise of treatment. The case also implicated leaders at his longtime employer, USA Gymnastics (Usag), including national team coaches Marta and Bela Karolyi and Usag president Steve Penny. The case prompted a stunning lawsuit in which over 150 survivors gave wrenching victim impact statements,...

Olympians Jordyn Wieber & Nastia Liukin Open Up About Pressure to Stay Thin After Gymnastics Careers
Retired Oylmpic gymnasts Jordyn Wieber and Nastia Liukin are opening up about the body image pressure they experienced after leaving the competitive sport.
The gold medalists recently sat down for an interview with PopSugar, in which they talked about life after gymnastics — including the pressure they’ve experienced to maintain thin figures.
“I think because we’re both retired, not being a competitive gymnast, people do remember us as gymnasts,” Liukin, 27, said. “So, there still is that expectation to be in shape. To look like that 16-year-old gymnast that we did like 10, 12 years ago. We’re like, ‘okay, we’re not that person anymore.

Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson had a little help from her former teammates on Monday's (Nov. 26) on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" performance show.
Thanks to the 2012 Summer Olympics' famous Fierce 5 -- Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber -- Shawn and her partner, Derek Hough, earned a perfect score for their freestyle routine ... and now all the girls want a shot at competing for the mirror-ball trophy themselves.
"I definitely would," McKayla enthused when asked whether she'd like to follow in Shawn's dancing footsteps. "I know all the girls here from the Fierce 5 think it would be so much fun and just an amazing experience."
And Gabby agrees. "Definitely! I love the dynamic of being paired with a partner, just having so much behind the scenes, backstage, and just going out there performing for the fans and the crowd. Why not?"
They certainly have Shawn's blessing.

Shawn Johnson and her pro partner, Derek Hough, made history tonight (Nov. 26) on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars."
The couple wowed in their perfect-scoring "supersize freestyle," a medley tribute to all their routines this season. But it was their special guests -- the U.S. Olympic gymnastic team's Fierce 5 -- who made their performance especially unforgettable.
"It meant everything to me to have them here," Shawn told us backstage about Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber joining her in the ballroom.

"After they already went [to the London Olympics] and were successful and became the Fierce Five, they took time to come out and support me. Seeing as how I didn't get the comeback I wanted, this is bigger than I could ever have imagined."

Starting tomorrow, you can catch up on the entirety of Suits either at USA's website or via OnDemand. I guess I should try to figure out where this business with the can opener began.
Turner Classic Movies will soon have a showcase for some of Johnny Carson's classic celebrity interviews.
TV Guide asks if The X-Factor's mentors are hurting competitors more than they're helping. Inappropriate costumes, bad song choices and unenthusiastic advice are listed as ways the mentors have turned into an obstacle contestants need to overcome.
Brian Dennehy will appear in the final season of The Big C as Cathy's father. Considering how Cathy has had cancer for three seasons and we're only now meeting him, I expect he'll be as awful as the rest of the Jamison clan has turned out to be.

It's like something out of a George Orwell novel: Shane and Danielle, using their romance designed specifically for a television show that is considered 'reality', have escaped Big Brother and met with a mysterious faction known as "The Fierce Five". Tonight's Big Brother is a taped eviction special. The eviction and the subsequent Hoh competition actually took place yesterday. Something else happened on this Big Brother episode that is significant, particularly for fans of the Shanielle showmance. Shane won a luxury night outside of the Big Brother house and was able to bring one other houseguest with him. Naturally he brought Dan. ielle, that is. They had no idea where they were going when they left, but keep in mind these guys have been sequestered in the house...

Maryland Del. Emmett Burns, Jr. has backed off his demand that Brendon Ayanbadejo be forced to be silent on the subject of marriage equality, and his reasoning sounds awfully familiar. "Upon reflection, he has his First Amendment rights. And I have my First Amendment rights. … Each of us has the right to speak our opinions. The football player and I have a right to speak our minds." For the record, Ellen DeGeneres has offered to fly Ayanbadejo to California to tape her show this week.

As if earning a gold medal and appearing on every talk-show and magazine in existence weren’t enough, Gabby Douglas has stepped up her nonstop media tour this week. She was with McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross in Los Angeles on Tuesday for a pre-vma press conference, where Gabby got to announce Lil Wayne’s performance. Then she hopped on a plane to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber helped promote the Kids’ Health Goes Gold initiative by day and then she led the pledge of allegiance at the Democratic National Convention in the evening. We assume she’s en route back to L.A. for tonight’s VMAs. That in itself seems like enough on the plate of a 16-year-old, but today comes news of one more project in the works: She’s publishing a memoir.

Fame, fortune, and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. What more could a celebrity possibly want? An Olympic medal, apparently. While the London Olympics have sadly come to a close, the Olympians are busy making public appearances - and plenty of them. And the celebrities they encounter along the way can't help but wonder what it would be like to have an Olympic medal, even for a second.

The Olympics shockers keep rolling in. Following Michael Phelps' fourth-place swim Saturday, Jordyn Wieber, the reigning world all-around gymnastics champion, didn't make the cut when it came down to this year's Olympic games. The 17-year-old powerhouse gymnast was spotted sobbing after she failed to qualify for the women's all-around finals during the gymnastics women's qualification Sunday. Only two girls from the Us team could qualify for the Olympic all-around final. After Weiber's scores fell behind those of her teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas during the competition, that meant she was out. "It is a bit of a disappointment, " Wieber said in a statement...
