There will be no second season for CBS’ True Lies. The network has canceled the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie after one season. The news comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 17.
The decision is not surprising. True Lies has not been able to find an audience, ranking as CBS’ lowest-rated scripted series of the season. Its ratings remained relatively steady, indicating a loyal core audience, but they stayed low.

If you love James Cameron’s 1994 smash True Lies — the effort to out-Bond the James Bond movies of that period remains evident in every tremendous action set-piece — it’s probably better not to think of CBS’ True Lies as having anything to do with it.
If you hate James Cameron’s 1994 smash True Lies — it’s creepy, misogynistic, xenophobic and the pacing dies for an hour in the middle — it’s probably better not to think of CBS’ True Lies as having anything to do with it.
As a movie, True Lies was a mushroom cloud, every explosion and stunt pushed to a mid-’90s extreme.
As a TV show, CBS’ True Lies is a bottle rocket. The accurate minimization of the series isn’t exactly “cheap,” but it’s definitely “incongruously small.” True Lies is a fizzy throwback that’s closer to something like a Hart to Hart or...

CBS is leaning into drama for the 2022-2023 season. The day after the network picked up three dramas to series, it’s ordered a fourth. The True Lies TV adaptation with Steve Howey and Ginger Gonzaga — Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis starred in the 1994 film from James Cameron — has been ordered to series. Check out the first photo of Howey and Gonzaga above. In True Lies, shocked to discover that her bland and unremarkable computer consultant husband is a skilled international spy, an unfulfilled suburban housewife is propelled into a life of danger and adventure when she’s recruited to work alongside him to save the world as they try to revitalize their passionless marriage. It took an extra day but True Lies, which had been expected to get a nod yesterday, along with CBS’ other new series orders, is officially picked up to series. As Deadline reported yesterday, the reboot of James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie, from Matt Nix, McG, Cameron and 20th Television, is targeted for midseason. It joins CBS’ other newly picked up hourlong series, Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd, which are expected to be on the fall schedule.
It is no surprise that CBS and True Lies studio 20th Television needed an extra day to hammer out a deal given the companies’ complicated history over the last decade. This is 20th TV’s first hourlong series order at CBS in 12 years, since dramedy Chaos, whose initial series pickup dramatically fell through after the two sides could not agree on a deal. Gold Open has partnered with the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment Cape to launch the inaugural Gold List which honors the most outstanding Asian and Pacific Islander (Api) achievements in film each year. Gold Open is part of Gold House, which bolsters multicultural movies to box office success — most notably, the movement brought shine to Parasite and Crazy Rich Asians.
Gold List was created to move the needle forward in regards to the fair inclusion of APIs in mainstream media by helping Api films secure major award nominations and recognition — and it’s about time. With anti-Asian racism surging during the pandemic, a celebration of this kind is more than welcomed to help eclipse all the toxicity faced by Asians as well as other underrepresented voices. It should be noted that Asians are the fastest-growing immigrant population, have higher-than-average consumers of digital media, and the second most-frequent moviegoers per year.

When Brian Dennehy died this past April at the age of 81, the “Everyman” character actor of extraordinary complexity left behind memorable performances in such films as 1979’s “10,” 1982’s “First Blood,” 1985’s “Cocoon” and “Silverado” and 1990 “Presumed Innocent,” countless TV appearances and gut wrenching, Tony Award-winning turns as Willy Loman in the 1999 revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” and as James Tyrone in the 2000 revival of Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.”

Whatever the future holds both for theatrical distribution and for at-home streaming, 2020 will no doubt mark the pivot point in which the destinies of both would forever change. But where and how one sees films will inevitably be less important than the films themselves, and even in this year of turmoil, there was always something to recommend, wherever it was available to be seen.

‘The Sleepover’ Review: Netflix’s Tepid Action-Comedy Offers Family-Friendly Thrills, but That’s All
Middle schooler Kevin (Maxwell Simkins) is prone to exaggeration, cooking up fanciful lies to sell to his family, his friends, even his teachers, all the better to imagine a world in which his suburban life isn’t quite so boring. Case in point: Trish Sie’s “The Sleepover,” which follows Kevin and his seemingly cookie-cutter family, opens with young Kevin regaling his class with a beloved tale of his own family history. It is, in actuality, the plot of the Ridley Scott film “The Martian.” That Kevin’s life is actually about to become much crazier than he could possibly dream of is just one of the many generic charms of Sie’s film,

"I don't think your mom is just a regular mom." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a family comedy titled The Sleepover, the latest from director Trish Sie, of Step Up All In and Pitch Perfect 3. When two siblings discover their seemingly normal mom is a former thief in witness protection who has been forced to pull one last job, they team up to rescue her over the course of an action-packed night. Joe Manganiello stars as an ex-flame of their mom who gets involved and helps the kids pull off this job and save the day. Starring Sadie Stanley, Maxwell Simkins, Ken Marino, Cree Cicchino, Lucas Jaye, Karla Souza, Enuka Okuma, Erik Griffin, with Malin Akerman. This looks so cheesy and absurdly fun, like the kind of Hollywood comedies they used to make in the 90s. But, uh, made by Netflix now. Still looks entertaining. Here's the...

Sometimes, a film manages to be big by actually being small and quiet. Concentrated in a small circle of family and neighbors, and centered around the mundane task of cleaning a dead relative’s home and refurbishing it for sale, Andrew Ahn’s sophomore feature “Driveways” speaks volumes about life, death, growing up and the contemporary America. The film premiered at last year’s edition of Berlinale before going on a predominantly American festival tour. Since last month, it is available on VOD.
Kathy is the single mother of Cody (Lucas Jaye in a breakthrough role) and the two of them arrive to an unnamed upstate New York town to clear out the house of her late sister Kelly. The sisters were estranged for a great part of their lives, Kelly is a decade or so older, and Kathy is simply the only living relative who can inherit the house.

You might be craving those loud, brash, blowed-up-real-good blockbusters that’d normally lay claim to half the screens of multiplexes this month. It’s almost the beginning of summer, and who has the willpower to fight that seasonal Pavlovian urge? (Just watch out for any action movie in which A-list stars are in a race against time with a killer virus. Still too soon.) In case it’s not glaringly obvious at this point, representation matters. In front of the camera, but behind it as well — perhaps even more so. Take, for instance, Andrew Ahn’s latest film, “Driveways.” The film stars Hong Chau as a single mother tasked with packing up her hoarder sister’s house after her death. Meanwhile, her shy son Cody (Lucas Jaye) comes out of his shell through a friendship with an older neighbor, played by the late, great Brian Dennehy in one of his final film roles.
The film is not explicitly about Asian American identity, at least not in the way Ahn’s career-launching debut film, “Spa Night,” was — deliberately and devastatingly. But the story, of two outsiders thrust into a community by circumstances outside of their control and the various characters who either welcome or discomfort them, is subtly deepened and enriched by the fact that they are Asian American.
