Horror movies about ‘influencers’ seem to be getting made more and more. If you are unsure what an influencer is exactly then a quick Google search will show you – ‘To put it simply, an influencer is any person who influences the behaviour of others. In a marketing context, influencers are individuals who collaborate with brands to promote products or services to their audience.’ Perhaps unsurprisingly, influencers in most films I have seen, come across as generally unlikeable. And that’s pretty much the case with Mean Spirited.
In the movie, a struggling YouTuber spends a few days with friends in the middle of nowhere in the hope of proven that his former friend (now a moderately famous actor) is an awful person who left him high and dry.

Dead by Midnight (Y2Kill) is the unexpected follow-up to Dead by Midnight (11pm Central). And I say unexpected because despite being a fun collection of stories, it pretty much stayed under everyone’s radar. But enough people did see it that a second film got greenlighted, and with a big enough budget to include a couple of genre heavyweights.
The film opens with The Mistress of Midnight sitting around hell, googling for reviews of the first film and unleashing her wrath on those who didn’t give it a thumbs up.
From here we leap to The Temptress introducing the first segment...

There are a lot of reasons why independent filmmakers gravitate towards ensemble pieces for their first few features, not the least of which is the company they keep. The now copies the mid-2000s, the mid-2000s copied the mid-’90s, and the mid-’90s copied the swiftness of ‘60s France. But while the particular subgenre of wayward teens is associated almost entirely with American culture, why is it that so many of these movies have so little to do with America itself? Is there nothing in between the camera and the subjects? An ethnography if one thing, but there should be some disconnect that invites the viewer to partake.
Beast Beast, the second film from Danny Madden, fails in that regard. There’s no real point of view, no real specificity beyond its sense of atmosphere. It’s Georgia, but we just know that because of the license plates.

In their near never-ending quest for box office gold Hollywood studios (in this case we’re talking about an “indie” upstart), another stand-up comedian is plucked from the clubs (in this case it’s arenas and stadiums) and plunked in front of a motion picture camera. That was the case of vaudeville and nightclub stars back in the “golden age”, but the idea of fashioning a flick around a comic’s “schtick’ really took flight forty years ago with Steve Martin as The Jerk. He became an enduring movie star, much like Rodney Dangerfield and later Tim Allen. A more recent example would be Amy Schumer breaking through with Trainwreck, though her follow-up flicks have struggled at the multiplex. Now comes a (hope to be) quirky lil’ low budget flick that stars a comedian who has certainly “paid his dues” over the last 22 years, bouncing between TV shows and supporting film roles.

With Joseph Khan’s Bodied, both of those reasons can apply. MGM has released a fantastic new full trailer for their upcoming Stargate: Origins series and it looks like it's going to be spectacularly fun! I love the tone of this as it has that adventurous Indiana Jones tone and spirit that a lot of fans enjoy. The trailer features lots of new footage an additional detail on the story that the series will tell. Here's the synopsis:
In 1939, Professor Paul Langford and his daughter Catherine are still grappling with the mysteries of the ancient relic they discovered in the Egyptian desert more than ten years ago. With war looming in Europe and funding running out, these brilliant minds are approaching their lowest ebb. Little do they know, answers are about to present themselves in a dangerous form, when the Nazi Occultist Dr. Wilhelm Brücke approaches their facility with a sinister motive.Enlisting the help of two young soldiers, Catherine must...
