In 2009, Alejandro Velez had overcome a lot of obstacles to get where he was. The then senior at Uc Berkeley had survived being kidnapped by terrorists while growing up in Medellín, Colombia, had beaten cancer and was just a few months away from beginning a lucrative career on Wall Street.
Then an off-hand remark by a professor changed everything.
“During a lecture, the professor brought up the fact that you could potentially grow mushrooms on coffee waste and for some odd reason I latched onto this idea,” Velez, 29, tells People.
After class, the finance major approached his professor and asked for more information.

Natalie Getz is a former Bachelor hopeful and the first-ever winner of Bachelor Pad.
In reviewing The Bachelorette for TV Fanatic this season, she brings her unique experience of having been through this insanity, as well as her spot-on commentary on the men seeking Emily Maynard's heart.
Who brought the drama tonight? What comment really brought out Emily's claws? Who emerged as one of the biggest d-bags in show history? And who charmed our fair Southern Belle across the pond?
Find out in Natalie's review of Episode 5 ...

This episode finally provided us with some serious drama! How much fun was it to watch Emily show us a different side to her? I personally enjoyed watching her show her backbone.
It's nice to see someone be themselves instead of always so damn nice.
I never could tell what Emily Maynard's expressions meant, but after last night I get it now.

Chris Harrison shows up at the top of the hour on "The Bachelorette," sporting some kicky purple cuffs, to inform the guys that there are three dates, including the dreaded two-on-one, and that they are headed to Bermuda! Wooooo!
Emily is already there, having a blast with Ricki. It's super cool she gets to travel along, that's a great experience for her. As long as she doesn't know her mom's off smooching 12 different guys every night. Heh.
The guys apparently rode there in a scooter gang, which is one of the funniest visuals the show has ever done. Alejandro calls the suite breathtaking and that might be the first words we've heard him say on camera since he introduced himself to Emily. Is he going to be a factor this episode?

Emily's motherhood was on full display this week. When she wasn't hugging a smiling Ricki, she was baking cookies, hanging out with soccer moms, or talking about kids.
She was also busy trying waaaaaay too hard with the Potential Future Husbands. Even as she kicked them off, she continued to lay on the compliments. Emily: they have to be there and hit on you. They are contractually obligated. Why are you embarrassing yourself and me, because I have to watch and be embarrassed on behalf of all women in the universe?
In more important news, Prettiest Potential Future Husband Michael wore his shiny flowing locks in no less than four hairstyles this week. He started the episode with it half up, like a princess. For more on his hairstyles and Emily's quest, ready on.
1-on-1 Date: Ryan

It’s numbingly odd, the ways in which Emily Maynard—who’s done this sort of thing before—naively treats The Bachelorette, as if this is some sort of courting that every ugly person gets to do, too. It’s a nice thought, for her to believe that these 25 guys are each attracted to her and would really like a piece of her heart, but that’s ignoring the real situation here, the one that Ryan stopped just short of blatantly screaming to Emily on the season’s first solo date: if you put 25 guys in one room to compete for a girl, it does not matter one single fuck who the girl is. At all. You could put 25 guys in one room and tell them to compete for a pile of dog shit and you’ve still got a battle on your hands. No one cares about the object...
