The new movie ‘Flex Is Kings,’ from documentarian filmmakers Michael Beach Nichols and Deidre School, made an admirable attempt to showcase how the importance of having a talent you excel in can not only enrich your future, but society as a whole. While the helmers did successfully prove that having confidence and a support system can help in achieving your goals, the movie unfortunately failed [ Read More ]

An eye-popper showing the old pop and lock brought to thrilling, disorienting extremes, Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols's Flex Is Kings movingly documents the flex dance scene centered around Brooklyn's BattleFest.
Fluid and at times disorienting, flex centers on the rhythmic italicization of the human body; the highlights here often involve what looks like the dislocation of dancers' shoulders as they work through their slo-mo, zero-g contortions. The best dancers build to mad flourishes they call "punch lines" and even incorporate some tough-minded street-life storytelling into their self-taught routines — it's autobiography as joyous athleticism.

Directed By: Michael Noer
Denmark, 2013
Power and money are the vital forces in this high octane crime thriller. When organized crime grabs hold of the way of life for desperate Casper, he must rely on the only person he can trust: his brother. Michael Noer carefully balances the brutish depiction of street crime with the tenderness of growing up in a tight knit family. The film breaks any spell of an innocent youth being corrupt by crime, by shining the spotlight on a delinquent who turns around and becomes innocent.
2. Flex Is Kings
Directed By: Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols
USA, 2013
Originating in Brooklyn, flexing, or a style of freeform street dance, is the subject matter behind Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichol’s solid documentary, Flex Is Kings. Characterized by rhythmic contortionist movements combined with waving, tutting and gliding; the film is about so much more than the subject matter at hand.

"Flex Is Kings" and its inspirational look at Brooklyn's flex dancing movement has been one of the standouts of this year's Tribeca Film Festival. It's a film with enough grit to attract indie crowds and enough uplift to delight a more mainstream audience. The highly athletic style of dance at the center of the low-budget documentary involves contortions and jumping that are daring, aggressive and even, at points balletic. The dancers' artistry contrasts sharply with their blighted surroundings. Directors Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols filmed their slice of life documentary over...

This outlet provides the means to direct physical energy into an utterly unique social experience of trickery and showmanship. For Flizzo and Jay, they just don’t perform, they live and breathe flex. Flex Is Kings largely follows the lives of these two friends, among others, on their parallel paths in making flex known to the masses, and does so with the most earnest of respect for...

Those addicted to documentaries will immediately recall David Lachappelle's 2005 film Rize once they've read the plot summary of Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols' fascinating Flex is Kings. The two films are certainly not dissimilar, but in the end, Flex is Kings, much like the art form it inspects and celebrates, is a story about unique individuals and the lives they lead. This riveting non-fiction feature is as much a meditation on beauty, art, and the courage it takes to be unique as it is a showcasing of a (relatively) new and relentlessly entertaining form of street dance. Flex, in contrast to Rize's Clowning and Krumping, is a less high-octane blast of aggressive energy and eye-popping physicality than it is a fluid and lyrical...

I have always found the body-contorting dance form of street dancing, contemporarily known as “flexing”, to be a creative and exhilarating art form. The documentary Flex is Kings, directed by Deidre Schoo and Michael Beach Nichols, manages to reaffirm those original perceptions of the very competitive urban dance movement. However, aside from showcasing “flexing’s” relevance as a formal art form, Kings didn’t exceed my expectations as a feature documentary. Set in Brooklyn, East New York, Kings focuses on the lives of Jermaine "Flizzo" Clement and Jonathan "Jay Donn" George. Flizzo, a bearded, heavy-set dancer, distinguishes himself with a ‘punchline’ trick of a having a bird...

We here at NextMovie aren't just about the big-budget blockbusters. We're shallow, but we're not that shallow. (Fine, we're pretty shallow.)
April 17 begins the Tribeca Film Festival, where "little films that could" that really aren't that little and often star big-name actors are submitted to be judged by Hollywood's finest discerning eyes and also those of Eva Longoria.
Eva has to watch many films, but we think you guys would be specifically interested in the following ten.
'Adult World'
Defying the ever-popular "girl works at a sex shop in upstate New York in order to fund her completely stagnated poetry career" stereotype in movies, "Adult World" stars Emma Roberts as protege and John Cusack as mentor as the former is forced to take a post-graduate job in an intercourse parlor (which is way more fun to say than "sex shop"). Eventually, Roberts' character bonds with her sexified (read:...
