During the Paris Fan Festival, Taz Skylar, the actor cast to portray Sanji in Netflix’s One Piece Live-Action series, opened up about the initial wave of negative comments he faced on social media following the casting announcement.
During the festival’s Q/A session, Taz recounted his very first exposure to criticism and it was around the time when the One Piece casting news came out. He revealed that his friends informed him that his name was trending on Twitter alongside references to his resemblance to rapper Eminem.
“The best way to get me to do something is tell me I can’t do it,” Skylar stated, revealing that rather than being deterred by the negative feedback, he found motivation in the challenge. “I remember I laughed because I was like, you know what, they have a point. I do kind of look a little bit like Em,” he added.

One Piece’s live-action announcement was certainly surprising. Given the history of live-action movies and series, especially in the anime genre, fans initially had their expectations low, and there was a general belief that the Netflix series would be another disappointment.

Yet, surprisingly and fortunately, the series was an immense success. Not only did the series remain true to the source, but it was the casting and actors who stole the spotlight. While actors like Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, and others impressed fans with their talents, Taz Skylar as Sanji stole the show, with many fans declaring his Sanji better than the anime’s version. In a recent appearance, the actor revealed how the negative comments regarding his casting really pushed him to the extreme.

While multiple Korean TV series have connected with global audiences, Japan’s production committees, terrestrial broadcasters and talent agencies have kept their TV industry tightly focused on a local market.
Anime and variety have long remained the Japanese TV industry’s best-known exports, while the premium end of the spectrum has largely escaped Japanese producers. That is despite multinational shows like Hulu’s “Shogun,” HBO’s “Tokyo Vice” and Netflix’s “House of Ninjas” underscoring the potentially substantial overseas interest in Japan-set live-action drama.
“House of the Owl,” set to begin airing on Disney+ and Hulu from next week, is both an outlier and a potential mold breaker.

The One Piece Live-Action has excelled in almost every aspect of creating a successful anime adaptation. The series has got the best of every world, be it editing or storyline, but the cast was the main thing it got just right. The actors who portrayed the roles of One Piece characters, especially the Straw Hat crew are one of the most important reasons why the series became such a huge success.
Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Zoro, Jacob Romero as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, and Emily Rudd as Nami were perfect in their character portrayals.

Upon his debut as the face of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series, Iñaki Godoy impressed everyone with his portrayal of Monkey D. Luffy, the amiable and upbeat leader of the Straw Hat Pirates and a highly recognizable manga and anime character. Despite his extensive experience as a star in Telemundo’s series La querida del Centauro and Netflix’s The Imperfects, the young actor was still relatively unknown.
Nevertheless, it is inspiring to see a 20-year-old succeed to this extent (he presently has over 2.5 million Instagram followers). The fantasy adventure series, which was based on the well-known Japanese manga series, made the Mexican actor extremely popular among youths.
Iñaki Godoy in One Piece
Any actor, though, is aware that a single role does not define a career. Though Godoy is appreciative of the chance to bring Luffy to life, he is aware that he is capable of so much more.

What's Netflix thrown up for us this week? "Knights of the Zodiac" of course! What is that? Well, I'll be honest, I had no idea either. But I've taken a quick look-see and as it turns out, this Japanese fantasy film is proving pretty popular with Netflixers stateside.
A live-action adaptation of Masami Kurumada's manga, "Saint Seya," "Knights of the Zodiac" stars Japanese actor Mackenyu, alongside Madison Iseman and Nick Stahl. The film is also noteworthy for reuniting Sean Bean and Famke Janssen almost 30 years after they shared the screen in "GoldenEye." Co-produced by Toei and directed by "The Witcher" illustrator/producer Tomasz Tomek Bagiński, the film also features stunt and fight choreography from former Jackie Chan stunt team member and the man behind the action in Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," Andy Cheng.
Starting to sound like it might be ok, right? Well you...

It’s hard not to be the ‘belle of the ball’ when you’ve just starred in one of the most well-received live-action anime series on the block. So, it makes complete sense that Mackenyu has become an even bigger deal since the Netflix original dropped. His role as the three-sword-wielding, green-haired swordsman, Zoro, has garnered him the right kind of attention. His meteoric rise to fame has been nothing short of awe-inspiring, and his journey has been a fascinating one. More than just another pretty face, he has shown his acting chops in more than a handful of productions before One...

There’s a version of “One Piece” that follows Eiichiro Oda’s original manga more closely. In the original story, the East Blue Saga chronicles Luffy and his pirate crew’s adventures right until they hit Loguetown, the last big port before they hit the Grand Line — a stretch of sea known for bigger, badder pirates and more impressive treasure.
It’s a storytelling formula that’s common in manga. You spend the first major arc building up your hero and introducing viewers to the stakes of this world and end the story right before the next major challenge. But instead of ending with a multi-enemy fight at Loguetown, the first season of Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” stops right before that, ending with Luffy’s (Iñaki Godoy) fight with Arlong (McKinley Belcher III). The culprit? Berries — er, money.
“There was a version of the season that included Lowertown, but it was 10 episodes long,...

It looks like Netflix won't be giving "One Piece" the "Cowboy Bebop" treatment. The new live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's manga has just been renewed for a second season, as announced by the author himself. "Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show!" Oda shared in a message via "Transponder Snail." He added: "The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!"
The live-action "One Piece" premiered on the streamer in late August and has been met with praise from fans of both the manga and Toei Animation's long-running anime adaptation. With 20 seasons of that series and counting, plus 106 volumes of the manga, there's plenty more source material for the latest iteration of the story to pull from. The series follows a crew of adventurers called the Straw Hat Pirates, led by semi-superpowered Monkey D.

Just two weeks after the premiere of One Piece, Netflix has officially announced the live-action series has been renewed for season two. One Piece‘s creator and illustrator Eiichiro Oda even shot a short video – with the help of a Transponder Snail – confirming the good news. Oda hinted that season two will find the Straw Hat crew in need of a doctor, and then drew Tony Tony Chopper.
Oda’s message also asked fans, both those who love the popular Manga and those who were just introduced to Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag crew, to be patient. The ongoing writers and actors strike is going to push back the start of production for the just-announced second season.
Eiichiro Oda’s full message:
“To the Straw Hat Grand Fleet: What did you think of Season 1 of the live-action One Piece? I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga series One Piece launched last week and seems to have been a big success. Fans are eager for more, and producers told Variety that scripts for One Piece season 2 are already complete.
“We’ve got scripts ready,” said Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, which produces the series. Production on One Piece season 2 obviously can’t get underway until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved, but once they’re able to start, Tomorrow Studios president Beck Clements said the new season could debut as early as next year. “Realistically, hopefully, a year away, if we move very quickly, and that is a possibility,” Clements said. “Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air.“
