The Rumors Were Right, One Piece Season 3 Is a Go and Will Begin Production Sooner Than Expected
Image
After weeks of speculation and fan theories, it is finally official that One Piece season 3 is happening. Joe Manganiello, who will portray the infamous villain Mr. 0 (Crocodile) in season 2, confirmed that filming for the third installment of Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation will begin later in 2025. In a recent interview, Manganiello mentioned the production break between seasons and his upcoming return to set, hinting at a smooth continuation for the beloved series.

This confirmation from @OP_Netflix_Fan on X comes at a time when fans were unsure about the show's future, especially following the departure of co-showrunner Matt Owens earlier this year. While Netflix has remained tight-lipped, this latest news aligns with earlier industry buzz. A Writers Guild of America listing hinted that season 3 would be produced between 2025 and 2026, which now appears to be accurate. The early production start could also mean a shorter wait between seasons, which...

Luffy Clearly Lost That Fight, Iñaki Godoy Faces Off Against Taz Skyler on One Piece Live Action Set
Image
All of us are aware of the sucky nature of Netflix’s live-action anime adaptations. With every series, Netflix manages to destroy our beloved characters and trash our favorite stories, so when everyone saw how wonderfully One Piece had been adapted, we praised it and asked for a second season.

With the second season’s filming having recently ended, we’ve got access to some hilarious behind-the-scenes clips from the live-action One Piece set, and one of these clips shows Luffy losing to Sanji.

Image
As the second season of One Piece’s live-action adaptation nears its release, the cast is up and active again with promoting the show. For the new cast, the Instagram page has been feeding us plenty of content and talking about how they understand their roles.

Fans of One Piececan feel proud of this franchise setting another record at the Osaka Comic Con recently, with a record number of fans wearing straw hats on the third and final day of the event on May 4th. As three stars of the live-action One Piece show on Netflix took to the stage, a total of 897 fans donned their Luffy-inspired hats as a salute to their favorite franchise.

Merchandise and cosplay are nothing new in the anime world, but only a truly massive franchise like One Piece could set a verified record with not just its manga sales, but also its merchandise. To help emphasize this achievement, One Piece stars Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Emily Rudd held up a Guinness World Records certificate for all to see, proving once again that the aging One Piece franchise isn't slowing down by any means.

‘One Piece’: Director Reveals Capoeira Inspiration for Luffy’s Gear 5th Form
Image
It’s well-known that One Piece and its main character, Luffy, have strong influences from Brazil. However, the revelation that Capoeira played a role in Luffy’s new Gear 5th form surprised many fans.

Animation director Vincent Chansard, who worked on various episodes, openings, and specials of the One Piece franchise, shared that he drew inspiration from Capoeira for Luffy’s Gear 5th transformation, also known as the Fifth Gear.

Chansard took to Twitter to explain his thought process: “Over time, in the manga, Luffy feels like a pretty all-rounded Mma fighter with boxing at his core, using punches, kicks, some grabs, but not many open-hand techniques.” he wrote.

One Piece Star Mackenyu’s Dream for a Sequel Is Next to Impossible After $6.9 Million Box Office Disaster of Knights of the Zodiac
Image
Mackenyu has slowly become the king of anime-to-live action adaptations, from playing Arata Wataya in Chihayafuru to Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s One Piece. Most of his films have been successful due to the nostalgia of the series and his enthusiastic performance.

Some live actions, however, are beyond Mackenyu’s capability to save. Knights of the Zodiac was doomed by its writers, despite the potential its actors brought to the table. They disrespected the original Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac manga series by stripping the characters of their personalities.

Mackenyu, on the other hand, was very inspired by the film and found it groundbreaking for having a diverse cast. The One Piece star might be too optimistic towards Knights of the Zodiac since he’s hoping fans will want a sequel. However, why would a film that only made $6.9 million ever be renewed for another disaster?

“No, we’re saving Hollywood”: Netflix Chief Ted Sarandos Making the Wildest Claim Wasn’t on My 2025 Bingo Card but Here We Are
Image
It is not news that Netflix has been at the forefront of the streaming wars and has been increasingly gravitating towards not just movie and TV content, but also reality TV, live TV, and even, apparently, podcasts. The streaming giant has long been the market leader, but the model it started is largely credited with killing the theatrical business like no other.

However, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos believes the opposite. Well, not exactly, but Sarandos claimed that they were ‘saving Hollywood’ is probably one of the most shocking statements to come out of Netflix’s leadership since that executive who said Oppenheimer would have had the same impact if it were released on the streamer.

One Piece: I’m Pretty Convinced Oda Has Forgotten About 1 Supernova and It May Be Too Late to Bring Him Back
Image
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is an epic with spectacular settings, amazing characters, and exhilarating conflicts. The story is appreciated as one of the most well-written pieces of literature in existence, and this is partially due to the way Oda treats his characters. Every character is important to the story, and Oda never forgets a character.

While I am a staunch believer of the same, I have to point out that Oda sensei has sidelined a very interesting character in his story. Urouge, one of the Supernovas, alongside characters like Luffy, Zoro, Law, and Kidd, has not played a pivotal role in the story since Sabaody, and as One Piece heads into its finale, the chances of bringing him back seem unlikely.

One Piece: Oda Had No Business Dropping the Greatest One-Liner That Made Me Cry Real Tears
Image
On the surface, One Piece is portrayed as a comedic series that is filled with adventure and some science fiction, but the one aspect embedded within the story that I find particularly intriguing is the emotional element of the narrative. There are a few moments in One Piece that have brought out some serious emotions within the fans.

For me, this moment specifically happened after the time skip in the narrative, which, according to many One Piece fans, did not have as many emotional moments as the plot before the time skip. This particular moment marked the conclusion of the Dressrosa arc, which also had the greatest one-liner that Eiichiro Oda ever wrote in the history of One Piece.

The instance that I am talking about is the final moment when Luffy and the Straw Hat crew are escaping from Dressrosa Island, and Admiral Fujitora understands why Luffy is loved by everyone so much.

Before One Piece, Mackenyu Was a Warrior in Another Netflix’s Anime Adaptation That Bombed Hard
Image
The majority of fans first got to know Mackenyu from Netflix’s One Piece live-action series, which, in fact, is one of the brightest highlights of his career. However, little do people know that it wasn’t the first time he worked with Netflix for a Japanese anime live-action adaptation. How could one forget his role in Rurouni Kenshin?

The answer to that is quite simple, actually. The said Rurouni Kenshin Netflix adaptation fell flat on the floor, and so Mackenyu’s presence wasn’t noticed that much by the media as a consequence. In fact, the story of this tragic missed opportunity goes even darker than you might expect.

Why do the Rurouni Kenshin live-action movies have such negative reviews?

I Badly Want Netflix Not to Repeat 1 Blunder With Mackenyu’s Zoro in One Piece Live Action Season 2
Image
Zoro might be cool and all-powerful at times, but that’s not the exact reason why we fell in love with his character in the first place. While obviously I’m super stoked about the upcoming Season 2 of One Piece live-action adaptation, and truly believe it has all the potential to be nothing short of legendary, I still wish they would improve on one crucial aspect of Mackenyu’s Zoro.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying Mackenyu’s portrayal of Zoro was bad or anything. But I believe there’s this one thing they should try changing about his character from Season 1, which kind of made him look out of character. If Netflix could somehow bring Zoro’s goofiness to the live action, fans would go crazy. However, they must do it with much caution!

Zoro’s funny shenanigans are what make him so adored in...

“I grew up in Los Angeles”: One Piece’s Zoro Mackenyu Is Living a Double Life, Details on His Japanese Roots

Mackenyu Arata, who One Piece fans know as Roronoa Zoro, gave one of the most stellar performances in the epic One Piece live-action adaptation on Netflix. His portrayal of the Straw Hat swordsman was so great that fans discuss his performance to this day and appreciate him for bringing such an iconic and powerful character to life.

He was one of the most anticipated actors for the One Piece live-action series because he has also played many other popular anime characters in other live-action adaptations. It truly explains his dedication towards his profession and his love for the Japanese anime culture. However, understanding and getting hold of the Japanese culture was not so easy for him in the beginning.

Kaido Thought He Was the JoyBoy: Our Worlds May Shatter When Eiichiro Oda Debunks the True Meaning of Kaido’s Words to Luffy
Image
Kaido was one of the most interesting characters in all of One Piece. Even after his defeat against Luffy, little is known about him. But Oda seems to have left the fans some breadcrumbs to try to get the amateur sleuths to figure things out. In One Piece chapter 1035, a small flashback gave us one of the most chilling reveals about Kaido.

Not through violence, but through hope. Young Kaido, grinning widely, tells King that he’s the only one who can change the world. While this might seem to be something innocent, it reveals something extremely important when we consider the way it is worded.

Kaido believed he possessed the destiny of JoyBoy

Kaido, even as a child, did not just want to be a guy trying to become Pirate King; instead, he genuinely thought he was the chosen one. That moment tells us more about the Strongest Creature than his battles do.

“I wanted to be loyal..”: Mackenyu’s Fear Made Zoro So Good in Netflix’s One Piece Live Action
Image
Taking on a character as iconic as Roronoa Zoro is an intimidating task. Especially in live-actions, which are often adduced to be underwhelming copies of the original. But Netflix’s One Piece live-action series shows how it is done with Mackenyu’s Zoro, who stood firm, being calm, cold, and loyal, just like the original Zoro.

But surprisingly enough, the reason for that authenticity is not confidence, but fear. Instead of improvising or adding flair, Mackenyu internalized the source material. He realized that the character as he is, is an enigma that can not be perfectly replicated, much less changed for the better.

Fear was the source of Mackenyu’s greatest strength

Mackenyu studied Zoro’s attitude, presence, and decisions across the manga before stepping into the costume. This is why he is getting praised for an accurate portrayal of the three sword wielder.

Mackenyu Explains How He Stayed True to Zoro in One Piece Live-Action Series
Image
The live-action One Piece series on Netflix has been a huge hit, and fans are eagerly awaiting the second season after filming wrapped. The show, based on Eiichiro Oda’s popular manga, became a success thanks to its loyal adaptation of the beloved characters.

One standout character is Roronoa Zoro, played by Japanese actor Mackenyu, whose portrayal has won praise from both One Piece fans and newcomers alike.

Zoro, with his signature green hair and multi-sword fighting style, is one of the most famous characters in anime and manga. Naturally, many fans were worried about how the character would translate into a live-action series.

However, Netflix’s adaptation put those concerns to rest. Mackenyu’s portrayal of Zoro has been a key factor in the show’s success.

"I Did My Best to Deliver That": 'One Piece' Star Explains How the Live-Action Series Nailed Zoro's Debut
Image
The second season of One Piece has wrapped filming with old and new fans of the franchise alike waiting to see where Monkey D. Luffy's (Iñaki Godoy) journey takes him next. Based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda, the live-action adaptation of One Piece arrived in 2023 and established itself as a massive success for Netflix. Key to the show's success on the streamer was the authenticity of its characters, and none delivered on his role quite like Japanese actor, Mackenyu, who plays Roronoa Zoro. From the iconic green hair to his unique multi-sword fighting style, Mackenyu embodied Zoro perfectly from the very beginning. So, how did that come about?

Zoro is arguably one of the most beloved anime and manga characters there is. So there was understandably some skepticism surrounding the authenticity of his adaptation. However, Netflix's One Piece properly squashed those fears, and Mackenyu has revealed the secret behind this successful portrayal.

There is a lot of anticipation among fans of the popular manga, One Piece, regarding the second season of Netflix's live-action adaption of the story. Filming on Season 2 has already wrapped, so fans can look forward to an announcement regarding a release date sometime soon...we hope. Monkey D. Luffy's (Iñaki Godoy) and his desire to become the King of the Pirates is key to the One Piece storyline, and so is his Devil Fruit power, Gomu Gomu no Mi. Netflix's live-action One Pieceadaptation loses its showrunner.

Per Deadline, One Piece developer and showrunner Matt Owens has officially stepped away from the series following the conclusion of production on its second season. Owens explained the decision via a social media post in which he wrote, "The last six years working on the live-action One Piece have been a life-changing journey. A dream come true. It’s also been A Lot. So I'm stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health."

Based on the long-running manga of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, Netflix's One Piece premiered in 2023 to largely positive reviews from critics and an outpouring of praise from audiences. Netflix's 'One Piece' Showrunner Steps Down Ahead of Season 2 Debut
Image
In an unfortunate bit of news, Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece is losing a key member of its production crew. The series found massive success when it was initially released in August 2023, with its eight episodes introducing new and seasoned One Piece fans to a new iteration of the East Blue Saga. Netflix's One Piece was praised for its attention to detail in worldbuilding as well as its phenomenal cast that brought the Straw Hats to life, including the likes of Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronora Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

Now, Matt Owens, who was the showrunner for season 1 and the upcoming season 2, will be stepping down from his position on the show. Owens' latest Instagram post revealed that the creator would be taking a break for mental health reasons, as the post would...

‘One Piece’ Co-Showrunner Matt Owens Steps Away from Hit Series Citing Need to Focus on ‘Mental Health’
Image
Looks like you can’t stay King of the Pirates forever. After being at the helm of the hit Netflix live adaptation of the popular manga and anime series “One Piece,” executive producer and co-showrunner Matt Owens announced in an Instagram post on Friday, March 21, that he would be leaving the series in order to address personal issues he’s currently facing.

“The 6 years working on the live action ‘One Piece’ has been a life changing journey. A dream come true. It’s also been A Lot,” Owens wrote in his post. “So I’m stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health.”

Development on the show began in 2017, with Netflix purchasing it in 2020 and bringing on Steven Maeda as showrunner in 2021. Owens was serving as head writer and executive producer on the project at the time, but given the title...

'One Piece' Suffers Another Major Loss Ahead of Season 2 for Netflix
Image
Another of the main creative forces behind Netflix's One Piece live-action adaptation is jumping off the Going Merry after Season 2 wrapped production. Matt Owens, who originally co-created and served as co-showrunner on the series with Steven Maeda has decided to step back to focus on his mental health. With his decision announced on Instagram, the main creative duo who spearheaded the effort at Netflix to adapt Eiichirô Oda's long-running manga is no longer involved, or, at the very least, is no longer calling the shots. Only Percy Jackson and the Olympians writer and co-executive producer Joe Tracz remains as showrunner for post-production after he took over for Maeda last April.

Owens has arguably been the mastermind behind One Piece, not only shaping the first two seasons but also laying out how the future would look for the show as it continued to adapt more of the manga. He's...

Netflix Has a Shot at Redemption in One Piece Season 2 After Giving Mackenyu Underwhelming Zoro Fight Sequences
Image
Netflix’s One Piece has been a rare success in the world of live-action anime adaptations. After many failures, the wonderfully directed and well-budgeted One Piece Live Action shines and targets a different kind of audience, further spreading the charms of One Piece.

The first season of the live-action show was great, but if there is one thing that needs to be pointed out, it is that they have to up the stakes when it comes to fight scenes, especially when it comes to one main character.

Although it is true that One Piece has a whole host of tropes and themes to offer, it is a Shonen, and action is a huge part of the story. Mackenyu’s Zoro is remarkably on point when it comes to demeanor but falls short with the action sequences.

Netflix's 'One Piece' Season 2 Set Photos Adapts Little Garden Arc Battle
Image
The Netflix live-action adaptation of One Piece is moving along smoothly, as Season 2 recently wrapped filming and one actor from the show confirmed that a third season is on the way. However, despite how far along the show's production is, there have hardly been any hints about what longtime anime and manga fans can expect in the coming episodes, and how far along it will get into the next story arc. Now, a new image from the set of Season 2 has been revealed online, and it's a clear indicator that the series will adapt one of the essential fights in the manga.

The One Piece Netflix Fan account on X has tweeted an image that shows a set built to look like the Little Garden Island, as well as a giant Wax Candle structure built by one of the villains in the manga. Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece...

“It Took Me Like Three Months": Taz Skylar Discusses Sanji's Fighting Style in 'One Piece' Season 2
Image
The One Piece is the elusive treasure that is capable of making the captain of the Going Merry, Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), King of the Pirates. The journey to fulfilling his ambition is one he cannot make alone, given that sailing a ship alone is nigh impossible, and it'd be easier to face difficult foes with a crew at one's back. Step forward, the Straw Hat crew, which consists of the sword-wielding badass, Roronoa Zoro, played by Mackenyu, the chef, Vinsmoke Sanji, played by Taz Skylar, the navigator, Nami, played by Emily Rudd, and the sniper, Usopp, played by Jacob Romero Gibson. Together, they bring a wide range of skills that hopefully will see them achieve their goal.

Netflix's 'One Piece' Season 3 Filming Window Confirmed By Mackenyu
Image
One Piece Season 2 may not even have a release date yet, but it seems Netflix is in it for the long haul. In anticipation of the follow-up to the acclaimed first season, many fans have wondered how the streamer will handle the ambitious adventure the Straw Hat Pirates are about to embark on. A behind-the-scenes look at the production, which finished in Cape Town, South Africa, earlier this year, revealed a far more expansive (and costly) endeavor for the anime adaptation. However, Netflix is putting their money where their mouth is, as it prepares to make One Piece Season 3 sooner rather than later.

During an interview with Crunchyroll about his upcoming role in the video game Assassin's Creed Shadows, One Piece star Mackenyu let it slip that the Netflix anime adaptation is set to film Season 3 later this year. The Zoro actor did not go into detail on exactly when that will happen,...

One Piece Season 2 Release Date Window Gets an Update From Sanji Actor
Image
One Piece star Taz Skyler teased the potential release date window for the highly-anticipated second installment of the hit Netflix series. This comes after the live-action adaptation had just recently wrapped up its Season 2 production last December, after seven months of filming in South Africa.

During a recent interview with The Direct, Skyler was asked about the ongoing online speculations regarding the release date window for One Piece Season 2, after Netflix excluded the show’s from its 2025 slate. "I've heard multiple versions myself, so I'd probably be getting myself into trouble if I did say. But at the same time, I can quite honestly say I don't think it's clear yet, but I could again. I don't know if I'm gonna get into trouble, but I could probably say with most confidence, it's not further than that [2026] window." If the streamer is indeed targeting a 2026 release date for the show’s return,...

On February 21st, 2025, Crunchyroll published an interview with actor Mackenyu, who plays Zoro in One Piece. However, when asked if he had a message for his fans who are waiting for his next project, he revealed the following:

“The next project is going to be One Piece Season 2. We do have projects lined up for this year before we shoot Season 3 of One Piece, but I can’t tell you anything about that, so it’s not going to be fun for y’all.”

So not only did...

One Piece's Live-Action Dr. Kureha Actor Recalls Getting the Role After Jamie Lee Curtis Missed Out
Image
Hollywood icon and incoming One Piecestar Katey Sagal discusses landing her iconic role after Jamie Lee Curtis missed out on the part.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Sagal opened up about claiming the role as Dr. Kureha of Drum Island after fellow Hollywood icon and scream queen extraordinaire Jamie Lee Curtis turned the part down due to scheduling conflicts with her upcoming horror-comedy sequel, Freakier Friday. "If you haven’t watched live-action One Piece, you have to watch it. It’s on Netflix. I saw it by accident. We were just scrolling around and there it was. I was not familiar with the manga," Sagal recalled. "And like within a month, my agents call me and say ‘Hey, we got this offer for you on this show called One Piece. We’re not sure what it is.’ I was like ‘Are you freaking kidding me?’ So, I immediately—I just got back from South Africa.

In the upcoming season, Sagal will be portraying the fan-favorite role of Dr. Kureha, while Crocodile or Mr. 0 will be played by Joe Manganiello.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Sagal hinted at how long Manganiello's Crocodile will appear in One Piece Season 2, revealing that the villain will seemingly have a much bigger role in the show’s potential third season. "He’s on it, too! Except I think they’re setting him up for the third season. I think—I do believe he came in for the second season, sort of towards the end, because I think he’s the big arch-villain in the third season. All the manga people will know—I don’t read the manga," she said. This would make sense,...

Before his breakthrough as Zoro in One Piece live-action, Mackenyu worked on notable projects. From Tokyo Ghoul to Rurouni Kenshin, he has a diverse roster of works. But that is not all, considering his penchant for games.

In particular, his affinity toward Assassin’s Creed is the hot topic of late. His joining the voice cast was a piece of delightful news for most fans. But that is not the end of it all.
