Wondering what you’ll watch when The Hunger Games franchise is over? We’ve got some ideas…
As well as sequels, remakes, and comic book adaptations, there’s one kind of movie you can feel fairly sure is going to keep popping up at a cinema near you: young adult adaptations. Stories about teenagers are still doing big business in the book trade, and thanks to Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games, Hollywood is convinced of the genre’s appeal, too.
A couple of new franchises have already been kicked off – there’s still at least another Divergent sequel on the way, and another Maze Runner sequel – but what’s more interesting is the list of Ya novels that have been optioned and may soon be taking over the box office. Now, not all of the adaptations on this list will see the light of day,...

Seeing as how The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug laid the holiday movie season to waste, it's safe to assume we're going to be seeing a lot more dragon-centric films in the next few years. To whit, Universal has hired Jay Basu to adapt Julie Kagawa's fantasy book Talon. The Ya novel follows the adventures of a dragon-slaying warrior who, of course, falls in love with a dragon disguised as a human. How confident are they of our all-consuming dragon love? The book won't even be released until October 28, 2014. Let's hope we all haven't moved on to gargoyles by then, because you honestly never know.

Not only are Young Adult novels being optioned for film adaptation at lightning speed these days, but they're also starting to be picked up before they're even written! According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Harlequin Teen and Universal Pictures snatched up the rights to a 104-page story proposal submitted by Kagawa and considered "strong" by those companies. THR describes the upcoming work as follows: The supernatural story is set in a present-day coastal town where mythical creatures hide amongst us cloaked as humans. Slayers belonging to an order that dates back to St. George infiltrate the town disguised as out-of-town kids, setting up a confrontation and, as is the case with Ya books, a love triangle. The deal, which sets the first of five books up for release in 2015, was ;....

Relax, kids, the Winchesters are not heading to the big screen (although that would be kind of cool as long as it doesn't have any Sam flashbacks about having coffee or petting dogs). We're talking about a new as of yet untitled project that Universal has locked up the rights to.

There always has to be a friggin' love triangle. More on this one soon.

Hollywood’s on a real purchase spree this week, with several stories over the past few days telling of big buys and small buys on spec scripts, and even a pre-existing property. Let’s get down to it.
First up, Deadline has learned that Warner Bros. will collaborate with popular Twitter user Kelly Oxford on her first feature, Son of a Bitch. Said to be reminiscent of Bridesmaids, the film will revolve around “a young stoner who tries to maintain her popular party image even after discovering she’s pregnant”; Steve Golin and Kerry Kohansky-Roberts are producing. If her amusing tweets are any indication — a six-figure deal has me thinking that’s the case — something witty may be on the way.
Next up, Deadline also reports that Palomar Pictures have bit into the juicy apple of young adult fiction, picking up Julie Kagawa‘s Blood of Eden. The first book,...

According to Deadline, Palomar Pictures has acquired screen rights to Blood of Eden, a book series by young adult author Julie Kagawa. The series begins with "The Immortal Rules", which Harlequin Teen published this week.
“It’s simply a great story with an electrifying heroine,” said Palomar principal Joni Sighvatsson. “It makes the series an ideal subject for a film adaptation. Julie’s ability to familiarize the reader with this complex world in a few pages demonstrates the cinematic qualities of her imagination and complements my own sensibilities as a film producer.”
