This is a weird year for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys, as none of the nominated songs are particularly smash hits, unlike past years with winners like Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’s “Old Town Road (Remix),” Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still” or Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”
SEEGold Derby Music Awards nominations: ‘Barbie,’ Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, …
The biggest hit here (by far) is Taylor Swift’s “Karma.” However, the solo version is the one that’s really a big hit. The remix featuring Ice Spice, which is the version nominated here, has only racked up a relatively modest 74 million streams, which would make it only the third most streamed hit here. That version was also not particularly well received, which could hurt its chances. Still, voters might just turn a blind eye to which version they are voting for,...

Flatbush Zombies member Erick the Architect has teamed up with funk legend George Clinton for a new single titled “Ezekiel’s Wheel.”
Arriving ahead of Erick’s forthcoming debut solo album, I’ve Never Been Here Before, “Ezekiel’s Wheel” demonstrates his style, combining soul, funk, and hip-hop influences with free-flowing verses inspired by his upbringing attending church with his family in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Between Erick’s stanzas, Clinton interjects with anchoring lines like: “And there it is/ so goes the story/ Do the best you can/ and then funk it.”
The single features a beat produced by Matt Zara and arrives today along with a visualizer consisting of shots of Erick and Clinton. Watch it below.
So far, Erick has shared three other singles from I’ve Never Been Here Before. In July 2023, he dropped the lead single “Parkour,” which featured production by James Blake. In October, he shared “Ambrosia” featuring Channel Tres,...

Flatbush Zombies member Erick the Architect has announced his highly-anticipated debut solo album, I’ve Never Been Here Before, out February 23rd. As the latest preview, the rapper has shared the new single, “Shook Up,” featuring Joey Bada$$ and Farr.
The 16-track LP delves into deeply personal themes of Black resilience and fearlessness, soundtracked by intertwining sounds of hip-hop, soul, dub, and psych. Linden Jay, T-Minus, and James Blake served as producers, with Westside Boogie, George Clinton, Channel Tres, and Kimbra contributing features.
After years of collaboration, “Shook Up” is the first track to see Erick and Joey Bada$$ unite as a rap duo. In a press statement, Erick said, “I’ve always admired Joey’s ability to tell stories and he came to mind as soon as Linden and Romeo played me the demo of the record. Erick the Architect has moved 2,790 miles from New York City and landed in Los Angeles. As one third of legendary hip hop group Flatbush Zombies, Erick changed the soundscape of the genre as the trio’s rapper-producer — pushing the Zombies into bold new sounds and narratives that both confounded and inspired fans and cementing themselves as one of the most respected crews in hip hop.
While the tight-knit act has often been labeled as “psychedelic hip hop,” their music went beyond that narrative, and at times, explored the darkness of death and depression.

If Governors Ball is back, it must be summer in New York. The annual festival returned to Queens in early June in roomy new digs: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, just down the block from its 2021-22 home at Citi Field. The sprawling, tree-lined grounds were reminiscent of Gov Ball’s years on Randall’s Island, for anyone whose memories go back as far as the 2010s, only nicer and easier to get to by public transit. With one rainstorm aside, it was a beautiful weekend made all the more welcome...

There are few 2010s songs as iconic as Fun’s number-one hit “We Are Young” featuring Janelle Monáe. It introduced the world to both Fun — and most importantly, soon-to-be-world-renowned producer Jack Antonoff, who was a member of the band — as well as acclaimed singer and actress Monáe. “We Are Young” itself was much loved, going on to win the Grammy for Song of the Year with additional nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Released in September 2011, “We Are Young” was very much a product of its time. Its popularity was spurred by its feature on the popular TV show “Glee,” and it also was part of a new wave of indie pop hits that really ruled the year. Songs like Gotye and Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” Neon Trees’ “Everybody Talks,” Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time,” and Ellie Goulding’s “Lights...

Tei Shi has revealed her upcoming fourth EP, Bad Premonition, along with the project’s latest single “¿QUIÉN Te Manda?” and a string of headlining 2023 tour dates.
The Colombian-Canadian singer-songwriter’s new offering follows her 2020 EP, Die 4 Ur Love, and features production from Tei Shi herself, Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait, and more. The EP has already been previewed thus far by the Summer 2022 single “Grip” and what has now been confirmed to be the title track in October.
The latest reveal for Bad Premonition comes in the form of the bilingual banger, “¿QUIÉN Te Manda?,” which roughly translates to the expression, “Who told you to?” Over a prickly yet slick production, Tei Shi delights in taking a former flame to task while regaining her power and independence with lines like, “You put ur hands all over the wheel/ Now I’m taking it back...

The 2023 Grammy Awards are especially competitive in top categories this year. Record of the Year and Song of the Year seem especially tough to call, with Adele‘s “Easy on Me” and Harry Styles‘ “As It was” jockeying for top position in our current Gold Derby odds. Most prognosticators will choose one over the other in both categories — but is that the smart choice? How often do these categories see a split between two artists? And how often do they match up?
See Will the Grammys do something ‘Unholy’ for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance?
Since 2000, 12 artists have swept the two General Field categories: “Smooth” by Santana (2000), “Beautiful Day” by U2 (2001), “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones in 2003, “Not Ready to Make Nice” by The Chicks (2007), “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse (2008), “Need You Now” by Lady A (2011), “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele (2012), “Stay With My” by Sam Smith (2015), “Hello...

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have linked up with celebrated drummer Antonio Sánchez — who helmed the acclaimed percussion-heavy score for Birdman — for a new song, “I Think We’re Past That Now.”
Sánchez’s drumming guides the multi-faceted track, beginning at an off kilter lurch. rising to a monumental arena-rock boom, then settling into an energetic shuffle before one last explosion. Reznor provides lead vocals on the song (and wrote the lyrics), bellowing over Sánchez’s dynamic drums and the song’s bruising blend of industrial synths.

It isn’t often that a debut single goes on to become the biggest song of the year. Historically, it’s taken a swaggering, genre-squashing disruptor like Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” or something like Kesha’s “Tik Tok,” so hooky and energetic it might just cause withdrawal, for a track from a newbie to overthrow established stars. But can a slow-burning pop ballad about teenage heartbreak pull it off?
According to the numbers, “Drivers License” has a shot.

The Grammy for Album of the Year is one of the biggest honors for an artist. With past winners including trailblazing records like Adele’s “21,” U2’s “The Joshua Tree,” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” the award is a huge seal of approval from fellow musicians. This year eight albums are looking to join that prestigious list. Let’s take a look.
Taylor Swift is back with her eighth studio album, “Folklore.” It ended up being a departure from Swift’s more mainstream pop material into a more singer-songwriter, alt-pop vibe. Not only was it commercially successful, spending multiple weeks on top of the Billboard 200, but it became her most acclaimed piece of work, ending up with an 88 score on Metacritic and becoming a fixture on year-end lists. With all of this in mind, “Folklore” will likely be an easy win for Taylor. If so, this will be her third...

A political event hosted by “Broad City” star Ilana Glazer was canceled Thursday night after a Brooklyn synagogue was hit with anti-Semitic graffiti.
Glazer had planned to host a forum at Union Temple in the Prospect Heights area of Brooklyn in which she was to interview candidates in two tough Congressional races: Andrew Gournardes of South Brooklyn and Jim Gaughran of Long Island. It was also designed to connect volunteers to canvassing detail on behalf of various candidates on the weekend before the momentous Nov. 6 midterm elections.
The graffiti included hate speech written in black marker, according to Wcbs-tv New York, and included the phrase “Kill all Jews,” according to other local media reports. The decision was made by organizers and temple leaders to cancel the evening event out of safety concerns at a time of rising incidents of hate crimes and anti-Semitism in particular. In April, Kimbra released Primal Heart, a slick electronic pop album teeming with sharp hooks. She’s been tinkering with the results ever since.

I watch American Idol for one thing and one thing only, and that's the sight of arrogant young men crying near Ryan Seacrest. I basically got a Trainspotting-sized injection of that sweet fix during Thursday night's solo round show, because there were tears, sniffles, anxieties, and sobs galore. Some were crocodile tears, as the astute barrister Nicki Minaj noted, but every salty drop was nonetheless a spectacle of drama king camp. Mmmmm. My absolute favorite.
The judges pared down the list of competing dudes to 28, and these five contestants were my five top selections of the evening. Grab your hanky, wave it in the air, and then cry into it, because this quintet is one weepy bunch of winners. Miss America-style.
5. Charlie Askew, "Somebody That I Used to Know"
First of all, I'm pretty sure that "Charlie Askew" is the cabaret name of Fran Lebowitz, because I'm getting major Public Speaking vibes from this child.

After getting "pumped up" from L.A. obscurity to jamming with Maroon 5 on the Grammys, playing SNL, and touring the world in the last 18 months, Foster the People got kicked by their own roadies in Vegas on Saturday night.
Although we just celebrated July 4th, Ftp's last night on tour felt more like April Fools Day! Just as lead singer Mark Foster was about to kick off their marquee hit Pumped Up Kicks as the encore, his road crew piped Bruce Hornsby's old 1980’s sappy song The Way It Is throughout the venue, turning the encore in to virtual piano karaoke.

First "Bohemian Rhapsody," now this.
Two children used their commutes to belt out lyrics to Gotye's hit song "Somebody That I Used To Know." The pair are huge fans of the tune and they jumped at the opportunity to create -- and star in -- their very own music video.
Sure, the lyrics are presumably too mature for the tiny duo, but it certainly doesn't make the clip any less cute.
The video has been well-received on YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 48,000 times since it was first posted on May 3. In addition to complimenting the editing, user file83 even suggests the kids' version replace the original video.
In April, both Gotye and featured singer Kimbra appeared on "Saturday Night Live," where they delivered a toned-down version of the popular song.

The track record for athletes hosting Saturday Night Live is not excellent. Lorne Michaels has said that jocks make ideal hosts because they’re so accustomed to a live audience, but he’s just doing his job. The fact is, most athletes are not funny — maybe for the same reason that most supermodels aren’t: They don’t need to be. Groupies and fawning hanger-ons laugh enthusiastically no matter how lame the joke.
So give credit to Eli Manning, who went to great lengths on Saturday night to convey that he gets the joke about himself: Super Bowls do not equal electrifying charisma.
