Mario Van Peebles has set his latest film “The Price for Freedom,” which tells the story of civil rights pioneers and NAACP organizers Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, who were instrumental in advancing the cause for Black voters in Florida.
The Moores’ story is described as “equal parts civil rights history and a personal tale of love, commitment and family,” as it chronicles the activists’ fight for voting rights and the equalization of pay for Black teachers in Florida, as well as their battle against racial violence and lynching.
After opening 64 chapters of the NAACP in the state and registering hundreds of thousands of Black voters, the Moores were murdered on Dec. 25, 1951, when a bomb exploded directly under their bedroom at their home on the outskirts of Mims, Fla.

Paramount Global chair and National Amusements president Shari Redstone is one of the most powerful people in Hollywood. She is also an observant Jew and a supporter of Israel who has been reeling over the days since Oct. 7, when Hamas terrorists attacked the Jewish state, she told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday in a corner booth at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago. The Beverly Hills restaurant was closed to the public for the evening in order to host “Black & Jewish Conversations,” an event that Redstone and Gelila Assefa, Puck’s Ethiopia-born wife, began organizing well before the Hamas attack in order to foster increased conversation and partnership between members of Hollywood’s Black and Jewish communities.

Duane Davis, a former gang member known as Keffe D, was indicted on one count of murder with a deadly weapon by a Nevada grand jury Friday.
The victim: Tupac Shakur.
It’s a case that has made national headlines since 1996 when it took place and has been the subject of a multitude of documentaries and scripted projects.
Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes, one-time friend and one-time foe of Tupac’s, was the most high-profile recent series, having premiered in April. The series focuses on Tupac’s relationship with his mother Afeni, a Black Panther activist, rather than his death.
Hughes told Deadline that today was a “great day for the family.”
He revealed that when he was pitching the project around Hollywood, he had a different subtitle: This Is Not A Murder Investigation.
“[Dear Mama] was very matter of fact, very frank about what happened.

Singer Ed Sheeran Wins Copyright Lawsuit Over Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” Won’t Quit Performing
A jury decided Thursday that Ed Sheeran‘s 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud” did not steal from Marvin Gaye‘s “Let’s Get It On.”
After the verdict, Sheeran, 32, nodded his head in acknowledgment to the jurors and mouthed the words “Thank you.”
The ruling came after a two-week copyright infringement trial between the singer-songwriter and the estate of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the classic 70s song with Gaye.

Sheeran called the copyright allegations “insulting.” He and his co-writer Amy Wage testified that the chords the lawsuit was concerned about were a “common progression” used in several songs.
Outside the courthouse, Sheeran read an official statement to reporters. The singer said he missed his grandmother’s funeral in Ireland due to the trial and would “never get that time back.”

With Sheeran coming away victorious in the much-publicized “Thinking Out Loud”/ “Let’s Get It On” trial, music copyright experts tell Rolling Stone they’re hopeful the decision will chill what they describe as frivolous lawsuits going forward, as the verdict tells those looking to sue that winning out isn’t so simple.

The Ed Sheeran copyright infringement trial wrapped up testimony at the end of the court day, as the judge sent the Manhattan jury into deliberations with a pointed admonition: “Independent creation is a complete defense, no matter how similar that song is.”
U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton’s instructions may have left a high bar in the jury’s minds for just how much evidence the plaintiffs’ attorneys needed to have established to prove that Sheeran and his co-writer actually copied Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ when they wrote the pop hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’, reports ‘Variety’.
According to Insider, Stanton told jurors that the lawyers for the heirs of Gaye’s co-writer, Ed Townsend, needed to “prove by a preponderance of the evidence… that Sheeran actually copied and wrongfully copied ‘Let’s Get It On'” – as opposed to the coincidental, negligible similarities argued by Sheeran’s attorneys.

After acknowledging her “sisters” in the all-female Entertainer of the Year category, Bassett reflected on her past projects like What’s Love Got to Do with It and How Stella Got Her Groove Back and working with directors like Spike Lee and the late John Singleton. She mentioned her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever writer-director, Ryan Coogler, last, saying he “showed us that we are royalty and he built the crown for us all to wear.

Angela Bassett was the top winner at the NAACP Image Awards taking the trophy for Entertainer of the Year. The star had previously won this year for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for 9-1-1 and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which took the award for Outstanding Motion Picture.
One of the big surprises of the night was Will Smith winning the Outstanding Actor award for Emancipation. The actor was not in attendance and category presenter Janelle Monáe accepted the trophy on his behalf.
Brittney Griner appeared on stage with their wife and made a call to continue fighting for detainees overseas.
Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary continues to be a favorite winning Outstanding Comedy Series, Viola Davis took an award for Outstanding Actress in film for The Woman King and Nicco Annan won Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for P-Valley.

Brittney Griner and wife Cherelle made a surprise appearance at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards on Feb. 25. The whole crowd erupted into applause and rose to their feet as host Queen Latifah introduced the couple at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, saying, "In the spirit of overcoming adversity, I want to take this moment to recognize someone who has done just that. Back home, back here with us tonight, where she belongs." After taking the stage hand in hand while smiling from ear to ear, both Brittney and Cherelle addressed the audience and made a plea to fight for American detainees overseas.
"We are truly so thankful to all the people, many of whom are Black women and Black-led organizations, who fought so hard to bring Bg home tonight," Cherelle said. Brittney added, "It feels so good to be here, especially with my beautiful, amazing wife and with all of y'all here today.

Tyre Nichols was laid to rest Wednesday following a memorial service in Memphis, nearly one month after the 29-year-old died after being beaten by five police officers during a Jan. 7 traffic stop.
Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance at the funeral after being invited to speak at the last minute by the Rev. Al Sharpton. Harris denounced the actions of the police officers who beat Nichols and called on Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, saying that President Joe Biden would sign it into law.

When news broke on Saturday that the Memphis Police Department’s Scorpion Unit was disbanded, Amber Sherman, a community organizer in the city who has helped lead the demonstrations for Tyre Nichols, seemed unimpressed: “Yep. Now they need to answer all the demands.”

A handful of recent documentaries have got me thinking about biographies — their intentions, their function, their quality.
Loudmouth, a hagiographic portrait of the Rev. Al Sharpton, is one of them. Closing out the Tribeca Film Festival, the dutiful film charts the civil rights leader’s life from his early days as a teenage preacher up until his eulogy at George Floyd’s funeral in 2020. The film positions itself as a testament to Sharpton’s rousing oratory skills and a reminder of his fractious legacy. Sharpton — who today parties with self-satisfied liberals and hosts an MSNBC talk show — was not always respected. His no-holds-barred protest methods made him unpopular, abhorrent even, to many white Americans.

The documentary “Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power,” which charts efforts to organize disenfranchised Black voters in rural Alabama in 1965 in the wake of the Selma to Montgomery marches, bears tremendous resonance today.
Many fraught topics that have made headlines within the past two years — voter suppression, election fraud, police brutality, Black Lives Matter, gun control, to name a few — all seem like manifestations of issues more than a half-century old.
In 1965, Lowndes County, Alabama, was one of the poorest counties in the country. It had no registered Black voters despite an overall population that was 80 Black. Sharecropping had replaced slavery as a means to maintain the caste system, and cotton pickers had little hope of getting themselves out of debt. Registering to vote was unthinkable even after passage of the Voting Rights Act, as Blacks were routinely followed, intimidated, threatened or even killed if whites perceived them to be out of line.

A simple list of Ben Crump’s clients tells us how important his work as a civil rights attorney is: Between 2020-2021 alone, he represented the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Daunte Wright.
“Civil” began as a collaboration between Crump and Kenya Barris (“black-ish”), who considered working on a scripted series together. But as Crump puts it, Barris felt people would want to see “this real life superhero,” so they asked director Nadia Hallgren (“Becoming”) to make a documentary about Crump himself.
The result leaves us with the feeling that a combination of approaches might have worked best: a non-scripted series could have given Hallgren valuable opportunities to broaden the story, while still introducing viewers to her primary subject.
