Black Lives Matter co-founder Opal Tometi is experiencing a “full circle moment.”
“I had actually just watched the film ‘Fruitvale Station,’ when I first heard that George Zimmerman was being acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin,” Tometi tells Variety, recalling the birth of the movement. “Between watching the film and sitting in that moment with the reality that these types of tragedies are still happening, I was moved to action.”
“I quite literally went home that night, cried my eyes out, and the next morning called Alicia Garza [fellow co-founder of Black Lives Matter, along with Patrisse Cullors] and created our Facebook page, bought our domain, and started building out our social media platforms in order for us to start mobilizing more people,” she says. “So, for me, [that] film has been central to my own activism in that way.”
Today, Tometi serves as a co-ambassador for the Social Justice Now Film Festival alongside “Fruitvale Station” star Michael B. Jordan.

After prominently wearing specially made face masks at the U.S. Open, tennis player Naomi Osaka got a surprise thank you message for protesting police brutality and racial injustice at the Grand Slam event.
For each round of the competition so far, Osaka has worn different black face masks with the names of people who died as a result of racism or police brutality: Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin and George Floyd. And during a post-match interview Tuesday on ESPN, the parents of Martin and Arbery appeared in a video to thank Osaka for her support. Watch the video below.

On the night of Aug. 23, 1989, 16-year-old Yusuf Hawkins went with his East New York friends to the predominantly Italian-American neighborhood of Bensonhurst, responding to a used car sales ad. After being misidentified as the boyfriend of a local girl, Hawkins was attacked by an angry mob of young white men, and was eventually shot dead. His death sparked outrage, bringing simmering racial tensions to a boil, leading to an aftermath that engulfed the city as Hawkins’ family demanded justice. Directed by Muta’Ali Muhammad (“Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee”) the HBO documentary, “Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn,” relives that tragic night that exposed deep racial prejudices which continue to haunt the country today.
Ahead of the opening of Spike Lee’s incendiary ”Do the Right Thing” just a month prior on July 21, 1989, a few mostly white critics predicted that the film’s portrayal of racial divisions in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood might lead to riots.

Two days after a Minneapolis cop killed George Floyd in late May, the novel coronavirus tallied its 100,000th American victim. More than 22,000 of those lost were black, though we only make up 13 percent of the overall U.S. population. As the global pandemic was laying bare virtually all of America’s structural inequalities, unrest on the Minneapolis streets swelled into the largest and most numerous public demonstrations for civil rights seen in generations. Tens of thousands of nonviolent protesters from various cultural backgrounds, in city after city, are crying out “black lives matter,...

At the end of a recent appearance of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert asked his guest, Run the Jewels rapper Killer Mike, what white people could do to be better allies in what has become a serious moment of reckoning in our country. The artist’s answer: go watch the work of Jane Elliott, an educator who’s been conducting classroom experiments involving race, role play and the pain of exclusion since the Sixties. George Zimmerman, Who Killed Trayvon Martin, Sues Pete Buttigieg & Elizabeth Warren For $265 Million
George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin in 2012, is suing Democratic presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg for $265 million, claiming they defamed him in an attempt to “garner votes in the black community.” The lawsuit claims that Warren and Buttigieg’s tweets on February 5, which would have been Martin’s 25th birthday, […]

The month of February commemorates Black History Month, a time for our country to celebrate the hardships and hurdles the black community has overcome.
Yet, it also serves as a reminder that the fight for equality doesn't stop here, and there's no way 29 days could sufficiently pay homage to the numerous victories achieved.
Even with the abolition of slavery well over a century ago, the black community still fights for freedoms in all aspects of the law and society.
And unfortunately, our country has a history of turning a blind eye to its problematic past riddled with racism and oppression.
History provides important lessons and acts as a cautionary tale, so we may not repeat it, but it seems America hasn't learned that lesson to the fullest.

“On the Record,” a harrowing documentary about the burden of women of color in the #MeToo movement, has been upstaged for nearly a month by the departure of former executive producer Oprah Winfrey.
Winfrey, who had also guaranteed the film’s distribution through an overall streaming deal with Apple, was always meant to amplify an urgent conversation around intersectional silence-breakers and their search for justice and cultural reform. Her exit, over vague “inconsistencies” in accounts of rape and assault against mogul Russell Simmons, have had the opposite effect, his accusers said.
“What’s happening with this film and the difficult path it’s finding, even in the home stretch, to just see the light of day is sort of a meta example of what the whole conversation of the film is about,” Drew Dixon, a former music executive who accused Simmons of rape in 2017, told Variety at last week’s Sundance film festival.

L.A. Lakers forward Moe Wagner says he didn't intentionally "like" a pro-George Zimmerman tweet earlier this week ... and now he's apologizing to "anyone I hurt." The 22-year-old German-born NBA player came under fire when people noticed he "liked" a tweet that essentially justified Zimmerman's 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin. The tweet also said, "The black community [Zimmerman] had volunteered his time to help prior to the incident tried to ruin him." Yeah, it's bad. Zimmerman...

The amount of time that passes between a traumatic or otherwise subjective event and the way that event is recounted often greatly determines the response to and reception of those involved. In some cases, it may mean seeing someone who was once put on a pedestal as a much more complex and even criminal individual, while in others it allows for greater empathy toward someone previously thought of as a villain. And in some very special cases, revisiting a situation also allows for real social and systemic change.

In serving as executive producer of “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” Chachi Senior found himself revisiting many of the unbelievable moments that surrounded that case. None was worse than reviewing the trial of Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman. “What I learned most about the trial after watching this film as opposed to when it was actually happening, was just how wrong the prosecution had gotten this. They blew this case,” he tells us in our recent webchat with him (watch the exclusive video above). He’s quick to credit the movie’s directing team of Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason for the way they didn’t heighten their presentation of this in the documentary and just presented the facts of how the prosecution failed. Senior adds, “They were just idiots.”

Earlier this month, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted clemency to Cyntoia Brown, who was serving a 51-year sentence for felony murder. Fourteen years ago, a teenaged Brown was prosecuted in Tennessee for shooting and killing a 43-year-old man who had solicited the 16-year-old Brown for sex in 2004. She said the act was self defense — the real estate agent had showed her his gun collection, and when they were in bed together, he reached for something that she believed to be a firearm, so she pulled her gun out of her purse and struck first.

It’s been 32 years and 22 feature films since Spike Lee soared into independent filmmaking prominence with “She’s Gotta Have It” at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. And it’s been 28 years since he received his lone Oscar nomination for one of them — a screenplay bid for “Do the Right Thing.”
Many critics regard that Harlem-set blueprint-of-a-riot Lee’s masterpiece and the most famous of those critics, the late Roger Ebert, left the film’s Cannes premiere sobbing. He was still dabbing his eyes when he took his seat at the press conference immediately afterward, proclaiming to all within earshot, “If this doesn’t win the Palme d’Or, I’m never coming back here.”

Supergirl struggles with tone when the Children of Liberty try to carry out their version of Kristallnacht
This Supergirl review contains spoilers.
Supergirl Season 4 Episode 6
The trickiest part of this episode is that Supergirl’s tone is so buoyant that it’s all a bit too light to support the emotional heft of what transpires. Aliens homes are marked and roving bands of the Children of Liberty wander the streets to harass, attack, and intimidate them. It's not clear how far they would have gone without interference. It certainly seems like it was meant to be a sort of Kristallnacht for aliens, a turning point where suddenly persecution moves from social to physical.
But the lizard-turned-dragon makes it all a bit too quip-filled and goofy, and the big showdown of the episode is between two good guys. I wish Supergirl had the confidence to follow through with the story it outlined,...

Paramount Network is to be lauded for its recent documentary series “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story.” Jay Z produced this critically acclaimed in-depth exploration of the background and story of the murder that ignited the Black Lives Matter movement. Martin was just 17 when he was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch member in the Sanford, Florida community on February 26, 2012. He had been there with his father to visit a family friend. George Zimmerman was acquitted of a second-degree murder charge after claiming he shot Martin in self-defense.

There are few who will watch “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” who will come to the series completely unfamiliar with the individual at its center. From his 2012 shooting death to the emerging generation of activists and engaged citizens that arose from the 2013 verdict in George Zimmerman’s resultant murder trial, the name Trayvon Martin carries with it associations in different corners of the country. If Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason‘s six-part documentary series shows one thing definitively, it’s that Martin’s senseless killing has come to symbolize so much more about how America sees itself today and the elements of American life that remain unchanged after centuries of turmoil.

Private Investigator Dennis Warren has accused Zimmerman of stalking him and, according to court documents, claims that interviewees in the film “do not want him to know what they said about him or have any contact with him.”
Warren also believes that revealing the identities of those who participated in the documentary, including law-enforcement officers, “could put them at serious risk.” Zimmerman was charged with misdemeanor stalking after allegedly sending Warren 67 text messages and 27 emails over the course of nine days; he’s also said to have called 55 times and left 36 voicemails.

The long-awaited new album by Drake has arrived. “Scorpion” clocks in at 25 tracks, 12 on side A and 13 on side B, and features guest appearances by Jay-z (“Talk Up”), Static Major and Ty Dolla Sign (“After Dark”) and a previously unreleased vocal by Michael Jackson which leads the hook to the song “Don’t Matter to Me.”
Credited elsewhere on the album are Nicki Minaj, Future and Paul Anka, the 76-year-old crooner known for classics like “Puppy Love” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” and a longtime collaborator of Jackson’s.
The album also seems to confirm rumors that Drake has fathered a son, acknowledging his newborn child in the track “Emotionless” and “March 14,” in which he raps “kiss my son on the forehead.” Other references include lyrics about George Zimmerman and Malcolm X.
Within an hour of its release, “Scorpion” shot up to No. 1 on the iTunes chart and on Apple Music.

Snapchat is seeking more media partners. Advertisers feel they’re under siege as TV viewing migrates to ad-free platforms. Celebrity endorsement deals remain an art, not a science. Engagement is the metric of the future, but brand “passion” is the Holy Grail for content providers.
There are among the key takeaways from the industry leaders and experts who gathered Friday at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York for Variety’s annual Ent & Tech summit. The conference examines the intersection of media and entertainment with the new platforms and technologies that are redefining the content business.
Here are 10 highlights from the daylong event:
Joe Marchese, president of advertising for Fox Networks Group, drew comparisons between the modern media marketplace and cryptocurrency. Consumers’ attention is the coin of the realm, which lends itself to all sorts of potential problems from fraud to stuffing too many commercials into TV shows — even fake news.

Seeing their teenage son Trayvon Martin gunned down in 2012 by George Zimmerman — a Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who claimed self-defense and later was acquitted of all charges related to Martin’s death — Tracey Martin and Sybrina Fulton did what anyone in such a tragic situation might do. They grieved, and they sought to process their experience.
Writing their own book, Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin, the pair were able to retain a sense of authorship over their son’s story and their own, telling the full truth and nothing but the truth. “I think we, as parents, felt it was very important to get our story out to the public on how we view the entire situation, how we raised our child—our livelihoods, our lifestyle,” the elder Martin told Deadline today. “I think it was important that not only we told Trayvon’s life, so we can uphold his legacy,...

When it went into development, I was worried about what Death Wish would be in 2017. The Charles Bronson films came out of a time when people feared the faceless criminal and felt the police couldn’t help them. Today we have mass shootings by disgruntled men and George Zimmerman standing his ground, so a vigilante story is even more complicated than it already is in principle. I didn’t think Eli Roth would do Death Wish just to make a Bruce Willis shoot ‘em up, and I was right. However I can appreciate a good remake of Death Wish, I am...read more...

Zimmerman was acquitted on a second-degree murder charge after claiming he shot Martin in self-defense, sparking protests and outrage worldwide. The series delves deep into the heart of the story which is more than a tragic narrative about a young man’s life cut short – it’s a story about race, politics, power, money, and the criminal justice system.

The only good vigilante is a fictional vigilante and The Punisher is one of the best examples.
America loves revenge stories and Netflix serves up a cold dish of it with Marvel's The Punisher. The Punisher, like Batman, Spider-Man, the Green Hornet and so many other comic book heroes, is based on a mythical creature: The do-gooding, well-intentioned lone vigilante: Brave men, women and occasionally children and animals, who take the law into their own hands when society fails them.
The Punisher is a damaged version of that trope. Well-trained and filled with vengeance, he is a one-man posse who you can easily picture riding shotgun in Travis Bickle’s yellow cab in Taxi Driver. Although, he may prefer to prowl the subways with Bernie Goetz.
