Michaela DePrince (born Mabinty Bangura) is a Sierra Leonean-American ballet dancer, who, with her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, authored a bio titled "Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina," published last fall. Known as girl Number 27 at the orphanage where she was abandoned at a young age and tormented as a “devil child” for a skin condition that makes her skin appear spotted, Michaela would become inspired by a photo of a beautiful ballerina that would help change the course of her life. At the age of four, she was adopted by an American family, who encouraged her love of dancing and enrolled her in classes. She went on to study at the Jacqueline Kennedy...

Michaela DePrince proudly declares herself a 'poppy among the daffodils', as Precious Adams reveals she was advised by a teacher to lighten her skin
One of the most extraordinary stories told in Bess Kargman's 2011 documentary First Position is of Michaela DePrince, the young girl horrifically orphaned by the civil war in Sierra Leone, who was inspired to become a ballerina after seeing a photograph of a dancer in an old torn magazine.
After DePrince was rescued from Sierra Leone, her adoptive American family willed her on to fulfill her ambition. Kargman's documentary only tracks DePrince to the point where she wins a prize to attend the American Ballet Theatre School: but since then she has embarked on a full professional career, first with Dance Theatre of Harlem, and then with Dutch National Ballet.

I seem to have been watching ballet documentaries for most of my life and this one presents a familiar line-up of young dancers, their demanding teachers, pushy parents and professional obstacles. A superior example of the genre, it concentrates on six young dancers from around the world, preparing for the Youth America Grand Prix, held annually in New York for boys and girls aged 8 to 19. Because the director has chosen well, most of them go off with a statuette, award, scholarship or actual job. Particularly memorable is Michaela DePrince, a 14-year-old orphan whose father was murdered by gunmen during the civil war in Sierra Leone; her mother starved to death. She was adopted by an American couple and plans to return to west Africa to start her own ballet school.

Some may wonder why I would be interested in watching a documentary on ballet dancing, especially when I have the rhythmic abilities of a broken rotary fan. That is a legitimate question that deserves an answer. Personally I feel a big purpose of movies is having an opportunity to expose ourselves to things we would otherwise never experience. Plus a sign of a good filmmaker is the ability to take an isolating subject and present it in an interesting way.
First Position succeeds at accomplishing just that.
The film follows a variety of dancers that are getting prepared for the Youth America Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious ballet competitions in the world. Dancers from the ages of 9 to 19 look to use the Grand Pix to launch their careers as ballet dancers.

Chicago – The delicate sensibility in the documentary “First Position” would probably had not existed if first-time filmmaker Beth Kargman had not wanted to see the movie herself. As a former ballet dancer, she wanted to go behind the performance for portraits of young dancers as dedicated artists.
“First Position” follows six different competitors in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix, which focuses on ballet dancers ages 9-19. There are situations that are expected – the intensity of a parent who accommodates and sacrifices, the instructor taskmaster in the studio and the hours of obsessive rehearsal. But when the individual kids are spotlighted, a new truth emerges. Life has a different path for these talents, and each journey has an artistic interpretation within it.

Chicago – In general, one of the essential rites of passage for girls in childhood are ballet lessons and costumed recitals. What about those exceptional talents who stick with the art? Director Bess Kargman creates a documentary about the elite youth within the beauty and truth of the dance, “First Position.”

The title refers to the stance that every new ballet student learns, and in Kargman’s document, symbolizes the career beginnings of the cream of the youth crop. No matter what your opinion or connection to the art form is, this film enhances the appreciation of the hard work and dedication that these children endure. There are several surprises, with both the expected stereotypes and outside-the-box participants. Everything is beautiful at the ballet.
