Plenty of films satirize Hollywood, dating back to 1950’s Sunset Boulevard and beyond, but few are as giddily gruesome as The Substance. The film stars Demi Moore as an actress who’s been deemed past her prime and pushed out of Hollywood, so she signs up for a regimen that promises to make a younger version of her (played by Margaret Qualley). Every year, there are outstanding performances that horror fans have come to accept probably won’t get the awards recognition they deserve due to their genre. Obviously, there are notable exceptions; but for every Kathy Bates in “Misery,” there’s Toni Collette in “Hereditary.”
It’s unfortunate that horror isn’t held in higher esteem, as it’s genuinely one of the hardest to get right. It’s a tricky balance, and it can easily go awry. One false move and your over-the-top turns will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. This year, in particular, has been great not only for genre films but also for the actors in them. In a just world, here are some of this year’s actors who would be recognized by Oscar voters.
Hugh Grant, “Heretic”
Perhaps the strongest shot at breaking into the race, the always reliable Grant is perfectly cast as Mr.

Actress Margaret Qualley has signed on to play the leading role in the new Gothic horror film “Victorian Psycho.” The psychological thriller is based on an upcoming novel of the same name being published in early 2025. It will reunite Qualley with director Zachary Wigon, who she previously worked with on the acclaimed drama “Sanctuary.”
Set in 1858 England, the story follows Winifred Notty, a young governess hired to teach the children at the isolated Ensor House. As Notty adjusts to her new role, staff at the estate begin mysteriously disappearing. This raises suspicions about Notty’s character among the property’s owners.
The screenplay was written by Virginia Feito, the author of the source novel. In the film, Qualley will portray the eccentric and disturbed Notty. Speaking about the project, Qualley said she is excited to collaborate again with Wigon and explore the “twisted world” of the story. Wigon expressed enthusiasm...

Forget the American Psycho remake discourse, it's time to focus on what really matters: Margaret Qualley starring in another movie from Sanctuary director Zachary Wigon and playing a psychopath who gets a job as a governess at a gothic manor in 1858.
Deadline announces that the upcoming horror-thriller movie will see Qualley playing the lead character, an eccentric young woman named Winifred Notty, who has "psychopathic tendencies." Winifred is tasked with tending to the homeowner's children and their education on their family's history. But when staff members start disappearing, the owners realize that something might be very wrong with their newest hire. The plot sounds a little like a reverse Turn of the Screw.
Regarding working with Wigon again after Sanctuary, Qualley says, "Working with Zach [Wigon] again feels like a rare gift, and I can’t wait to step into this twisted world he’s created.”

The Substance Box Office (North America): 6th Weekend Update(Photo Credit – YouTube)
It is the season for small-budget movies—Terrifier 3, Smile 2, It Ends With Us, and The Substance. They all have overperformed at the box office. Demi Moore’s satirical body horror film still held its ground at the US box office even on its sixth weekend. Scroll below for the latest box office update.
It is Mubi’s biggest box office success to date. The reported budget of the movie is $17.5 million. From The Graham Norton Show to Drew Barrymore’s talk show, Moore was all over promoting the film, and it paid off.

Coralie Fargeat’s gruesome body horror satire on ageing, poised for a Halloween streaming release, is a welcome female take on a genre that preys on our deepest fears
The surprise success of Terrifier 3 in cinemas this month – with stories of underage viewers buying tickets to family fare and sneaking into the low-budget gorefest instead – underlines a constant in the mutable horror genre: people will never lose their morbid fascination with the worst possible things that can happen to our bodies. Or the worst impossible things, which is where body horror cinema comes in: the terror of our natural anatomical order becoming, well, unnaturally disordered.

Streaming giant Mubi has announced that it will release The Substance, the latest film from Coralie Fargeat, on 31 October 2024 – just in time for Halloween. A provocative exploration of the beauty industry and its impacts on women’s self-image, The Substance stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid, delivering an electrifying blend of horror, satire, and social commentary. The release date and the newly revealed trailer have already generated excitement, promising audiences a horror film that cuts deep into modern anxieties around appearance and worth.
The Substance centres around Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore in a role that critics have called one of her best. Sparkle, a former A-list TV fitness host, is ousted from her show by an exploitative studio head, Harvey (Dennis Quaid). Facing an uncertain future, she encounters The Substance, a mysterious drug offering a path back to her youth – if only for one week at a time.

The honor of the bloodiest, most disturbing, and funniest body horror movie of the year easily goes to "The Substance," writer/director Coralie Fargeat's satirical fairy tale that cuts right to the heart (almost literally) of the unfair beauty standards that society places on women. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley as Elisabeth and Sue, respectively, the movie takes its body-swapping narrative as far as it can possibly go -- and then some -- and delivers what has gone down as 2024's most macabre and provocative theatrical experience. In his review, /Film's Chris Evangelista praised the chaos on display for taking "the biggest possible swings, with unforgettable results. There's an audacity to 'The Substance' that's downright infectious — you cannot help but embrace a film willing to go to these extremes." Now, after cutting a bloody path through theaters everywhere, "The Substance" is gearing up for viewers to...

Seven years have gone by since director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link. Now Fargeat is back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). The movie received a theatrical release last month (you can read our 9/10 review Here), and now it has been announced that The Substance will be available to stream exclusively on Mubi as of October 31st. No tricks – just a Halloween treat…
The film is gory, but also humorous, and it’s quite a wild ride. Here’s the official synopsis: It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And there’s only one rule: You share time. One week for you.

It seems like everyone’s talking about (and unfortunately sharing social media Gif spoilers from) The Substance, Coralie Fargeat’s body-swapping, body-horror masterpiece starring Demi Moore as a fading celebrity who injects herself with a cell-replicating green substance that quite literally makes her give birth to a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley).
With its shades of David Cronenberg and Stuart Gordon, The Substance firmly catapults Fargeat (Revenge) into the realm of mad genius, and distributor Mubi has managed to scare up $34 million at the worldwide box office thanks largely to the incredibly positive word-of-mouth. Granted, this movie should be making way more money than that, but I digress.
If you’ve been dying to experience The Substance but haven’t been able to get out to your local theater, the good news is that Fargeat’s new movie is coming home for Halloween!
In fact, The Substance heads home On Halloween.

The Substance (2024) is a satirical body horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Coralie Fargeat. The story centers on Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a fading celebrity who is fired from her TV show for being deemed too old. Desperate to regain her youth and career, she turns to a mysterious black market drug known as The Substance, which has the ability to create a younger version of herself named Sue (Margaret Qualley).
The program comes with strict rules: Elisabeth and Sue must alternate every seven days, sharing the same consciousness. As they navigate this bizarre arrangement, unexpected and grotesque side effects begin to unravel their lives. The film blends dark humor and body horror, drawing comparisons to Cronenberg’s work, with stellar performances from the cast. Some view it as a grotesque fever dream that explores themes of identity, obsession with youth, and the price of vanity. Set in both urban and isolated locations,...

Rob Lowe is teasing that there is still plenty of fuel for the “St. Elmo’s Fire” sequel.
The actor said during SiriusXM’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa” that the full cast of the original 1985 film are confirmed to reprise their respective roles, and that “The Substance” Oscar contender Demi Moore has especially been instrumental to the revival.
The feature, which was originally directed by late filmmaker Joel Schumacher and co-written by Carl Kurlander, also stars Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell, and Mare Winningham. MacDowell’s daughter Margaret Qualley co-led “The Substance” with Moore.
A possible sequel to “St. Elmo’s Fire” was announced in June 2024 after the release of McCarthy’s documentary “Brats” which revisited the era of the Brat Pack actors.

Even if you haven't seen Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s recently-released body horror satire, The Substance, there's a good chance you'll have heard that it's one of the most extreme, gruesome, and disturbing movie to hit theaters in quite some time.
The film - particularly the last 30 minutes or so - contains some truly surreal and repulsive moments, and there have been a number of reports of cinemagoers walking out before the end, and even some vomiting in the aisles.
The story focuses on an acclaimed actress turned celebrity host of a daytime exercise program (Demi Moore) who gets replaced by a younger star, sparking a confrontation between the two women that ultimately turns violent.
That's the basic outline. If you want the very gory details, spoilers will follow.

It’s time to update your Golden Globe predictions at Gold Derby, because a major contender has just announced its awards strategy for the upcoming 2025 kudos. “The Substance” and its lead actress Demi Moore will compete in the Comedy/Musical categories, per our sister site The Hollywood Reporter. Previously, awards pundits assumed Mubi’s body horror flick would enter in the Drama races, but the satirical nature of the project convinced the campaigners — after a “debate even within the film’s and Moore’s camps” — to try their luck elsewhere.
This news comes on the heels of the November 4 submission deadline for the 2025 Golden Globes. THR’s Scott Feinberg previously unveiled the campaign strategies for many of the other films that could be seen as straddling the line between Drama and Comedy/Musical.

The 60-year-old is also known for his unconventional personal life, producing five marriages that reflect his whirlwind romances and fast-paced lifestyle.
Most recently, Cage has enjoyed three years of love with his wife, Riko Shibata. The pair rarely step out in public. However, they made a special exception for the Newport Beach Film Festival, where the Longlegs star received special honors with the Icon Award.

The marriage of popular music and subversive cinema is hardly new. Whether it's peppy musical numbers in "After the Thin Man," the music of Miles Davis in "Elevator to the Gallows," or the needle drops in many of the films of Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, the combination of catchy melodies and infections rhythms with harrowing drama and the onset of violence has been a cinematic peanut butter and jelly for a long time now, almost as long as the dawn of movies themselves. Yet something very intriguing has been happening in American culture ever since the turn of the century. Where cinema has taken advantage of its malleability of genre and tone to explore the well-rounded totality of the human condition, pop music has undergone a curious shift.

Now that we know "Call Me By Your Name" and "Challengers" director Luca Guadagnino is making his own version of "American Psycho" — one that's based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel, not the 2000 movie helmed by writer-director Mary Harron — the world is waiting to see who Guadagnino and his team choose to play this generation's Patrick Bateman. I'm eminently unqualified to make this decision — for one thing, I'm not a casting director, and also, nobody asked me — but I definitely have ideas.
Here's one: Guadagnino could gender-flip the role and cast Zendaya, his "Challengers" lead who proved, throughout the tennis drama, that she can definitely play an apex predator. If she's not available, Margaret Qualley could probably make a meal out of the role. If we're sticking with guys, there are some great options who have simply aged out of the role; Robert Pattinson and Penn Badgley could both bring something quite excellent to Patrick,...

Being perhaps a candidate for film of the year, ‘The Substance’ (2024) is a recently released body horror film starring Demi Moore and is the second film of Coralie Fargeat. Like other entries in the genre, the film has a good deal of shock value and unnerving sequences that are in perfect tune for this Halloween season. However, ‘The Substance’ transcends this genre as it is not merely a modern attempt at a Cronenberg style body deconstruction, but a compelling look into the struggles of aging actresses and the idea of a double identity. All have been previously seen in cinema, but it is with this film that all are combined to create an experience that is as distressing as it is disturbing. One that is certainly worth checking out in anticipation for awards season. Things to do: Subscribe to The Hollywood Insider’s YouTube Channel, by clicking here. Limited Time...

Working Title Films co-chair Eric Fellner has admitted he didn’t understand just how “full-on” body horror The Substance was going to be.
The industry giant spoke with fellow chair Tim Bevan at a BFI London Film Festival event on Tuesday, where they were probed on the highlights and failures of their careers, as well as the vast success of “cultural Britishness” with films like Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, Love Actually and Darkest Hour among their impressive slate of productions.
Most recently, Working Title Films made The Substance with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, which has racked up an impressive global box office total of over $24 million. “[Coralie Fargeat’s] script was really, really good,” Fellner said, explaining that after seeing Revenge (2017) he traveled to Paris “a few times for lunch” with the French filmmaker to persuade her to choose Working Title for her next film.

“The Substance” is the new ‘satirical’ body horror feature, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, following a ‘fading celebrity’ who uses a black market drug to create a much younger version of herself, now playing in theaters:
“…on her 50th birthday, ‘Elisabeth Sparkle’, a once-celebrated, now-faded Hollywood movie star, is unceremoniously dismissed from the long-running aerobics TV show she hosted, with producer ‘Harvey’ citing her advanced age as the reason.
“While driving home, Elisabeth is distracted by a billboard featuring herself being taken down, causing an accident. During a hospital check-up, a nurse slips her a flash drive advertising ‘The Substance’, a serum that generates a ‘younger, more beautiful, more perfect’ counterpart.

Most moviegoers can’t remember the last time they saw silly, campy fun on the big screen. That’s because not nearly enough of them saw Bottoms.
“Camp” in comedy is hard to define scientifically, and it’s mostly understood through examples. For instance, The Rocky Horror Picture show is considered the quintessential camp flick for its over-the-top performances, garish aesthetic and the inherent silliness of its excess. But, hey, nobody saw that movie in theaters either. In fact, it’s kind of an unspoken rule that campy comedy films can’t make a single dollar at the box office, a standard that the literal camp comedy classic Wet Hot American Summer staunchly upheld upon its release in 2001.
However, and though many of these camp comedies failed to achieve mainstream popularity, they succeeded in influencing the next generation of filmmakers who would carry on the tradition of unashamed, unrestrained playfulness,...

Critics are calling Demi Moore‘s turn in “The Substance” a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. Easy, right?
The satirical horror film was written, directed and co-produced by Coralie Fargeat, and is now Mubi’s biggest box office hit ever, grossing over $10 million stateside and nearly $20 million worldwide. IndieWire calls it “An instant horror classic.
