Guy Ritchie & Jason Statham's Underrated Spy Thriller Finds New Success on Streaming Despite Bombing in Theaters
Image
Independently, Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham are widely successful. Statham and Richie debuted with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and had several successful collaborations, but their latest one wasn't a hit when it came out.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre didn't receive positive reviews from the critics and didn't sell enough tickets to make a profit. However, like many other films, the spy thriller found a new life on streaming. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre just premiered on Peacock, and two days later, it's already in the Top 10, per Collider.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre premiered on Peacock on Apr. 28, and two days later, it's already making a splash. The spy thriller debuted in ninth place on Apr. 29 and climbed up to sixth place on Apr. 30.

Jason Statham’s ‘Operation Fortune’ is a Streaming Hit on Starz
Image
Jason Statham has done a violent dance movie villains on land, sea, and occasionally even in the air, but in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, he relies a little more on some witty banter than straight-up bruiser tactics to deal with his adversaries. The British tough guy leads Guy Ritchie’s action caper, which sees him teaming up with Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Josh Hartnett, and a movie-stealing Hugh Grant in full Trump-tan, and pulls out a performance that audiences loved when the film was originally released in 2023.

The film operates in familiar territory for anyone who has followed Statham’s roles in his spy-orientated mode. This time around, he stars as Orson Fortune, a covert operative whose skill set and deadpan snark make comparisons to a certain British super spy inevitable, even if he likes to get a little more down and dirty than any 007 ever did. However, while Bond movies play things straight,...

Jason Statham & Guy Ritchie's Last Movie Together Was A $49M Flop & It's Really Underrated
Image
Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham have made several movies together, beginning their professional partnership way back in 1998 with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. From there, the pair have worked together several times on movies that often have very similar styles and themes: theyre dark, gritty thrillers where Statham brings his signature stoicism to Guy Ritchies consistently witty scripts. But their most recent collaboration, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, didnt quite receive the acclaim that it deserved. It may not be Guy Ritchies best movie, but it comes close to the rest of his filmography in several ways.

Statham is best-known for his all-out action roles in franchises like Fast & Furious or The Expendables, so its always a pleasant surprise when Ritchie gives him an opportunity to tone it down somewhat in his standalone movies. His latest project was a perfect example of this, but it still failed both critically and commercially.

Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre Review
Cary Elwes, Hugh Grant, Josh Hartnett, Jason Statham, Bugzy Malone, and Aubrey Plaza in Agente Fortune: El Gran Engaño (2023)
And so we conclude the thrilling story of Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre, Guy Ritchie’s return to stylish spy capers with reliable main man, Jason Statham in tow. A sharp, witty and colourful actioner about a top secret agent trying to foil a billion dollar weapons sale between an arms dealer and a set of dastardly Ukrainian Mercenaries. Which would have released last year had Russia not invaded the Ukraine and the country’s population subsequently revealed themselves to be proud defenders of their homeland, holding the line against a vastly better equipped foe. Suddenly casting them as the villains in anything would feel grossly distasteful as well as at-odds with the reality of their national character. So Operation Fortune got shelved for a year, then quietly shunted onto Amazon Prime today.

Finally watching the film is a bizarre experience, the Ukrainian villains, like everything in the film,...

‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’ Movie Review: Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham, Superb Entertainment
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is an action thriller movie directed by Guy Ritchie, starring Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Hugh Grant.

Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham became famous worldwide with a movie and years later they are back with another story. This time around, it’s not at all like the one about half-baked gangsters as in the first, but it does have the same spirit that brought them success: quality action cinema, creating excellently directed pure entertainment, with pace, irony and an elaborate sense of rhythm and editing.

An action movie of quality.

Movie Review

A film with quality, it’s nostalgic, it has an unbalanced sense of balance, it’s somewhat over-the-top action in a spy thriller full of puns that knows at all times how to tease the viewer through the pace, with what is expected of Statham as an undisputed action cinema icon, and with...

Image
The following contains spoilers for Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.Guy Ritchie's latest spy comedy, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, sends super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) on a risky mission to retrieve a mysterious object called 'the Handle,' the definition of which is a secret throughout the film. Davies (Bugzy Malone). In competition with Orson's rival Mike (Peter Ferdinando), the team races to get their hands on 'the Handle' before it can be sold for $10 million by eccentric billionaire Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant).

Operation Fortune Breaks A Key Spy Movie Rule (But It Totally Works)
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Operation Fortune! The 2023 spy movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre breaks a critical rule for its genre, but makes up for it with its many action gags. From The Gentlemen director Guy Ritchie, Operation Fortune stars Jason Statham as snarky spy Orson Fortune, who is reluctantly teamed up with tech genius Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza), weapons expert JJ Davies (Bugzy Malone), and Hollywood movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to intercept a $10 billion sale by billionaire arms dealer Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). As the spy team works to foil the dangerous deal, far more hilarity than genuine action ensues.

The Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham collaboration utilizes plenty of spy movie clichés, such as car chase scenes, obvious bugs, a helicopter escape, a fancy party scene, and an unexpected secret double agent when it’s revealed that Mike is working rogue. However, Operation Fortune...

Image
Guy Ritchie is in the director's chair again, this time to apply his penchant for gangster movies to a spy comedy in Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. Now in U.S. theaters and set to debut on Amazon Prime U.K. in April, Operation Fortune brings together an ensemble cast for its globe-trotting adventure, including Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Hugh Grant, and Josh Hartnett.

In Operation Fortune, a deadly top-secret weapon known only as "The Handle" is stolen, leading Nathan Jasmine (Cary Elwes) to recruit a team of spies including Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) and Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza) to track it down. With the nefarious Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant) planning to sell The Handle at a charity event in Cannes, France, the team devises a novel strategy of blackmailing Hollywood star Danny Francesco (Josh Harnett) into helping them retrieve the weapon.

Operation Fortune's Post-Credits Scene Explained
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Operation Fortune!Guy Ritchie’s spy comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre features a humorous post-credits scene that follows up on characters after the chaotic heist. Operation Fortune follows spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) as his British intelligence boss Nathan (Cary Elwes) sends him on a mission with tech genius Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza) and young recruit JJ Davies (Bugzy Malone) to intercept the dangerous sale of the mysterious “Handle” by billionaire Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Not Even Aubrey Plaza Can Save ‘Operation Fortune,’ Guy Ritchie’s Weak Stab at Bond
Image
Quick question: Have you seen The Man From U.N.C.L.E.?

We don’t mean the popular TV show of the 1960s, in which Robert Vaughn and David McCallum surfed the era’s espionage-a-go-go wave and brought big Bond-style adventure to the little screen every week. We’re talking about the 2015 movie that wanted to replicate the series’ vintage spy-vs.-spy mojo, pairing Henry “Dude Cocks His Arms Like Shotguns!” Cavill and another gent whose name currently escapes us as a next-gen Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, respectively.

Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre Review: A Mildly Diverting Spy Mystery from Guy Ritchie
Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
Guy Ritchie’s trajectory from distinctive pop-auteur to journeyman director-for-hire has been fascinating to witness. Making his name in the late ‘nineties’90s with Anglicized Tarantino-isms of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, he remains largely synonymous with twisty crime capers because of the sheer scale of their international breakouts, even as his filmography has veered more towards studio franchise blockbusters in years since. Placed together, the recent work in his catalog suggests a filmmaker following the classic “one for them, one for me” formula, following up an anonymous live-action take on Aladdin with an attempted return to former glories via The Gentlemen––two exhausted cash-ins of ’90s nostalgia in different keys. The public perception of what a Guy Ritchie movie is and their current reality couldn’t be more different. With the noted exception of 2021’s far-better-than-expected Wrath of Man, they are largely witless, narratively convoluted affairs with...

‘Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre’ Review: Jason Statham Vs Hugh Grant In Guy Ritchie’s Stylish And Fun Spy Caper
Image
When a movie gets tangled up in all kinds of financial problems, delayed for over a year, played out internationally, sent straight to streaming in Canada, and then finally getting the green light to open in the U.S. via a new distributor and thrown into theaters with virtually no notice or time to mount a marketing campaign, you have to think there must be something very wrong here.

Well surprise, surprise. The awkwardly titled Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre is loads of fun, an entertaining spy thriller that is faithful to the genre, very well cast, and a hoot to watch. Caught up in the STX mess and then handled by Miramax and a distribution service deal for Lionsgate, the film has been played out in much of the world but is finally being released stateside in a theatrical run that has been so rushed it sadly may not...

Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
‘Operation Fortune’ Review: Guy Ritchie’s Long-Delayed Action Comedy Misses the Mark
Guy Ritchie at an event for RocknRolla (2008)
When it comes to the genre playgrounds he loves so much, is Guy Ritchie better off being himself or playing along? His brash, bad-lad calling cards were never terribly original, but their style-to-burn derivativeness had spirit. His Hollywood larks never felt honest but the occasional glimpse of a bruiser’s cockiness made for colorful upgrades in the IP machinery.

After Ritchie’s return to leaner (but never in the dialogue) roots with the comically shaggy, seedy gangster wingding “The Gentlemen,” and reteaming with his best contribution to cinema — Jason Statham — for the brackish vengeance puddle “Wrath of Man,” the British filmmaker is once again aiming for sleek and starry heights with the spy-driven action comedy “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.”

Statham is the “Fortune” of the title, first name Orson, an elite for-hire operative with clever ideas and expensive tastes, hired by intelligence agency rep Nathan (Cary Elwes) to determine...

‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre’ Review: Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza in Guy Ritchie’s Tired Action Comedy
Image
It’s pretty easy to tell that Guy Ritchie’s new action comedy has been sitting on the shelf for a while. After all, its villains include Ukrainian gangsters. Not that there aren’t still gangsters in Ukraine, but let’s just say the timing isn’t ideal.

The film’s title provides a hint of its dumbness. Sure, the use of a French phrase is impressive. But the “Fortune” in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre doesn’t refer to the name of the mission, but rather the leading character, a mercenary secret agent named Orson Fortune, played by Jason Statham. It could have been worse. If he were still playing his character from Crank, the film would have been called Operation Chev Chelios.

If this seems like a digression, it’s because there’s not a lot to say about this effort for which the word “derivative” must have been invented.

‘Operation Fortune’ Review: Aubrey Plaza Kicks Ass in a Throwback Guy Ritchie Thriller
Image
From awards shows to heist thrillers, there’s nothing that can’t be improved by a little Aubrey Plaza. Though Guy Ritchie’s latest crime comedy may feel ten years behind the ball, his casting of Plaza as a badass operative proves he’s not completely out of touch.

Bearing the clunky title “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” Ritchie had no trouble assembling an impressive A-list ensemble for the action-packed caper — mostly of the British variety. As the ever-reliable Jason Statham and Hugh Grant go head to head, . If she can keep an operation this overstuffed afloat, there’s nothing she cannot do.

“Operation Fortune” boasts a grab bag of familiar elements that don’t entirely cohere, including a cranky leading man and a movie star playing a movie star bit that doesn’t quite land. The plot revolves around a reluctant free agent named Orson Fortune (Statham), who is...

Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre Review: A Stylish, Sunny Spy Flick From Guy Ritchie
Image
The most prominent thing I noticed about "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre," the latest from Guy Ritchie, is how bright it all is. Movies have become so increasingly underlit and dark that the sunny brightness of "Operation Fortune" is almost startling. In fact, the movie might be too bright — the sun seems to always be shining no matter where the characters are. And when the scene happens to be taking place at night, we can actually see what's happening on the screen. It's a movie miracle! Whatever flaws are inherent to "Operation Fortune" (I'm not using that full title over and over again — sorry), Ritchie, cinematographer Alan Stewart, and the rest of the filmmaking team deserve kudos for remembering to light the damn movie.

Lighting aside, "Operation Fortune" has had a bumpy road to the screen. The pic was originally supposed to bow in January 2022, then got bumped to March...

‘Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre’ Review: Guy Ritchie Hits a Home Run in a Spy Thriller Starring Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza and Hugh Grant
Image
For 25 years, I have never been much of a Guy Ritchie fan. I found the in-your-face-and-over-the-top crime dramas that made his reputation — “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Snatch,” “Revolver,” and “RocknRolla” — to be empty-flashy exercises in the too-muchness of genre kinetics, overly infatuated with their post-Tarantino cutthroat cool. It was clear that Ritchie had talent, but the way just about every shot in his movies was designed to remind you of that turned the films into layer cakes that were more frosting than cake. After a while, he dropped the badass glitz and settled into a more conventional career, and some of those movies were okay. I confess that I enjoyed his remake of “Swept Away”, and he had fun applying what was left of his high-froth Add style to the Robert Downey Jr. “Sherlock Holmes” franchise. Yet I could never escape the feeling that Guy Ritchie had...

Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre Review - Ritchie's Latest Is Charmless & Stale
Image
Since his feature debut, Guy Ritchie has had a film released every two-three years. He has crafted a rather formidable reputation for his filmmaking style and rouges gallery of male actors. Regardless of the critical response or tepid box office, there is always a place on the release calendar for a Guy Ritchie joint. So, it was no surprise that he has yet another picture, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, starring Jason Statham, this time playing a spy tasked with recovering something very dangerous with a ragtag team. However, the film wasn’t released when it was slated to, and the studio remained quiet on the reason why. Now that Operation Fortune is upon us, the answer to whether it was worth it is somewhat underwhelming.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre follows super-spy Orson Fortune (Statham), who has been tasked with retrieving a stolen device called The Handle. Not much...

Jason Statham's Long-Delayed Spy Thriller Finally Gets Release Date
Image
Jason Statham's long-delayed spy thriller, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, has finally received a U.S. release date. Directed by acclaimed British director Guy Ritchie, the film has faced a series of setbacks leading up to its American theatrical premiere. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre was originally scheduled to be released on January 21, 2022 before being pushed to March of that year, and then eventually removed from the release schedule altogether due to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War out of a desire to adjust the film's depiction of Ukrainian villains.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre has finally received a domestic release date, as announced by Lionsgate and Miramax.

The Statham-led action-comedy will now hit American theaters on March 3. The news came with a new Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre trailer, which can be seen up above.

Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre, Which Stars Jason Statham As A Guy Named Orson Fortune, Is Getting A Theatrical Release After All
Image
Hey, remember that big Guy Ritchie movie starring Jason Statham that was supposed to be released sometime in 2022, then it just sort of disappeared off the face of the planet? Well, now you do, because "Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre" is now on track to release very, very soon.

Lionsgate announced that the Ritchie film will bow in theaters on March 3 after already being released in several countries back in January. In a press release, the company announced that it had acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film from STX Entertainment, which shuttered its film distribution department in November 2022. This deal may have coincided with the one Lionsgate recently announced for another one of Ritchie's upcoming films, "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," as they too will distribute that movie in the United States.

Anyways, let's get to the important stuff, and that is refreshing your memory as to what...

Image
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the action comedy film Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre was filmed in 2021 and boasts a cast that includes Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, and Josh Hartnett. And getting U.S. distribution for this film is proving to be unexpectedly difficult. Tired of waiting for the U.S. side of things to get worked out, international distributors have gone ahead and released Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre to theatres in some countries this week, with the premiere taking place in Dubai last night.

Operation Fortune was originally supposed to receive a theatrical release from STX Entertainment in January of last year. But it was delayed while STX merged with Eros International plc., and was later bought out by Najafi Companies – after Lionsgate considered buying the company, but then dropped out of the running. Lionsgate had also considered releasing Operation Fortune in U.

‘Operation Fortune’ Trailer: Guy Ritchie Reunites with Jason Statham in Globetrotting Spy Movie
Image
It’s been 23 years since director Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham kicked off their working relationship with “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” (1998), which co-starred the latter. Statham gradually evolved into the mold of yesteryear’s action antiheroes, relying on quick fists, feet, a precise trigger finger, and wisecracks to tussle his way through snappy projects, a few directed by Ritchie. After “Lock, Stock” came “Snatch” (2000), “Revolver” (2005), and, earlier this year, the pair reunited for the stylish revenge-thriller “Wrath of Man” (2021), which was a modest success. The partnership continues to bear fruit with a fifth collaboration on the way titled “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” an action comedy from STXfilms.

“Operation Fortune” stars steely Statham as Orson Fortune (Ritchie always had a flair for giddy character names), a super spy with a singular set of skills who is tasked with tracking down a stolen piece of technology. He’s trying...

Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie Reunite for Five Eyes Action Spy Thriller
Image
Having launched their careers together with the crime comedy caper Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels way back in 1998, director Guy Ritchie and action superstar Jason Statham are teaming up again for the spy thriller, Five Eyes. The project is being developed under Miramax, with principal photography set to commence in Europe in October.

Five Eyes finds Jason Statham in typical gruff-talking, action hero territory as the character Orson Fortune, an MI6 guns-and-steel agent who is "recruited by global intelligence alliance Five Eyes to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order.

Reluctantly paired with CIA high-tech expert Sarah Fidel, Fortune sets off on a globe-trotting mission where he will have to use all of his charm, ingenuity and stealth to track down and infiltrate billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds." The movie sounds like the perfect combination of odd-couple banter and explosive,...
