In 1979, Fleetwood Mac released Tusk, an experimental album that was a stark departure from Rumours. The album was not as commercially successful as its predecessor and, while critics liked it, they didn’t think it stacked up to the band’s 1977 magnum opus. Still, it drew some comparisons to The Beatles. Some critics didn’t use the comparison as a compliment, though.
Critics compared a ‘Fleetwood Mac’ album to The Beatles
The stormy dynamic that hung heavy over the Rumours recording sessions followed Fleetwood Mac into the studio as they worked on Tusk. Lindsey Buckingham seized creative control and his bandmate’s songs didn’t fit all that snugly into his vision. As a result, the album sounded like a mismatched collection of songs instead of a cohesive whole. This quality, some critics said, evoked The Beatles’ White Album.

Over the decades, a diverse array of musicians sat in with the Grateful Dead — everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to Ornette Coleman and Daryl Hall and John Oates found themselves on the same stage with the band, attempting to fit in as best they could. But even in light of that list, Clarence Clemons remains one of their more surprising jam pals.

Jerry Garcia stayed extremely busy in the fall of 1993. The Grateful Dead spent much of September playing multi-night stands at Boston Garden, New York’s Madison Square Garden, and the Spectrum in Philadelphia, and a little over a month later the guitarist was back in some of the same rooms with his eponymous side band. A gem from that lengthy arena trek, which turned out to be the Jerry Garcia Band’s final East Coast tour, is unearthed in the new live set GarciaLive Volume 11, November 11th, 1993, Providence Civic Center,...

“Anthem of the Sun was our vehicle,” Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart said of the band’s 1968 LP. “It was our springboard into weirdness.”
The Dead’s 1967 self-titled debut introduced the world to a band striking an exuberant midpoint between roots, blues and psychedelic rock, but the album didn’t quite capture what set them apart from the start: their thrilling live show. Anthem of the Sun came much closer. Overlaying studio recordings with flashes of uncut inspiration drawn from various gigs, the established lineup of Phil Lesh, Jerry Garcia,...

A fateful day is re-examined by its survivors, whose stories are told via a brilliant narrative arrangement, and the use of animated recreations is only one aspect of it. The Texas tower shootings put our present, everyday reign of violent terror in a humanist context. It’s not exploitative — the killer’s name is barely mentioned. It works, it’s riveting, and its positive message is one of calm sanity. Highly recommended.

Quick question. This is 2014 right? You wouldn’t guess that from watching Varsity Blood!
It would seem that the trend for producing horror movies that harken back to the 80s and the golden age of the slasher, has officially become the “norm” for modern examples of the genre. Every month there seems to be another slasher movie that hits DVD and/or VOD which looks and feels like the self-referential post-Scream years never happened. But I’m not complaining, oh no! As a Huge fan of slasher movies (even the likes of Iced and Terror at Tenkiller) I relish the opportunity to watch each and every new entry into the much-maligned genre.
Thankfully the quality of modern slashers has,...

We’re back with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes a trailer and release details for Sledge, Cam2Cam, and Night Guards, a review of Hungerford, plus more below:
Sledge Trailer and Release Date Announced: “He didn’t drown. He didn’t burn. He’s just a psychopath with a sledgehammer.
Sledge, a ‘bloody’ good horror-comedy in the tradition of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead, premieres on VOD September 2nd and DVD on October 7th.
A spoof of the horror genre, and littered with nods and references to fright flicks of yesteryear, the film fixes on a psychopath who not only believes he’s in a movie and video game but that he’s the hero of this story.
“Sledge is a horror comedy that takes a loving poke to the horror classics we...

Coming out next Tuesday on DVD via Rlj / Image Entertainment is a new film called Varsity Blood. In preparation for the release, a team got together to reenact a scene using puppets. Poor felt.
Synopsis
This football season, Hogeye High’s Warriors and cheerleaders are out for blood. Unfortunately, someone is out for theirs, and they’ll be forced to take one for the team. After the big Halloween football match, the students are joined by an uninvited guest dressed as their high school mascot armed with a bow and arrow, a battle-axe, and an insatiable appetite for butchery. Soon, they find themselves fighting for more than the winning score as terror becomes the name of the game. Featuring “enough inventive kills to keep even the most rabid gorehound happy,” Varsity Blood is “a supremely entertaining slasher rollercoaster” (Hysteria Lives!).
Varsity Blood is directed and written by Jake Helgren (Finding Mr. Wright,...

Jake Helgren's first feature as director is the indie title Varsity Blood. The film is a slasher feature, which focuses on a group of friends and an isolated farmhouse. Helgren's feature will release through Rlj Entertainment, this summer (August 19th, 2014) and a trailer for the film is available here. The story is fairly straightforward. Several friends begin to party on the outskirts of town. The local mascot shows up, axe in hand and this group of friends is now on the chopping block. The trailer for Varsity Blood shows the homicidal mascot. Dressed in full regalia, the Native American mascot lays waste to several high-schoolers. The bloodspray is plentiful and fans of horror can view the clip below. Release Date: August 19, 2014 (DVD). Director/writer: Jake Helgren. Cast: Lexi Giovagnoli, Wesley Scott, Debbie Rochon, Natalie Peyton, Blair Jackson, Elyse Bigler, Melody Herron, Jesse Ferraro, Kiarra Hogan, Chris Hlozek, Payton Wood and Manuel Chapa.

Writer/director Jake Helgren has revealed three stills from his new slasher horror project 'Varsity Blood'. It's the classic tale of bullish jocks and hot cheerleaders doing all they can to survive a rampaging mystery murderer. The flick is in post and stars Lexi Giovagnoli ('Bloody Homecoming'), Wesley Scott, Debbie Rochon ('Bikini Bloodbath Car Wash'), Blair Jackson, Elyse Bigler, Natalie Peyton, Melody Herron, Jesse Ferraro, Kiarra Hogan, Payton Wood and the gorgeous Elle Lamont -below ('Machete Kills'). No word yet on a planned release or in what format but our guess would be around Halloween time and likely a direct to DVD offering. Check out the new pics below....
