The 7 best movies streaming on Disney+ right now
Image
Even if the Marvel multiverse isn’t your thing, Disney+ has plenty of sequels, throwbacks, and feel-good hits worth streaming right now.

Disney+ isn’t just for Marvel diehards — which is good news, because I’ve never really been one. The whole superhero multiverse thing? Not really my speed. But even if you’re not lining up for every new Avengers drop, Disney+ still has a lot going for it right now. We’re talking big-screen sequels, throwback favorites, inspiring true stories, and one delightfully chaotic R-rated team-up that feels like it snuck in through a side door.

Whether you’re in the mood for something animated, emotional, or just flat-out fun, there’s something worth watching this week. So, here are my top 7 movies streaming on Disney+ right now.

Top 7 movies streaming on Disney+ right now:

No. 7: ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’

No. 6: ‘Moana 2’

No. 5: ‘Young Woman and the Sea’

Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto Secret Debunked: This Badass Naruto Character Was Inspired From WWE Legend Hulk Hogan
Image
Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto has some of the most entertaining characters in anime. Kishimoto-san drew inspiration from several myths, celebrities, and pop culture figures to create his characters, giving them a lot of personality. Among these characters, Killer Bee stands out as a fan favorite due to his raps and wrestling-inspired combat.

While everyone loves Bee, few know that his creation may have been influenced by the WWE legend, Hulk Hogan. Hints from Kishimoto, such as Bee’s combat style, point to this inspiration, drawing a connection between Naruto’s rapper ninja and the wrestling legend.

Naruto’s Killer Bee is a badass, ya fool Killer Bee before facing Taka | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Killer Bee of the Hidden Cloud village is one of the few people in Naruto known as the Jinchuriki, people with creatures known as the Tailed Beasts sealed inside them. Bee, in particular, was the host of the Eight Tails.

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Takes Pride As No. 9 Most Valuable Blockbuster Of 2024
Image
Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as we gather the best data possible...

'Mufasa' Cast and Crew Reveal the Movies on Their Shelf Next to 'The Lion King' Prequel [Exclusive]
Image
What do The Fox and the Hound, Fantasia, and The Manchurian Candidate all have in common? They're all movies the cast and crew of Mufasa: The Lion King would place next to the Disney prequel's physical release on their shelves. Barry Jenkins's box-office-busting photorealistic animated musical drama is coming to store shelves on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 1, and to celebrate, Collider can share an exclusive video with the stars involved talking through what films deserve to sit with their creation. Whether for sentimental reasons, a Disney connection, or because they prefer to be neat and alphabetized, each person featured has a different answer for how they're displaying the new release with the movies they own.

The video opens with one of the film's two stars, Kelvin Harrison Jr., who plays Taka/Scar. Considering Mufasa is all about brothers, he thinks The Fox and the Hound...

Mufasa: The Lion King Worldwide Box Office: Trails Behind The Lion King By Almost 57%, Despite Being A Financial Success
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King Worldwide Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Mufasa: The Lion King, released in the cinemas last year, was a significant box office success. It worried people when Mufasa opened with low numbers at the US box office. Despite a weak plot, it showed the power of family movies and great visuals. It is suffering at the box office now because of its digital streaming, and as it prepares to bid goodbye at the cinemas, let’s take a quick look at how much the movie is trailing behind its blockbuster predecessor, The Lion King.

The Lion King was released in 2019, and it is a photorealistically animated remake of the traditionally animated 1994 film. It was a huge box office success and is also one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. It was directed by Jon Favreau featuring the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor,...

‘The Studio,’ ‘Mid-Century Modern,’ ‘Mufasa,’ and the best of what’s streaming this weekend
Image
Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of award-worthy pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts. (March 28 - March 30)

The main stream: The Studio

It’s not cinema, it's TV.

Created by Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg alongside Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez, The Studio takes viewers behind the scenes of an embattled movie studio after a reshuffling of power puts Rogen's Matt Remick, a cinephile with the best intentions, at the top of the mountain. The 10 episode series — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — reveals how the proverbial sausage is (or is not) made and how the quest for great art is complicated by money and ego in a uniquely funny series that should appeal to everyone regardless of their familiarity with the so-called "industry."

In addition to Rogen,...

Even when paired against the speedsters of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December, Mufasa: The Lion King legged out an impressive showing at the box office with $254.1 million domestically and $719.7 million worldwide. Director Barry Jenkins’ Lion King prequel was also powered by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s catchy soundtrack, and by the charismatic vocal performances from the cast.

Braelyn Rankins and Theo Somolu lent their voices to the young versions of Mufasa and Taka in the film, and they also performed on the movie’s breakout song, “I Always Wanted a Brother.” To celebrate the prequel now streaming on Disney+, the two actors reunited on Zoom to talk about performing their unexpected hit, how they finally got to work together at the same time, and which version of The Lion King reigns supreme in their hearts. 'Mufasa: The Lion King' Set to Stream on Disney+ Starting Late March
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King opened over the holiday season of 2024 and, unlike most movies lately, played it out in theaters to generate some legs before being sent to PVOD. It was good that Disney stuck to a longer theatrical window because even though the trades questioned its opening weekend start, the film found an audience and took it to box office heights that the Mouse House could be proud of. Now that its box-office run is wrapping up, Mufasa's next journey is upon us, and it involves a new streaming home for audiences who happened to miss it during the holidays.

Per People Magazine, Mufasa: The Lion King will hit Disney+ on Mar. 26, a few days over 3 months since the movie hit theaters on Dec. 20. The performance of the film has been exceptional, even over the weekend when it placed 8th place on the box office chart with a...

Image
There's good news for fans of Disney's The Lion King franchise. The latest photorealistic movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, will arrive on Disney+ March 26.

Both a prequel and sequel to 2019's The Lion King, the Mufasa movie stars Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Mufasa and Taka, respectively. It tells the story of a young orphaned lion cub (Mufasa) who grows up to become the king of the Pride Lands and father of Simba. The film also explores the origins of The Lion King's original villain, Scar, who is revealed to be the young lion prince and adoptive brother of Mufasa, Taka.

Mufasa: The Lion King's story takes place after Simba becomes King of the Pride Lands at the end of 2019's The Lion King film, with him and Nala having a daughter named Kiara. Simba asks his beloved sidekicks Timon and Pumbaa to watch over his daughter,...

Mufasa: The Lion King roars onto Disney+ later this month
Image
The Circle of Life continues as Mufasa: The Lion King goes from digital VOD to an eventual physical release Blu-ray, but it will soon be streaming on Disney+. Our Chris Bumbray found the family film to be quite an enjoyable watch as he said in his review, “I might have even slightly preferred it to the 2019 Lion King, as at least it tells a marginally different story and doesn’t rely on nostalgia for a much better film to entertain its audience – even if I can’t help but think Jenkins was capable of delivering a much better film than this were he given the chance.” Variety now reports that Mufasa: The Lion King will start streaming on Disney+ starting March 26.

This streaming date precedes the home video release. Mufasa: The Lion King was recently reported to make its way onto 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 1. Here...

Disney teases new update after 'Lion King' sequel
Image
Disney's Lion King franchise has seen something of a revival era since the tail end of 2024, and it continues to remind Disney fans just what an impact it had on audiences 30 years ago. However, the storyline doesn't end with Simba and Nala.

Mufasa: The Lion King was a different take on the traditional Disney live-action remake. While it didn't triumph over Sonic and Shadow, it did do something different from other remakes that came before: It told an original story, and people noticed.

From Milele to Disney+

While original reviews were something of a mixed bag, the reception for Mufasa was generally positive, and Disney isn't finished with the royal felines yet. Tons of talent was packed into this project, and it certainly had more than a few stand-out moments.

While we can't speak for everyone's experience, this writer can't go a full day without hearing Taka's lines from...

“The idea was to express this angst”: ‘Castlevania: Nocturne’ Couldn’t Keep Alucard’s Original Theme to Overcome the Need of a Prequel
Image
Netflix’s Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne take elements from the game series and weave a new story with them that doesn’t necessarily stick to the source material. With all its merits, the show and its sequel have found their audience, as it introduced the world of Castlevania to them.

The gamers already acquainted with the characters and the world are equally, if not more intrigued with the show. One particular aspect that was completely new to even them was the soundtrack composed by Trevor Morris and Trey Toy. The first season of Castlevania was largely focused on Alucard, and the music was a background addition to the overall experience.

We Already Know What the Next ‘Castlevania’ Project Is Going to Be Because of the Only Consistent Character of the Franchise
Image
Netflix’s Castlevania introduced a completely new band of fans to the vibrant characters of the video game franchise. Alucard has always been the poster boy of Castlevania and every season of the show brings forth a new aspect of the character. The only time the focus shifts from him is in Castlevania: Nocturne. Even then, it’s just a matter of time before he joins the cast again.

The pattern so far highlights the priorities and focus of the Netflix series. It’s not difficult to predict what the future projects of the series might look like, and part of the reason also lies in the creative liberties the show has taken so far.

‘Castlevania’ Creators Have the Perfect Opportunity to Give Fans More of Alucard With a Prequel to ‘Nocturne’
Image
The Netflix adaptation of the video game franchise, Castlevania, has been a surprising success. It attracts old fans and new ones alike with its gorgeous visuals and enticing characters. Most agree that the characters are even more fleshed out than their game counterparts.

One such person who has caught every fan’s interest is Adrian “Alucard” Țepeș. The half-vampire, half-human offspring of Dracula has been a fan favorite of the Castlevania franchise for decades, but the Netflix version has converted the anime community.

Sam and Adam Deats have made some significant and subtle changes to Alucard’s character. He’s younger, canonically bisexual, and struggles with his vampire heritage more openly. He’s tragic and relatable rather than a stoic dhampir.

Alucard’s potential love interest in Castlevania wasn’t Maria Renard, surprisingly, but Greta, the leader of Danesti village. Fans are more inclined towards Greta since Maria was only 16 years old.

Netflix’s Castlevania is one of the most successful video game turned anime adaptations. From an intriguing plot to thoughtful development of characters, the series has its basic right to attract a huge amount of audience. “The scene didn’t traumatise just Alucard but the whole fanbase”: The Worst Characters Dethroned Dracula and Carmilla as ‘Castlevania’s’ True Villains
Image
The Netflix anime adaptation of Castlevania isn’t exactly known for sunshine and roses. The moral ambiguity of the characters and the scenes riddled with gore and eroticism leave little to the imagination.

While Dracula might be the main antagonist of the overall series, other characters might deserve the title even more. In Alucard’s storyline in Castlevania, two characters stand out to fans in the “most hated” category.

Sumi and Taka reached out to Alucard to learn how to hunt vampires and seemingly became close friends with him. The lonely protagonist finally had a genuine smile on his face. However, this all changed in one night.

Castlevania was already graphic but the scenes in Season 3 pushed the boundaries even further, especially after witnessing what the duo did. Sumi and Taka committed one of the most heinous and uncomfortable acts to watch,...

Mufasa Becomes Only The 10th Movie To Reach This 2024 Box Office Milestone
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King is continuing to roar its way to success. The latest Lion King movie has thrived in a slow January, competing against a small field consisting of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and several other new releases. Wolf Man and One of Them Days were poised to top the box office over the holiday weekend. Even with Martin Luther King Day offering a chance for a booming box office, it has been a slow week. Still, despite only a trickle at the box office, Disney's lions are thriving.

According to a report by Variety, the Lion King prequel is expected to end the weekend with $209.8 million domestically and $588.4 million worldwide. With that total, it has officially become the 10th 2024 movie to reach the $200 million milestone domestically. It sits ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which earned $196 million, and just behind Sonic 3's $218 million total.

Mufasa Argues One Of The Lion King’s Core Beliefs Is A Lie & It’s Right
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King challenges the franchise’s core belief about the Circle of Life, creating an interesting contrast to the idyllic narrative of The Lion King. While the 1994 movie presents this philosophy as a guiding truth, symbolizing balance and interconnectedness in the animal kingdom, the prequel reveals cracks in this ideal. Talking back to the longstanding The Lion King plot point that never made sense, the movie responds to the question of why the animals of the Pride Lands serve their predator, but the answer isn’t all good.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s ending, though claiming Mufasa earned his title by protecting Milele, actually demonstrates the dark reality of the Circle of Life. The events leading to Simba’s father being crowned king of the Pride Lands explore the thin line between survival and power, underscoring The Lion King’s emphasis on nature’s balance. While Mufasa: The Lion King...

Image
Alucard has been one of the main protagonists in Netflix’s Castlevania. The son of Dracula, who has lived his entire life trying to defeat his father, has spent centuries in his pursuit of justice. Throughout the several seasons of the show, Alucard’s character has been developed like no other.

On his lonely journey, he met Trevor and Sypha, the two people who he could trust with his life. While he was not as welcoming towards them in the beginning, it quickly became clear that he had finally received the company he had been craving for.

Mufasa: The Lion King Has An Odd Plot Hole Thanks To Mufasa’s New Power
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King introduces an intriguing new ability for the titular character, accidently creating an odd plot hole. While the prequel does a pretty good job of enriching the story of how Mufasa became king of the Pride Lands, not all parts of his arc align easily with The Lion King’s canon. As his enhanced senses add to his heroic image, building him up to be more skilled than most lions, they also unintentionally complicate the logic of some key emotional beats in his journey.

Mufasa: The Lion King’s ending explains a major detail about Simba’s father’s strained relationship with Scar. However, the prequel’s changes to his character, while working in favor of Mufasa’s larger-than-life reputation, undermine his weakest moments, making them feel forced rather than central to his transformation. While these inconsistencies may not diminish Mufasa: The Lion King’s positive reviews,...

Mufasa's Box Office Makes Another Live-Action The Lion King Movie Very Likely
Image
The impressive recent box office performance of Mufasa: The Lion King sets Disney up for a live-action Lion King sequel in the near future. Directed by Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King not only follows the origin story of Mufasa, Simba's father, but also Scar, Mufasa's brother who ran astray. Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) leads the cast of Mufasa: The Lion King alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and Thandiwe Newton.

While Mufasa: The Lion King didn't make nearly as much at the worldwide box office as its 2019 predecessor, it was still one of the highest-grossing blockbusters of 2024. 2019's The Lion King directed by Jon Favreau remains one of the highest-grossing movies of all time with its whopping $1.662 billion box office total. Remarkably, The Lion King wasn't even the top-performing film of that historic year at the box office (Avengers: Endgame...

We’re Grateful for One Disney Masterpiece Escaping the Worst Hollywood Trend That Ruined The Lion King

Disney has been on a roll of remaking their older classics. Be it Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, The Jungle Book, or most famously The Lion King. With multiple prequels, sequels, live-action, and different animated versions, The Lion King has become one of Disney’s most profitable franchises.

So, it is no wonder that they keep reprising the same content over and over. However, for many, multiple variations of the same story time and again has completely dissolved whatever charm the movie held initially.

However, there is one Disney movie that touched the hearts of fans across the globe yet somehow managed to skip this trend for the most part. That is, Big Hero 6, and the fans couldn’t be happier about it.

“Mufasa viewers… this is all your fault”: Another The Lion King Live-Action Spinoff Is Reportedly Coming, Highlights a Disturbing 2024 Trend
Image
The Lion King is one of the most cherished franchises, and it all began with a groundbreaking debut in 1994. The very first movie follows the beats of Shakespeare’s Hamlet but features animals in a wild setting, a creative choice that did wonders for the film.

The Lion King | Disney

We still remember the iconic songs, villains, and our brave protagonist because the movies have become a pop culture staple. So Disney left no time to expand its media empire with Broadway shows, animated series, and even video games. Still, the continuous live-action movies might be a little too ambitious, and somewhat uncreative.

Quick Links Mufasa: The Lion King Shows Rafiki's Loss and Agony Mufasa: The Lion King Confirms Rafiki Lost a Soulmate

The following contains spoilers for Mufasa: The Lion King, now in theaters.

There's no question The Lion King is still one of Disney's most beloved properties. Mufasa: The Lion King is the number one movie, and adds more nuance to the story of Simba's father. The movie also explores how he came to look after the Pride Lands. Like his son Simba, Mufasa's storyline centers around loss, duty and destiny.

These selfless lions must protect their entire region, growing from hopeful, innocent cubs into wise leaders. However, the franchise's most moving origin story doesn't belong to either of these signature heroes -- it belongs to Rafiki for the burden he shouldered.

Mufasa Joins Three 2024 Disney Movies With Global Box Office Milestone
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King has hit a major box office milestone, joining three other 2024 Disney movies. The photorealistic CG-animated prequel follows the origin story of Simba's father Mufasa, and his dynamic with his jealous adoptive brother Taka, later known as Scar. The Mufasa: The Lion King release kicked off the weekend before Christmas with a lukewarm debut that saw it hit No. 2 on the domestic chart behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, it has had slow and steady growth that allowed it to eventually hit No. 1 during its third weekend.

Per Deadline, as of the Saturday morning of its fourth weekend in theaters, Mufasa: The Lion King has officially crossed the $500 million milestone worldwide. This makes it the fourth Disney release of 2024 to hit that mark, after Moana 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Inside Out 2. Mufasa is currently the ninth highest-grossing movie of 2024 worldwide, leaving Sonic the Hedgehog in the dust at No.

The Lion King 2 Is Trending (For Obvious Reasons) - But This Is Actually The Lion King Movie You Should Watch
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King has caused a surge in popularity for the franchise, but there is a forgotten movie from the franchise that fans need to see. The first Lion King movie was released in 1994. This hit animated film from Disney was a part of a significant resurgence for the brand after an extended slow period for their animated movies. And of course, while Disney continued to invest in new animated projects, they also expanded their popular stories like The Lion King.

This led to a sequel being made in 1998 which jumped ahead and explored what life was like for Simba as the head of his own pride. But then, the timeline gets more complicated when another sequel arrives in 2004, which is simultaneously a prequel, and a sidequel. Beyond that, there were video games and TV shows that further expanded the Lion King universe, until the live-action remake of the...

Mufasa: The Lion King Handled Taka's Scar Origin So Much Better Than Another Disney Movie
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Mufasa: The Lion King!

Mufasa: The Lion King finally answers the question of how Taka got his scar, and while this isn't the first time a Disney movie has tackled a similar origin story, this film did it the best by far. Ever since The Lion King was released, the mystery of how Scar got his scar has been raging, with their being no official answer. Luckily, Mufasa: The Lion King finally reveals the story behind this, with this explanation being much better handled than a similar story from Captain Marvel.

Much like Mufasa: The Lion King, Captain Marvel was tasked with explaining how a character got a scar on their eye. However, instead of being a villainous lion, it was Nick Fury. Nick Fury had become famous for wearing his eyepatch ever since he made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but after a decade of movies,...

Why Taka Saved Mufasa After Betraying Him In Mufasa: The Lion King
Image
Warning: this article contains spoilers for Mufasa: The Lion KingAs one of Disney's most recent films, Mufasa: The Lion King is still finding its place in the pantheon of the company's storied history, telling the story of the titular king and his brother Scar before they became bitter enemies during the original The Lion King. Mufasa's reviews are as divisive as the 2019 film's, though praise has been given to the prequel for its originality, as opposed to the shot-for-shot remake of The Lion King. However, the characters in Mufasa are undoubtedly the most interesting part, and showcase brand-new dimensions of the classic characters Mufasa and Scar.

One of the most interesting parts of the movie was when Scar saved Mufasa from Mufasa's main villain, the outsider lion Kiros, after he had already betrayed his brother to those same lions. The main point of the film was to showcase the backstory of Mufasa and Scar,...

Mufasa's New Special Powers Complicate The Circumstances Of His Lion King Death
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Mufasa: The Lion King!

Mufasa: The Lion King gives the titular king an all-new special power, but this ability completely complicates the circumstances of Mufasa's The Lion King death. One of the most well-known things about Mufasa is that he dies in The Lion King, with the character's death being considered one of the saddest moments in animation history. However, the story of Mufasa: The Lion King completely recontextualizes the circumstances of Mufasa's death, raising a lot of questions about the logic of how Scar's killing of Mufasa actually managed to work.

Mufasa: The Lion King finally tells the story of Mufasa's origins, with the film following him on his journey to become the king of the Pride Lands. The film reveals that, as a cub, Mufasa was taken in by the family of Scar, who was then known as Taka. Mufasa: The Lion King...

Mufasa: The Lion King provides a lot of new context on the world of The Lion King, although the prequel film does leave out one iconic location that is still mysterious after 30 years. The Pride Lands and beyond are explored throughout Mufasa: The Lion King, with the film explaining how they tie into the backstories of Mufasa, Scar, and the rest of The Lion King cast. However, while Mufasa: The Lion King does shine a new light on many of the franchise's iconic locations, there is one place where the light does not touch.
