CAA China has teamed up with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society to unveil a joint initiative that will foster Chinese-language genre film projects.
The Hgc initiative will operate an open call for projects from Monday until the end of October. Five successful projects will be selected and presented at next year’s FilMart rights market and Haf project matching event.
As part of the program, “CAA China will fund $20,000 cash awards to each of two handpicked projects to support their development, with customized guidance from mentors.” CAA China may also choose to board the winning projects later by entering into script development agreements.
“We are witnessing the rise of a new generation of Chinese filmmakers who are the backbone of Chinese cinema,” said Mary Gu, CEO of CAA China. “By collaborating with Hkiff Society, our aim is to discover and support young filmmakers with industry awareness and mainstream expression.

“Born to Fly,” an action movie about the prowess of the Chinese air force and the bravery of its aviators, topped the China box office chart over a weekend that led into the nearly week-long May Day holiday.
Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway shows the film earned $44 million (RMB279 million) between Friday and Sunday.
The weekend as a whole brought in $121 million of turnstile revenue, the fourth highest weekend of the year and weaker only than the three “revenge spending” weekends that drove the Chinese New Year period in January and early February.
“Born to Fly” was followed by “Godspeed,” a comedy road trip title about a father-daughter relationship and the need for inter-generational understanding.
While critics and supporters had described “Born to Fly” as China’s response to “Top Gun,” Chinese state media openly likened “Godspeed” to another U.S. title, “Meet the Parents.” Directed by Yi Xiaoxing who...

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising of ten countries in Southeast Asia, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam. Evidently, the movie industry of these countries does not yet reach the size of Japan, India and S. Korea for example, so we decided to include them in one list, although we still retain a hope that in the next years, we will see a cinematic boom from there also. Evidently, the Philippines are at least a step ahead of the rest of the Asean countries in that regard, which is the reason so many films from the country are included in the list, but particularly in 2020, both Malaysia and Indonesia have taken step forward, with a number of exciting productions. Also of note is that this list includes a number of shorts, from directors we feel will draw attention...

The 19th edition of the Lincoln Center’s New York Asian Film Festival will be virtual this year, and will go from August 28 to September 12, 2020. This year’s focus is on women filmmakers, under the title “Women Transforming Film.” In this year’s line-up, Nyaff spotlights titles directed and led by women — including “Heavy Craving”, “Lucky Chan-sil”, “Kim Ji-young, Born 1982,”, “My Prince Edward”, and “Victim(s)”.
A generous share of the program is devoted to new filmmakers, including striking directorial debuts and sophomore efforts. This edition reflects today’s particularly kinetic innovations, much informed by social media and the hyper information highway. An impressive cross-section of work highlights new ideas in storytelling and tackles social mores and personal demons, including “John Denver Trending”, “Beauty Water”, “Detention”, and “IWeirDo”, to name a few. Work by first and second-time directors...

The First International Film Festival this week announced that it will occur with in-person screenings from July 26 to August 3 in China’s Qinghai province — implying that cinemas will be open in at least parts of the country by the end of the month.
This would make it among the first festivals in the world to occur since the novel coronavirus, and one of few that has not had to cancel or change its originally planned dates. First follows at least two other in-person events: Taiwan’s Taipei Film Festival (June 25 to July 11) and France’s Fid Marseille (July 7-13).
China’s showcase Shanghai Intl. Film Festival was postponed from its original June time slot. It is believed to be looking for a late July revival, but those plans have not been made public.
First’s official selection of 13 feature films, eight documentaries and 13 shorts will compete for a series of ten awards.

The theme of “bullying the bully” has been a recurring one for Asian cinema, with films like “Confessions” in the past and “Better Days” lately dealing with the concept in a way that resulted in truly great movies. Considering the trouble the latter film faced with censorship in China, Layla Zhuqing Ji, in her feature debut, decided to shoot her take on the topic in Malaysia. Let us see how she fared.
