Michael Koresky, who wrote a monograph on Davies in 2014, penned a beautiful Sight & Sound obituary, in which he wrote that “no one made movies like Davies, who precisely sculpted out of a subjective past, creating films that glided on waves of contemplation and observation, inviting viewers to join him in the burnished darkness of a past about which he felt complex, contradictory feelings.” Last year, Dan Schindel wrote for Notebook about the role of poetry in Benediction (2022), and in 2012, Michael Guillen interviewed Davies about The Deep Blue Sea (2011). "The problem with film is that it's always in the eternal present,” says Davies. “But it's closest, I think, to music. You don't have to be a musician to follow a symphonic argument. Michael Jordan's impact on fashion might be obvious now, with everyone from Mark Wahlberg to Rihanna rocking a pair of Jordans, but when Nike first made the deal with the all-star athlete to create the shoes, it was a major gamble for everyone involved. The story of how that happened is now coming to life in a new movie, directed by Ben Affleck, titled "Air." Affleck also stars as Nike cofounder Phil Knight, with his best friend Matt Damon playing marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro and newly minted Egot winner Viola Davis portraying Michael's mother, Deloris Jordan.
"Air" comes from Amazon Studios and is getting a worldwide release this spring. According to Amazon, "'Air' reveals the unbelievable game-changing partnership between a then-rookie Michael Jordan and Nike's fledgling basketball division which revolutionized the world of sports and contemporary culture with the Air Jordan brand." Among the first batch of projects I wrote about when I first joined Arrow in the Head back in 2015 was an Australian creature feature called Red Billabong, which was described as being like “an Australian Jurassic Park“. The movie was released in its home country back in 2016, but never managed to make its way over to the U.S. But its North American fortunes are changing now, as the film has been acquired by Vertical Entertainment and they’re planning to give it a digital release in North America on January 13th. Red Billabong has been re-edited, re-mixed, re-scored, and retitled for this new release. It’s now going by the title Devil Beneath.

Fall season buzz is alive with celebrations of movie magic, from Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical “The Fabelmans” to “Empire of Light,” Sam Mendes’ romantic ode to old cinemas. But the most trenchant statement about the state of movies is here already.
It comes from Jordan Peele’s “Nope,” which confirms the filmmaker’s ability to generate suspense and awe from some seriously unpredictable places — but this Western sci-fi showdown also doubles as a meditation on the way film history marginalizes key figures and more crucially, assesses how the industry continues to alienate key voices. And, intentional or not, it’s also a window into the need to diversify arthouse audiences.
I won’t get into “Nope” spoilers, but it’s a brilliant conceit for Peele to envision the Hollywood horse-wranglers who are at the center of the movie as grandchildren of the Black jockey who sat astride the horse in...

Exclusive: Jessica Green (The Outpost) is the latest addition to the cast of Ben Affleck’s Nike drama for Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures, in which Affleck will star opposite his Good Will Hunting collaborator Matt Damon.
The untitled sports marketing pic has Damon playing maverick sneaker salesman and former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, with Affleck as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, in a story about Nike’s long-shot effort to sign Michael Jordan to its shoe company in the mid-’80s. It was an endorsement that seemed impossible at the time, but would become the most significant relationship between an athletic brand and an athlete ever, and launched the global, multibillion-dollar contemporary sneaker industry. Pic’s ensemble will also include Jason Bateman, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, Marlon Wayans, Matthew Maher, Chris Messina, Tom Papa, Julius Tennon, Joel Gretsch and Gustaf Skarsgård, as previously announced.

The CW is parting ways with one of its summer series.
According to TV Line, The Outpost has been canceled after four seasons.
The last-ever episode is currently set to air on the network Thursday, October 7 at 9/8c.
Like many CW series, the on-air ratings have sagged considerably.
The show returned in July to 450,000 viewers and a 0.05 rating, and it has been staying around those numbers since.
As a co-production, the series was thought to have lasted this long because co-productions are typically cheaper to produce because of the different outlets involved.
The series “follows Talon, the lone survivor of a race called Blackbloods. Electric Entertainment and Arrowstorm Entertainment said Monday they’ll resume production in Serbia for the third season of the CW’s fantasy-adventure series The Outpost. Production was halted at the onset of the coronavirus outbreak in mid-March.
Restarting production is a hot topic Stateside as the industry, unions and state and local officials hash out protocols. Governor Gavin Newsom of California Friday announced guidelines to restart on June 12 if local conditions permit. Meanwhile, Serbia has been one of several countries that are particularly active in wooing productions overseas.
The announcement was made jointly by Dean Devlin, CEO of Electric Entertainment and Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment.
Balkanic Media, a production company based in Belgrade, has an extensive post-lockdown production plan containing thorough and comprehensive guidelines on maintaining staff and crew’s safety on-set. All crew members are going through training to ensure safety measures are maintained.

Just ahead of its fall season rollout, which launches tonight, the CW is already looking ahead, announcing its 2019 summer programming lineup. It features six original series — one new and five returning — including three acquired dramas, as the CW has renewed all of its summer 2018 series. It is one of the CW’s biggest slates of original shows specifically designated for the off-season. The network has acquired British action drama Bulletproof from Sky Vision and ordered second seasons of legal drama Burden of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, and fantasy-adventure series The Outpost. The CW has also ordered new seasons of the hit magic series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters Of Illusion, and the classic improv comedy Whose Line Is It Anyway? all set for premiere in summer 2019. Premiere dates and times will be announced later.
Bulletproof, from Vertigo Films and Company Pictures, follows two undercover cops, Bishop and Pike as they chase down hardened criminals in London’s East End. Pike is an aspirational family man, the son of a decorated police officer who is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, but not be in his shadow. Meanwhile, Bishop grew up in care homes and on the streets, and never knew his father. Despite these differences Bishop and Pike are bonded by the same moral code and work brilliantly well together even when the chemistry between them looks set to explode.
Allan Niblo Michele Buck Judy Counihan Nick Love Noel Clarke, and Ashley Walters executive produce. The series was co-funded by Sky’s distribution arm, Sky Vision, who control international rights.
Burden Of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, is a serialized investigative drama about life-altering legal cases. IFC Films and Entertainment One produces in association with Eagle Vision Inc. with executive producers Ilana Frank, Adam Pettle, Jocelyn Hamilton, Linda Pope and Kristin Kreuk.

“Bulletproof” follows two undercover cops, Bishop and Pike as they chase down hardened criminals in London’s East End. But the series is more than high-octane action and thrilling cases.

Somehow, we made it to the halfway point of 2018.
As summer begins to really take hold, July might not be as packed with headline new shows as previous months were. But for anyone who thought that the allure of the sunny outdoors would curb the insatiable appetite for new TV shows: think again.
(We do this every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, and June.)
“Mostly 4 Millennials”
It’s been a big week for Adult Swim, with the mesmerizing “Mr. Neighbor’s House 2” premiering this past Sunday night and a new Casper Kelly short in the Infomercial slot. Now, to keep that momentum going comes this unclassifiable piece of satire (?) about a hyperconnected generation with a criminally short attention span.
“Sharp Objects”
One of the summer’s most anticipated series feels like one of the seasons surest bets.

We think it's fair to say that scripted offerings on the broadcast networks during the summer months are pretty much non-existent.
The CW is gearing up to launch two new dramas this summer, and we have the first trailer for one of them.
The Outpost's official description reads:
Years after her entire village is destroyed by a gang of brutal mercenaries, Talon travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, as she tracks the killers of her family.
On her journey to this outpost, Talon discovers she possesses a mysterious supernatural power that she must learn to control in order to save herself, and defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator.
The first trailer certainly shows off the action, and it actually looks like a mash-up of Reign and The Shannara Chronicles, which we're totally okay with.
