Disease and hope stand as the main pillars of Asia Dér’s sophomore documentary exploring the story of Gábor, an affluent art gallery owner battling cancer. He is constantly shifting between giving in to his sickness and staying the courageous man everyone around sees him as. The Hungarian filmmaker quietly observes his subject choosing a naturalistic visual style that allows the man to project strength, suffering and inspiration on his own terms.
Through sheer minimalism, Gábor becomes the sole driver of the narrative, the viewers following him around at his galleries, hospital and home. He stands out, but this is not due to his illness. He is charismatic and deeply cares about his work. Some scenes cast him as some sort of superstar. Or a playboy, as one of his sons calls him.

Ahead of its 39th edition, Poland’s Warsaw Film Festival is betting on timely topics.
“The role of filmmakers, and artists in general, is to react,” says festival director Stefan Laudyn.
“For years, we have been showing films that criticize the situation in various countries, not just in Poland. We try to avoid puff pieces.”
While there is space for “lighter topics” as well, supporting Ukraine – and Ukrainian filmmakers – remains one of the priorities.
“We initiated the first solidarity action with Ukraine back in 2014, after the annexation of Crimea, we also supported Oleg Sentsov. Last year, we featured the entire Ukrainian competition from Odesa International Film Festival, which couldn’t take place due to the war.”
This year, eight Ukrainian productions and co-productions will be shown at the fest. Including “Diagnosis: Dissent” by Denys Tarasov, about punitive psychiatry used by the Kgb, and Taras Dron’s “The Glass House,” where...

Festival will world premiere 12 features across its dramatic and documentary competitions.
Eight features have been selected for the main competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival, which is taking place as a physical event from August 14-21.
They include the world premieres of More Raça’s Andromeda Galaxy; Fatih Özcan’s Mavzer; Ruxandra Ghițescu’s Otto The Barbarian; and Ru Hasanov’s The Island Within. A further three films played in the Berlinale’s Panorama section earlier this year: Visar Morina’s Exile; Andrea Staka’s Mare; and Georgis Grigorakis’ Digger, which won the strand’s Cicae Award.
