As you may be aware, we here at Nerdly love to cover the more independent projects out there. This has led us to some truly great undiscovered gems over the years. The only thing we love more than pushing these projects is seeing the growth in the directors and actors we have come across. We know it’s a hard slog at times in the filmmaking game, so to see creators not just persevere but keep getting infinitely better, honing their craft and putting out great content for your eyeballs, well that makes it all the sweeter and more importantly our jobs easier.
Here we have the writing and directing duo of Richard Oakes and Adam Leader. Previously these boys released Hosts, which we covered quite a bit here on the site.

"Like Ted Lasso stumbled into the Hannibal universe and developed a taste for human flesh." XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for a freakin' weird horror comedy from the UK titled Feed Me, co-directed by filmmakers Adam Leader & Richard Oakes. This is premiering at Grimmfest this week in the UK, then will be on VOD in the US at the end of the month. After Fresh and Bones and All and Some Like It Rare, there's yet another cannibal horror film arriving this year to get a taste of. If you wish. Following the death of his wife, a broken man spirals into an abyss of night tremors & depression and finds himself in the home of a deranged cannibal who convinces him to take his own life in the most horrific way imaginable… This sound so demented and yet it's also a quirky comedy. The film stars Neal Ward,...

An Indonesian family’s trip to the orphanage where dad grew up turns into an unrelenting stream of nastiness as vengeful spirits emerge
Leaving their home in Jakarta, well-to-do dad Hanif (Ario Bayu), his wife Nadya (Hannah Al Rashid) and their three kids drive to the remote rural orphanage where Hanif grew up. At first, it’s all laughs and backseat bickering – until the car hits something. Having established that the collision was with a now dead deer, they drive off, only for the camera to reveal that the real victim was a child, now dead in a ditch. Up comes the title card, by which point viewers of this Indonesian horror will have some inkling that The Queen of Black Magic isn’t going to mess around.

I am slightly ashamed to admit that I haven’t seen many Indonesian horror films at all. It is something I need to rectify soon because I have heard good things about many films. So where better place to start than the new to Shudder movie The Queen of Black Magic.
With a slightly convoluted story, where we see past residents of an orphanage return to discover that someone is holding a grudge and now wants them dead. But it’s a movie that really doesn’t hold back when it comes to many elements of horror. None more so than gore. There’s a lot of it! It never feels over done or too much and it continuously impresses.

Malignant forces within Catholic tales of evil generally seek to create Hell on Earth by finding a host willing to read the ancient words serving as their key. It’s therefore rare to receive scenes of demonic possession wherein a writhing body with black fluid spewing from its mouth screams for a portal not to be opened. But that’s exactly how writer/director Kimo Stamboel opens his cinematic adaptation of DreadOut—an indie survival horror video game from Indonesia. He introduces a group of men holding the demon down while also coercing a woman (Salvita Decorte’s Nancy) to read a phrase only she sees on a weathered piece of parchment. Her young daughter is held captive, the police are banging on the door, and we’re at a complete loss for comprehension.

When mouthwatering Indonesian cuisine and romance are on the table, “Aruna & Her Palate” is a bouncy crowd-pleaser. Less tasty is the backdrop of a suspected bird flu outbreak that brings a food-loving epidemiologist into contact with her secret crush. Adapted from Laksmi Pamuntjak’s 2014 novel “The Bird Woman’s Palate,” “Aruna” manages to overcome its sometimes awkward ingredients thanks to crisp direction and appealing performances from a top-notch cast. Though unlikely to travel as widely as previous features by talented mononymous filmmaker Edwin “Aruna,” should benefit from exposure in the Culinary Cinema section at Berlin. The film received widespread critical support and performed Ok at the box office following a late September local release.
In breezy opening segments, Aruna establishes a warm and winning relationship with viewers by speaking directly to the camera. The device works splendidly, and it’s only a disappointment when it tapers off as the story proceeds.

In an interview I had with Timo Tjahjanto in 2017, in a question about the appeal of violence on screen, he stated: “Violence speaks to me easily, and I think way too easy, to the point that I find myself often fighting hard for self-restraint. I think that’s where Kimo usually comes to play, he is the guy that put breaks on my violence-throttle”. Well, let’s just say that Kimo is nowhere to be found in this movie.

Action fans could hardly wish for anything more than what’s served up in “The Night Comes for Us,” a Jakarta-set Triad crime epic boasting some of the most inventive, gory, and dazzlingly choreographed screen violence in recent memory. Confidently executed by Indonesian writer-director Timo Tjahjanto, whose credits as one half of the Mo Brothers team include “Killers” and “Headshot,” this cartoonish cavalcade of carnage potently reunites “The Raid” stars Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais as former friends on a corpse-strewn collision course. Though confusing at times and a little too much of a good thing at two hours, “Night” should satisfy the target audience via Netflix, where it launches Oct. 19.
An extremely energetic workout on the familiar tale of a criminal who turns his back on the mob following a crisis of conscience, “Night” sets things up with text information about “The Six Seas,” an elite squad of Triad enforcers.

With The Raid and The Raid 2, Gareth Evans and fight choreographer Yahan Ruhian have quite the knack for producing bone breaking, blood soaked fight scenes. But can this amazing choreography translate to a more toned down setting? That was the intention of the below video, made while frequent collaborators Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman, and Hannah Al Rashid visited Evans in Wales. Not only does it prove Evans doesn't need buckets of gore to pull off an amazing fight scene, now I want to make a full blown samurai epic. Check it below. While there's no word yet on what Gareth Evans' next movie might be, the director who created a reputation as one of the finest action sequence craftsmen across two "The Raid" movies, spent some time recently cutting together another short project. Gareth Evans is, with the exception of George Miller, the finest action filmmaker working today. Both The Raid and The Raid 2 exhibit such a masterful command of action choreography that it's almost embarrassing watching some of the half-ass fight scenes in Hollywood action films afterwards. Evans was approached for several big Hollywood movies, and there was one in particular that he came very close to making. In the end, he opted to continue to make films outside of the system, working instead with the same stunt team and the same actors that have made his films so far so compelling. He's been gearing up for his next film, Blister, for a while now, and I'm dying to see whatever it is. In the meantime, though, I know he's been just as eager to get back behind the camera, and he's been thinking about how to adapt the silat that...

This is badass! The Raid 1 & 2 director Gareth Evans has released a short film online that he produced entirely on his own. It's a short samurai film shot in Wales that is a test sequence to prove that they can film action similar to The Raid films but with a PG-13 rating. The main cast includes Hannah Al Rashid, Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman. This isn't anything more than a test sequence, but it's awesome to see and hopefully good inspiration for filmmakers trying to figure out how to shoot action. I dig the black & white style, as it allows the viewer to appreciate the composition. I'm a fan of Gareth Evans (watch my interview from a few years ago) and I think he's one of the most talented action directors making films today. Enjoy! Storyline from YouTube: In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the...

Gareth Evans, the director of The Raid films, made a badass samurai short film that you need to watch now! Evans is easily one of the best action film directors working today, and while we wait to see what his next film will be, we are treated to this short which centers on three dueling warriors. Evans called on the cast of his previous films to star in the short, including Yayah Ruhian (The Raid, The Raid 2), Cecep Arif Rahman (The Raid 2), and Hannah Al Rashid (V/H/S 2 “Safe Haven”). It must've been fun for this team to get together again to create something so awesome. Here's the synopsis:
In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the task of delivering a treaty between two rival lords. During her journey through the woods however, she finds herself hunted by two assassins intent on intercepting...

While we all wait patiently (or maybe not) for The Raid 3, director Gareth Evans has not been idle. Indeed, after not having picked up a camera for a while, he decided to make a short when his colleagues Cecep Arif Rahman, Yayan Ruhian and Hannah Al Rashid were visiting him in his native Wales. In a time of civil war, a young warrior is given the task of delivering a treaty between two rival lords. During her journey through the woods however, she finds herself hunted by two assassins intent on intercepting her message of peace in a bid to maintain the fear, instability and violent rule of their leader.According to Evans in a post on Quiet Earth, the short was made in part to...

Gareth Evans has created some of the most elaborately constructed and enthrallingly directed action sequences of all time in his martial arts movies "The Raid: Redemption" and "The Raid 2," and now he's unleashed another stunning bit of action choreography in a new short film posted to his YouTube page. The film is a pre-visualization of a fight scene and centers around a female warrior who finds herself hunted by two assassins. If the scene seems a bit tame compared to Evans' blood-squirting, head-popping, heavy R-rated action set pieces from "The Raid," just know that it was the director's every intention to stay within PG-13 limits. Posting a short commentary on Twitter, the director wrote: "Had the pleasure of having Yayan Ruhian, Cecep Arif Rahman and Hannah Al Rashid visit me in Wales over the summer holidays for a week or so. While here, we made the following little short...

Directors/writers: Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Gregg Hale, Eduardo Sánchez, Timo Tjahjanto, John Davies, Jamie Nash and Adam Wingard. Cast: Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Al Rashid, Fachry Albar, Oka Antara and Devon Brookshire. There is something to be said about horror anthologies of late; they are short and sweet. The ABC's of Death (2012) offered dozens of tales in a short time frame, late last year. Now, V/H/S/2, the sequel to 2012's V/H/S, brings five tales in under ninety minutes. The longest in this feature clocks in at thirty minutes ("Safe Haven") and each story has something unique to offer. Shot found footage style, via several creative ways, V/H/S/2 manages to be uniquely compelling, while including several scare worthy moments. It would be best to discuss each episode from best to worse. The best short is titled "Safe Haven." Interestingly enough, the director of...

Ritual was originally titled Modus Anomali (Strange Way). This title was filmed in the jungles of Indonesia. And recently, this film was picked up by Screen Media Films for release in North America, this Summer. The film's story does not reveal much. Essentially, a husband (Rio Dewanto) and father loses his family, while on vacation. A strange figure follows John and this figure subjects John to all sorts of torture. John is buried, beaten and put through a series of tests. This man will have to use every internal resource to reunite with his family, or face death several feet below ground. The trailer for Ritual has recently been released. And, the clip is a compelling look at the feature. Asian horror fans are encouraged to take a look below and prepare for the film's release August 27th, 2013. Release Date: August 27th, 2013 (DVD). Director/writer: Joko Anwar. Cast: Rio Dewanto,...

The horror anthology has received a fair bit of new blood lately with two high-profile effort V/H/S and The ABCs of Death both arriving on a huge wave of hype in horror circles but ended up raining a shower of disappointing poop over us instead. Both indulged in the worst of what this genre’s filmmakers seem to think fans want, splashes of misogyny, gore purely for gore’s sake and the same old story repeated ad infinitum with the same old scares played the same old ways. The insanely quick turnaround of V/H/S 2 (or as its original brilliant title had it, S-v/H/S) was cause for concern but with filmmakers more exciting than those involved in the first instalment,...
