‘The Daily Show’ editor Cathy Trasborg on letting Trump supporters ‘reveal themselves’ in the edit: ‘We just let them play out’
Image
The Daily Show editor Cathy Trasborg has edited hundreds of episodes of the long-running late-night series, earning an Emmy Award for Best Picture Editing for Variety Programming (Segment) last year and three other nominations since 2020.

“I’ve learned the show a little bit better, the type of direction that we’re looking to go in, and what kind of comedic pacing they’re looking for in our field pieces, or our sketches,” Trasborg tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Editors panel when asked how her time on the show has evolved since her first episode in 2019.

“I started with the Trump administration in 2019, and we got a little bit of a reprieve with Biden, and now we're back with Trump again, and he's flooding the zone all the time with his news,” she adds. “So every day it’s changing. I don’t think I watched the...

‘The Daily Show’ Creates Charity to Help Elon Musk: ‘This Man Is Barely Worth $300 Billion’ | Video
Image
“The Daily Show” is dedicating itself to a worthy cause: making comically rich billionaire Elon Musk even richer. At least Troy Iwata is.

“This man is barely worth $300 billion at this point, but we can change that,” the senior correspondent said on Thursday night. As he spoke, the light around him darkened and soft piano played, mimicking charity commercials. “For the simple price of $50,000, you can help a 53-year-old boy afford all the things he was already able to afford.”

It should be noted that Iwata started by asking the “Daily Show” audience for a measly $30,000 or, as he put it, “just 70,000 cups of coffee a day.” That number ramped up to $2.5 million by the end of the segment. It’s all in the interest of making sure “the richest man in America stays the richest man in America,” Iwata explained.

Repeatedly, host Jordan Klepper interrupted Iwata and tried to stop his plug.

John Oliver Returns to ‘The Daily Show’ to Celebrate the End of American Democracy — Watch
Image
John Oliver returned to Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” to “welcome America to its monarchy era.” He had no real words of wisdom for us. No, no, no. Oliver showed up to “gloat.”

“America had it’s little fun, didn’t you? Experimenting with democracy. You fought so hard to get away from us — acting up, throwing all of that tea into the harbor,” the HBO “Last Week Tonight” host said while standing behind Jon Stewart, his former boss. “You told everybody that you were gonna be different. You weren’t going to turn out like your mean old dad, who was so horrible to you growing up. So we stepped back. We let you spend your wild teen years experimenting with your ridiculous ideas of checks and balances because deep down we knew that once you got that nonsense out of your system that you’d be back.

Inside Jon Stewart’s Live ‘Daily Show’ Election Special as a Trump Victory Became Inevitable: ‘A Beautiful Distraction’
Image
Walking into the 11th Avenue studio of “The Daily Show” on Tuesday night was instantly an odd experience. Typically, recordings for the Comedy Central staple are crackling with energy. People talk and laugh, quoting late night jokes or comparing their list of favorite correspondents. But on election night, the queue crowd wasn’t excited so much as tense as it filed in around 10:15 p.m. Et, when the first results were showing a lean in Donald Trump’s direction.

It was a feeling that continued throughout the hourlong live special. What started as a fun way to spend the evening morphed into something akin to taking a sick dog to the park for one last game of fetch as the results came in. But the mounting dread permeating the studio audience highlighted one key insight: we still need Jon Stewart, perhaps now more than ever.

Of course, this unease...

Insane Clown Posse Endorse Kamala Harris
Image
In what surely comes as a heartbreaking disappointment to Donald Trump, Insane Clown Posse’s Violent J has endorsed Kamala Harris for president.

Speaking with comedian Troy Iwata for a recent segment on The Daily Show, Violent J confirmed that Harris is his preferred pick for the White House, saying “I want her to win because she’s a Democrat, and I love my mom.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he learned how to pronounce Harris’ first name — calling it “fresh” — and weighed in on a number of hot-topic issues, like mass deportation, which he said “fuck no” to. “Now I remember why I hated Trump, that wall shit,” he said.

As for women’s rights, he believes in them (“they have the right to be the fuckin’ shit”), and as for environmental conservation, he thinks its time humans get over their superiority complex, saying,...

Watch ‘The Daily Show’ Team Discuss Election Vibes with Democratic National Convention Attendees — Exclusive
Image
Few words pop up more frequently in 2024 election discourse than “vibes.” While the 2020 presidential contest was billed as an existential clash between competing visions for American democracy amid a deadly pandemic, its sequel has largely been defined by questions of weirdness (or lack thereof). Policy has taken a backseat as newly minted Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz seek to create an image that distances their ticket from both the apocalyptic rhetoric and airing of grievances that define Donald Trump’s campaign and the aura of doom that surrounded the final days of Joe Biden’s. As this week’s Democratic National Convention unfolds from Chicago, the party is seeking to project an aura of joy and optimism that directly contrasts with the bleakness and machismo that emerged from the Republican National Convention last month.

But are vibes enough? That’s the question that “The Daily Show...

‘The Daily Show’ EPs on Tackling the DNC From Chicago and That Election Twist: ‘Biden Was Becoming a Bit More Depressing Every Day’
Image
No one at “The Daily Show” anticipated Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race, even if they recognized a significant loss of momentum for him, but they certainly aren’t complaining about the switch to Kamala Harris as the DNC gets underway.

“It was very refreshing for us because we have been in the Joe Biden versus Donald Trump minds for five years now, so there wasn’t a lot more to plumb when it comes to jokes about them or the perspectives or thoughts about them,” co-executive producer and writer Zhubin Parang told TheWrap ahead of their run of shows from Chicago’s DNC.

He added, “Joe Biden was becoming a bit more depressing every day to talk about and to show a video of. So this made talking about the campaign a lot more fun. It suddenly felt like a real campaign, and a real battle, and a real match of foes,...

Space Cadet Cast & Character Guide
Image
Space Cadet features a diverse ensemble cast full of strange, unique characters. Emma Roberts plays Rex Simpson, a woman from Florida in her early 30s who dreams of being an astronaut and makes up for the lack of traditional qualifications with her smarts, passion, and drive. Space Cadet has romantic comedy elements, with Tom Hopper playing Logan O'Leary, Rex's superior at NASA's Johnson Space Center and her main romantic interest.

The 2024 romantic-comedy movie Space Cadet follows Emma Roberts as an unconventional hopeful astronaut with a hilarious supporting cast. The original Prime Video movie takes an interesting approach to the space movie subgenre through Roberts character and the rest of the astronaut candidates, comically referred to as Ascans. While Space Cadet is certainly a comedy with romantic elements, it has an important message and a lot of heart behind it. Space Cadet can make viewers laugh out loud and...

‘Space Cadet’ Review: Is This Prime Video Film An Endurance Test For The Emma Roberts Fandom?
Image
Emma Roberts has been in some iconic movies like Valentine’s Day, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Scream 4, We’re the Millers, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter. And ever since she first stepped into the world of American Horror Story in 2013, she has become one of the most recognizable faces in the horror genre, at least on the small screen. But it seems like she hasn’t had the same kind of luck when it comes to feature films since the 2015 film Nerve. And it’s not like she hasn’t tried. Roberts has done rom-coms, science-fantasies, action-horrors, straight-up horrors, and whatever categories Madame Web and UglyDolls fall into. However, I think she has come up with the ultimate test for her fans in the form of Space Cadet.

Liz W. Garcia’s Space Cadet tells the story of Rex Simpson, a girl living in Florida who aspires to go to space.

Tiffany “Rex” Simpson (Emma Roberts) has always dreamed of going to space, but life isn’t going quite as planned. Determined to turn things around, she aims high and with the embellishing touch of her supportive best friend Nadine (Poppy Liu), her “doctored” application lands her in NASA’s ultra-competitive astronaut training program. In over her head, Rex relies on her quick wits, moxie and determination to get to the top of her class. The Daily Show Ups Josh Johnson, Troy Iwata & Grace Kuhlenschmidt to Correspondent
Image
It’s been six years since Comedy Central’s The Daily Show last brought on a new correspondent, but it’s making up for lost time—by naming three.

Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson, and Grace Kuhlenschmidt are now officially full-fledged correspondents.

As regular viewers already know, all three have been familiar faces on The Daily Show for several months now.

Iwata and Kuhlenschmidt both first appeared on the show last October in in-studio “remote” pieces. Johnson first appeared on air in February with a pre-taped report on sneakerheads’ reactions to Donald Trump’s release of Trump-branded shoes, but has been a writer for the show since 2017.

Tds had not added a new face to its correspondent lineup since 2018, when Jaboukie Young-White was hired. (Young-White departed in 2021.)

The Daily Show’s current format sees Jon Stewart at the desk on Monday nights—at least through the election—while a roster of...

‘The Daily Show’ Signs Up Josh Johnson, Troy Iwata & Grace Kuhlenschmidt As Correspondents
Image
Exclusive: After finding its new host in the returning Jon Stewart, The Daily Show is staffing up.

The Comedy Central series has signed up three new correspondents to its news team: Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson, Grace Kuhlenschmidt.

They are the first new correspondents to join the show in six years, since the arrival of Jaboukie Young-White, who joined in 2018 and left in 2021. The last new correspondent still on the show was Dulcé Sloan, who joined in September 2017 (Jordan Klepper returned in December 2019 having previously been featured on the show).

Iwata and Kuhlenschmidt joined the show in October 2023 and Johnson, who was previously a writer on the show, made his on-screen debut in February. The move to official correspondents just happened, despite being on the show for a few months.

They join Ronny Chieng, Desi Lydic, Michael Kosta, Lewis Black, Klepper, and Sloan. However, the new trio will not be sharing...

Stephen Colbert Wrote an Email That’s Become a Playbook For Daily Show Staffers
Image
When it comes to Daily Show field pieces, most everyone can agree that Stephen Colbert was the master.

So when the master creates a ten point list for how to create a successful field piece, you better believe other Daily Show correspondents pay attention.

In fact, according to current Tds staffers Desi Lydic and Troy Iwata, Colbert’s tips have become required reading for all new Daily Show news team members.

In Monday’s episode of The Daily Show: Ears Edition podcast, Lydic described how an email Colbert once wrote to Rob Riggle has been passed down from one generation of Daily Show correspondents to another.

“Rob passed it along to Al Madrigal, and Al passed it along to Jordan [Klepper], who passed it to us,” Lydic explained to Iwata. “And then we passed it to you.”

Iwata revealed that he’d actually received the email from three different people: Lydic,...

‘Daily Show’ Veterans React to Jon Stewart’s Surprise Return: “Jordan’s Back!”
Image
Just how big a deal is Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show desk? John Oliver, the former Daily Show correspondent turned HBO Last Week Tonight host, compared it to NBA legend Michael Jordan’s return to the Chicago Bulls in 1995 after retiring from the game.

“Jordan’s back!” Oliver quipped in an interview with NBC’s Willie Geist.

Oliver was caught as off guard as everyone else with the news, which broke in the middle of the interview with Geist.

“I mean, that’s, that is a surprise,” Oliver said. “That’s a show that needs a host. He certainly is a very, very good one. So yeah, it’ll be exciting to see what he does.”

But he also added that the show “should appoint a permanent host” after Stewart’s run, naming former Peacock host Amber Ruffin and former Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. as strong contenders.

The Comedy Central series introduced another new face last night, Grace Kuhlenschmidt.

Kuhlenschmidt is a stand-up comedian, actress and writer, who recurred in the final season of Max’s Search Party and was in the first season of Peacock’s Killing It.

During last night’s show, hosted by Desus Nice, Kuhlenschmidt was introduced in a skit alongside contributor Michael Kosta. Now that we have an answer to the question of whether one should take $500,000 or lunch with Jay-Z (Jay said take the money), the duo were answering the question themselves.

Kuhlenschmidt said that you should “definitely have lunch with Jay-Z” as he “probably has Beyonce’s phone number”.

Kuhlenschmidt, who was recognized as a New Faces: Creators by Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, also appeared in the first season of Showtime’s Ziwe and wrote for Audible podcast Hot White Heist,...

‘The Daily Show’ Debuts Co-Hosts & Introduces Troy Iwata
Image
The Daily Show is currently going through a lineup of guest hosts as it continues to search for a permanent one.

Last night, the Comedy Central show debuted a new twist – two hosts behind the desk.

Correspondents Michael Kosta, who has been hosting this week, the show’s first week back since the writers strike, and Ronny Chieng joined forces on Thursday night’s show.

It marked the first time that the show had two hosts behind the desk, a strategy that has been proposed as a new format going forward.

Last year, Deadline revealed that The Daily Show was considering hosting duos and trios to replace Trevor Noah with correspondents including Desi Lydic as a potential contender.

Chieng, who has starred in movies including M3gan and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, said, “Tonight, you’re getting two hosts for the price of one.”

“Are they...

‘The Daily Show’ Slams Scholastic’s Book Banning Option: ‘If You’re Going to Be Racist and Sexist You Can’t Also Be Lazy’ (Video)
The Daily Show (1996)
“The Daily Show’s” Michael Kosta has a problem with Scholastic’s new book censorship policy. Under this new guideline, schools can opt to exclude what have been called diverse titles from their Scholastic Book Fair. Those titles include any book that explores race, gender and sexuality, including biographies of Malala and LeBron James.

“So now bigots can just check a box and all the books will be removed? C’mon guys, if you’re going to be racist and sexist you can’t also be lazy,” Kosta said on Thursday night.

The late night host encouraged parents to “put the work in.”

“Who knows? Maybe if you took the time to read these books that you think are so terrible, actually absorb them, you might just find out that all kids books are terrible,” Kosta said.

The show, video of which you can watch above, then cut to “The Daily Show” correspondent Troy Iwata,...

Hope Through Horror: Why ‘Summoning Sylvia’ Is Such an Important Movie in 2023
Image
There are nearly 500 anti-lgbtq+ bills currently advancing through state legislatures. Many bills specifically target drag shows or other public performances–censoring or outright banning them. Of course, there are also plenty of Don’t Say Gay bills, bathroom bills, and other anti-trans bills circulating in this country. It’s a terrifying time to be queer. Such lawmaking creates an atmosphere of fear, hate, and violence, and it’s difficult to find joy. Joy, such an elusive experience these days. But I found the joy I so desperately needed recently with Wesley Taylor and Alex Wyse’s Summoning Sylvia, one of the year’s most important releases.

The film tells the story of a group of gay friends on a weekend retreat to celebrate Larry’s (Travis Coles) upcoming nuptials. Reggie (Troy Iwata), Kevin (Noah Ricketts), and Nico (Frankie Grande) bankroll a three-night stay in a creepy Victorian-style home, where allegedly...

Q&a with Summoning Sylvia’s Troy Iwata
Image
Now available on VOD and Digital HD on all major platforms from The Horror Collective, our latest Q&a is with Summoning Sylvia co-star Troy Iwata who tells us all about the new LGBTQ horror comedy:

What drew you to Summoning Sylvia and the character of Reggie?

Troy Iwata: I actually auditioned for Kevin originally, sent in an audition tape for that and then just got an offer for Reggie so I was like…ok. Any opportunity that offers a refreshing glimpse into queer representation I’m all for. First off I was obsessed with how funny the script was and the blending of genres was enticing as well. I loved that it was a story that took place after the coming-out process, after the self-discovery and acceptance process. There’s an entire life that happens after all of those journeys for queer people and it’s light and beautiful...

‘Summoning Sylvia’ Review
Image
Stars: Travis Coles, Frankie Grande, Troy Iwata, Noah J. Ricketts, Nicholas Logan, Michael Urie, Veanne Cox | Written and Directed by Wesley Taylor, Alex Wyse

A gay bachelor party gets mysterious when the group of men recount the house’s legend from a hundred years ago. A woman, Sylvia, slaughtered, and buried her son beneath the floorboards. But things get even worse when Larry remembers he was supposed to be bonding with his soon-to-be brother-in-law, and as he invites him over, the séance begins.

If you hadn’t guessed from that synopsis above, Summoning Sylvia is a comedy horror and thankfully, what it does best, is actually be funny. There are lots of jokes on stereotypes, which could often seem as an easy joke or perhaps lazy but it doesn’t feel like that here at all. The two writers have to take credit for that (Wesley Taylor and Alex Wyse...

‘Dash & Lily’ Canceled After One Season By Netflix
Image
The romance is over for Dash & Lily. Netflix has confirmed the series will not be returning for a second season.

Austin Abrams and Midori Francis starred in the holiday romantic comedy series, from Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and Nick Jonas’ Image 32.

Described as a whirlwind Holiday romance, the series revolved around cynical Dash (Abrams) and optimistic Lily (Francis) who traded dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they passed back and forth at locations all across New York City, finding they had more in common with each other than they would have expected.

The season 1 finale, which aired in November 2020 and now serves as the series finale, saw Dash (Abrams) and Lily (Francis) finally kiss at midnight on New Year’s Eve at NYC’s famed Strand Bookstore.

Based on the YA book series Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares from authors Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, the series...

Stars: Austin Abrams, Midori Francis, Dante Brown, Troy Iwata, James Saito, Leah Kreitz, Keana Marie, Glenn McCuen, Ianne Fields Stewart, Diego Guevara, Patrick Vaill, Jodi Long | Directed by Fred Savage, Pamela Romanowsky, Brad Silberling

Does it get any more festive than snow in New York? I know many, many people have the lifelong dream of spending Christmas in the Big Apple and I have to admit that it is a dream that I also share! The closest I am probably ever going to get to this dream was the opening moments of the new Netflix original series Dash and Lily which involves a panning camera which showing the classic New York buildings complete with snow falling from the sky!

Dash and Lily follows all the conventions of your classic teenage ‘relatable’ series; for example the contrast between Dash who hates Christmas with a passion, against Lily who loves the festive period.

Dash & Lily (2020)
If ‘Dash & Lily’ Gets a Season 2, Troy Iwata Really Wants Langston to Leave the Apartment
Dash & Lily (2020)
(Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for Netflix’s “Dash & Lily” through its finale.)

Eagle-eyed “Dash & Lily” fans who have already binged their way through the show’s eight-episode first season know that while Dash (Austin Abrams) and Lily (Midori Francis) spend the show running around New York City at Christmastime, completing dares while they fall in love via notebook with a little help from their friends, one key character only makes it outside twice: Lily’s brother, Langston.

“No, you are as observant as I am,” Troy Iwata, who plays Langston, said of his character’s self-imposed house arrest over winter break. “On our first day, when we went through the script, I went up to (creator Joe Tracz), who wrote it, and I was like, ‘So Langston literally never leaves his room?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’ So I said, ‘Great, I have some ideas for costuming.

Dash & Lily (2020)
Troy Iwata on Why Netflix’s ‘Dash & Lily’ Is Important for Queer and Mixed-Race Communities
Dash & Lily (2020)
(Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for Netflix’s “Dash & Lily.”)

For Troy Iwata, his new Netflix holiday rom-com “Dash & Lily” is more than just a love letter to Christmas and New York City — it’s also a love letter to the queer and mixed-race communities that the gay actor, who is half-Japanese and half-Jewish, belongs.

“I think our show, it’s very refreshing for me to be able to represent both the queer community, but also the mixed-race community,” Iwata told TheWrap. “I think that our show does a really wonderful job of very unapologetically portraying Langston in that way.”

“Dash & Lily” focuses on the title characters, played by Austin Abrams and Midori Francis, who have a whirlwind romance at Christmastime in New York when Dash discovers a mysterious notebook left by Lily at her favorite bookstore, The Strand, to try to find her perfect match.

Midori Francis
How the Romantic Leads of Dash & Lily Found Chemistry Without Sharing Any Scenes
Midori Francis
Most romances rely on chemistry to work on screen, which requires actors to actually be in scenes together. So what are two stars to do when the plot of the romance requires them to rarely even meet?  Dash & Lily's Midori Francis and Austin Abrams took some inspiration from their characters. In the new holiday-themed Netflix series, Lily (Francis) is hoping for a little romance in her life, so she and her brother Langston (Troy Iwata) leave a clue-filled journal in a bookstore. Dash (Abrams) finds it, and without ever meeting, he and Lily begin a romance played out in a journal full of clues, dares, and secrets that they leave for each other all over NYC.  Since Dash and Lily don't meet Irl...

Dash & Lily Review (Spoiler-Free)
This Dash & Lily review contains no spoilers.

With a big, beating heart and a surprising amount of insight, Netflix’s series Dash & Lily is here to remind us of the world outside and the magical feeling of falling in love in the “before-time.” Based on the young adult book series Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares from Rachel Cohn and David Levithan (who wrote Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) Dash & Lily continues in the proud tradition of Netflix romcoms and Netflix holiday fare of small-scale stories with warmth.

Lily, a shy teenager who’s sick of being the only one without a partner, optimistically puts a red moleskin notebook in New York’s famous Strand bookstore among some of her favorite books (Salinger) for a fellow bookworm to find. Inside the book is a puzzle and a dare, which heartbroken loner Dash finds and is eager to solve.

Netflix’s ‘Dash & Lily’ Ushers in Sweet, Escapist Christmas Cheer: TV Review
Image
The truest litmus test for how someone feels about the Christmas season is a simple question: is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” a sad song about holiday loneliness, or a sweet song about persevering to celebrate life’s everyday joys? The genius of the song is that it equally serves both the glass half full and the glass half empty perspectives, which find themselves battling it out every December for ultimate superiority.

“Dash & Lily,” based on Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s YA novel “Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares,” hinges on this exact conflict. Unfolding over the platonic ideal of a New York City Christmas week, “Dash & Lily” tells the story of an aggressively sweet teen romance between cynical Dash (Austin Abrams) with optimistic Lily (Midori Francis) as they each try to convince the other why Christmas sucks/rules. It’s never in doubt which side...

What Lies Below Trailer: Mom's New Boyfriend Is Terrifyingly Weird
Image
Vertical Entertainment has released the trailer for What Lies Below. In the footage, we learn that mom's new boyfriend is not exactly who he seems to be. The mystery thriller was directed and written by Braden R. Duemmler, and it will be available On Demand starting December 4th. While the release date isn't too far away, the footage makes it seem like a Halloween release would have been ideal for What Lies Below. Most people spent the majority of their Halloween indoors and this seems like it would have been a good addition.

What Lies Below focuses on Liberty, a socially awkward 16-year-old, who returns from two months at camp to a blindsided introduction of her Mother's fiancé, John Smith. His charm, intelligence, and beauty paint the picture of a man too perfect to be human. One can tell right from the start that something is off with Mr. Smith,...
