Singer Halsey and “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney are set to co-star in and produce “The Players Table,” a TV series based on Jessica Goodman’s novel “They Wish They Were Us,” an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
The potential series would mark Halsey’s television acting and producing debuts.
Here’s the logline for the show, which has not yet landed at a network or streaming service: Set at an exclusive Long Island prep school, high school senior Jill Newman (Sweeney) works to uncover the truth about her best friend’s death three years ago and the role she and her fellow “players” — members of the secret society that rules the school– may have had in it.
Along with Halsey, “The Players Table” would be produced by Jean-Marc Vallée and Nathan Ross’ Crazyrose, Sweeney’s Fifty-Fifty Films and Endeavor Content. Annabelle Attanasio is attached to write and direct the project.

In an era of endless reboots, remakes, and sequels — “Ghostbusters,” “Saw,” “Oceans 8,” the list goes on — some of the most beloved film franchises have yet to be milked for their IP. Chief among them is the “Back to the Future” trilogy, Robert Zemeckis’ ’80s classic featuring a time-traveling teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his wacky scientist companion Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd).
But if you have been lusting after the opportunity to see what “Back to the Future” would look like today, your chance has arrived courtesy of YouTube user EZRyderX47. The account recently posted a deepfake featuring Fox’s face convincingly replaced with Tom Holland’s and Lloyd’s replaced with Robert Downey Jr.’s.
To the casual observer, it’s tough to tell the actors in the scene are the subjects of digital plastic surgery. They look and move naturally enough, but their voices are still those of Fox and Lloyd’s.

Arise, Jane Foster, rightful wielder of Mjölnir?
That’s something which has already occurred in Marvel Comics, but what are the chances that we see Chris Hemsworth’s beloved hero give way to Miss. Foster on the big screen? Fairly slim, or so we thought. As it turns out though, that’s actually exactly what’s going to happen in Thor 4.
Announced at Comic-Con earlier tonight, Thor: Love and Thunder will be the fourth installment in the series and, get this, it’ll see Natalie Portman return to the McU as Jane Foster and become the female Thor. We kid you not.

Natalie Portman is set to portray the female Thor, Thor 4 director Taika Waititi announced today. The film will open in fall 2021. Portman played Jane Foster in the first two Thor movies.
No surprise here at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel, but Taika Waititi was on hand to talk about Thor 4 along with Tessa Thompson who played Valkyrie in Thor Ragnarok along with Chris Hemsworth. Why no surprise? News broke earlier this week that Waititi was returning to Thor. He’s also here for FX’s What We Do In Shadows later tonight at the San Diego Convention Center. Thompson appeared earlier on HBO’s Westworld panel.
Valkyrie will be “re-investing in her people” and rebuilding Asgard said Thompson. “The love I feel for him is thunder,” said Thompson.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has closed a life rights deal with singer/songwriter Halsey. The hope is to develop a movie loosely based on her life, which she would star in. I’m told the closest cousin to what they hope for here is a vehicle that does for her what 8 Mile did for Eminem.
How did this happen? The studio often meets youthful for roles in its movies, and the decision after the meeting with Halsey was that the best course was to sculpt a vehicle for her, and about her. Halsey is a 23-year old biracial charismatic singer and social activist from New Jersey who is currently in Australia touring her latest album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. She made headlines recently for a rousing speech given during the Women’s March in D.C. in March. Her hits include Now Or Never, Him and I, and Bad At Love.

"It reaches everyone." Gravitas Ventures has release the full-length official trailer for Jason Aron's Back in Time, the new documentary about Back to the Future. We first featured a trailer for this back in March when the film was still looking for funding through Kickstarter. Aron's documentary focuses on the impact that the film has had, and the success it has achieved, connecting with so many fans all over the world. It looks like a fun, if not lightweight doc, that celebrates so many of the people and artists behind the film. And of course, all the people who love the film, too. There's some excellent clips and footage about the DeLorean, lots of interviews with the likes of Zemeckis & Spielberg, and more. It's time to go back to the future again. As someone who has listened to every DVD/Blu-ray commentary more than once, read every reliable book released and conjured up his own ideas of how the movie changed the world, I was skeptical about a documentary about Back to the Future. I mean, what else could be said?
Back in Time, from director Jason Aron, looks back on the making of the movie that is known part of our day-to-day culture. Aron revisit with the cast and crew that made the movie and explores the appeal and lasting effects that Back to the Future has had on multiple generations, including those inspired by star Michael J. Fox’s battle with Parkinson’s.
You can check this one out as part of the film’s 30th anniversary by purchasing the documentary on Blu-ray/DVD, online, and in Los Angeles theaters on October 21st.

Star Wars may be the main exponent of sci-fi nostalgia these days, but it’s not the only celebrated example out there. The fall festival rush is upon us. Locarno is currently ramping up. Venice has released their line-up and Thom Powers and the Toronto International Film Festival team have dropped a bomb with a previously unannounced new feature from powerhouse docu-provocateur Michael Moore. It is truly a miracle that the production of a film such as Moore’s upcoming Where To Invade Next (see still above) managed to go completely undetected by the filmmaking community until it was literally announced to world premiere at one of the largest film festivals in the world. Programmed as a one of the key films in the Special Presentations section at Tiff, the film sees Moore telling “the Pentagon to ‘stand down’ — he will do the invading for America from now on.” Also announced to premiere at Tiff was Avi Lewis’ This Changes Everything, which has slowly been rising up this list, as well as...

It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

Well folks, after a rather long and brutal winter (at least for me here in Buffalo), we are finally heading into the wonderful warmth of summer, but with that blast of sunshine and steamy humidity comes the mid-year drought of major film fests. After the Sheffield Doc/Fest concludes on June 10th and AFI Docs wraps on June 21st, we likely won’t see any major influx in our charts until Locarno, Venice, Telluride and Tiff announce their line-ups in rapid succession. In the meantime, we can look forward to the intriguing onslaught of films making their debut in Sheffield, including Brian Hill’s intriguing examination of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, The Confessions of Thomas Quick, and Sean McAllister’s film for which he himself was jailed in the process of making, A Syrian Love Story, the only two films world premiering in the festival’s main competition.
