Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. Now Deadline reports that Wolf Night has found a home at Sony’s Screen Gems.
Michael Bitar is overseeing the project for Screen Gems, while Alex Ginno does the same for Platinum Dunes.
Screen Gems has put out a whole lot of horror movies over the years, with titles including Don’t Breathe, Resident Evil, Underworld, Deliver Us from Evil, The Grudge, Carrie, The Stepfather, Prom Night, The Pope’s Exorcist, Insidious: The Red Door, and the upcoming Tarot. We had learned about an interesting horror project earlier this month titled Wolf Night, a werewolf movie set to be directed by Jonathan Liebesman. The film has been compared to both District 9 and The Purge… with werewolves… and Deadline brings us a big update this week.
The hot Platinum Dunes package has been picked up by Screen Gems, Deadline informs us, with Michael Bay and Brad Fuller producing Wolf Night for Platinum Dunes.
Will Honley and April Maguire wrote the screenplay for Wolf Night, but aside from the comparisons to the aforementioned movies, the plot is under wraps at this time.
Jonathan Liebesman’s directorial credits over the years also include Rings (2005), The Killing Room (2009), Wrath of the Titans (2012), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014).
Will Honley recently wrote Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

Genre films have often utilized the depiction of vampirism as a powerful metaphor for addiction, as seen in films like The Hunger (1983), The Addiction (19995), and Habit (1997). More recently, My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To (2020) used vampirism as a potent allegory not only for addiction, but also for people living with chronic illness and the toll it takes on their caregivers. In his new film Blood, written by Will Honley (Bloodline), director Brad Anderson adeptly blends motherhood, vampirism, and chronic illness, emphasized by the need for blood, to present a compelling story of a family torn apart.
Blood stars Michelle Monaghan as Jess, a caring nurse and mother, who is also a recovering addict going through a nasty divorce and a battle for custody of her children. Jess’ ex-husband, played by Skeet Ulrich, got the house, the babysitter, and a new baby, and is using Jess’ previous struggles...

Vampirism has been treated as a metaphor for more prosaic addictions in movies before. In “Blood,” however, it’s one more hassle a recovering addict doesn’t need added to the burdens of her already discordant family life. Starring Michelle Monaghan as a mother just out of rehab whose young son gets bitten — then develops an insatiable appetite for the titular fluid — Brad Anderson’s film steers a middle course between dysfunctional domestic drama and supernatural horror. That balance doesn’t completely work. But solid performances and some strong, occasionally unpleasant content make this an involving if not entirely satisfying watch. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to limited U.S. theaters this Friday, then On Demand platforms Jan. 31.

Director Adam Robitel reunites with surviving cast members Taylor Russell and Logan Miller for this sequel to 2019’s puzzles-and-deathtraps franchise-starter. Unfortunately, the film fails to learn any of the lessons from the previous movie and opts for a passable retread rather than bringing anything new to the table.

As a huge fan of the first Escape Room, I had a really great time with the sequel, Tournament of Champions, which reunites survivors Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) directly after they survived the deadly games of the mysterious Minos organization. Instead of running, the duo decides to head to New York in search of answers and in hopes of bringing those at Minos to justice. But before they get too far in their investigative efforts, Ben and Zoey find themselves unexpectedly trapped in a new game, but this time not only are the rules different, but they’re also playing alongside other survivors of Minos’ previous escape rooms, too. And the clock is ticking, as they’re forced to decode new clues, avoid perilous traps, and withstand Minos’ tortuous games in this “Tournament of Champions.”

Updated: Escape Room 2 will now open on July 16 instead of next year, where it had been scheduled for the first weekend of 2022. Sony already has the Kay Cannon-directed Camila Cabello musical Cinderella on July 16. For now, that movie will stay there as Sony monitors overseas markets.
There’s a chance that both Escape Room 2 and Cinderella will stay on that date given that they are targeted at different demographics. Warner Bros also has its HBO Max release Space Jam 2 on July 16 as does Searchlight with its Sundance horror acquisition The Night House.
Previously, January 25: Sony/Screen Gems Escape Room 2 will now open on Jan. 7, 2022.
The sequel to the $155M-plus horror film was recently taken off the theatrical release calendar. Previously Sony had the movie set to open on Dec. 30, 2020, then prior to that, Aug. 14, and then even before that date, April 17.

“Escape Room 2” has moved up its release to July.
The sequel to the 2019 psychological thriller will now debut on July 16, 2021, nearly six months earlier than its planned release date of Jan. 7, 2022.
With the box office beginning to revive after the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s possible that “Escape Room 2” moved up in the schedule to compete within the summer blockbuster timeframe. The first “Escape Room” was a hit at the box office, earning $155 million. “Godzilla vs. Kong” recently raked in the largest box office gross during the pandemic with $31 million, and this past weekend featured a fierce box office battle between “Mortal Kombat” and “Demon Slayer,” signaling to the industry that moviegoers are certainly eager to return to theaters.
The first “Escape Room” film follows six strangers who are brought together to participate in an escape room game, but soon learn they are pawns in a puzzle that could lead to life or death.

As someone who loves slasher movies with every fiber of her being, Bloodline was absolutely 100 percent my jam (as the cool kids would say). Directed by Henry Jacobson, and co-written by Avra Fox-Lerner, Will Honley, and Jacobson, Bloodline follows a well-meaning guidance counselor named Evan (played by the perpetually underrated Seann William Scott), who has a penchant for violence, particularly when it comes to the family ties of his students. And as he and his wife, Lauren (Mariela Garriga), struggle to adjust to becoming parents for the first time, the stress takes its toll, with the counselor taking out his frustrations in some violent and horrific ways.
Bloodline recently celebrated its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2018, and this writer had the opportunity to speak with both Jacobson and Fox-Lerner about their approach to the script, tapping into Seann William Scott’s darker side, collaborating with both Garriga and co-star Dale Dickey,...

The San Diego Comic-Con is mostly known for being a platform for studios to unveil and discuss their new big cinematic projects. This has held true this year, with films such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice garnering significant attention. However, this doesn’t mean that smaller films aren’t able to get their own moment in the spotlight.
One such film is the upcoming horror feature The Hive. The film marks the second feature directorial effort from filmmaker David Yarovesky, who also co-wrote the film with Will Honley. The synopsis is as follows.
A young man suffering from amnesia must dig deep into the far reaches of his mind to remember who he is and save the love of his life before a virus that has infected him takes over.

With hundreds of films released each year, it’s pretty obvious that many scripts never get made — enter the Black List. According to Deadline, in a competitive bidding match, Endgame Entertainment emerged victorious in auction for one of entries on this year’s slate, Flashback.
Written by first time screenwriter — and very recent UCLA graduate — Will Honley, Flashback tells the story of a “former Nasa pilot with amnesia — also the first person to travel the speed of light — realizes he has the ability to travel back in time and along they way rediscovers his love for his wife.” Before the script is optioned to various directors, Honley will have the chance to look over the thing once more for a nice polish.
