Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die hopefully will hit $75M or more in its global debut this weekend, in a marketplace that has suffered from not only lackluster product but lack thereof. Broken out, that’s $40M+ in U.S. and Canada and $35M abroad in a 92% footprint.
Presales for the R-rated fourthquel are behind that of the previous pre-Covid threequel, Bad Boys for Life, which hit a franchise-high stateside opening of $62.5M 3-day and $101M worldwide in early 2020. A few weeks ago, domestic projections were at $50M, but that simmered to $40M of late per several sources; Sony is officially calling the U.S. start at $30M+. Trepidation stems from the offbeat marketplace, which sources believe will pick up over Father’s Day with Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (currently at a $80M-$85M U.S./Canada projection).

Will Smith found himself at the receiving end of flak and hate when he slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards in 2022. Ever since then, his career seems to have backtracked, and he has fallen from grace despite having apologized already. However, seeing the early reviews of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the good times might have finally come back for the actor.

Brought you from the school of “let’s throw everything at the wall and see what sticks”, the latest instalment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise – the first film was released in 1995 – feels less like a real movie and more like an extended TikTok skit. Helmed by Belgian-Moroccan directing duo Adil & Bilall, Bad Boys: Ride or Die reunites Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for the fourth time in the weakest film of the franchise so far.
When their recently murdered police captain gets falsely linked to drug cartels, Miami cops Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) embark on a race against time to clear their old mentor’s name. While Mike is apprehensive about their ability to uncover the conspiracy against their old boss, Marcus has deduced that a recent near-death experience has resulted in him becoming invincible.

At one point in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, one of the principal characters announces, “This is some dysfunctional shit!” With self-aware comments like that, who needs film critics? Not that reviews will matter to the devoted fans of the action-comedy buddy cop franchise that began three decades ago and whose antecedents date as far back as 1974’s Freebie and the Bean and Busting (feel free to cite even earlier ones). It’s a durable concept, even if this fourth installment feels more than a little strained.

It was decently received by critics, with audiences going crazy for it, leading it to finish as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year.

What is the "Bad Boys" franchise, exactly? It's a question worth contemplating, given the unusual history of the series. For one thing, the franchise is nearly 30 years old, and yet the latest entry, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," is only the fourth film in the series. For another, each film to date has had a radically different identity: the original 1995 "Bad Boys" saw Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and director Michael Bay taking their first steps into feature films together, while 2003's "Bad Boys II" is essentially an insane victory lap, with the trio celebrating their stardom while making what amounts to avant garde art in the guise of a summer action movie.
2020's "Bad Boys for Life" saw Bay hand over the directing reins to the young and hungry directing duo of Adil & Bilall (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah), whose work in their native Belgium (especially 2015's "Black") impressed series producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian directing duo behind Bad Boys: Ride or Die, are what people are really talking about when they speak of Michael Bay. In these dark days of anonymous blockbusters with no personality or pop, it is indeed common for people to wax nostalgic about Bay, wishing that Bayhem would one day return to American screens in its full glory.
It’s a weird sentiment though, and not just because Bay hasn’t gone anywhere. But it’s strange because Bay was a byword among film fans of the 2000s and 2010s: shorthand for grotesque messes that emphasized single spectacular shots over basic visual storytelling. When people remember Michael Bay, then, they remember not the actual Bay, but rather the idea of Michael Bay: fun action, striking images, and a sense of humor.

As ancient prophecy foretold, the “Fast & Furious”-ification of the “Bad Boys” franchise is made complete with its fourth installment, which builds on the sordid plot twists of 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life”: an undercover affair! A secret cartel love child who murders Joe Pantoliano! DJ Khaled! This trigger-happy soap opera spins a breakneck and broadly entertaining summer blockbuster about the holy trinity of American traditions: family, corruption, and shooting people. This one even ends with a barbecue.
Vin Diesel’s Wagnerian car saga ran out of gas a long time ago, but the story engine that powered it from the streets to the stratosphere has proven a solid fit for this sunbaked nostalgia act, a ’90s-era property straining to stay relevant in a sick, sad world where Deadpool is a bigger draw than Michael Bay, and Will Smith is less famous for his hits than his slaps.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back policing the streets of Miami in Adil & Bilall’s new sequel. Here’s our Bad Boys: Ride Or Die review.
Playing Mike Lowrey in 1995’s Bad Boys was one of Will Smith’s career-defining roles. He went from the goofball in The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air to a certified action star, and by the time Bad Boys II rolled around in 2003, Smith was one of the biggest names on the planet and Bad Boys became one of the biggest action franchises in modern cinema.
The franchise got a little boost in 2020 with Bad Boys For Life, and returning directors Adil & Bilall try to once again recreate the magic with Bad Boys: Ride Or Die. It’s the fourth instalment in the franchise, and if you weren’t a fan of the first three, Ride Or Die probably won’t convert you.

In 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) says the quiet part out loud about how he and Mike Lowery (Will Smith) had “more days behind them than in front,” and wondered if playing cops and robbers was how they wanted to spend their remaining time. Granted, that film still ended wildly, with Mike fighting his own son and his ex, an actual witch, in a building on fire, but that’s neither here nor there. Adil & Bilall’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, as it turns out, takes the question a bit more seriously, especially after Mike finds himself finally getting hitched to a beautiful woman (Melanie Liburd) and, in the wake of the death of Joe Pantoliano’s Captain Howard, has Anakin Skywalker-esque nightmares about losing her.

It may all be ridiculous if you think about it too much, but this action-comedy franchise still has gas in the tank 30 years after the fortuitous teaming of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence first hit the beat as notorious Miami cops aka the “Bad Boys.”
Perhaps the most action-packed edition yet, Bad Boys: Ride or Die turns the tables on the two title stars as Mike Lawrey (Smith) and partner Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) find themselves on the run and on the other side of the law. Their beloved late Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano), who died at the hands of vicious cartel member Armando Aretas (Jacob Scipio) in the previous film, 2020’s Bad Boys for Life, is accused posthumously of being on the take from the cartels. The evidence seems undeniable and is upheld by Captain Rita (Paola Núñez), the new chief of the Advanced Miami Metro Operations, a former girlfriend...

Whatcha gonna do when “Bad Boys” comes for the box office? If you’re a theater owner, the answer is hopefully sell some tickets.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth installment in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, is targeting $30 million to $50 million from 3,850 theaters in its first weekend of release. As that cavernous range suggests, estimates vary greatly depending on whom you ask. Sony has offered the soft $30 million figure, while rivals and independent tracking services believe the $45 million to $50 million range is more likely.
Adding to opening-weekend ambiguity: The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars. Have audiences soured on Smith or will they forgive and forget in favor of another “Bad Boys” reunion?...

Now, the directors of Batgirl are showing their support for a fellow Wbd movie that was left hovering over a cliff’s edge.

Despite some quantity-over-quality issues during the Multiverse Saga, the MCU continues to draw massive interest from moviegoers and comic book fans. That goes some way in explaining why we get so many rumours about its future and we're back today with another roundup.
We start with information shared by Jeff Sneider. He chimes in on some recent rumblings about the MCU, including that latest report about Captain America: Brave New World needing only 22 days of reshoots (read more about that here).
Sneider believes more additional photography is planned for later in 2024 and notes, "From what I’ve heard, it's going to take a lot more than 22 days to fix everything that’s wrong with this movie."
Another supposedly troubled MCU project is Blade. First announced at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the reboot has been through multiple writers and directors and, as we write this, still seems no closer to happening.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence arrived at the Los Angeles premiere of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” on Thursday night atop a double decker bus, where they were greeted by cheering fans lining Hollywood Boulevard. “It’s not just here,” Smith told Variety about the fans who continued to support him, even when his reputation faltered in the wake of the Oscars slap. “It’s all over the world. Every time we step out together, it’s nothing but love. I think the fans are ride or die also.”
Inside the Tcl Chinese Theatre, the actor thanked Sony Pictures Entertainment chairperson Tom Rothman for sticking by him. “Tom Rothman is a real life ride or die,” he said. “Tom Rothman was messing with me when nobody was messing with me. That is my dude.”

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence showed up to the Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiere in Hollywood on Thursday ready to put on a show.
Arriving on top of a double-decker bus, Smith quickly took on the role of hype man, yelling into a microphone, “When I say, ‘bad,’ you say ‘boys'” to the crowd gathered on Hollywood Boulevard. He and Lawrence, reuniting for their fourth Bad Boys film, soaked up the fan love for the franchise and told The Hollywood Reporter that after nearly 30 years of playing these characters, they’re not quite ready to hang it up.
Although many long-running franchises have been rebooted with younger casts or passed the baton on to the next generation, Smith insisted, “We might have one more in us before we hand it off but we’ve got a lot of young seeds in there.” Added Lawrence, “The back ain’t went out quite yet,...

May ended up being more than a bit of a letdown at the box office, yet the summer movie season continues on with three more major franchise sequels (or prequels) and a few other attempts at variety. Read on for Gold Derby’s June 2024 box office preview.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney/Pixar – June 14)
Disney and Pixar Animation are hoping to make a comeback with this sequel to Pete Docter‘s 2015 Oscar-winning animated blockbuster, which grossed $850.6 million worldwide after opening with $90.4 million domestically. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a number of new emotions including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, Envy voiced by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri, Paul Walter Hauser voicing Embarassment, and Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (because it’s a French emotion). Mindy Kaling‘s Disgust has also been recast with Liza Lapira from “The Equalizer.” In the “before times,” there was little reason for this not to open with more than $100 million,...

We have an update on Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' search for a director to take the helm of Spider-Man 4, and it seems Ms. Marvel and Bad Boys: Ride or Die filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah may indeed be in contention to land the gig.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, El Arbi and Fallah - who infamously helmed the Batgirl movie Warner Bros. decided to scrap as a tax write-off - are "in the mix" to direct the Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up, but it sounds like there are other candidates.
Richtman also indicates that directors with "a current connection with Sony and Marvel Studios" are being looked at, and the studios may also be focused on enlisting "an indie director like they did with Jon Watts."

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.
Directed once again by "Bad Boys for Life" duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the upcoming fourth entry in the "Bad Boys" franchise is going to easily top the charts on its opening weekend with a debut in the $48 to $58 million range, per Box Office Theory. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die has received clearance to roll into China. The Sony Pictures film will hit Chinese cinemas on June 22, according to both the studio and local press reports in Beijing. The film opens theatrically in North America on June 7.
The new film is the fourth installment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise, following Bad Boys for Life (2020), which revived the movie series after a 17-year hiatus and was a worldwide hit with $426 million in total ticket revenue. Bad Boys for Life earned just $3 million in China, but it was released there amid the challenges of the pandemic.
Bad Boys 4 is helmed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian duo who infamously had their $90 million Batgirl feature for Max shelved for a tax break by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.

The Bad Boys are back, baby! There have been some early screenings of Bad Boys: Ride or Die in the past weeks, and the first reactions on social media are quite positive. Our own Chris Bumbray caught a screening last week and was a big fan, saying the sequel was just as much fun as the last movie.
We got an early look at #BadBoysRideOrDie last week, and it’s just about as much fun as Bad Boys For Life. It’s a total blast, with some great action and a terrific role for Jacob Scipio, who has some really great action scenes.

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

When Marvel Studios teamed with Sony Pictures and agreed to share Spider-Man, the decision was quickly made to focus on villains the web-slinger hadn't faced on screen before.
Spider-Man: Homecoming featured Shocker and The Vulture and even set the stage for Scorpion's eventual debut by introducing Mac Gargan. Spider-Man: Far From Home shifted focus to Mysterio, only for Spider-Man: No Way Home to pit Tom Holland's Peter Parker against the baddies from previous Spider-Man movies.
The MCU hero battled Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and The Lizard; however, as exciting as that was for fans, it seemingly closed the door on new versions of those baddies appearing on Earth-616.
Heck, Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn even confirmed his Variant doesn't exist on that world!

‘Spider-Man 4’ is one of MCU’s most anticipated projects in the works. Tom Holland confirmed he’s returning as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya as Mj. Besides these details, much about the movie remains unknown.
Earlier reports suggested it would explore the street-level stories in the MCU, but recent reports indicate otherwise.
Various directors have been linked to helming the movie, including Jon Watts, who withdrew due to other commitments, Sam Raimi, Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, and others.
Among the rumored names were Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, the directors of the canceled Dceu ‘Batgirl’ movie. In a recent interview with Arabic Mdc, Fallah was asked about the rumors. He politely responded, “I can’t discuss that.”

‘Spider-Man 4’ is one of the most exciting projects that MCU currently has in development. The movie has been in development for quite some time now, Tom Holland confirmed a while ago that he is reprising his role as Peter Parker along with Zendaya who will be back as Mj.
Aside from that, there’s little we know about the movie. Some reports stated that ‘Spider-Man 4’ will focus more on the street-level stories within the MCU, and now the latest reports state something else entirely.
Several names have been mentioned in the context of directing the movie starting with Jon Watts, who eventually pulled out due to involvement with other projects, Sam Raimi, Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, and several others.
One of the rumored names were Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, the directors of the ill-fated Dceu ‘Batgirl’ movie. In a recent interview with Arabic Mdc, Fallah was questioned about the recent rumors.

The well-oiled hit content-producing machine famed as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has of late seen a slew of hits and misses at the box office. Following Avengers: Endgame, the expectations from the Kevin Feige-led studio have reached sky-high. However, it has yet to meet those and churn out a live-action project for the big screens of that scale and hype.

Rumours about who will direct Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with Ms. Marvel and Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah among those supposedly in the mix.
Jon Watts helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home but appears ready to move on from the web-slinger. Despite also leaving The Fantastic Four, Kevin Feige is said to be keen on Watts returning to the MCU for another project.
Appearing at a recent screening event for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fallah was asked to speak on the Spider-Man 4 rumours and his reaction (refusing to answer the question while saying "I can't talk about that...") may be telling.
While we're not suggesting this has confirmed his and El Arbi's involvement with the movie, it seems highly likely the duo are likely contenders.

Earlier this week, we learned that Adam Wingard will no longer direct the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sequel. He previously helmed Godzilla vs. Kong, but cut his teeth on smaller action movies like You're Next and The Guest.
Today, we bring word from scooper @MyTimeToShineH that Wingard is in the running to helm Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
His potential hiring would almost certainly divide opinions, though it's worth noting that Wingard currently has plans to helm a new action thriller, Onslaught, which is prepping for a fall shoot. That alone likely takes him out of the running.
The director also seems far more interested in finally bringing Thundercats to the big screen.

When Bad Boys for Life came out in January 2020, it ended a 17-year wait for the third film in the franchise, which launched in 1995 with Bad Boys and continued in 2003 with Bad Boys II. It’s only taken a relatively brief four-plus years to get the latest entry in the series, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, to the screen—but it’s been a tumultuous stretch, to say the least.
“The hope is definitely that everything will be a little bit smoother from now on,” co-director Adil El Arbi, returning to the franchise with directing partner Bilall Fallah after taking over for Michael Bay on the third film, tells Den of Geek ahead of the movie’s arrival. “Because also in those last four years, five years, we have learned so much.

"The Godfather Part III," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Jaws 3-D," "Superman III" ... there are tons of examples of film trilogies that feature a dramatic drop in quality in their third entries. "Beverly Hills Cop III" definitely belongs on that list; the 1994 stinker, directed by John Landis, plopped Eddie Murphy's beloved fish-out-of-water Detroit cop character Axel Foley back in Beverly Hills, but this time, it takes place largely in a ... theme park. Thanks to scripting issues and scheduling problems, the film also broke up the beloved trio of Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold, the latter of whom play Taggart and Rosewood, the Beverly Hills police officers who go from being Axel's pesky babysitters in the first movie to lifelong pals and de facto partners in the second. Ashton dodged a bullet by not appearing in the third film at all, and that movie's lousy script didn't do...

With the San Diego Comic-Con and D23 fast approaching, it surely won't be too much longer until we get a long-overdue slate update from Marvel Studios.
Some changes are bound to have been made following a return to quality over quantity and there are still big gaps in the Multiverse Saga which need to be filled.
It's looking like Young Avengers will be one of those projects and, according to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, that will be led by Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop/Hawkeye and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. The Marvels' post-credits scene set the stage for them to take charge of the team, so we're not exactly shocked.
As for who will join them, your guess is as good as ours...there are plenty of potential candidates, though.
Next up is Spider-Man 4. Earlier today, we told you that Venom is expected to play a minor role in the movie.
Marvel. Spider-Man 4 is one of Marvel Studios' most highly anticipated movies but, as we write this, it has no release date or even a confirmed director.
According to Jeff Sneider, Marvel and Sony Pictures are developing a new trilogy together, with the intention being for one director - or a directing duo - to work on all three instalments.

Marvel Studios brought the famous friendly neighborhood web-slinger over to the MCU back in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. Ever since then, it has been one magnificent ride with some shocking yet exhilarating multi-versal events. While Tom Holland aced the elements required to play Peter Parker and Spider-Man, Marvel Studios did equally well when it came to storyline, narrative, and action sequences.
