Barking Dogs Never Bite
Slamdance Film Festival has announced it is going to move to Los Angeles from Utah in 2025.
The festival, which started off on the fringes of Sundance Film Festival in 1995, has since grown to a force to be reckoned with in its own right, with films getting their break there including Christopher Nolan's Following, Bong Joon-ho's Barking Dogs Never Bite and Matt Johnson's The Dirties.
It has traditionally run alongside Sundance in Park City, Utah, this year noticeably taking on a much more central and larger venue for its screenings. The switch saw an 18% rise in ticket sales. The festival said in a statement that the LA move will "allow it to expand its mission of supporting truly independent filmmakers" while giving better accessibility to attendees.
Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter Founder and president of the festival Peter Baxter said: “Slamdance is coming to Los Angeles!

“L.A. has come of age — I’ve heard that so many times in the past decade. It has always sounded provincial and defensive,” says Dean Valentine, co-founder of the Felix Art Fair. “We’re one of the four or five global capitals of contemporary art. We always had the artists. But now we have the museums, the galleries, the collectors and, obviously, the art fairs.”
And art fair season in L.A. is back with a bang. This year, the gold standard, the Frieze Los Angeles art fair, is at the Santa Monica Airport for the second straight year. Frieze kicks off with an invitation-only preview Thursday, Feb. 29 and is open to the general public March 1-3.
Steered by Frieze director of the Americas Christine Messineo, the fair will feature booths from more than 95 galleries from around the world. Highlights include new paintings by Sam McKinniss, known for his...

The films of Canadian director Kazik Radwanski are freedom in its purest form, or the purest this particular medium can contain. Being the opposite of prescriptive, they sculpt themselves according to interpersonal dynamics that can otherwise be invisible, and by doing so, give shape to parallel emotional worlds, extensions of a protagonist’s psyche. That goes for Derek (Derek Bogart), the impulsive lead in Tower (2012), sleep-deprived gamer dad Erwin (Erwin van Cotthem) from How Heavy This Hammer (2015), and for the chaotic Anne (Deragh Campbell) whose quarter-life crisis makes a delightful whirlpool out of Anne at 13,000 ft (2019). The second collaboration between Radwanski, Campbell, and Matt Johnson following Anne premieres at the Encounters section of this year’s Berlinale and it is humbly named Matt and Mara.
Just as Mara (Campbell) is about to welcome students to her poetry class, she spots her old friend Matt (Matt Johnson) in the corridor. Her...

In The Heirloom, a couple facing lockdown decide to adopt a pet. It’s wintertime in Toronto, and Eric and Allie are chipping away at their Covid-restricted lives. Eric, a screenwriter, has hit a block. Together they goof around until Allie eventually asks the eternal question: why don’t we get a dog? Heirloom is the first feature of Ben Petrie, who is credited as director, editor, writer, and producer. He also stars in the film alongside his longtime creative partner Grace Glowicki, who also co-produced it––making The Heirloom not quite a Petrie-dish. What’s more, they have to share the screen with Milly, an auburn whippet rescue dog from the Dominican Republic whose cautious eyes and darting movements often steal the show.
Much like Milly, Petrie’s film works itself into a charmingly anxious mood. With few distractions, and some reason to procrastinate, Eric and Allie begin obsessing.

The Bricklayer Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Nina Dobrev, Tim Blake Nelson, Ilfenesh Hadera, Clifton Collins Jr.
Director: Renny Harlin
Writer: Hanna Weg, Matt Johnson
Review of Harlin’s Action Thriller “The Bricklayer” Does it Live Up to the Promise of a Gripping Espionage Tale?(Photo Credit –IMDb)
What’s Good: Harlin’s dynamic direction and Eckhart’s compelling lead performance elevate the film, delivering thrilling action with well-choreographed fight sequences. The movie’s brisk pace, stunning Greek settings, and a mix of archetypal characters create an engaging experience. The cinematography by Matti Eerikainen and other technical aspects showcase expertise, making it visually appealing.
What’s Bad: Despite its strengths, “The Bricklayer” succumbs to some conventional spy tropes and noticeable conveniences in the plot. Overtly cheesy dialogues hinder the impact, and the central conflict fails to establish a palpable sense of peril, falling short of elevating the stakes required for the genre.

Former President Barack Obama recently took to social media to reveal his favorite movies of 2023. The politician-turned-producer shared a list of 13 films that showcased a mix of productions from his own company, Higher Ground, as well as other notable works.
Obama first highlighted three movies produced by Higher Ground: the civil rights biopic Rustin, which features Colman Domingo; the apocalypse film Leave the World Behind, which stars Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali and the music documentary American Symphony, which showcases Jon Batiste. Obama acknowledged his bias that these films were produced by his company but emphasized that they were genuinely among the best movies he watched this year.
In addition to the Higher Ground productions, Obama listed ten other films that caught his attention. These included Alexander Payne‘s dramedy set in a boarding school, The Holdovers, Matt Johnson‘s corporate biopic, BlackBerry, Christopher Nolan‘s historical epic, Oppenheimer, and Cord Jefferson‘s satirical offering,...

Glenn Howerton as Jim Balsillie in Blackberry
One of the independent hits of the year, sadly overlooked by the major awards so far but doing well in smaller ones, BlackBerry turns the story behind the development of the iconic phone into a gripping drama with comedy and thriller elements. Having previously discussed it with director Matt Johnson and (briefly) with Michael Ironside, whose contribution is fairly brief but makes quite an impact, I was pleased to get the opportunity to chat to star Glenn Howerton. His supporting turn as Jim Balsillie has received well deserved praise, and at the press conference he revealed that he got so fully into character that when he relaxed at the end of the shoot his co-stars were surprised to discover that he was actually friendly.
“The way this movie premiered in March and people are still talking about it, it's incredible,” he says. “I'm pretty thunderstruck by the.

Rotten Tomatoes and the Academy Awards don’t often go hand in hand. In fact, the Rt scores of Best Picture nominees/winners are a mixed bag. “Parasite” won Best Picture with a Rt score of 99% while “Green Book” emerged victorious with a score of just 77%. The site dishes out percentage scores to movie’s based on the film’s collection of critical reviews. The higher the score, the better the movie. Supposedly.
But, that’s not how it always work in tandem with the Oscars. For instance, “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “Roma” all scored 96% but lost Best Picture to “Green Book.” Perhaps, if the Oscars listened to Rotten Tomatoes more, things would go a little more smoothly? Probably not but, just for fun, let’s pretend that Rotten Tomatoes are in charge of this year’s Academy Awards.

And so, another year is in the books, with 2023, the year of Barbenheimer now ending. It was a dramatic one for entertainment, with shelved movies, surprising hits and misses and dual strikes that brought the industry to a standstill for months. Nevertheless, there were plenty of great films, so here’s JoBlo’s official top 10 for the year. Before we start, there are a few honourable mentions to get out of the way. Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One was a surprising box office disappointment, to the extent that the next film is set to drop Dead Reckoning from the title, but it was still an expertly assembled action film with some of the best stuntwork and style of the year. I also thoroughly enjoyed Creed III and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, with both just falling a tad short of making my top 10. At the same time, other films like Bradley Cooper’s Maestro,...

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.
1. BlackBerry
Matt Johnson’s drama about the meteoric rise of the world’s first smartphone, before its competitive collapse, bowed in Berlin.

As T.E. Lawrence exclaims in "Lawrence of Arabia": "Big things have small beginnings." That axiom holds generally true of most things in life, of course, yet it curiously applies to a great number of films released in 2023.
Over the last decade and change, we've been privy to many "big things" in American cinema; such trends as the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its brethren have ensured that world-ending stakes (or larger) became the order of the day on screen, and such stakes were allowed to rise given their films' not-so-humble beginnings (for example: Tony Stark in "Iron Man" begins as a billionaire playboy military weapons manufacturer).
While there has never been a complete end to a more modest style of storytelling focused on average, everyday characters, the prevalence of the superhero film and the need for Hollywood to get butts in seats as screens dwindle meant that...

Cliffhanger producer and The Legend of Hercules director Renny Harlin is back with another hard-hitting action film that aims to hit you like a ton of bricks. Hailing from Vertical, The Bricklayer stars Aaron Eckhart and revolves around a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations turn against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) – their most brilliant and rebellious operative – out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.
Bringing pain alongside Steve to those who deserve it most is Nina Dobrev’s Kate, a young, no-nonsense agent with a penchant for violence and a mean trigger finger. Clifton Collins Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, and Ilfenesh Hadera also star as primary cast members.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with BlackBerry, a biopic of sorts charting the rise and fall of the Og smartphone.
Glenn Howerton, who is up for a Gotham Award tonight, and Jay Baruchel star in the pic written by Matt Johnson and Matthew Miller sourced from Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff’s book Losing the Signal.
Johnson directed BlackBerry, which scored strong reviews after its world premiere over the winter at the Berlin Film Festival. IFC Films released it in theaters in May.
The script centers on Mike Lazaridis (Baruchel) and Jim Balsillie (Howerton), who founded the Canadian company Research in Motion company to create and market the phone, among the first to have a keyboard and internet access. It became a power symbol in the hands of movers and shakers from Wall Street to Hollywood — until it wasn’t.

Intellectual property — the books, films, characters and properties that get butts into seats — has long been a cornerstone of Hollywood moviemaking. But many of this year’s films have drawn from less likely, though perhaps inevitable, sources of inspiration: products and brands. Movies ranging from “Barbie” and “Air” to “BlackBerry” and Michael Mann’s upcoming “Ferrari” all to one extent or another leverage the namesake of the object, or the business associated with it in the name of attracting audiences to theaters.
This parade of product-driven titles seems to mark an inflection point in a crowded entertainment landscape where consumer recognizability has become one of the most important (or seemingly only) factor when deciding which movies to make.
At their best, these movies hit it out of the park with critics and moviegoers, as in the case with “Barbie,” the biggest movie of the year, or gain critical heat, as with “Air,...

Glenn Howerton has never won an Emmy. He’s never been nominated for an Emmy. To anyone who invested in the awards race — or anyone who’s seen more than a few episodes of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — these facts are both obvious and outrageous. Rob McElhenney’s landmark FX sitcom has been infamously snubbed by the Television Academy throughout its record-breaking run. In 16 seasons, the series has been recognized three times, and each time, it was in the same category: Stunt Coordination.
No disrespect to Marc Scizak’s worthy accomplishments (and credit to the Emmys for honoring stunt work in the first place), but “It’s Always Sunny” deserves so much more. Where’s the Best Comedy Series nod for TV’s longest-running live-action sitcom? Where are the writing nominations for scripts like these? And where’s Glenn Howerton’s G.D. trophy?!
Well, this might be his year.

With director and co-writer Matt Johnson’s feature film Blackberry getting an extended, limited series treatment on AMC this week, the entertainment world is abuzz with Oscar (and now Emmy) talk about the film’s scene-stealing co-star, Glenn Howerton. As real-life financial bulldog and eventual Blackberry CEO Jim Balsillie, Howerton shaved the religiously maintained mane of hair he’s sported as narcissistic Dennis Reynolds for 16 seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, that actorly sacrifice just one indicator of how the perennially ambitious, often typecast actor viewed Balsillie as the role destined to bring Howerton a measure of the success he’s always sought.

One of the most acclaimed movies of the year is being turned into a miniseries by AMC. For better or worse, "BlackBerry," which was released in theaters back in May, is going to be repurposed as a three-episode TV show that will air on the cable network next month across three nights. It will also be streaming on AMC+. While this opens the movie up to a larger audience, it's going to be presented in a way that was not originally intended, making this something of a bittersweet situation. More on that in a second. For now, let's get into the specifics.
Billed as a "special television event," the miniseries version of director Matt Johnson's "BlackBerry" includes 16 minutes of new footage. It will air in three parts on November 13, 14, and 15 on AMC, with all three episodes available on AMC+ on November 13. Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks,...

Among the best movies to kick off the summer movie season this past May, Matt Johnson’s Berlinale and SXSW selection BlackBerry stars Jay Baruchel, Glenn Howerton, and Johnson in the story of the men that charted the course of the spectacular rise and catastrophic demise of the world’s first smartphone. Backed by CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), as part of the film’s financing, Johnson was contracted to deliver the project in three parts to air on the Canadian station, along with a theatrical release. Now that expanded version will also get a U.S. release as AMC have announced a special three-part television event. Expanding from the original film’s two-hour runtime, this new version features 16 minutes of never-before-seen footage. On AMC, BlackBerry will air in three parts on November 13, 14 and 15. Blackberry, the comedy-drama movie starring Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton as the two men responsible for the launch of the world’s first smartphone, will premiere on AMC next month, but there’s a twist. AMC announced today that Blackberry has been transformed into a three-part limited series.

The feature-film version of Blackberry spanned two hours, but the series will include additional never-before-seen footage to stretch across three 60-minute episodes. While this may be an odd development, it could lead to more people watching the story. Although Blackberry received rave reviews from critics (98% on Rotten Tomatoes), it didn’t exactly blow up at the box office, grossing just $2.8 million worldwide on the $5 million budget.

Matt Johnson’s boisterous drama about the rise and fall of the mobile – and the Canadian nerds who created it – diverges refreshingly from the usual arc of product success stories
Tech years are like dog years. Less than a decade and a half has passed since the early 2010 sheyday of the BlackBerry smartphone. But in the accelerated world of technology, the once coveted accessory of any self-respecting business bigshot or self-promoting celebrity (Paris Hilton used to carry five of them at a time) now might as well be an ancient relic.
By any standard, the BlackBerry story is a wild ride – going from a prototype cobbled together from bits of a pocket calculator to a product so addictive that it was nicknamed the CrackBerry; from a share of the US mobile phone market that was at one point estimated at about 40% to virtual oblivion in the space of just a few years.

Veteran executive Dan Cohen will be on the ground in Toronto this year in a new position, as the head of the recently revived Paramount studio label Republic Pictures. Republic, which was shuttered in 1967 after releasing films from John Wayne and Orson Welles, has been brought back as an acquisitions play already picking up action thriller Air Force One Down.
