Paranormal Activity 4
Stars: Brady Allen, Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively | Written by Christopher Landon | Directed by Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman
I loved the first Paranormal Activity film. I remember watching it with terrified friends in a shrieking cinema and then later subjecting flatmates to it. My girlfriend to this day is guaranteed a sleepless night if you so much as mention Paranormal Activity during an evening. In preparation for Paranormal Activity 4, I caught up with the sequels. I found them far from as exciting as the original though there was stuff to enjoy in both of them – PA2 perhaps has more pointed scares than the first and I enjoyed the period setting of PA3; surely all horror films should be set in their eighties heyday? What was lacking was the enjoyment of watching them as part of an audience.

Say what you will about the "Paranormal Activity" series, but there's absolutely no denying that director, writer, producer, and creator of the franchise Oren Peli not only crafted one of the most lucrative horror film series in recent memory, but he also helped paved the way for the found-footage phenomenon that currently graces the silver screen a few times every year. The franchise's latest film, "Paranormal Activity 4" (out on Blu-ray and DVD today) takes the terrifying series in a new direction and provides a fresh take on what could easily have become a stale plate of sequels.
MTV recently sat down with Peli to discuss the "Paranormal Activity" series, his rigorous casting process, and the director's favorite horror movies.
Humble Beginnings
MTV: You started this series back in 2007, on the cheap, and it has become an enormous hit. Did you imagine the enormity of it way back then?...

Supernatural sequel 'Paranormal Activity 4' will be arriving on a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with UltraViolet and a Digital Copy across the Us from 29 January. In keeping with the rapid way in which the franchise is produced and released it was inevitable that the DVD roll out would be quick and it looks to include some pretty juicy extras to check out. The combo pack in particular will include nearly 30 minutes of new found footage plus the option of watching the original theatrical version and also the unrated version. The fourth installment comes from returning directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost ('Catfish') and stars Kathryn Newton ('Bad Teacher'), Matt Shively ('True Jackson, VP'), Brady Allen and once again the delightful Katie Featherston. Check out the combo pack artwork below....

He may only be seven years old, but up-and-coming child actor Aiden Lovekamp still managed to deliver a majorly creepy performance as youngster Wyatt in Paranormal Activity 4, which premiered last month in theaters everywhere.
In this third sequel we meet Wyatt and his family as they deal with a strange neighbor boy named Robbie (Brady Allen), who comes to stay with them after his mom is rushed to the hospital. Once Robbie arrives, strange things begin happening, which has sinister effects on everyone around him, including Wyatt.
Dread Central recently had the chance to chat with the precocious actor about his experiences working on Pa 4 and heard more about how he got involved, whether or not he was scared at all while making the movie, and what's coming up next with him.
Check out our exclusive Q&A with Lovekamp below!

* there are spoilers here. Directors: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Writers: Christopher Landon and Chad Feehan. Cast: Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton and Matt Shively. The social experiment is back and Paranormal Activity 4 is not worth the price of an IMAX ticket. Audiences with any interest with the series are better off waiting for a regular presentation or a video-on-demand release. Nothing about the movie was even reported to be filmed with the square-shaped camera format. At least at home, the only shocker is in knowing that money has been saved. The tale is with the Nelson family, who take a mysterious boy, Robbie (Brady Allen), from across the street in. His mother is as always busy and often leaves the child alone, strangly. Not only is this neighbour a bad parent but also she has had an undisclosed incident that summons an ambulance over to take her away. With her gone,...

It's October, and there are no more Saw movies to occupy our ritualistic annual watching of horror movies, but we do have the Paranormal Activity franchise. The franchise up to this point has certainly been intriguing, and it turned the horror genre on its head in 2007 when it unexpectedly scared audiences in droves. The simplistic story has evolved into an intriguing tale of demonic possession that dates back to the childhood years of the people involved, specifically Katie (Katie Featherston) and her nephew Hunter. Paranormal Activity 4 at first doesn't seem like it will have anything to do with the previous three movies. It takes place in a different city and years after the events of the second film (the third film was a prequel).
It begins innocently enough, as these films often do. Alex (Kathryn Newton) is your typical 15-year-old teenage girl. She has fun filming everything with her...

New Paranormal Activity 4 delivered mediocre suspense, thrills and a ridiculous ending. Paramount Pictures released their new horror/thriller flick "Paranormal Activity 4" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it,and thought this was quite possibly the worst one yet. While it did serve up some suspense,it took them quite a while to get around to it,and once it did,it was too predictable and mediocre. The ending was very ridiculous, and I was really hoping they wouldn't do that. It stars: Katie Featherston,Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively,Brady Allen, and Tommy Miranda. The new flick takes place five years after Paranormal Activity 2, which ended with Katie kidnapping Hunter. From there, we see a happy go-lucky family that consisted of this very cute, young, blonde chick named Alice, her adopted little brother named Wyattmand her parents. Eventually,, a weird little kid named Robbie comes lurking around Alice's house,...

Chicago – Following the first “Paranormal Activity” in 2007, which is most profitable film of all time based on return on investment, filmmakers Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Henry Joost have made a killing for Paramount Pictures.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
But with one movie a year since the second one in 2010, these low-budget films with no-name actors are showing fatigue and that they are overstaying their generous welcome with Friday’s release of “Paranormal Activity 4”.
The only novel plot device used in the fourth film is the Xbox Kinect from Microsoft. When turned on and used normally, the Kinect just makes your body the game controller by tracking your movements. But while viewing the room through a night-vision camera in green lighting, you apparently see the countless projection-tracking dots.
Read Adam Fendelman’s full review of “Paranormal Activity 4”.
That’s then used in the film, of course, to pick up paranormal Boogeymen.

The Paranormal Activity series has been highly divisive since the beginning. Singlehandedly responsible for the rise and recent death of the found footage genre, it has been praised by critics for its suspenseful sensory assault, and decried by audiences for its lack of scares. Since these films were so easy to make on such a small budget and proved they had an audience, Hollywood latched and started producing yearly sequels like their wallets depended on it.
Neither of the two sequels thus far have lived up to the original in terms of pure suspense and terror, and neither left audiences in as large of a fervor as the first did. The plot stringing the series along has also been progressing at a snail’s pace, making sure to only reveal new information right as all of the demon murder happens so that suckers will keep coming back for more. Editor’s note: With Paranormal Activity 4 now officially released in theaters, here is a re-run of our Fantastic Fest review, originally published on September 27, 2012. Although the Ff version was a work-in-progress, as far as we can tell the final cut is mostly the same save for a slight reordering of some scenes near the end. Another set of cameras and another hopeless family that can’t help themselves. They can’t rid themselves of a demonic presence that is purposefully in their home for a reason, nor can they keep from being compelled to record everything that happens. For a franchise that utilizes the “found footage” form of filmmaking, it still isn’t quite clear yet who has found all of this footage to show us, or why they’ve chosen to sift through two decades’ worth of recordings and cleanly edit it all together and make movies out of them. I...

All the activity has led to this – the fourth instalment in the Paranormal Activity series that began with the little indie that could, which transformed into a multi-million dollar franchise.
Paranormal Activity 4 acts as a sequel to Paranormal Activity 2, taking place 5 years later in November, 2011 and sees teenager Alex (Kathryn Newton) start to experience some strange stuff after the arrival of Robbie (Brady Allen), who has just moved in across the street from her – so what’s this all mean for Alex and her family? What is the activity building to? And where in the world are Katie and Hunter?
I love what these films can be, which is haunted house flicks that are terrific fun and akin to something like going on a roller coaster, with the audience strapping themselves in and going along for the ride and all its turns, twists and surprises.

Paranormal Activity 4 Directed by: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman Written by: Christopher Landon (screenplay), Chad Feehan (story) Starring: Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively, Brady Allen Back in 2009, when Paramount decided to debut Oren Peli's no budget indie film Paranormal Activity in select theatres, I don't think anyone expected it to turn into a six hundred million dollar movie franchise. And yet, in retrospect, it makes complete sense. In this age of instant gratification, the movie boils horror down to its bare essentials, loosely tying together a series of increasingly tense scenes with the only the faintest hint of a plot. The movie quite literally fast-forwards to the good parts, mainlining visceral thrills and chills while skipping past all the filler. Three years later, we've already arrived at a fourth installment. The low budget nature of the series allows for an extremely quick turnaround time, making it all...

After three flicks, the trailer for "Paranormal Activity 4" promised everything "has led to this." So ... was the end satisfying? Well, you'll have to wait until the inevitable Part 5 to find out. While the fourth flick in the annual Halloween franchise will scare up big box office this weekend, it's the weakest entry so far.The premise revolves around teenage girl Alex (Kathryn Newton) and young brother Wyatt (Aiden Lovekamp), who start experiencing the films' trademark bumps in the night when their mom offers to watch Robbie (Brady Allen) ... the young, creepy kid next door whose mother is hospitalized. From there, we get the usual roller coaster of nightly suspense scenes, floating objects, apparitions and loud, jump scares. While the buildup is starting to get stale, this entry does a good job of modernizing the franchise. Laptop webcams, iPhones and even the Xbox Kinect's tracking dots all provide new, tech-savvy scares.

There was always a very, very big problem when it came to making sequels for the 2008 sleeper hit Paranormal Activity. What made the original so compelling in the first place was how low-key the horror was. On the other hand, every sequel has to heighten the stakes of what came before it. A good sequel would have to balance these two requirements almost perfectly. The first two sequels managed this, but Paranormal Activity 4 is the inevitable film in the series that just doesn't quite hit it.
This time, the terrorized house is occupied by Alex (Kathryn Newton), a teenage girl whose family includes two parents and a younger brother Wyatt (Aiden Lovekamp). One night, a neglected neighbor boy named Robbie (Brady Allen) turns up. When...

Paramount's marketing of Paranormal Activity 4 says "the activity has led to this". Fortunately, the film lives up to this promise in an installment that serves more as a direct sequel to the second film while using elements of the third to build its back-story. In a lot of ways, Paranormal Activity 4 closes a trilogy, with Paranormal Activity 3 serving as the outcast and most likely where the inevitable Paranormal Activity 5 will pick-up. The film opens, recapping the events in Paranormal Activity 2 wherein Katie (Katie Featherston) is seen killing her sister and kidnapping young Hunter. Those events took place in Carlsbad, California in 2006 and we're reminded Katie and Hunter haven't been seen since. The story jumps five years later to Henderson, Nevada where a new family is introduced including Alex (Kathryn Newton), her younger brother Wyatt and her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively). They soon become more acquainted with...

The first “Paranormal Activity” was entirely new territory. In the second, the plot thickened and scares still felt fresh. By the time we hit the third, we were well aware of what was coming, but quality character development kept us firmly invested. It’s October again so I guess it’s time for another film in the low-budget franchise that keeps on giving and giving (well, to Paramount Pictures at least).
The phenomenally successful and ingeniously devised Paranormal Activity series is a piece of Indie film royalty. It generates huge piles of delicious money on extremely meagre budgets and despite each instalment being an obvious cash-in on the phenomenally shrewd first, it’s still a series that somehow seems to maintain its integrity. Which is odd, because I’ve never taken much of a shine to it.
You already know the set-up. We’ve got another family, another house, another creepy kid and another whole heap of steadily escalating and carefully crafted paranormal activity. ‘So it’s the same as all the others then’ I hear you say. Why yes it is. It really is.
The film plods on through the first...

The "Paranormal Activity" movies are credited with taking the terror out of art-directed dungeons and dilapidated bathrooms and putting it right smack dab in the middle of our bedrooms. The "Saw" series raised a white flag of surrender after "Paranormal Activity" took most of the Halloween box office dollars in 2009, bringing an end to Jigsaw's legacy and returning us to the land of lo-fi horror.
Since then, the "Paranormal" series has become something of its own "Saw"-sized franchise, with the fourth installment set to hit theaters this Friday. Somewhat unfortunately (though probably inevitably), the more this decades-spanning haunted house tale expands and explains its increasingly silly mythology, the less scary and interesting it becomes — though we have to give props to the producers for maintaining the low-budget, "found footage" aesthetic that the first film incorporated so brilliantly.

React, react! It’s time to get scared! We have two completely new TV spots for Paranormal Activity 4 movie which opens this month! This month? As you see in our title, this time we have one spooky TV spot (the second one) which includes some reactions from cinema. Have fun!
And now some official things about this supernatural thriller (I still believe it’s a horror). It comes from Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, and is the fourth film in the well-known supernatural franchise.
This time, we’re in 2011, which means – five years after Katie killed her boyfriend Micah, sister Kristi, her husband Daniel and took their baby, Hunter (now named Robbie). Story follows Alice and her mom, experiencing weird stuff since the new neighbors (Katie and Robbie) moved in the town.

Paranormal Activity 4 brings the latest instalment in the immensely successful franchise to the big screen next week, and with its release so close, the film has put out a brilliant new audience reaction teaser to give us an idea of what we have in store for us.
When it comes to horror films, audience reaction videos are utterly hilarious, and this latest does not disappoint, with the usual hiding behind hands/friends/eyelids, open mouths, and all-around general screaming in the theatre.
It promises to be a lot of fun.
Katie Featherston reprises her role from the first three films, starring alongside Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively, and Brady Allen.
Co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish, Paranormal Activity 3) are back behind the cameras once more, directing from a script by Zack Estrin (Prison Break, Tru Calling), who makes his feature debut here.

Paranormal Activity 4 arrives in theatres in two weeks, bringing the horrors of the immensely successful franchise back in time for Halloween.
We saw the full-length trailer for the found-footage horror last week, and now a new thirty-second teaser of clip snippets has been released.
As of yet, there’s still no official synopsis, which means things should stay a little unexpected until it hits the big screen.

I ended up watching this brief teaser promoting Paranormal Activity 4 and it's the first one I've watched so cut me some slack if previous trailers have introduced Robbie (Brady Allen) who apparently is a new kid that moved in across the street and, according to the trailer, "so creepy." Not sure what that means for the film, but word out of Fantastic Fest after a work print screened is that this is the most violent of the franchise yet, but also doesn't really deal with the mythology built in the first three enough. The film just received its R rating for "language and some violence/terror" and it will be hitting theaters on October 19 although you can get a screening in your city early if you "Want It" over at the official site. I "wanted" it for Seattle, but we're down at #95 on the list and only the top...

Poltergeist and The Ring made terrifying use of a standard TV set but technology has moved on since then - and in Paranormal Activity 4 it's the Xbox Kinect that provides the conduit to creepiness.
The Microsoft device adds a cool new touch to the second trailer for the next instalment in Paramount's horror franchise.
Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Paranormal Activity 4 is released on October 19, 2012.
The story picks up five years after Paranormal Activity 2.
Katie Featherston, who appeared in the three previous films, reprises her role as Katie.
Moving to a new town with baby Hunter - now called Robbie - Katie ends up in hospital. Robbie (Brady Allen) is taken in by neighbour Alice (Kathryn Newton) who soon begins to experience terrifying supernatural phenomena.
The first trailer was issued at the start of August, followed by a first official image at the end of that month.

New Paranormal Activity 4 second spooky movie trailer released with terrifying new scenes. Used to be I would be doubtful kids like the cute teenage girl and her boyfriend in “Paranormal Activity 4″ would run around recording every little second of their lives on video. Of course, I then saw what was on TV nowadays (or heck, on YouTube and pretty much everywhere this thing we call the planet), and realize that Yes, they actually do this. Not only do they do it, but they are more than willing to let you see every second of it. So in that respect, “Paranormal Activity 4″ is probably the most realistic of all the “Paranormal Activity” movies so far! Go figure. Anyhoo, check out the latest trailer for Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s second go-round on the series, which continues the adventures of evil spirits stalking homes. Plus, evil kids, man, am I right? So friggin’ spooky. Starring Katie Featherston, Kathryn Newton, Matt Shively,...

Hitting theatres the weekend before Halloween next month, Paranormal Activity 4 is the latest instalment of the highly successful horror franchise, created by Oren Peli.
We caught the first trailer for the film last month, and with its release now just a few weeks away, the full-length trailer has landed, giving us a longer look at the horrors in store for us right around the corner.
There’s no official synopsis, which is excellent, because it means you’ll have to wait until you get into the theatre to find out what it’s all about, a little more unaware than most films. This new trailer is a little spoilery, though, so watch at your own risk.

Paramount just sent over the above picture from Paranormal Activity 4, which seems to feature young Hunter in the background terrorizing a young teen named Alice (Kathryn Newton), or at least that's what I'm guessing as the studio has yet to release a plot synopsis and most likely won't. IMDb does list an actor named Brady Allen playing a child named Robbie in the film, but to my recollection that isn't a character from the previous films. It is known, however that Katie Featherston will be returning for the film which hits theaters on October 19. I have uploaded a larger version to the gallery pages here, where you can also watch a few early teaser trailers from the film.
