There’s a reason we would never advise someone to audition for American Idol using one of the judges’ own songs — it doesn’t always end well.
But that didn’t stop 22-year-old Madaí Chakell from attempting to soar where so many others before her have stumbled, performing “I Kissed a Girl” in front of Katy Perry herself. And while it wasn’t a total crash-and-burn moment, Katy was visibly confused by what she heard.

Fontaines D.C. have released their cover of Nick Drake’s cherished “‘Cello Song.” The recording serves as first single off of a forthcoming tribute project, The Endless Coloured Ways – The Songs of Nick Drake, out on July 7th via Chrysalis Records.
Adopting a different approach than Drake’s original (first released on 1969’s Five Leaves Left), Fontaines switch out the bustling acoustics and the titular cello for a driving backbeat, a soundscape of guitars, and a haunting melody that, all combined, use Drake’s same spark to light a whole new flame. Hearing vocalist Grian Chatten croon the final verse, “So forget this cruel world/ Where I belong/ I’ll just sit and wait/ And sing my song,” it makes one reflect on how Drake would feel if he could see the impact he’s made on so many artists since his tragic death in 1974. Watch the music video for Fontaines D.

Nick Drake’s discography proved to be a goldmine for the forthcoming album The Endless Coloured Ways, a collection of 32 of the musician’s most essential catalog entries reimagined by various artists. On the first release from the project, out July 7, Fontaines D.C. flips Drake’s 1969 classic “‘Cello Song.”

Producers and topliners have always had a particular dynamic: The producer usually sits behind the mixing board in the recording studio, acting as the song’s Svengali, while the topliner in the booth — the singer-songwriter who is responsible for layering lyrics and melodies over the beat — follows their lead.
But the age-old deferential relationship has flipped in Covid quarantine: Without the ability to work in recording studios, many topliners have had to become one-person operations, writing, recording and mixing their own songs in isolation and sending their vocals back to producers.

The only thing more exhilarating and exhausting than HBO’s stunning summer drama “Euphoria” was its soundtrack. Wound through the sparkly noir soap opera of teens in a love-hate relationship with drugs, sex and themselves was this equally torrid and twilight-y musical tone — an undulating, wall-to-wall set of songs and score crowding around Sam Levinson’s vision of ordinary madness. That there was just enough room for airy, gospel electronica and overheated melodic house to hover atop the proceedings — with the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Bts, Fiona Apple, J Balvin and “Euphoria” actor-singer Zendaya among its often 20-plus songs her episode — was a miracle of music direction.
Labrinth made that miracle happen and created a score as hallucinatory as the images on the screen. The Brit-born dance floor producer and composer best known for bits of Rihanna’s “Unapologetic,” The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind the Madness,” and records by Skylar Grey,...

Scottish soul singer Emeli Sandé has returned with a staggering new anthem, “Sparrow.”

The age of the celebrity supergroup charity single truly began in October 1984, when Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof watched in horror as footage of the worsening Ethiopian famine played across his television screen as part of a BBC News documentary. He was still haunted by the images a week later when a chance encounter reunited him with an old friend, Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, who was just as troubled by what he had seen on the report. The men decided to channel their outrage into a new charity single.

Disco legends Nile Rodgers and Chic head to Abbey Road to uncover the scientific secret behind the perfect groove in the new video for “Sober,” premiering exclusively at Rolling Stone. The New Jack Swing-inspired cut features British singer Craig David and rising rapper Stefflon Don.
The eye-popping clip opens with a partially animated sequence in which Rodgers arrives at Abbey Road, dons his lab coat and begins searching for the elements that comprise a great song. Rodgers cheekily suggests the secret is a device he found buried in the bowels of the famed studio,...

Nile Rodgers reaches back to New Jack Swing, the brittle fusion of hip-hop and R&B that ruled the second half of the Eighties, on the new single “Sober” with his group Chic.
Actually, it’s a little more complicated than that: This is a disco pioneer playing New Jack Swing with Craig David, an English singer who became famous working in a dance style known as U.K. garage, and Stefflon Don, an English rapper of Jamaican descent who was born just as New Jack Swing was beginning to lose its popularity.

Songstress Emeli Sandé may have grown up in Scotland, but we’ll take the all-around icon of cool’s version of a London guidebook any day.
The “Read All About It” singer doesn’t just suggest the best times to hit up the London Eye and where to get the best fish and chips, of course. Instead, Sandé teamed up with the home-sharing site Airbnb (with whom she also helped launch Music Experiences with an intimate living room performance in March) to share the secret places in the capital city that inspire her to get creative.

Of all the genres that found popularity in the Edm age, drum and bass seems like the most under-appreciated. While a number of top notch producers keep the scene going strong, the forward thinking genre tends to be overlooked by all but the purest of dance music fans. But this may be the year all that changes as Belgian drum and bass producer Netsky drops his excellent new album 3, a follow up to his last LP released four years ago.
On 3, Netsky crafts expertly produced breakbeats that serve as the power behind uplifting drum and bass tunes. The heavy use of soulful vocal collaborators and soaring, organic instrumentation brings a human element to the frantically paced drum excursions, and Netsky manages to create a cohesive sounding album that holds together as a singular work. After farmer Hannah Marie Kilminster belted out 'Somebody To Love' on last night's episode of The X Factor, Nick Grimshaw and Simon Cowell suggested starting a farm to produce singers.
We're so confused as to what we've been doing so far...
The X Factor 2015: Relive the best (and worst) of Sunday night's auditions
The X Factor has always had comparisons to factory lines, but maybe a farm is a better analogy - after all, at least some care and attention is given to help the contestants grow. Either way, last night's show certainly seemed to be pumping out the acts.
In just over an hour we were treated to 14 hopefuls. On the one hand, this is admirable - we were certainly getting a lot of bang for our buck, especially given that 12 made it through - but on the other, are we going to remember them all?...

Here's one of those 'This'll make you feel old' factoids - it's two years since the last ever episode of Skins aired.
E4's groundbreaking hormone-fest wrapped up on August 5, 2013 - with an older Cook (Jack O'Connell) heading off into an uncertain future at the close of 'Rise (Part Two)'.
Cook was but one of 27 major characters featured on Skins across three 'Generations' - in a total of 61 episodes, split into seven series. But where are the teen tearaways of Roundview College now?
Generation One
1. Nicholas Hoult
Hoult played Tony Stonem - the pre-eminent bad boy of Skins - across its first two series. Later badly hurt in a traffic accident and forced to rely on others, Tony had mellowed by his final episodes.
Now aged 25, Hoult has become a bona-fide Hollywood star with roles in this year's Mad Max: Fury Road and the much-anticipated book adaptations Dark Places and Kill Your Friends.

It's spring, which means the days are getting longer, the trees are beginning to blossom, and all sorts of rumours have started to fly around about The X Factor's lineup.

Simon Cowell is as close to a 100% confirmed as can be.
An ever-present from 2004 to 2010, Si took some time out to concentrate on the Us show, but came crawling back last year.

There were only two steals left going into tonight's round of battles on The Voice UK, so it was always going to be a bit dramatic, right? Sure enough, the 12 remaining battle pairings pulled no punches as they took to the ring to persuade their coaches to put them through to the knockouts.

We've already had one episode of Battles on The Voice UK and it got pretty dramatic, so who knows what could happen this weekend? There are still 12 pairs of acts waiting to step into the ring in an attempt to make it through to the Knockouts (or at least get stolen by another coach).
Read on to find out who you'll see battling this weekend - and what they'll be singing (complete with pictures of the battles themselves)...
Team Will
Stephen Cornwell vs Jake Shakeshaft
Song: 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall' - Coldplay
Remind me who they are! Stephen won over Rita Ora with his muscles but Will snapped him up after his rendition of 5 Seconds of Summer's 'She Looks So Perfect'; Jake, on the other hand, impressed the coaches with his name and, more importantly, his Ed Sheeran cover.
Sheena McHugh vs Hollie Barrie
Song: 'Sisters Are Doing It...

The X Factor finalists have all performed duets as part of their bid to be crowned this year's winner.
Details of who would partner with each of the finalists - Fleur East, Andrea Faustini and Ben Haenow - were closely guarded in the run-up to Saturday evening's (December 13) broadcast.
First up, Ben Haenow shared the stage with Brit and Ivor Novello winner Ed Sheeran for a rendition of 'Thinking Out Loud', who Haenow dubbed "the most incredible man in the world".
"Getting to sing with this guy, he's a legend, and getting to do this in front of these guys, with this man - that's incredible," said Haenow after his performance.

It's getting serious on The X Factor now, and how do we know? Because each act will be performing two songs this week... no biggie! There are just five hopefuls left – Stereo Kicks, Lauren Platt, Andrea Faustini, Ben Haenow and Fleur East – but who's going to shine?
One thing they've had no control over this week is song choice. The public picked one of their tracks, and special celeb guests chose the other. That means anything could happen, so join us from the start of the show at 8pm, as we bring you all the action...
