Mean Girls‘ Aaron Samuels sure has done good since leaving North Shore High! Jonathan Bennett, the actor behind the iconic character who made October 3rd the best day ever in the 2004 feature, has emerged as one of the top talents at Hallmark, having starred in a slew of their holiday films over the past few years. Now, the Christmas on Cherry Lane star, along with Hallmark fan favorites Tyler Hynes (Three Wise Men and a Baby) and B.J. Britt (A Christmas Serenade), is headlining The Groomsmen, an original movie trilogy that will launch on the new Hallmark+ service this fall. The new Mean Girls is coming to physical media in the UK in April, on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. More here.
Given that the original 2004 take on Mean Girls is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK shortly, it’s not the biggest surprise in the world that the 2024 take on the same story is also on its way.
Mean Girls 2024 – the version of the film that’s a musical but don’t tell anybody it’s a musical because that wouldn’t be on – was originally intended to be a Paramount+ straight to streaming film. Good test screening results saw it upgraded to a cinema release, and the resultant movie has grossed over $100m at the global box office.
Not bad at all for a definitely not a musical.

Mean Girls remains one of the most iconic teen movies, and that’s partly down to the all-around perfect casting choices that were made behind the scenes. Can you even imagine what it would have been like if the lineup of talent had been different!?
Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfied and Lacey Chabert grounded the movie as members of The Plastics – teen royalty of North Shore High School.
They were joined by other talented young actors such as Jonathan Bennett, Daniel Franzese and Lizzy Caplan alongside comedy legends Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
In 2024, the cast is forever associated with the characters that they played in the movie. However, Mean Girls almost looked very different.
For starters, all three members of The Plastics auditioned for other parts in the movie before they were finally cast. Several other actresses were also in the running for parts, and an A-list actor...

Get in, loser; we’re doing the recap and ending breakdown of the new Mean Girls. The original Mean Girls wasn’t simply a cult classic; it was an instant feminist superhit comedy that had all of us young girls in a chokehold. 20 years later, we get to see an “upgraded” version of the film, which is a musical adaptation of the film and also a direct adaptation of the Mean Girls Broadway musical. As a fan of musicals and Mean Girls, I presumed this film would be right up my alley, but alas, none of the music sticks the landing, and as for the best parts, they were all already in the original, so I am left quite disappointed. I suppose one thing remains the same: Regina George is still an icon, and both actresses who play the woman do the character justice in their own way. I suppose...

Tina Fey has revealed the one stipulation that she and Tim Meadows had about reprising their roles in the new Mean Girls movie.
It’s been nearly 20 years since Fey and Meadows initially starred as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, respectively, in the 2004 film. But they decided to return as their iconic characters in the new movie musical adaptation, based on the 2018 Broadway musical, as long as they didn’t have to sing.
“I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it,” Fey recently told People magazine. “So I called Tim and I was like, ‘Will you do it? I’ll do it if you do it.’ And we said, ‘Yes, as long as we don’t have to sing.'”
The actress-comedian added of working with Meadows again, “It was fun.

It’s a badge of honor for a movie to be made into a stage musical. It’s an even bigger badge of honor for that musical to be adapted back into a movie of its own. But here we are – 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters and six years after the show hit Broadway, Mean Girls the musical is now a movie.
Mean Girls is about a teenager named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who, until now, has been homeschooled by her mother while Mom does research in Africa. Cady finally gets a chance to attend a regular high school, and it goes about as well as one would expect. To put it plainly, Cady is socially awkward.

"It's October 3rd," answers Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) after her crush Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett) asks her for the date. This beat is literally five seconds long and insignificant to an outside observer, but that's the whole joke. If you were ever a teenager in love, then you know what it's like to hyper-fixate on minor interactions like this the way that Cady does.
Like so many lines in "Mean Girls," October 3rd has resonance all its own thanks to the internet. People are always sure to share screenshots or clips of the scene on social media whenever it's, ya know, October 3rd. The date is even celebrated as "Mean Girls Day" by fans of the film. The "Mean Girls" stage musical opened ticket sales at the August Wilson Theatre on October 3, 2017.

Get in, loser. We’re going to make some money at the box office. Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and the Plastics of Paramount‘s Mean Girls wore green on Thursday when the cult classic comedy musical adaptation banked $3.25M in previews. The latest iteration of Mean Girls began burning books on the silver screen (again) at 4 pm on Thursday, giving the film written by Tina Fey a solid start to the weekend. Before Mean Girls was destined for the big screen, it was planned as a Paramount+ exclusive. However, test screenings made it clear the musical could put asses in seats, thus the pivot to cinemas.
Another movie buzzing into theaters this week is the David Ayer action film The Beekeeper, starring Jason Statham as a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.” Ayer’s action-packed romp collected $2.4M in box office honey on Thursday. Statham...

She joins a new school and befriends The Plastics, the “cool girl” squad played in this reimagining by Renee Rapp, Bebe Wood and Avantika — who take over from Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfriend.

Review: For those that weren’t there, it’s hard to describe just how massive Mean Girls was in the mid-2000s. It essentially changed the way high schoolers were represented in movies. I’m not usually a fan of these types of films yet Mean Girls has always stood out as a witty and clever comedy that is honestly pretty funny. But my enjoyment of the film didn’t go past that. The musical stage play or book that followed also received acclaim, though I’m not familiar with either. I simply went into this expecting a Mean Girls musical and that’s exactly what I got.

The very first shot of the 2024 musical reimagining of "Mean Girls" is a vertical frame. Picture this: perpetual franchise breakouts Janis and Damian are guiding us (their already captive audience) through what’s to come, care of a fourth wall-breaking, high-energy musical sequence centered around the tantalizingly-named banger “A Cautionary Tale.” This tale is, of course, all about young Cady Heron, an awkward (but endearing) teenager who is about to move from Kenya (not Kentucky) to a suburban high school and get her life utterly rocked by the social mores of American teenagehood.

When “Mean Girls” went to the stage in 2017, it was aided immeasurably by persistence of vision: Tina Fey, who had initially adapted a non-fiction parenting book to make her 2004 teen hit, also penned the book that would bring the,...

The January 2024 release calendar is pretty barren — even by January standards. Because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that dragged on for months last year after the AMPTP refused to make a deal in a timely manner, the first chunk of this year is sorely lacking in big theatrical releases. The box office needs a hero to emerge from what is on the calendar to help keep theaters on their feet during this rough patch. Could the new "Mean Girls" musical be that hero? If all goes well, Paramount's new take on the early 2000s classic will indeed give ticket sales a much-needed boost.
"Mean Girls" is currently looking at an opening weekend of $20 million or more. Deadline reports that the film is tracking for a $27 million opening across the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, which means the estimation includes Monday. Box Office Pro, meanwhile, is bullish...

The tracklist for the “Mean Girls” soundtrack is out, and it turns out some of the songs “can’t sit with” others that have made it into Tina Fey’s film adaptation of the Broadway musical, which comes out Jan. 15.
The fourth iteration of the high school dramedy — it’s adapted from the stage musical that was based on the 2004 original film which was adapted from the 2002 parenting book “Queen Bees and Wannabes” by Rosalind Weisman — stars Angourie Rice (“The Last Thing He Told Me”) as Cady Haron, Auli’i Cravalho as Janice and Jaquel Spivey (lead in “A Strange Loop” on Broadway) as Damien.
Renée Rapp, who played Regina George in the musical, will reprise her role in the film. Avantika (“Senior Year”) will play Karen and Bebe Wood will play Gretchen.

Many fans have been wondering about the musical numbers that will be in the movie and if any of their favorites would be cut.
“The songs are sounding – It’s really a more kind of pop. And it’s a fascinating process, actually, because you kind of, in Broadway, everything has to play to the back of the house, and then movies, you can kind of come back in and things can play really intimately,” writer Tina Fey said on Late Night with Seth Meyers back in February 2023.

Angourie Rice plays the naïve new student Cady Heron who tries to fit in with the popular Plastics clique in the final trailer for Mean Girls, which hits theaters on Jan. 12.
Cady navigates the elite girls club led by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika Vandanapu) after moving from Kenya to a Chicago suburb and struggling to survive her new high school jungle.
That challenge only grows when Cady falls foul of Regina when she gains the attention of her ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, played by Christopher Briney, with whom she soon has a serious crush. “We as women have to support each other,” Tina Fey says at one point in the trailer as she reprises her role as math teacher Ms Norbury to underline the movie’s message: Girls shouldn’t be trying to tear each other down in high school.

Paramount’s new twist on Mean Girls arrived on tracking today and let’s just say it’s not just hot with the cool girls. With double digit in unaided awareness among older and younger women over and under 25, the feature take of the Tina Fey scripted Broadway musical is looking at a $27M+ opening over the four-day MLK holiday.
Note that unaided is that portion of audience polling whereby the respondents organically cite a movie title they’re interested in seeing, and aren’t prompted by a pollster. What’s clear here is that the Mean Girls brand is extremely strong. Paramount is just beginning to get their Mean Girls campaign underway three weeks before the pic’s opening on Jan. 12.
A $27M+ or even $30M opening is a great start for a comedy aimed at women in the post-Covid era. Also consider the fact that there are several...
