The Santa Ynez Valley — one of California’s most inviting wine regions — now has something new to offer: its first bona fide luxury resort.
The storied The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern (from $950 per night, more booking options at Expedia.com and Hotels.com) in Los Olivos, California, has been meticulously modernized by design firm AvroKO and has just been opened under the management of luxury hospitality titan Auberge Resorts Collection. The new resort cements Santa Barbara County’s once-under-the-radar wine country destination — where past and current residents include Bernie Taupin, Noah Wylie, Bo Derek and David Crosby — as a vibrant vacation spot.
A former 1800s stagecoach stop between San Francisco and Los Angeles offering food and lodgings for travelers needing a recharge, Mattei’s Tavern reigned as the roaring social hub of the Santa Ynez Valley for over a century. Over the years, the spot had a host of iterations under various owners,...

As a kid, fashion and home designer Jenni Kayne used to visit the Santa Ynez Valley with her family. “I have such amazing memories of summers and long weekends there,” says Kayne regarding the wine-growing region northwest of the city of Santa Barbara.
In September of 2020, Kayne purchased a 3,860-square-foot home in the valley — where celebrity residents have included Noah Wylie, Bo Derek, tennis great Jimmy Connors and lyricist Bernie Taupin — but the four-bedroom house was not exactly move-in ready.
“I spent time looking for the right property in Santa Ynez, and came across this home that had been abandoned since the 1970s. It was near disrepair, with caution tape across the sinks and toilets and animals living inside,” says Kayne, who nevertheless could see the potential of the space as a showcase for her Jenni Kayne Home collection and as a place...

Timothy Hutton has sued the producers of the TV series “Leverage: Redemption,” alleging that they breached his contract when they dropped him from the show following a report of a sexual assault allegation.
BuzzFeed reported in March 2020 that a woman had gone to the Vancouver Police Department, alleging that Hutton had raped her in 1983, when she was 14. Hutton denied the allegations and alleged that the accuser had repeatedly sought to extort him out of millions of dollars. Prosecutors in British Columbia ultimately decided not to press charges.
At the time, Hutton was preparing to reprise his role in “Leverage,” a TNT series that ran from 2008 to 2012. But after the BuzzFeed report, the production company, Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment, dropped him from the reboot of the show.
The suit alleges that Electric did nothing to investigate the allegation and ignored evidence that Hutton’s representatives presented that challenged the claim.

Things are looking up for Lgbtq representation on TV, according to GLAAD’s Where We Are on TV report, released Thursday. The annual report analyzes the overall diversity of primetime scripted series regulars on broadcast networks and assesses the number of Lgbtq characters on cable networks as well as original scripted series on Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix for the 2018-2019 TV season. Overall, the percentage of Lgbtq series regulars on broadcast television increased from last year’s 6.4 percent to 8.8 percent — a record high.
Bolstered by this progress, the advocacy group threw down the gauntlet and issued the TV industry a challenge: increase Lgbtq representation to 10 percent of series regular characters on primetime scripted broadcast series by 2020. That doesn’t seem like a difficult or unreasonable goal to achieve, especially considering that GLAAD and Harris Poll’s Accelerating Acceptance study shows that a significant 20 percent of Americans 18-34 identify as Lgbtq.

Prodigiously compensated primetime television juggernaut Jim Parsons, central star of the wildly popular ensemble sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” and narrator of its spin-off “Young Sheldon,” listed his architecturally significant and sumptuously appointed Hollywood pedigreed residence on a famously celeb-packed street in L.A.’s Los Feliz area at $8.95 million.
Designed by El Capitan Theater architect Stiles O. Clements in the early 1920s and known in certain architecture circles as Seyler House after its original owner, an insurance executive, the 1.45-acre hillside spread has long been owned by a succession of showbiz movers and shakers including Tim Curry, Noah Wylie, Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson and director Robert Luketic. In 2011 the property was acquired for $6.275 million by “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson who, after listing it at $6.75 million, sold it to Parsons in early 2014 for $6.375 million. Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. Get these two their own buddy movie, stat! George Clooney was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to promote "Hail, Caesar!" and they attempted a last-minute "E.R." reunion sketch. However, no one from the original cast showed up except Clooney, so Kimmel had to call in "House" alum Hugh Laurie to play doctor backup. It was glorious. Glorious!
First, Kimmel broke character as the patient to apologize to Clooney for the lack of "E.R." co-stars.
Clooney: "Julianna Margulies?"
Kimmel: "Yeah, she's filming 'The Good Wife.' She couldn't make it."
Clooney: "Noah Wylie?"
Kimmel: "He wanted to be here, but I guess he's got a thing with his family, Taco Tuesday."
Clooney: "Eriq La Salle?"
Kimmel: "Oh no, Eriq La Salle had jury duty."
Kimmel offered to cancel, but Clooney said, "No, when George Clooney commits to an E.R. sequel..." Kimmel cut in, "... reunion?" and Clooney broke the fourth wall to correct himself.

Falling Skies commences its ten-episode final season with an entertaining uptick in violence...
This review contains spoilers.
5.1 Find Your Warrior
In season four of Falling Skies, Battlestar Galactica veteran David Eick took over as showrunner and producer, and the show shifted subtly from a Revolutionary War parallel to a more traditional war story. Now, with the final season locked in for ten episodes, Eick is promsing even more chaos and carnage, transitioning from the Revolution to Vietnam. He's even gone as far as to call the last season of Falling Skies 'Apocalypse Now on crystal meth'. The family drama is getting put by the wayside for some good, old-fashioned alien murder, or so we're promised.
That remains to be seen, but after watching the first episode of the season, I can say that there is a very high body count and for once, Falling Skies doesn't trade bloodshed for speeches—you get both,...

Civil War on Drugs: Burris Turns Southern Gothic into Southern Comfort
Though its title sounds something you’d expect to grace a Christian propaganda film starring Kirk Cameron, the directorial debut by producer David Burris, The World Made Straight, gets drunk on its own solemn resonance and turns its intriguing elements of tragic fate and warps them into eye crossed foolishness. Painstakingly earnest Jeremy Irvine, struggling still to make good on the boost afforded his visibility after 2011’s War Horse, headlines a curious cast assembled atop an organism featuring a number of exciting elements. But this is rather complicated material and is based on Ron Rash’s 2006 novel. A higher degree of finesse could have teased out the tale’s noir roots, as clearly it’s inspired by any number of Elizabethan or Greek tragedy sources, whereby bloodlines are irrevocably cursed by misdeeds of the forefathers.

Falling Skies' family melodrama is never its strongest suit, and this week's episode is chock-full of it...
This review contains spoilers.
4.10 Drawing Straws
Falling Skies works best when it's blasting aliens and having fun with its sci-fi, or when it dabbles in horror elements to try to be creepy. The Mason family drama is not the show's strongest suit, though it has worked at times in the past. This week, however, the Mason squabbling throws a spanner into the works and detracts from some very good special affects on the beamer ships. Lexi travels to the Dianetics commercial lava world, overhears an alien plot, and destroys some valuable alien hardware in her return to the good side, but we spend much more time listening to people bicker than we do watching Lexi turn good and kill some fish heads
Tom bickers with Anne about his inability to let anyone else be the hero,...

Tom Mason is shooting for the moon in this week's Falling Skies. Here's Ron's review of Till Death Do Us Part...
This review contains spoilers.
4.9 Till Death Do Us Part
If a show actively has characters lampshading decisions, does it still count? Falling Skies, which typically opts for the happiest of all choices in the end, even when it comes to betrayal, had a character from Matt's past return in a big way this week. While Tom, Cochise, Anne, Weaver, and Matt—you know, the most important people in Charleston and the leadership of the Second Mass—are off looking for a cache of Volm weapons, Mira runs into them on the road. She spins an implausible story about how she graduated from the camp but just happened to run into them on the road and that she's thrown her Espheni dog whistle away, but Tom and Weaver see through it pretty instantly.

This week's Falling Skies is fun, well-crafted, and smoother than it has been. Here's Ron's review of Door Number Three...
This review contains spoilers.
4.6 Door Number Three
It's interesting to see Falling Skies leaning increasingly on its history to bring back tidbits from the past and make them relevant to the current events. In the case of Lexi Mason-Glass (Glass-Mason?), it's wise of the show and writer Melissa Glenn to bring back elements from all sides of the Mason family to tie things in the fourth season to those in the first three. After all, there have been a lot of suspicious elements throughout Falling Skies, most of which have to do with various Mason entanglements with the Espheni or their agents.
Tom spent a significant time on board the space craft of the Espheni, and even spent time with them during his time in the concentration camp. Ben...

Director David Fincher and "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin already teamed up for the Oscar-winning Facebook drama "The Social Network," and now they may be turning their talents to a biopic of another tech legend: Apple founder Steve Jobs. Fincher ("Fight Club," "Seven") is in early talks to direct the as-yet-untitled film, while Sorkin has already finished writing the script for producer Scott Rudin, according to Variety. Based on Walter Isaacson's 2011 bestseller "Steve Jobs," the film reportedly has an unconventional structure consisting of just three long scenes, with each one taking place behind the scenes of one of Apple’s many major product launches through the years. Fincher is currently wrapping up "Gone Girl" -- which opens October 3 -- and could be moving onto the Jobs film soon after, depending on negotiations. After decades of tech innovation (including introducing the iPod and iPhone), Jobs passed away in 2011. He was...

The fifth episode of the season for Falling Skies is one I've been waiting for since the events of last week. Basically, this week's instalment promised a Pope and Mason festival, and do we ever get it. The show's best actor and best-defined character together for the bulk of an episode? Thank you very much, Falling Skies. It's strange to see that after all this time, Mason and Pope don't get along, but it's nice to see them fighting with one another. They're very complementary characters, each filling in the gaps of the other in the show sense, and when you've got the star (Noah Wylie) and the break-out actor (Colin Cunningham) together in the A plot,...

They're very complementary characters, each filling in the gaps of the other in the show sense, and when you've got the star (Noah Wylie) and the break-out actor (Colin Cunningham) together in the A plot,...

After last year's huge cliffhanger -- the arrival of a new species of aliens -- "Falling Skies" is back for Season 3, kicking off this Sunday on TNT. But don't expect the sci-fi drama to pick up exactly where it left off.
Set seven months in the future, Noah Wylie's character, Tom Mason, has actually come around to the idea of politics, one he pushed aside when Dr. Manchester (Terry O'Quinn) suggested it in the Season 2 finale. Now, he's not only in politics, Tom is the President and settled in Charleston with the 2nd Mass.

TNT has unveiled its summer schedule, featuring the return of established series and a handful of new shows. We are back again for our second live blog of the 2013 awards season and tonight it's the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards and it's sort of fun to say that tonight there is actually a reason to watch and pay attention for anyone the least bit interested in the awards race. Will Best Ensemble go to Lincoln? Argo? Silver Linings Playbook? Will it be Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) or Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) taking home Best Actress? And what about Supporting Actor? will it be Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) or Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln)? I think it's safe to assume Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) and Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) will go home winners tonight, but otherwise it's a wide open show. You can check out the full list of nominees for both movies and television right here and the results of the RopeofSilicon reader predictions here.

Robert Pattinson has reportedly decided to sell his Los Feliz home in California now that the actor and Kristen Stewart have broken up. The 22-year old Stewart, who was caught cheating on Pattinson with her Snow White director Rupert Sanders, has since moved out of the home but is still rumored to have some of her belongings there. Pattinson is now selling since there are too many memories there. The $6.3 million dollar home once belonged to actor Noah Wylie of both ‘ER’ and ‘Falling Skies’ fame. The house sits “on an acre and a half of land and has a 150-person screening room and amazing gardens.” The couple normally [ Read More ]...

As expected, TNT has renewed Falling Skies for a third season of 10 episodes. The cable channel says that season three will air sometime in 2013 but didn't indicate a summer run.
Currently in its second season, Falling Skies is averaging a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.95 million total viewers (based on the daily final ratings). That's down by about 16% in both categories.
Last Sunday's episode drew a 1.2 in the demo with 3.64 million viewers. Season two is expected to finish airing on August 19th.
Starring Noah Wylie, Falling Skies revolves around a group resistance fighters who are struggling to survive following an alien invasion. The 2nd Mass resistance militia will keep fighting the good fight according to Variety. To no big surprise, TNT is reportedly planning to renew Falling Skies, their popular sci-fi action series, for a third season.
Featuring Noah Wylie and a large ensemble cast, the second season of Falling Skies debuted to 4.46 million viewers and a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Season-to-date, Falling Skies is averaging 4.03 million viewers and a 1.4 demo rating.
Year-to-year, that's down by 14% in both categories. Still, it remains TNT's highest-rated TV show in the demo.
There's no word on how many episodes TNT will order for the third season but the two existing seasons have had 10 installments each.

Update: Check out our review of the Falling Skies season 2 premiere.
Falling Skies, TNT’s big science fiction platform starring Noah Wylie and Moon Bloodgood, returned for its second season last night in a 2-hour event, and if you’re a head you caught it last night (unlike me who waits for everything to be on-demand in some form). For you, we have a promo clip for next week’s episode, titled “Compass”. A lot of people are expressing anger in this more lengthy than usual TV tease – including some good old fashioned sibling chocking outs going on.

“Compass” airs next Sunday on TNT on June 24th.
Falling Skies “Compass” (2.03) Episode Summary:
The 2nd Mass moves into an airport hanger; Anne grows concerned about the health of the group; the Berserkers create a plan to get rid of Tom; a mysterious visitor arrives.

Successful sci-fi series are often lauded for their impressive visual effects and stunts, but at times cans sacrifice intriguing characters and thought provoking plot-lines. But the hit critically acclaimed TNT series ‘Falling Skies,’ whose anticipated second season premieres tomorrow night at 9/8c, has garnered attention for its suspensefully paced stories and strong-willed characters. Actor Peter Shinkoda, who was cast by the show’s executive producer, Steven Spielberg, returns as Dai in the new season. Dai, the competent commando who is often coming to the rescue of Noah Wylie’s character, Tom, is just one of the strong, memorable characters on the series. ‘Falling Skies’ follows a group of civilians and soldiers struggling [ Read More ]...

I've spent the last week puzzling over what I would say in my Falling Skies preview piece. After all, the first few episodes I have seen were good... but there is nothing new. Tom is back from his three-month sojourn with the aliens. That's not much of a surprise; Noah Wylie's character is the unopposed lead of the series, and he is a producer on the show. He is back right away. But is Tom back or is it alien Tom? Tom Lite? It is not dissimilar to the season one storyline in which Tom's son, Ben, gets harnessed by the aliens. Though Tom steals him back, and Dr. Glass manages to remove (most) of the harness from his spine, much of the rest of the season is devoted to wondering and worrying if Ben, like his friend...

"Falling Skies," -- the breakout hit of last summer -- is back, and we have the explosive first three minutes from the new season! The science fiction drama follows a ragtag band of freedom fighters battling alien invaders in Massachusetts. In the Season 1 finale, resistance leader Tom Mason (Noah Wylie) willingly boarded an alien vessel. The Season 2 premiere picks up three months later. Tom is nowhere to be seen, and the freedom fighters, dubbed the 2nd Mass, are continuing their fight with the alien Skitters and their robotic Mechs. There's bikes, guns, lasers and rocket launchers -- everything a great battle needs. Check it out below:Perhaps the most notable part of the intro is Tom's middle son Ben (Connor Jessup) -- who was kidnapped and harnessed by the Skitters as a worker -- is now an active fighter. He leaps from an open window (having gained superhuman agility while he...

Everywhere you look, dystopia stories abound. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games became the movie event of the spring while the most talking about new NBC series is J.J. Abrams’ Revolution. Little surprise then that basic cable’s ratings darling in 2011 was TNT’s Falling Skies. With the show’s second season debuting June 17, the first season has been released on DVD from Warner Home Entertainment. The premise is not necessarily an original one: aliens have arrived and have largely conquered Earth while small bands of resistance fighters struggle to free humanity. What the aliens want remains a mystery.

Well, this could be different. While Fox won't announce their fall schedule until about the time you're reading this, rumor is that they'll be moving Glee to Thursdays to make Tuesday all sitcoms, and giving Glee an American Idol lead-in for at least part of the year.
The Avengers racked up over $100 million this weekend, which has never been done before by a film on its second weekend. That puts the gross globally over the billion dollar mark. The poorly reviewed Dark Shadows was a bust, at least for a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration, bring in a mere $29 million.
Bob Greenblatt made some risky moves with his schedule over at NBC, but he does seem to have a plan, launching shows like Revolution (looks fascinating) after The Voice on Mondays, and giving Ryan Murphy's The New Normal the Tuesday post-The Voice launch, which hopefully makes it a hit.

Awards season may have come and gone, but sci-fi fans still have something to look forward to with today's announcement of the Saturn Award nominees.
The awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, recognize excellence in these genres, which are often underrepresented at other awards shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year's big movie contenders are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," "Hugo," tied with 10 nominations each.
A number of the movies scoring big have been commercial successes but have not received awards show love, including J.J. Abrams' $260-million grossing monster hit "Super 8," which nabbed eight nominations, and "Captain America: The First Avenger," which earned nearly $400 million worldwide, coming in with six.

I have my issues with TNT’s “Falling Skies” TV show, and frankly, the only reason I’ll even bother with the second season when it premieres this Summer is because, damn, what else is there on TV? There’s a pretty big shortage of quality sci-fi shows, so I guess we better appreciate what we have, right? Terry O’Quinn joining the cast should make the show a little more bearable, even if it is just for a few lousy eps. The former “Lost” star, who has been making time on another beach in “Hawaii Five-0″, will be trading in the fun and sun for the battlefields of “Falling Skies” in the show’s Season 2. O’Quinn is scheduled to show up for a two-episode arc (the last two episodes of the coming season) as a former history professor and mentor to the show’s lead, Tom Mason, played by Noah Wylie.
