Fire up your Snapchat. Upload something cool on fleek to Instagram. And, Oh Em Gee, limit your opinions to a Twitter-friendly 140 characters. So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation is upon us, and it’s going to improve its ratings in the advertiser-craved 18-34 demographic even if it kills those of us who’ve faithfully watched Fox’s summer staple for the past 12 seasons.

I don’t think anyone would mistake So You Think You Can Dance‘s 12th season as its strongest — aside from viewers who were trapped in some sort of Footloose-esque, no-grooving-allowed nightmare for its first 11.
But while the Great Stage-Vs.-Street/Jason Derulo-Vs.-Descriptive-Adjectives Experiment of 2015 lacked something in diversity (whatever happened to ballroom and disco?), gut-busting emotional concepts (what I wouldn’t have given for one routine on par with “Addiction Dance“) and insightful critique (Mary Murphy and Misty Copeland, I missed you!), I’d be lying if I said summer TV still wasn’t the better for it.

You can accuse So You Think You Can Dance‘s Nigel Lythgoe of a lot of crimes — aggressively leering at pretty young things; overtly or inadvertently ensuring that gay contestants never mention their sexual orientation on air* — but love him or hate him, the man is responsible for a pretty righteous Twitter feed. (*Correct me if I’m wrong on that, but I don’t recall one out-and-proud moment over 12 seasons… insert side-eye emoji here.)

In a lot of ways, Season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance won’t be much different than the installments that came before it.
Head judge Nigel Lythgoe has already identified a coy, blonde thing whose innocent-but-sexy demeanor (complete with end-of-audition wink) has catapulted her to the head of the class. Cat Deeley remains as charming (if not even more charming) a host as ever. And (praise be America’s dance-studio industry!), it looks like there’s no shortage of crazy-talented kids to give this year’s “Stage Vs. Street” twist a far better chance of garnering water-cooler buzz...

I’m not gonna lie to you: I went into tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance Top 6 performance episode with my mind made up.
Rudy and Tanisha got robbed last week. Valerie had no business being in the Top 6. For justice to prevail, the Season 11 crown could only end up in one spot: Atop Ricky’s artistically dazzling head.

So You Think You Can Dance‘s auditions are as finished as Kim Kardashian‘s singing career — ugh, remember that mess? — which means we’ve probably already met our Season 11 champ.
The question is… did we meet him or her during tonight’s Atlanta tryouts? I wouldn’t be shocked if the answer is “WooHoo!” (aka Mary Murphanese for “Yes!”).
After all, we met a very handsome, very polite young fella with the effortless, swooping grace of a barn swallow, a pretty powerful (and powerfully pretty) gal who scored with the coveted “beast” label from Uncle Nigel, and a returning...

It was a string of standing ovations by judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judge (and speaker of Truth) Debbie Allen on last night’s So You Think You Can Dance.
Despite the awesomeness of the first All-Star show with the Top 10 dance contestants, there’e always that dark cloud knowing two of our favorite dancers would be going home.
After the show, we grabbed some time with a few of the All-Stars (Melanie Moore, Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Neil Haskell) as well as the Top 10 (including the 2 eliminated contestants) to chat up the challenges of their dances, how tough it is to say goodbye to their fellow dancers and what dance style they still want to take on.

So You Think You Can Dance is back, and I’m telling you it’s an emotional time of year for me. I’m just getting over the glittery abandoned prom that is American Idol, coping with its (always) shockingly great finale, and now I’m bracing myself as another exhibition of talent and ridiculous camera-hogging begins. Sytycd is also a sign that summer’s here, and the shift from Idol‘s grueling crooner pageant to Sytycd‘s sweaty, sensual stylings feels like a seasonal touchstone. Dancewear is the international symbol for the delicious languor of summer. Sorry to go Vivaldi on everyone, but I’m just taking it all in.

First the good news: "So You Think You Can Dance" has its final four dancers. Tiffany Maher, Eliana Girard, Chehon Wespi-Tschopp and Cyrus Spencer will all vie for America's votes in next Tuesday's (Sept. 11) performance finale.
The bad news: Witney Carson and Cole Horibe were automatically eliminated after receiving the fewest votes.
Even though America decided their fate after last week's performance show, each contestant had to perform three dances tonight: solo, paired with an All-Star and paired with a fellow finalist.
"Up All Night" star Christina Applegate returned as a guest judge -- and poor predictor. "Your foot was terrible in your pirouette," she said about his jazz routine with reigning champ Melanie Moore, "but I don't give a s***, because you're so good. And we'll see you next week."
Well, at least he'll be in the audience? As usual, Eliana received mostly unanimous raves from the judges, who...

Jesse Tyler Ferguson — “weird and creepy and not a stalker,” he swears — just loves to come back and be a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance. The Modern Family star invented the Hot Jalapeno Bus (a new friend for Mary Murphy’s Hot Tamale Train), and poignantly called out Will’s personal-story junket (“Dance saved my life…”) as a reason why arts programs are so important to schools. He is, quite simply, the best.

"So You Think You Can Dance" Season 2 runner-up Travis Wall has choreographed for the Oscars, is a two-time Emmy nominee and now he's the star of his own reality show on Oxygen, "All the Right Moves." Oh, and he's only 24.
Travis went from being a contestant to a choreographer on "Sytycd" before starting his own dance company, Shaping Sound -- which is the subject of "All the Right Moves" -- with fellow "Sytycd" alum (and Season 1 winner) Nick Lazzarini, as well as Teddy Forance and Kyle Robinson. All The Right Moves is basically like So You Think You Can Dance: The College Years. Except, unlike the defunct Saved By The Bell spin-off, Oxygen's new reality show is really good. And for more reasons than simply seeing many of your favorite Sytycd alums (Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Allison Holker, Robert Roldan, Melanie Moore, Jaimie Goodwin and Channing Cooke for starters) dancing in the newly formed Shaping Sounds company.
At its core, Atrm is a story of friendship and watching those bonds strengthen through adversity. A tribulation which plays heavily into tonight's episode as the fallout from last week's Travis-gate (let's call it) is a major centerpiece. There were high expectations going into the Georgia auditions for season nine of "So You Think You Can Dance" since Atlanta is home to season-eight winner Melanie Moore. And the state certainly stepped up to the challenge. But the dancers who stood out the most were those who embraced their individuality and explosive charisma.
Although has already seen a diverse range of personalities, Georgia dancers exuded an infectious charisma that was heightened by the pairing of some unique dance styles. The ladies in the Dirty South kept it classy while embracing their sexy confidence. And the boys, well, they certainly charmed their way to Las Vegas.

I’ll admit I was a little worried when judge Mary Murphy warned against excessive booty-shaking to kick off So You Think You Can Dance‘s Season 9 Los Angeles auditions, but then I remembered: We’re talking about the inventor of the mythical Hot Tamale Train, a woman whose hooting, hollering, and general hootenanny-ing is so patently goofy, there’s no way she would seriously place restrictions on the fine art of contestants putting their backfields in motion. Plus, fabulous guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson wasn’t cosigning that warning anyhow. Let the wild rump-bumping begin!

"So You Think You Can Dance" is just in its second week of Season 9 auditions, but already hopeful Eliana Girard is drawing comparisons to Season 8 champ Melanie Moore. And not just from us, but from guest judge (and big-time "Dance" fan) Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family"), who sat in for this round of tryouts.
When "Sytycd" stopped in Los Angeles to screen potential dancers, they hit a rich vein of talent and sent a slew of contestants through to Vegas but none stood out like Girard, who combines her classical ballet training with some seriously rigorous pole dancing to produce a style that is utterly unique.
"I just hope that the people watching realized why in watching you we need a performance from the face and from the heart," said judge/producer Nigel Lythgoe. "It's not just putting on a face, but feeling it. It was a beautiful transition and it didn't feel fake.

With "American Idol's" winner -- Phillip Phillips -- declared, Fox and producer Nigel Lythgoe are ready to move on to the summer portion of their reality competition entertainment: "So You Think You Can Dance's" Season 9.
Host Cat Deeley returns to shepherd the competition through the summer while Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are returning to their usual spots behind the judges' table. But, there are a few changes in store for this season -- which isn't surprising to die-hard "Sytycd" fans. Let's review them before the action kicks off tonight with the first audition show:
It takes two: Two winners -- one male and one female -- will be declared this season for the first time in the show's history. While that's fabulous news for the 2012 crop of dancers we wish it had been a possibility last year so Marko Germar could have joined champion Melanie Moore in the winners' circle.

So what's changing? Here are five things to know about Sytycd's ninth season… 1. Perfect Pair: For the first time, two dancers, a guy and a girl, will be crowned the winners of Sytycd. Fox has yet to reveal their prize—last season's champ, Melanie Moore, received $250,000—so will this year's double champs share that amount, or will the show throw down more...

Rain has a way of making everything gloomy, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the perennially sunny Cat Deeley or the hundreds of hopeful New Yorkers who auditioned this morning for Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance.
Deeley and some 500-odd dancers braved the a.m. weather in Manhattan as day 1 of auditions for season 9 (!) of the hit dance competition rolled into New York (the third of five audition locations this year). The usual characters were of course there – a trio of street-trained hip-hoppers from Boston who quickly befriended each other at the bus station; a...
