Nicolas Winding Refn's neo-noir crime thriller "Drive," about a Hollywood stunt performer/getaway driver (Ryan Gosling) who gets involved in a job that puts himself, his next door neighbor (Carey Mulligan) and her son (Kaden Leos) in danger, garnered critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Film and Best Direction at the British Academy Film Awards. Enough time has past for the film, or at least the concept of a pensive, toothpick-fiddling Ryan Gosling driving a car, to have fully entered the cultural ether, making "Drive" ripe for contemporary parody. Check out the video above. Read More: Cannes Review | With "Drive," Nicolas Winding Refn Puts Ryan Gosling in the Fast Lane Enter comedian Joey Thompson who happens to be a dead ringer for Gosling himself and his fan-made sequel trailer for "Drive" entitled "Drive 2: The Uber Years," in which Thompson plays the Gosling character only,...

If the Houser Brothers of Rockstar Games, the creative team behind the famous (or infamous depending on how prude you are) Grand Theft Auto series, relented and allowed a film version of the GTA series to be produced, and if they somehow maintained enough control over the project to inject some artistic fortitude into it and make it more than yet another Hollywood cash-in on a popular video game franchise, Drive might be the result.
In fact in a lot of ways, Drive is sort of an amalgam of the Playstation 2 trilogy of the Grand Theft Auto series. The movie takes place in Los Angeles (like most of Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas), has hot pink opening titles and uses synthesizer-heavy 1980's dance club music (a la Grand Theft Auto:Vice City), and for the first half of the film, has an almost totally silent protagonist who gets involved with...

(My Drive review from Cannes re-published as the film is released in the UK today)
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
For me, Nicolas Winding Refn’s new movie Drive, which premiered in competition last night to a responsive crowd in Cannes, only truly works for the first half or maybe 2/3rd’s of it’s running time. It’s only interesting when it’s a Steve McQueen-like, very precisely told, quiet and meticulously directed car crime thriller that refuses the urge to break the realms of plausibility.
The rest sadly is a mess – Refn inexcusably transforming a smart and lean thriller into a ramped up Nicolas Cage-style Grindhouse movie that forgets all the good motoring that’s built up in the first half for diverting and excessive blood exploitations and cheesy one-liners and cheap cliches and it’s painful to see it happen before your eyes.

There's 100,000 streets. You don't need to know the route."
The Driver is alone in a hotel room. Looking out over the city at night, negotiating on a cel phone he'll abandon immediately. We never learn his name. We don't need to know it.
His face is Ryan Gosling's, but even so it's a less familiar landscape than you'd think. With Drive, the actor erases any doubts (were there any?) that he's the most exciting young movie star on this side of the Atlantic. For the driver, his face has taken on a new mask-like stillness which twice in Nicolas Winding Refn's brilliant new movie, is covered (redundantly) by an actual mask. There is no knowing this driver; if we were given his name we'd forget it anyway or doubt its authenticity. Even the underscore, a brilliantly retro synth score, that memorably features Kavinksy's "Nightcall" just as we're being...

Drive
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Ron Pearlman, Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac and Kaden Leos
Release Date: September 16, 2011
Immediately are we distanced from the majority of groggy thrillers as director Nicolas Winding Refn, working in astonishing form (he won best director award at this year’s Cannes Festival), achieves insistent thrills from the beginning of his new film Drive. Unfurling from the opening credits onward is an excellence and master-class in control and discipline that cannot be disputed. It is a simple chase scene, a getaway driver discreetly navigating a silver Chevy Impala away from the authorities, set during a gorgeously neon-lit night in the heart of Los Angeles. Refn establishes an atmosphere so distinctive that it calls to mind Mulholland Dr., a great atmospheric film with the same vindictiveness Drive has of Hollywood. Drive’s atmosphere is one that glorifies and harbors masculinity,...

Scott Hopko from Hopko designs sent us this awesome poster he created for the Nicolas Winding Refn directed film Drive, which stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Bryan Cranston.
This was one of my favorite movies of the year, you can read out review of the film here, and if you haven't seen the trailer yet click here. The movie comes out today September 16th and I highly suggest you watch it!
Here's the synopsis:
Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a stunt driver by day and a getaway driver by night. Doesn’t matter what job he does, Driver is most comfortable behind the wheel of a car. Shannon (Bryan Cranston) is part mentor, part manager for Driver. Since he knows what a great talent Driver is behind the wheel, he either peddles him to film and television directors in the entertainment business or thieves who need an accomplished getaway driver,...

You can compare "Drive" to a lot of other movies. In my interview with its director, Nicolas Winding Refn, he referenced Grimms' fairy tales. I've read star Ryan Gosling refer to it as a violent John Hughes movie. Others have liken it to the poetic yet masculine works of Walter Hill and Michael Mann. All of these comparisons are apt, but what's great about "Drive" is the way it bears so many obvious inspirations without really feeling like any of them. It is its own unique blend of classical tropes and modern filmmaking.
Gosling stars as a man known only as Driver. He's not much of a talker but he's a hell of a wheelman. "You put this kid behind the wheel," his boss Shannon (Bryan Cranston) says "and there's nothing he can't do." By day, Driver works for Shannon as a mechanic and occasional stuntman for Hollywood movies. By night,...

Oscar Isaac
As far as I’m concerned, up-and-coming Latino hottie Oscar Isaac takes the studmuffin cake over current A-lister/former Disney kid Ryan Gosling any day of the week. Which isn’t to say that Gosling’s unattractive; far from it. It’s simply that Isaac, with his olive skin, dark bedroom eyes, and curly black hair, falls more in line with my own personal heartthrob ideal.
You can see both actors, not incidentally, in the new action film Drive, in which Gosling plays “Driver," a Hollywood stunt car operator who loans himself out as a wheelman for criminals on the side. Isaac, in a smaller role, portrays the quirkily-named Standard. He’s the husband of Irene (Carey Mulligan), Driver’s pretty young neighbor down the hall who’s been raising her young son Benicio (Kaden Leos) alone ever since Standard got thrown in the slammer.

Ryan Gosling in Drive
Photo: FilmDistrict Note: This review was originally published on May 19, 2011 after I saw it at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. I am reprinting it here as it hits theaters this weekend.
As blood dripped down Ryan Gosling's face in director Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive the Cannes audience couldn't help but laugh. It wasn't a laugh as a result of something funny, it was a laugh of relief as this year's Cannes Film Festival has offered an abundance of diversity and Drive appears to be the aggressive, head-stomping capstone. But as violent and intense as this film can be, it has its share of honest laughs and silent moments, making for the best film I saw at this year's festival. As far as who deserves the credit -- sit back -- there are a lot of kudos to be handed out.

Nicolas Winding Refn.s Drive is simply perfect. Not since Michael Mann.s 1981 crime drama Thief, has a film of this type had such an impact, and dare I say Drive is even better? Yes, I do. Every woman.s newest sweetheart, Ryan Gosling (Crazy Stupid Love) is Driver, a nameless Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver. He lives simply, adhering to a strict set of rules, which keeps him at the top of his game, out of prison. and alive. On the surface, he.s a pretty boy with a quiet disposition, but hidden within is a strong, efficient survivor with the capacity to be brutal when necessary.

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn Writers: Hossein Amini (screenplay), James Sallis (novel) Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Kaden Leos, James Biberi Still rivers run deep, or so the saying goes, and there are few anti-heroes -- especially in ultra-violent thrillers -- who remain as cool, calm and collected as the unnamed stunt driver and garage mechanic referred to only as Driver (Ryan Gosling). Eerily void of emotion, Driver utilizes his stoic composure to convey his toughness and intimidate others. Like several of Clint Eastwood's silver screen personas -- especially his collaborations with Sergio Leone -- Driver speaks sparingly yet bluntly. Outfitted in the same costume throughout the film -- a white bomber jacket with a yellow scorpion embroidered on the back -- Driver accessorizes with a toothpick in his mouth. (Have you heard the story about the scorpion and the frog?...

Ryan Gosling is having a great year. The thinking man.s heartthrob gave a memorable performance in .Crazy, Stupid, Love. and he is set to steal the spotlight from George Clooney in the upcoming political drama .The Ides of March..
In .Drive,. Gosling, a gifted risk-taker of an actor, delivers a subdued yet fully realized portrayal of a man who works as a Hollywood stunt driver by day and a getaway wheelman at night.
Much like Ryan O.Neal in 1978.s .The Driver,. Gosling.s character is simply called Driver. He.s a man with no name and he rarely speaks. We understand his psyche from what he chooses to wear . a satin jacket with a logo of a golden scorpion.
The notion of masculinity is taken for a spin in .Drive.. Driver.s macho character is presented with the pulsating beat of the Eurosynth-heavy soundtrack, and the title sequence...

Title: Drive Directed By: Nicolas Winding Refn Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Kaden Leos Quite clearly director Nicolas Winding Refn worked hard to bring Drive to life in the most appropriate way possible and, in turn, we get a movie that requires a degree of personal investment. Drive isn’t the type of film that lays out its plot points and lets you follow along, rather something that gives you incredible access to the main players, compelling you to become part of the action. At times, the need to decipher the details can be frustrating, but Refn duly rewards you for...

"Drive," from director Nicolas Winding Refn and leading man Ryan Gosling, is easily one of my most anticipated movies coming out in the next few months. A thriller about a Hollywood stunt driver by day, getaway wheelman by night, featuring an all-star cast with guys like Bryan Cranston and Ron Perlman? Yeah, I'm on board.
But the new official poster for "Drive" sells something that's… well, a bit prettier than what I'd been led to believe about the movie. For a fierce, hard R-rated flick, this "Drive" poster is a little bit… ah… pink, I guess.
Check it out for yourself past the jump and see what you think.

Today we have a new poster for “Drive“, the Nicolas Winding Refn-directed drama that stars Ryan Gosling, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman and Carey Mulligan.
Gosling stars in Drive as a quiet, unassuming young Los Angeleno — Hollywood stunt man by day, getaway driver by night — who falls for the young mother (Mulligan) who lives next door. Only problem is, her husband’s fresh out of jail, and he needs help with one last job.
Here’s the official plot synopsis for” Drive”:
