Poppy Harlow, who has been with CNN since 2008, is departing the network. Harlow announced her decision in a memo to colleagues.
She was offered a new role following the cancellation of CNN This Morning, but instead decided to leave, the network confirmed.
Harlow was co-host, along with Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins, of CNN’s rebranded morning show, CNN This Morning, when it launched in November, 2022.
Lemon was ousted from the network the following April, and Collins left for her primetime show the following June. Phil Mattingly joined as co-host, but the show itself was dropped earlier this year in a retool of the network morning schedule. There still is a CNN This Morning with anchor Kasie Hunt, but it has an earlier start time of 5 a.m.
On X/Twitter, Harlow wrote of her tenure, “Loved every moment.” In her memo, Harlow wrote, “I have been inspired by you...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned former Fox News’ host Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump after senators approved a $95 million foreign aid package that would send funds to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
Under the law, the United States will send $60 billion in support to Ukraine, $17 billion for Israel, $9 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza and $8 billion to Taiwan.
“I think the demonization of Ukraine began by Tucker Carlson, who, in my opinion, ended up – or he should have been all along – which is interviewing Vladimir Putin,” McConnell told reporters during a news conference.
“And so, he had an enormous audience, which convinced a lot of rank-and-file Republicans that maybe this was a mistake,” he added. “I think the former president had sort of mixed reviews on it. We all felt the border was a complete disaster, myself included.”
The Senate minority leader went on to talk about the negotiation phases.

CNN anchor Kate Bolduan got an interesting new job in 2022 when she was named the anchor of “5 Things,” a quick-hit open-the-day summary of top stories that was made available for streaming audiences. Two years later, she appears poised to get it again.
Bolduan will lead a test run of “5 Things” starting Monday on CNN Max, the live-streamed news service available on Max, the streaming venue backed by corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery. The program’s reappearance after a long absence marks the latest chapter in a concept that many at the news outlet seem to love, but just can’t figure out how to transform into a sustainable video franchise. CNN already operates a podcast and newsletter tied to the format.
CNN has reason to try “5 Things” anew. It was one of the more popular offerings made available on CNN+, an ambitious but short-lived subscription-based streaming service launched in 2022 in...

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to appear on the presidential ballot in Utah after having formally filed with the state’s elections office on January 3.
Utah is the first state the Kennedy campaign succeeded in putting his name on the ballot. This state has also been a primary focus of the campaign in recent weeks as it helps to develop the plan to put Kennedy on the ballot in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Kennedy showed gratitude to the campaign staff and volunteers after filing his petition at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City. He thanked them for helping gather the 1,000 signatures necessary for independent candidates to file for ballot access in Utah. At the end of December 2023, the Salt Lake County Clerk’s office confirmed the campaign’s signatures.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. once again spread unfounded claims regarding the Covid-19 and the vaccine.
“So you have gained notoriety for your skepticism about vaccines,” CNN anchor Kasie Hunt told Kennedy during a recent interview.
“And over the summer, in an interview, you said, quote, ‘There’s no vaccine that is, you know, safe and effective.’ Do you still believe that?” she asked.
“I never said –,” Kennedy stated before Hunt cut him off.
“So, stop me, we have the clip. Please play the clip,” Hunt declared.
“Play the whole clip,” Kennedy requested.
Hunt then played the clip of him and Lex Fridman talking during a recorded interview on July 5.
Fridman and Kennedy discussed that the media has been slamming Rfk Jr. for being anti-vaccine. Kennedy then claimed that he is not anti-vaccine but is instead “pro-safe vaccine.”
“Difficult question. Can you name any vaccines that you think are good?” Fridman asked.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, found himself on the defensive as he addressed allegations of antisemitism when he perpetuated baseless claims about Covid-19 and vaccines.
In an interview with CNN’s Kasie Hunt, Kennedy, a vocal opponent of Covid-19 vaccines and public health measures meant to curb the virus’s spread, tried to refute accusations that his previous remarks that linked Covid-19 to Jewish ancestry were antisemitic.
In July, Kennedy stated that Covid-19 was “ethnically targeted” to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese individuals. While he acknowledged that some people might have been “disturbed” by his comments, Kennedy maintained that they were not antisemitic. He explained his hesitation to discuss the issue publicly and cited concerns that antisemitic individuals might exploit the information.
Kennedy also defended his remarks from 2022, in which he compared Covid-19 lockdowns to Nazi Germany and suggested that one could flee to Switzerland. At the time,...

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN+ may not have worked, but perhaps CNN on Max will.
Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to launch new original programs from CNN that will stream on its Max streaming service, according to three people familiar with the matter. Jim Sciutto, Bianna Golodryga, Rahel Solomon and Christiane Amanpour are among the CNN journalists who have been tapped to take part in the effort, according to two of these people.
CNN and Max could make an announcement about the project as soon as Thursday, according to these people, and would likely provide greater detail. A spokeswoman for CNN declined to comment and a spokesman for Max declined to comment.
Warner Bros. Discovery scuttled the nascent CNN+ streaming service within days of taking over CNN’s corporate parent, once known as WarnerMedia, from AT&T in 2022. Now the company seems more eager to make CNN programming available to cord-cutters, perhaps realizing that the cable-news giant,...

CNN has announced a dramatic shake-up of its programming schedule, including new anchors for the morning, daytime, primetime, and weekend shows. Inside Politics Sunday host Abby Phillip will anchor the news network’s 10 pm hour on weekdays, with chief legal analyst Laura Coates anchoring the 11 pm slot. Elsewhere, chief national affairs analyst Kasie Hunt will anchor Early Start following the departure of the show’s long-time host Christine Romans last month. CNN This Morning is also receiving a makeover following the recent controversy that saw Don Lemon fired after making sexist remarks. The morning show’s long-time co-host Kaitlan Collins also exited the program to host the network’s 9 pm hour, replacing Chris Cuomo, who was fired in 2021 amid an inquiry into whether he aided his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Phil Mattingly, CNN’s chief White House correspondent, will now co-host CNN This Morning alongside the show’s long-time anchor Poppy Harlow.

Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have bigger digital plans for Charles Barkley and Anderson Cooper.

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie compared Donald Trump and his allies to the infamous Corleone family in “The Godfather” saga — but “with no experience.”
“It’s pretty brazen,” Christie said of the new obstruction charges brought against the former president while appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “These guys were acting like the Corleones with no experience.”
The new charges in the classified documents case, filed by special counsel Jack Smith last week, allege that Trump attempted to destroy evidence at his Mar-a-Lago estate after receiving a subpoena, accusing the former President of pressuring maintenance employee Carlos De Oliveira to delete surveillance footage alongside his valet Walt Nauta, who Christie likened to Fredo Corleone, the character played by John Cazale in “The Godfather” saga.

CNN may have cleared its schedule of “Reliable Sources,” but it is making lots of room for “The Source.”
The new program, which will be based in New York and is slated to debut Monday, July 10, at 9 p.m. eastern, is a new hour built around up-and-coming anchor Kaitlan Collins, who has, in the space of just a few years, vaulted from White House correspondent to morning co-anchor to primetime personality. When Jake Tapper launches his new primetime show on CNN Tuesday at 9 p.m., he will have to turn from the intensely serious (an interview with President Joe Biden) to the sublime (a chat with actor Dwayne Johnson). It will be just one of many pivots the anchor will have to make in days to come.
The version of “CNN Tonight” that Tapper will lead through the midterm elections aims to provide “thoughtful, no-bulls—t context” around some of the biggest stories in the news cycle, according to a person familiar with the matter, and won’t tether the journalist to the CNN programs for which he is known best, “The Lead” and “State of the Union.” Viewers should expect Tapper to focus on fewer stories and to spend more time digging into them, and to hold forth with newsmakers and heads of state as well as authors, actors and figures of popular culture.

CNN+ is gone, but some of the big-name anchors who were hired for the service appear to be sticking around for a while.
Chris Licht, the new chairman and CEO at the Warner Bros. Discovery news operation, gave indications at a town hall meeting on Thursday that he intended to find places for some of the popular names that were lured to the company with the promise of new programs for CNN.+ The subscription-based streaming service was scuttled abruptly by the company’s new parent after it completed its acquisition of WarnerMedia from AT&T. Three people familiar with the conversations at the meeting said Licht indicated he wanted to find places for Chris Wallace, the one-time Fox News anchor, and Audie Cornish, the NPR veteran, appearing in parts of the company’s portfolio. He also said Kasie Hunt, who was hired from NBC News, has been appearing in current CNN programming.

CNN+ will be discontinued on Thursday, two days earlier than was initially announced last week.
An email to subscribers pegged the end date as April 28, according to The Verge, and a support page on CNN.com also said that the service will discontinued then.
“After April 28, 2022, the CNN+ daily and weekly shows, Interview Club, and the on-demand library of CNN Original Series and Films will no longer be available,” the message reads.
Active subscribers will receive a full refund, and subscriptions will be officially canceled on that date.
Last week, CNN’s new parent Warner Bros. Discovery announced that they planned to close CNN+ as of the end of the month, April 30 — a stunning move given that the service was not even a month old and had just launched on March 28. CNN poured nearly 100 million into development costs for the streaming service, in addition to huge expenses on promotion.

Updated, with comment from Chris Wallace and Kasie Hunt: CNN+ is on its way out, but the new leadership at Warner Bros Discovery has given every indication that there could still be a future for some of its programming.
Much of the speculation has centered on the future of the highest-profile hire for the streaming service, Chris Wallace, who stunned his Fox News colleagues in December to announce that he was leaving. His CNN+ show, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, has made news on a number of occasions with his probing sit-downs with the likes of Bob Iger and Jen Psaki, and it’s not too much of a leap to imagine him moving to CNN.
There has been some anticipation that Wallace, with his show’s extended and probing interviews, would be most likely to get such a berth. CNN has had a big hole to fill at 9 p.

Updated: CNN+, the news network’s expensive venture into subscription streaming, will shut down at the end of the month.
The heavily promoted service launched just weeks ago, on March 29, but almost immediately there were reports of lower-than-expected subscription numbers and plans for cutbacks under new CNN parent Warner Bros. Discovery. Its demise makes it perhaps the shortest lived of all subscription streaming ventures, a lesser lifespan than Quibi, the platform that ran for about seven months in 2020.
Chris Licht, the new chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, said that they have decided to “focus our investment on CNN’s core news-gathering operations and in further building CNN Digital. This is not a decision about quality; we appreciate all of the work, ambition and creativity that went into building CNN+, an organization with terrific talent and compelling programming. But our customers and CNN will be best served with a simpler streaming choice.

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down CNN+ as of April 30, marking one of the company’s first significant maneuvers since completing the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery less than two weeks ago.
The decision puts an abrupt end to an ambitious and aggressive venture that people familiar with the matter say rankled David Zaslav, the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, from the start. Zaslav was annoyed by the decision of Jason Kilar, the former CEO of WarnerMedia when it was owned by AT&T, to launch CNN+ just weeks before Discovery was set to take over operations. But he was unable to communicate with WarnerMedia management, owing to legal boundaries surrounding the merger process.
“This decision is in line with Wbd’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy,” said Chris Licht, the incoming CEO of CNN, in a statement. “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides...

A recent decision by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery will make it difficult to add viewers to CNN+.
Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to suspend external marketing for the recently launched subscription streaming-news service, according to a person familiar with the venture, making the task of luring new subscribers exponentially more difficult. CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to make executives available to discuss the matter, which was previously reported by Axios.
And yet, life continues apace for the anchors and correspondents tasked with producing the programs for the new venue, which launched three weeks ago and was seen as CNN’s stab at bringing younger, cord-cutting audiences under its massive news umbrella at a time when more viewers are migrating to streaming video. None of the CNN+ shows have been canceled, according to three people familiar with the matter. A program for Audie Cornish, the celebrated NPR journalist who...

One reward for a successful journalism career at The Washington Post might be a move into a different medium, like NBC News. Leigh Ann Caldwell is reversing the dynamic.
Caldwell, who has been with NBC News since 2014, will join The Washington Post as one of the two writers on its morning newsletter, “The Early 202,” as well as an interviewer of newsmakers and Congressional leaders on Washington Post Live, the news outlet’s streaming-video forum. She has covered Capitol Hill for NBC News since 2019, writing articles and appearing on camera on both NBC News programs as well as MSNBC.
While the notion of a journalist working in text and video simultaneously might seem like an aberration, the fact is that the ability to toggle between media venues has fast become de rigueur across the industry. “I would say that it is all reporting,” says Philip Rucker, deputy national editor at The Washington Post,...
