You might recognize Taylor Sheridan from his role as David Hale on "Sons of Anarchy" or Travis Wheatley in Paramount+'s "Yellowstone," but the actor's work on screen is arguably not as impressive as the stacked résumé of films and television shows that he has written.
Sheridan began acting in the 1990s and took on a number of small roles in various TV shows and movies throughout the remainder of the decade into the 2000s. But his career as an actor never quite took off, which is when he discovered his talent and passion for screenwriting. After writing the pilot for "Mayor of Kingstown" in 2011, he knew that's exactly what he was meant to do. "I was a fair actor, but that's all I was ever going to be," Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in a June 2023 interview. "Hollywood will tell you what you're supposed to do if you listen.

So Cold the River opens with former hotshot documentary director Erica Shaw making a slideshow for someone’s funeral. It’s about all the work she can get since one of her films proved a convicted killer’s innocence. Only for him to slaughter his entire family as soon as he was released.
One of those slide shows leads to her being hired by Alyssa Bradford to shoot a biography of her father, Campbell Bradford. With a bottle of Pluto Water, mineral water with alleged healing properties as her only clue, she heads to the town of West Braden Indiana to begin shooting. Once there she quickly realizes this isn’t going to be as easy as it seems when Anne McKinney the self-appointed local historian...

The Fire This Time: Sheridan’s Neo-Western Arrives Lifeless, Overbaked
Casting is an important part of the filmmaking process, and sometimes the highest profile celebrity headliner is more a curse than a blessing. Such is the first immediately apparent issue with Those Who Wish Me Dead, the third directorial outing for the multifaceted Taylor Sheridan, an adaptation of the novel by Michael Koryta, scripted by the author and Charles Leavitt before Sheridan inherited the material, starring Angelina Jolie as a Montana smoke jumper.
The conjoining issue is a revisionist narrative cobbling together too many tangents without bothering to deliver any characterization, the resulting tempest devolving into the signature violent face-offs prized by Sheridan but without any emotional investment and, therefore, no real payoff.…...

Angelina Jolie’s survival action thriller “Those Who Wish Me Dead” didn’t do much to revive the North American box office. The Warner Bros. film, which debuted simultaneously on the streaming service HBO Max, took in a paltry $2.8 million in its opening weekend.
The movie’s hybrid release on HBO Max likely isn’t the reason “Those Who Wish Me Dead” sold hardly any tickets; “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Mortal Kombat” were both recent Warner Bros. films that were able to generate decent box office revenues despite being offered concurrently on a streaming service.
As movie theaters attempt to rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic, family films and CGI spectacles have been popular options to see on the big screen. Gritty dramas geared toward adult audiences haven’t been performing as well, and mediocre reviews for “Those Who Wish Me Dead” didn’t help drum up interest.

Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead — adapted from Michael Koryta’s 2014 novel of the same name — starts as three stories before whittling its way down to one. In the first, a smokejumper is haunted by memories of a burn gone wrong, in which she and other firefighters leapt into the wilds of a flame-swept Montana forest only for the wind to behave differently than they expected, and for a trio of young boys, running to be rescued, to succumb before their eyes. It’s the kind of job...

Angelina Jolie is Hannah, a hard drinking and reckless fire fighter in Montana, a ‘smoke jumper’ who parachutes into out-of-control forest fires. After a tragedy occurs on her watch, she is relegated to observation work in a high-rise fire tower. Meanwhile, an accountant with proof of crimes on a mob boss is on the run with his son Connor (Finn Little), being pursued by professional assassins (Aiden Gillen and Nicholas Hoult). The son manages to escape, and Hannah finds him wandering the woods, where it is now her responsibility to protect him.

Reaffirming Angelina Jolie’s interest in efficient action storytelling, co-writer/director Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead, adapted from Michael Koryta’s 2014 novel, is a lean throwback to the type of muscular ’90s and early ’00s films that eschewed world-building and IP in favor of streamlined set-pieces. While the film still telegraphs the brand of gruff masculinity that made Sheridan your dad’s favorite screenwriter/showrunner, this time grafted onto Jolie’s hard-drinking smoke jumper Hannah, Those Who Wish Me Dead works mainly because it moves quickly and effectively. Distilling plot and character down to basic archetypes, Sheridan’s film is less concerned with the weighty thematic issues that sometimes bogged down his previous work, and is more than happy to showcase Jolie ridiculously contending with the compounding issue of simultaneously fighting assassins and a raging wildfire.

Based on a novel by Michael Koryta, Those Who Wish Me Dead is the second feature film directed by Taylor Sheridan, the writer and actor whose previous writing and directorial effort was Wind River with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Sheridan has also penned acclaimed screenplays for both Sicario films and Hell or High Water, in addition to co-creating and writing the TV series Yellowstone.
Those Who Wish Me Dead shares several common elements with all of these works, in that it is largely set in a vast rural area of the United States–in this case Montana–and it loosely follows the structure of a classic Western updated for the modern era. But while Sheridan tries to capture a sense of foreboding and danger from the start, and stacks the story with a formidable list of actors, the film never quite attains the urgency or connection with its characters...

Summer blockbuster season slowly gets underway as the “Saw” spinoff and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” enter theaters
The summer box office season is slowly getting underway as Lionsgate’s “Spiral” becomes the first contender to take on the slowly recovering theatrical market this weekend.
With a reported $20 million production budget and Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson starring, the spinoff to the “Saw” horror franchise is the perfect kind of low-risk/high-reward film to brave a theater landscape where approximately 35% of cinemas in North America are still closed. With such a low bar to clear to turn a profit, “Spiral” should be on track to easily finish in the green if it meets independent projections of a $11 million-$13 million opening, though a $8 million-$10 million opening would also put in in a solid position to recoup.
Lionsgate could join “Demon Slayer” distributor Funimation as only the second studio aside from...

A simple but smoldering throwback to the days when all you needed to make a decent action film was a big star, a striking location, and a few cold henchman carrying those fancy machine guns with the red laser sights, Taylor Sheridan’s . In 2021, it can’t help but feel like an unintended anachronism; as if Sheridan aimed for something that matched the gravitas he wrote into “Sicario” or the dark portent he blew into “Wind River,” fell very far short, and landed in a pillowy bed of old popcorn instead. That may not be high praise, but it sure as hell isn’t a complaint either.

The “Me” in “Those Who Wish Me Dead” is 12-year-old Connor Casserly (Finn Little), who’s been riding in the passenger seat of his father’s car when a pair of trained assassins pop up along the forest road and perforate the windshield with bullets. The car smashes through the guardrail and plows down the slope, hitting a tree. Dying dad (Jake Weber) orders his son to get out and find someone he can trust (Angelina Jolie plays “Someone He Can Trust”), and Connor goes scrambling off into the woods as the two men come back to finish the job. Except the job — snuffing any and everyone who might know something about the crime they’re trying to cover up — is far from done.

Angry, boozy and haunted by her past, a smoke-jumper faces unexpected dangers in this fierce action film set in the Montana wilderness
Angelina Jolie is back in a meaty action role for this watchable western thriller: playing a firefighter in the Montana wilderness, of all the wildly improbable things. But her natural queenly hauteur, with wide imperious gaze and bee-stung lips, always creates the impression that despite her respirator, axe, smoke-smudged T-shirt and jeans, some functionary is at any moment going to stumble through the flame and debris with her crown on a plump cushion, ready to restore Angelina to the Romanov throne.
Those Who Wish Me Dead is freely adapted from the 2014 bestseller from Michael Koryta, who has written the screenplay with director Taylor Sheridan, a film-maker renowned for tense, taut pictures such as Sicario, Wind River and Hell or High Water. Another film for which he wrote the screenplay,...

Her firefighter struggles to save a young witness from very bad gangsters and a blazing inferno
Every student who’s ever taken a creative writing course has heard the phrases “man versus man” and “man versus nature,” but one imagines filmmaker Taylor Sheridan circling them both in his notebook and jotting, “Yes. This.” in the margin. His work as writer and/or director of films like “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” as well as the TV show “Yellowstone,” often sets his characters against nature, both in the compositional and confrontational sense.
Sheridan’s very much in his wheelhouse in “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” a tale of a firefighter seeking redemption, a sheriff and his wife fighting for survival, and a young witness trying to elude his captors, and all of them coping with a massive forest fire in Big Sky country. The stakes are high and the...

A multiple Emmy and BAFTA Award nominee, who has served as a composer and conductor on more than 70 feature films, Tyler boarded the project after collaborating with Sheridan on his acclaimed Paramount Network drama, Yellowstone.
Sheridan turned to Tyler, given his ability to tap into both intense action and genuine emotion through his music.

13. Those Who Wish Me Dead (Taylor Sheridan)
After scripting the acclaimed Sicario and Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan embarked on his second directorial feature, Wind River, which I was fairly mixed on at its Sundance premiere. However, I am curious about his follow-up, Those Who Wish Me Dead, starring Angelina Jolie, Nicholas Hoult, Aidan Gillen, Finn Little, Jon Bernthal, and Tyler Perry. Based on Michael Koryta’s novel, it’s a survival thriller set amongst the Montana wilderness as a fire blazes.
