Image
The Beths have returned with the shimmering new single “Metal” and announced a North American headlining tour.

The new track basks in jangle rock, as singer Elizabeth Stokes sings, “So you need the metal in your blood to keep you alive” alongside Jonathan Pearce’s bright 12-string guitar. “I think we ended up with an arrangement that embodies the frenetic intricacy of an engine in action,” Stokes said in a statement. “There’s a lot going on, until there isn’t.” Watch the video below, where the New Zealand rockers...

A Neil Young Tribute With a Heart of Gold
Image
Neil Young isn’t just one of the most covered songwriters of all time, he’s also one of the most tributed. There have been several albums of people doing his songs released over the decades, first and most famously the 1989 LP The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young, populated by artists from the then-ascendant alt-rock generation such as Nick Cave, the Flaming Lips, the Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr., fans who were just as admiring of Young’s contrarian swerves as they were of his beloved 1970s chestnuts. One of...

Fiona Apple Offers Moving Cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”: Stream
Image
Fiona Apple has contributed a cover of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” for Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I, a new tribute album out today.

Apple provides a faithful, sturdy rendition of the Young classic, not altering the arrangement much and focusing on replicating the song’s mode of reflection and yearning. Apple’s vocals never stray away from her warm alto range, contrasting with Young’s original songbird-like croon on the original. And as always with Fiona Apple, her emotive command of language brings weight to every word on “Heart of Gold.” Listen to Apple’s cover of the song below.

Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I arrives today as part one of a two-part tribute album series, with proceeds benefitting The Bridge School. The project includes Young covers courtesy of Courtney Barnett, Eddie Vedder,...

Patti Smith Has the Power: See Bruce Springsteen, Michael Stipe, Karen O Salute Icon at Tribute Show
Image
If anyone doubted the ongoing relevance of Patti Smith’s work, that answer arrived at the next-to-last moment at “People Have the Power: A Celebration of Patti Smith,” a boldface-name-heavy tribute concert Wednesday night at Carnegie Hall. Over the course of two-and-a-half hours, a caravan of singers, musician and actors — some associated with her, some not necessarily — sang and read Smith’s words, an ongoing testament to the still hypnotic grip of her songs and poems.

The odds that Smith herself would participate were pretty high; after all, she was...

The concert doubled as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Smith’s landmark album, Horses, and a charity benefit for music education for underserved youth. Eddie Vedder Shares Faithful Cover of Neil Young’s ‘Needle and the Damage Done’
Image
Eddie Vedder and Stephen Marley have shared new covers of two Neil Young classics from Harvest for an upcoming tribute album benefitting the Bridge School.

While “Rockin’ in the Free World” has become a Pearl Jam live staple, for his contribution, Vedder covered “The Needle and The Damage Done,” Young’s devastating 1972 song about heroin addiction. The Pearl Jam frontman plays the cover pretty straight (not that that’s a bad thing), with just acoustic guitar accompaniment and a vocal performance that’s distinctly reminiscent of Young’s soft, quivering tenor.

Eddie Vedder Covers Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done”: Stream
Image
A cover of Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” by Eddie Vedder has been released as the latest single from the upcoming compilation album Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Volume I, arriving today along with a cover of “Old Man” by Stephen Marley.

Vedder’s take on “The Needle and the Damage Done” conveys the hard-earned wisdom of the 1972 composition, and showcases the Pearl Jam singer’s signature gravelly baritone. It also isn’t the first time he’s sung the song — Pearl Jam first covered it in 1995, and it’s appeared a few times in their setlists since then. In 2009, Vedder dedicated a rendition of it to Michael Jackson, two months after the pop star’s death.

As for Marley’s cover of “Old Man,” it augments the rootsy sound of the original with a easy-flowing reggae vibe, with the pièce de résistance being the warm,...

Shamir Says Goodbye With a Little Help From Their Friends on Final Album, ‘Ten’
Image
Philadelphia singer-songwriter Shamir has dropped a new song, “Neverwannago,” from their final solo album, Ten, which will arrive this spring via Kill Rock Stars.

For their swan song, Shamir (who uses he/she/they pronouns) decided to honor the many friends who’ve helped, supported, and shaped their musical journey. The album comprises 10 tracks written by those closest to Shamir, based on unused demos and tossed-aside songs that Shamir has given new life.

“Neverwannago” is a pristine hit of Nineties-style alt-pop that balances sun-drenched vibes with just the right amount of melancholy.

Benjamin Booker Is Looking for a Good Life. He Might Have Found It
Image
Benjamin Booker’s years in Los Angeles, at the tail end of the 2010s, were filled with exploration and experimentation. The singer-songwriter lived for a while in Echo Park, but spent a lot of his time downtown. He’d grab his skateboard, coast down Glendale Boulevard, and spend the day taking pictures, visiting museums, or hanging out (he eventually just moved downtown).

There was a Kerry James Marshall retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2017 that he found “eye-opening” and “life-changing.” “Everything is done with purpose,” Booker recalls thinking.

The show is based on the novel "Lady Jane Grey" by Eva Ibbotson and follows the story of Jane Grey, who becomes the queen of England at the age of 16. The series features a mix of romance, drama, and political intrigue, set in the 16th century. Here are the songs featured in each episode of My Lady Jane: Episode 1 Songs:

Warning: Spoilers for My Lady Jane

Prime Video's My Lady Jane retells history with a new look at Tudor-style Englands politics and music. The series official soundtrack features only nine covers of famous songs. However, the show makes specific use of many other songs, most of them being notably recent. David Byrne and Devo Unearth 27 Year-Old Collaboration “Empire” for Abortion Access Benefit: Stream
Image
David Byrne and Devo have unveiled the contribution to Noise for Now Vol. 2, an abortion access and reproductive rights benefit compilation landing everywhere on June 21st.

The song, “Empire,” was originally written by Byrne and Devo for Byrne’s collaboration-heavy 1997 solo album, Feelings. Two different collaborations came from those sessions — “Wicked Little Doll,” which ended up making the album, and “Empire,” which they’ve now unearthed for the Noise for Now comp.

With marching drums, regal horns, and a military-esque flair, Byrne and Devo satirize the American capitalist empire. Though there is a majestic air to the song, beneath the bright hues are some more sinister tones. “The strong alone will survive,” Byrne sings, less a promise and more a harrowing threat. Stream “Empire” below.

“‘Empire’ is an ironic capitalist fascist anthem and, at the time, I thought our version was just too mean and caustic for release,” Byrne said in a press release.

Where to Next? Predicting Beyoncé’s Act III
Image
“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

On her latest album,...

Faye Webster, the War on Drugs, David Byrne, and Devo Share Rarities for Abortion Access Fundraiser
Image
Faye Webster, the War on Drugs, and David Byrne and Devo have contributed tracks to the second Noise for Now benefit compilation, which will raise money for independent abortion providers across the country via the Keep Our Clinics campaign.

The album announcement pointedly coincides with the return of abortion rights to the Supreme Court today, March 26. The court will hear arguments for a case regarding the availability and accessibility of mifepristone, an Fda-approved drug that’s frequently used in abortions. If the Court rolls back Fda regulations on the drug,...

Sharon Van Etten Shares “Close to You” from Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers Soundtrack: Stream
Image
Sharon Van Etten shared a new single called “Close to You,” which she co-wrote with Courtney Barnett for the official soundtrack to the upcoming Apple Original drama series The Buccaneers.

Equal parts eerie and alluring, “Close to You” sees Van Etten infuse her classic Americana-inspired rock with a heavy wash of dreamy reverb, cooing lines like: “I got a taste of being with you, don’t wanna waste more time,” “put on your best dress and get out of your head,” and “get away and I’ll stay close to you.”

The song was produced by Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who also produced the entire soundtrack: “It was a truly incredible experience working with this group of uniquely talented artists,” she said in a press release. “Everyone brought their A-game and taught me something invaluable about the creative process. Witnessing these artists map each character’s journey through song was...

Don’t underestimate Noah Kahan at the Grammys
Image
Noah Kahan has been having a great few months. The folk star has been rapidly rising in public awareness, starting with the release of his acclaimed breakout album, “Stick Season,” released a year ago. Now he has two charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, multiple highbrow collaborations with previous Grammy nominees and winners and the acknowledgement of strong industry players, not to mention the album is still in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Clearly Kahan is doing something right, and people are taking notice. But among those fans of the breakout star, could there be Grammy voters ready to anoint him?

In many ways, Kahan could be considered Grammy bait. He is a folk singer, appealing to the big American roots contingent in the recording academy, but he should also appeal to a big audience of alternative and pop listeners. In that way, he’s similar to...
