Madrid (Spain), May 5 (Ians) Real Betis took a significant step toward securing a place in Europe with a 1-0 win in Bilbao.
Willian Jose’s sixth-minute volley on Thursday night separated the two sides, although Oihan Sancet hit the bar for Athletic Club in the second half, and Claudio Bravo made several crucial saves to frustrate the home side, who deserved at least a point.
Girona moved into seventh place after defeating Mallorca 2-1, thanks to Bernardo Silva’s finish from a loose ball following a free kick.
Vedat Muriqi equalised for Mallorca from the penalty spot with 11 minutes left to play, but Valentin Castellanos’ powerful header gave Girona their third win from three games six minutes from time, reports Xinhua.
Rayo Vallecano still have a chance of qualifying for Europe after a 2-1 win at home to Valladolid, who remain deep in a battle against relegation.

Rio de Janeiro, June 15 (Ians) Eduardo Vargas extended his impressive Copa America scoring run with a second-half header that earned Chile a 1-1 draw with Argentina.
Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead at Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Stadium on Monday by curling a free-kick over the wall and into the top right corner just after the half-hour mark.
Argentina threatened to score again, laying siege to Claudio Bravo's goal, but the two-time world champions were unable to capitalise on their superiority, reports Xinhua.
Vargas made them pay when he nodded home in the 57th minute, reacting fastest after Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez kept out Arturo Vidal's spot-kick.
The Atletico Mineiro forward has now scored 13 Copa America goals and sits joint sixth on the tournament's list of all-time highest scorers.
"We lacked tranquility," Messi said after the match.

Liverpool fans are urging new boss Jurgen Klopp to make a January transfer window swoop for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
According to the Independent, fans on Merseyside have taken to social media to voice their concerns over the performances of current Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet and have pushed the Reds boss to make a move for ter Stegen as his replacement.
With only 4 league appearances to his name in the 18 months since the young German international ‘keeper made the switch to the Nou Camp, ter Stegen is said to be considering his future in Spain in order to secure a place in his country’s Euro 2016 squad.
Barca boss Luis Enrique seemingly doesn’t have the stopper in his plans with Claudio Bravo firmly placed as the La Liga champions number one, with ter Stegen noticeably absent from the recent Club World Cup tournament.

Monaco and Paris St Germain have joined the hunt for Chelsea’s disgruntled goalkeeper, Petr Cech, who was relegated to the bench in favour of Thibaut Courtois for the team’s Premier League victory over Burnley last Monday.
While Jose Mourinho has repeatedly stated his wish for both keepers to stay at the club and fight for their place, the situation is complicated by his need to sell one foreign player from his squad in order to comply with Premier League quotas. Having been Chelsea’s first choice for over a decade, Cech was left disappointed not only to lose his place to his young rival, but also in Mourinho’s refusal to inform him ahead of time. With Cech now 32 years old, Chelsea may see now as the ideal time to cash in on the veteran keeper before his form and value start to decline.

Chelsea overcame Real Sociedad with little difficulty in the final game of their pre-season ahead of next Monday’s Premier League opener against Burnley. Two goals in a thrilling first ten minutes were enough to ensure victory, both coming courtesy of new striker, Diego Costa, signed for £32m from Atletico Madrid over the summer.
An amusingly over the top introduction to the Chelsea squad for 2014/15 preceded kick-off, complete with pyrotechnics to warm the players up in the billowing rain. The biggest applause was reserved for returning hero Didier Drogba (out with an injury tonight but expected to return soon) and newcomer Costa, who justified his reception with a neatly taken goal within a minute. A precise through ball into the box from Ramires found the naturalised Spaniard, who tucked the ball into the far corner of the onrushing Enaut Zubikarai’s goal.
