A shark bit surfer Mark Sumersett in the face at a Volusia County, Florida, beach this week.
“It was the scariest thing I’ve probably ever been through in my life,” Sumersett told Wesh TV. “I’ve been in bad car accidents. Nothing like this.”
He is the seventh person to have been attacked in that area of Florida this year.
He was on a wave at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday at New Smyrna Beach when he jumped into the ocean.
Sumersett did not see the shark as it came towards him.
The shark bit into his face, creating a two-inch laceration in the right half of his face.
Sumersett had worse lacerations in the left half of his face, starting at his eye and ending at his jawline.
He received at least 20 stitches at the local hospital.
“It was pressure, and I’ll tell you that pressure,...

Discovery Channel has landed the perfect host this year for “Shark Week,” none other than a huge fan of all ocean creatures — Aquaman.
Jason Momoa, who in real life dreamed of a career as a marine biologist before Hollywood anointed him an ocean god, is going back to his roots to celebrate all things shark.
“My heart is in the ocean,” Momoa told The Associated Press from Tahiti, moments before taking a trip to swim with some of the apex predators. “Doing ‘Shark Week’ is a no brainer.”

Momoa will be the week’s recurring master of ceremonies, dipping in and out of the channel’s roughly 20 new hours of programs that start Sunday. Episode encores run most nights, too.

“Jaws” fans are hoping to protect sharks rather than hunt them down by rebuilding Orca — the boat that served as the final showdown between Chief Brody and the great white — and using it as a research vessel in the research and conservation of the sea dogs.
A fundraiser started by the fans called “Return of the Orca” is trying to raise $180,000 to turn a New England lobster boat into a new version of the Orca, which will be used by non-profit ocean conservation group Beneath The Waves for research expeditions in Martha’s Vineyard, which inspired Amity Island in “Jaws.”
Joe Alves, production designer for “Jaws,” will team with production partner Chris Crawford to use the same process they adopted in the 1970s to redesign the boat, using original production designs and footage from the film to make the boat look as much like the original Orca as possible.
