To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.
There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.
As with some of the other below-the-line crafts categories, this doesn’t always have a direct correlation with Best Picture,...

Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.
Four of this year’s nominees line-up with Best Picture, with one very notable newcomer to the category.

It’s crunch time for the Oscars. Less than a week away from the ceremony, Gold Derby senior editor Daniel Montgomery and contributors Sam Eckmann and Christopher Tsang join Charlie Bright and Tony Ruiz on the third episode of the podcast “Gold Derby Roundtable with Charlie and Tony” to reveal their final predictions in all 23 categories, as well as recap the Independent Spirit Awards and discuss the effect of the infamous Will Smith slap on the upcoming Oscar ceremony. Watch the in-depth slugfest above.
Quickly discussing what has made headlines last year at the Oscars with Smith slapping Chris Rock, along with the release of Rock’s new Netflix stand-up special, all parties agree that the awards cycle has come full circle with this incident and while it will likely be mentioned in host Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, it’s had its moment in the sun for quite some time.

Oscar Outrages: Tom O’Neil and Ray Richmond sound off on past Academy Awards head-scratchers [Watch]
When a couple of Hollywood awards veterans (read: Medicare recipients) get together to slug it out on Zoom about their issues with some past Oscar decisions in advance of the 95th Academy Awards next Sunday. well, let’s just say the dust tends to fly. That’s what happened a few days ago when Gold Derby editor, president and founder Tom O’Neil and news and features editor Ray Richmond met up to weigh in on some of the things that have stuck in their craw during the first 94 years of the ceremony. Watch the video slugfest above.
What did they talk about? Well, O’Neil tossed out the opening salvo in asking if there’s ever been a worse decision and bigger outrage than the one in 1942 that found “Citizen Kane” – “The greatest movie ever made according to every AFI survey,” he noted – losing out for Best Picture to “How Green Was My Valley.

Remember the “McConaussaince” of 2013? If you’re reading this website, of course you do. Gold Derby founder Tom O’Neil referred to it as the time when Matthew McConaughey went from “surfer dude to serious actor” and was justly rewarded by the Academy Awards for his gut-wrenching performance in the docu-drama “Dallas Buyers Club.” A decade later, awards watchers are in the midst of another well-publicized career redemption, this time for Brendan Fraser. Hmm, how does “Fraserssaince” sound?
Following a breakout decade in the 1990s that featured instant classic performances in “Encino Man” (1992), “George of the Jungle” (1997) and “The Mummy” (1999), Fraser’s career experienced several setbacks in the 2000s. “I needed to take some personal time in my career and life,” the actor revealed in a recent interview with our senior editor Christopher Rosen. But that personal time ended last year with he got cast in A24’s “The Whale.”

Hollywood’s greatest romantic movies don’t feature all cooing and kissing, if you think about it. Before Love Can Conquer All, there must be struggle, redemption, confusing mishaps, mayhem and sometimes a sinking boat.
But in many surprising cases, love doesn’t win out. Remember, Doctor Yuri Zhivago dies of a heart attack just moments after he finally rediscovers Lara after three hours of frozen, bloody Russian hell on screen. Sebastian and Mia end up married to other people at the end of “La La Land” and, as everybody by now has heard, Rhett Butler didn’t give a damn about Scarlett O’Hara as soon as the wind was gone.

Will Cate Blanchett’s role as an accomplished orchestra conductor in “Tár” hit the right notes with the Academy, bringing her Oscar #3? Or will Michelle Yeoh’s portrayal of a despondent laundromat owner in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” clean up on March 12? The races for the Best Actress Oscar have been excruciatingly close many of the past few years, and the favorites haven’t always prevailed. And it looks like we’re headed for another cliffhanger.
As of this writing, Gold Derby Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users and All-Star Users are almost evenly split between the two, making it a wash. So allow me to try and scrub away the suspense. Here are five reasons why Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) will win the Best Actress Oscar.

One reason that makes Angela Bassett‘s Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” so unique is that it’s the first-ever such notice for a Marvel Cinematic Universe performance. Another reason is that it marks exactly 29 years since Bassett last contended at the 1994 Academy Awards. Talk about a long time coming.
Three decades ago, Bassett was nominated in Best Actress for her performance as Tina Turner in the biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” a role that won her a Golden Globe. On Oscar night, Al Pacino handed over the trophy to Holly Hunter (“The Piano”), leaving co-nominees Bassett, Stockard Channing (“Six Degrees of Separation”), Emma Thompson (“The Remains of the Day”) and Debra Winger (“Shadowlands”) in her dust. Watch the Oscars flashback video above.

On August 30, 2018, Yorgos Lanthimos’ film “The Favourite” premiered at the Venice Film Festival. It was met with widespread acclaim, winning the Grand Jury Prize. Everyone was buzzing about the breakout performance of its star Olivia Colman as Queen Anne, who would win the Volvi Cup for Best Actress at the festival. Oscar chatter soon followed. At this time, Colman was primarily known as a TV veteran in Britain, and not that well known in the United States. Still, many considered her to be a serious contender to win the Oscar.
However, there was a question as to what category she should compete in. Award pundits were almost unanimous that if Colman decided to compete in Supporting Actress, she would be a slam dunk to win the Oscar. However, if she competed in Lead Actress, she would have an uphill battle because of the fierce competition. Around this time, Lady Gaga...

“The Good Nurse” starring Oscar winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne hits Netflix on October 26, six weeks after its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Deadline awards expert and reviewer Pete Hammond wrote that Chastain is “terrific” and that the movie is “one of the best films of 2022.” With her chances this year still up in the air, let’s look back at Chastain’s wild ride to Oscar glory last March.
In September of 2021, “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” was released nationwide starring Chastain as the flamboyant televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. At that time, Chastain was viewed as a well-respected actress due for Academy recognition. She already had two Oscar nominations under her belt for Best Supporting Actress in 2011’s “The Help” and Best Actress for “Zero Dark Thirty” in 2012.

When James Corden was tapped to take over “The Late Late Show” from Craig Ferguson in 2014, he and executive producers Ben Winston and Rob Crabbe knew they wouldn’t make your typical late-night talk show. For one, the Tony- and BAFTA-winning actor is not a stand-up comedian. Lengthy monologues with barbed zingers on the news of the day was not the tone they were going for, but rather a joyful hangout.
With a more intimate set, in which audience members are closer to the stage, the trio borrowed from “The Graham Norton Show” and features all the guests on stage simultaneously. During our special Spotlight roundtable discussion, Winston shared that the show had trouble booking guests when “The Late Late Show with James Corden” launched in March 2015 because many A-list stars wanted their usual solo segments. “As a fan of the series, and having played the games for the last 20 years, it’s an incredibly daunting task to be put into the position of visual effects supervisor,” admits Dominic Remane, who was tasked with creating the expansive galaxy inhabited by the warring factions at the center of the “Halo” story with his army of visual artisans and technicians. Instead the new episode 6 will air next Tuesday night, November 5, 2019 at approximately 8 pm central standard time on CBS of course. So, be sure to mark down that very important date on your TV show calendars. So, what will CBS air instead of FBI tonight? Actually, they will still be airing FBI, they just won't be airing the new episode 6. Instead, they will air a rerun of the 17th episode of season 1. The title of that episode is "Apex." The official description of it reads like this, "Dana and Maggie try to find justice for the serial killer's victims despite the mayor's insistence to limit the investigation." In our latest Gold Derby editors' slugfest (watch above), we panic over this Sunday's Oscars -- specifically, the three races for the best in short films. As of this writing, our racetrack odds favor victories by "Sanjay's Super Team" (Animated Short), "Body Team 12" (Documentary Short) and "Ave Maria" (Live Action Short). During much of the last year's awards season, I found myself arguing with Gold Derby founder Tom O'Neil over my refusal to predict "Boyhood" to win the Best Picture Oscar.
