The most expensive sporting event in North America was almost undone by the failure of a few screws.
Formula One’s F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix is still reeling from a practice run incident on Thursday. That’s when a car was badly damaged by the screws from a street manhole. The event’s first practice run by Carlos Sainz Jr. was canceled when his vehicle ran over a cover on the temporary street course. It caused extensive damage to the underbody of his Ferrari and Sainz said the piece broke through far enough to damage his seat. F1 then closed the course to inspect the entire circuit, which includes a long portion of the Vegas Strip.
That was merely the latest mishap in the estimated $500 million event. Poor ticket sales, caustic comments from the leading F1 driver, Max Verstappen, and complaints from locals have all put a damper on the event,...

Daniil Medvedev is a big Formula 1 fan, and he used his early Roland Garros exit to attend one of the races.
Tennis and Formula 1 seem to get along really well recently. F1 drivers George Russell and Nyck De Vries attended the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, which is an Atp 1000 event played in Monte-Carlo, Monaco, only a few weeks ago.
But also current and former tennis players have attended F1 races over the past few weeks. Roger Federer was spotted in Paddock during the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, and the Swiss Maestro soon reunited with Juan Martin Del Potro, but also with the Williams sisters, who all attended the race too.
Last week, the Formula 1 world moved to Monaco, where another former player, Maria Sharapova, appeared, this time presenting the winner of qualifying, Max Verstappen, with a pole position award.

Monaco, May 29 (Ians) Dutch driver Max Verstappen kept Red Bull’s 2023 winning record intact by finishing ahead of Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Esteban Ocon of Alpine in a chaotic finish caused by rain shower in the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.
Defending Drivers’ champion Verstappen made a clean getaway when the race began to maintain his pole position advantage over Alonso into the first corner on the street circuit.
But as the race developed and the planned one-and-only stops approached, a rain shower hit the track to turn the encounter on its head, causing a flurry of off-track excursions, brushes with the barriers and pit lane activity.
Alonso pitted while only a portion of the track was damp and initially took on mediums, but intensifying rainfall meant he was forced back in for intermediates, which the rest of the field clambered for as well.

Roger Federer was spotted enjoying the 2023 F1 Miami Grand Prix, wandering around the paddock and taking pictures.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion has been making the most of his retirement, attending high-profile events like the Met Gala as a co-host and now the F1 Miami Grand Prix. His presence at the race comes as no surprise, as Federer is no stranger to the Hard Rock Stadium, having tasted victory there in the past.
Federer won the Atp 1000 tournament in Miami four times and his last triumph at this category came in Miami as the Swiss Maestro triumphed in 2005, 2006, 2017, and 2019. Now, he wasn't there as an athlete but as a spectator and a fan.
The event has attracted a star-studded audience, with big names like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk also making an appearance in the paddock. Federer's attendance adds to the already electric atmosphere, as the tennis legend is known for his charisma and sportsmanship.

Baku (Azerbaijan), April 29 (Ians) Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez claimed the first Sprint race victory of the season at the Baku City Circuit on Saturday, beating Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen to the chequered flag for the maximum eight points on offer in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2023.
With F1’s Sprint format being revised for 2023, a new ‘Shootout’ qualifying session set the grid for the 17-lap dash, which took place in pleasant weather conditions and featured action from start to finish.
One driver who did not take part was F1 rookie Logan Sargeant, who crashed out of the Shootout and was withdrawn from the 100-kilometre Sprint due to the significant damage his Williams car sustained in the incident.
Meanwhile, the grid missed another driver after Alpine made suspension changes on Esteban Ocon’s car under parc ferme conditions, with the team enduring a particularly challenging weekend on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), March 20 (Ians) Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took victory in Sunday’s Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as teammate Max Verstappen salvaged second place after starting 15th.
Starting from pole position, Perez lost out to Fernando Alonso at the first corner, but regained the lead on Lap 4 and was never headed as he took his fifth career win and his first since last season’s Monaco Grand Prix, a Xinhua report said.
Verstappen had started the race well down the order after a driveshaft issue had ruined his qualifying session, but a Safety Car period on Lap 18 helped him vault up the order, and the Dutchman was up to second place behind Perez by Lap 25.
Verstappen complained about problems with his driveshaft late in the race, and though the Dutchman managed to bring the car home and set the race’s fastest lap, he never came within four seconds of Perez.

Bahrain, March 6 (Ians) Red Bull’s Max Verstappen started the 2023 Formula 1 season as he had finished 2022, scoring an ominously easy win in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
Having dominated the 2022 season, Red Bull’s pre-season testing form had suggested that they would remain the team to beat in 2023, and that assertion was borne out when Verstappen and Sergio Perez locked out the front row in Saturday’s qualifying session, reports Xinhua news agency.
Leading the field away from pole position, Verstappen was never threatened as he eased to his first ever victory at the Bahrain International Circuit.
Behind Verstappen, Perez made it a Red Bull 1-2. The Mexican had lost second place to Charles Leclerc at the start, but took the position back by passing the Ferrari on Lap 26.
The final podium place went to a resurgent Fernando Alonso on his first outing for Aston Martin, after surviving contact on Lap 1 from teammate Lance Stroll.

Maranello (Italy), Nov 29 (Ians) Ferrari has announced that Mattia Binotto will leave his position as Team Principal at the end of the year, the Formula 1 team said in a statement on Tuesday.
Binotto joined the team as an engine engineer back in 1995 and took on his current role ahead of the 2019 campaign. After the challenging 2020 and 2021 seasons, Ferrari exploited the arrival of F1’s all-new regulations to emerge as a front-running force — claiming a one-two result with drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at the 2022 opener in Bahrain.
Initial reports of a structural change in the Italian media were denied by Ferrari, but Scuderia released a statement on Tuesday to confirm that Binotto had resigned.
The CEO of Ferrari, Benedetto Vigna said, “I would like to thank Mattia for his many great contributions over 28 years with Ferrari and particularly for leading the team back to a position of competitiveness during this past year.

Russell finished three-tenths back after encountering traffic in the final sector of his push lap on the red-marked rubber.
Leclerc was another tenth adrift in third, followed closely by first-practice pace-setter Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Alongside Verstappen and Sainz, there were returns to the cockpit for Lando Norris (McLaren), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Nicholas Latifi (Williams), Fernando Alonso (Alpine), Mick Schumacher (Haas) and Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo).
Alonso, wearing a Sebastian Vettel tribute helmet, took eighth, just behind teammate Esteban Ocon,...

Mexico City, Oct 29 (Ians) Charles Leclerc has brushed off the heavy crash he suffered during second practice for the Mexico City Grand Prix, admitting that it was “my mistake” but expressing confidence that it will not derail his weekend.
Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari on the entry to Turn 7 in the early stages of FP2 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and dramatically slid backwards into the Turn 8 barriers, picking up significant rear-end damage.
But despite the mishap, Leclerc drew optimism from Ferrari’s pace in the first practice session, when the Monegasque backed up team mate Carlos Sainz in a one-two result.
“To be honest, the feeling is good. We’ve been pretty unlucky in FP1; on my side I had a puncture on the out-lap, so not many laps, but the few that I’ve done I was happy with the car,” Leclerc was quoted as saying by Formula1.

Mexico City, Oct 29 (Ians) George Russell put Mercedes at the top of the timesheets during second practice as Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out in the Mexico City Grand Prix here on Friday.
But it was Russell who led the way with an early lap time of 1m 19.970s on 2022-spec soft tyres, given that the regular drivers who sat out FP1 were permitted to run their own programme for the first half of the session to help them make up for lost time (Russell having handed his car to Nyck de Vries).
Not long after Russell’s pace-setting effort, Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at the entry to the high-speed Turn 7 and dramatically slid backwards into the barriers on the outside of Turn 8, inflicting significant damage on the car’s rear end and bringing out the red flags.
With Leclerc unharmed, his car cleared away and the barriers repaired,...

Austin (Texas), Oct 24 (Ians) Dutch Formula 1 driver and 2022 champion Max Verstappen emerged victorious at the end of an action-packed United States Grand Prix, fending off Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in a tense finale, while his Red Bull team took their first constructors’ title since 2013.
Verstappen’s record-equalling 13th win of the season, and the squad’s championship triumph, came a day after Red Bull co-founder and owner Dietrich Mateschitz passed away — a fifth F1 constructors’ title.
Having moved into the lead at the start, avoiding the drama behind as Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Mercedes’ George Russell clashed at Turn 1, Verstappen had looked set for a comfortable victory at the circuit, dealing with multiple Safety Car restarts and managing his pace expertly, according to formula1.com.
But a slow final pit stop opened the door for Hamilton and the recovering Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, the reigning world champion having to pass...

Suzuka (Japan), Oct 9 (Ians) The governing body of motorsports (Fia) has launched a ‘thorough review’ into the deployment of a recovery vehicle on Suzuka track in wet conditions at the Japanese Grand Prix.
While most of the drivers passed the recovery vehicle at slow speed behind the Safety Car, Pierre Gasly, racing for AlphaTauri, was trying to catch up with the others after making an early pit stop to repair damage to his car.
Gasly, who was penalised for speeding under the red-flag conditions, was joined by other drivers in condemning race officials for a decision they called “unacceptable”.
After the final race, the Fia announced a full investigation into the matter.
“While it is normal practice to recover cars under Safety Car and Red Flag conditions, due to the particular circumstances and also taking into account feedback from a number of drivers, the Fia has launched a thorough review...

Suzuka (Japan), Oct 9 (Ians) Dutch Formula One driver Max Verstappen claimed victory for Red Bull in the Japanese Grand Prix, and took the 2022 world title, after a dramatic late penalty for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc put the championship beyond doubt here on Sunday.
Verstappen, who retained the world title, won a restarted race amid persistent rain at Suzuka, with Leclerc initially looking set to finish second. But the Ferrari driver was penalised for cutting the chicane on the final lap as he defended from the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez, according to formula1.com.
The dramatic points swing means Verstappen heads to the United States Grand Prix, and the final four races of the season, with an unassailable lead over Perez and Leclerc — confirming him as champion.
The race originally got underway as planned, with Verstappen defending from Leclerc after a close run to Turn 1, and only two laps...

Suzuka (Japan), Oct 8 (Ians) Reigning Formula One champion, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took the pole position at the Japanese Grand Prix, enhancing his chances of wrapping up the 2022 world title this weekend, as he edged out the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in qualifying on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Dutchman led after the opening Q3 runs and his initial time of 1 minute 29.304 seconds was just quick enough to seal top spot. He finishing 0.010 seconds clear of Leclerc and 0.057 seconds up on Sainz, as team-mate Sergio Perez completed the top-four, according to formula1.com.
However, a potential setback awaits Verstappen as the stewards will be taking a look at an incident involving the Dutchman and Lando Norris in the early stages of Q3, after the reigning champion darted left at the exit of 130R on a slow lap, forcing Norris to take avoiding action as the McLaren built up speed.
