Fantasia 2020: ‘Hk: Forbidden Superhero’ Review
Image
Stars: Ryohei Suzuki, Fumika Shimizu, Ken Yasuda, Shôta Chiyo, Shunsuke Daitô, Narushi Ikeda, Nana Katase, Tsuyoshi Muro, Shun Oguri, Yoshinori Okada, Jirô Satô, Takashi Tsukamoto | Written by Yûichi Fukuda, Shun Oguri | Directed by Yûichi Fukuda

I love, nay Adore, completely-bonkers Far East flicks be they live-action or animation – hell, some of the first films I ever reviewed professionally (if anything I do can be called a profession) were titles like Big Man Japan and 13: Game of Death. So it’s safe to say that I’m part of the target [Western] audience for a film like Hk: Forbidden Superhero – even moreso given the ridiculous over-the-top ending that sees one of the films villains emerge in a giant mech that looks like a combination of two of my favourite kids TV shows: a Power Rangers Zord and the combiner Devastator from the original 80s Transformers cartoon.

Which is why I absolutely Loved this movie!

Sobini Films, NAACP Team For Shields Green Biopic ‘Emperor’ Release; Freestyle Digital Acquires ‘The Real Exorcist’; Straight Up Films Tackling Youth Mental Health Crisis – Film Briefs
Image
Sobini Films, the production company behind soon-to-released Shields Green biopic Emperor, said it will donate $1 for every digital transaction during the first month of film’s release to the NAACP. Set for a digital release on August 18, via Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, the film is based on the inspiring journey of Green, an American freedom fighter who escaped from slavery and joined the raid on Harper’s Ferry, the key battle of the abolitionist movement which helped spark the beginning of the Civil War and alter the course of American history. “All too often vital narratives, such as Emperor, are left out of Hollywood and our history books,” said Robin Harrison, director, NAACP Hollywood Bureau. “The NAACP is inspired by this portrayal of a true American hero and grateful for the opportunity to put the proceeds from the movie to use in our modern-day fight against systemic racism and racial injustice.

Film Review: Tokyo Ghoul (2017) by Kentaro Hagiwara
As is the tendency in Japanese cinema, particularly during the last decade, another very popular manga/anime is adapted into a live-action movie, in a trend that has produced both great films and huge blunders (Attack on Titan). Let us see what category does “Tokyo Ghoul” falls under.

The story takes place in a world infested by Ghouls, vampire-like creatures that look like humans but are actually monsters, that feed solely on human flesh. The problems instigated by them are so significant that the police has introduced a special branch that deals exclusively with them, with Kureo Mado and his assistant, Kotaro Amon being the enforcers. This world suddenly collapses upon Ken Kaneki, a university student who finally manages to get a date with Rize Kamishiro, only to find that she is a ghoul. In the extreme series of events that follow, Ken transforms into a hybrid of human and ghoul,...

Official Us Trailer for Japanese Faith Healing Drama 'Immortal Hero'
"I still have unfinished worked in this world" Freestyle Digital Media has released an official trailer for a Japanese drama "based on a true story" titled Immortal Hero, from director Hiroshi Akabane. The film is inspired by the real story of author Ryuho Okawa, guided by spiritual beings who helped him recover after a near-fatal heart condition. While recovering, he writes a book that goes on to inspire many others through faith-based healing. "Based on the true story of a man whose near death experience inspires him to choose life... and change the lives of millions." Hisaaki Takeuchi stars in and produced this film, telling the story of a man named Makoto Mioya, pretty much the same person as Okawa. Also starring Yoshimi Ashikawa, Tamotsu Ishibashi, Kei Kinoshita, Tamao Satô, and Fumika Shimizu. I don't know anything about this story, but it seems like some dangerous anti-science propaganda about how...

Trailer for Upcoming Japanese Live Action Film ‘Tokyo Ghoul S’
Based on the popular Japanese series ‘Tokyo Ghoul‘, written and illustrated by Sui Ishida, a live-action film titled Tokyo Ghoul was released in 2017. Tokyo Ghoul introduced us to a college student, Ken Kaneki. He transformed into half human and half ghoul after organ transplant, leading him to the moral conundrum to act on his ghoul vices. ‘Tokyo Ghoul S’ takes the story further in the sequel that is slated to be released on July 19, 2019.

The trailer features a host of familiar faces, other than the protagonist Kaneki Ken, that includes Shunya Shiraishi as Nishiki Nishio, Hiyori Sakurada as Hinami Fueguchi, Nobuyuki Suzuki as Kotaro Amon. Another highlight is the appearance of Matsuda [served as animation director for One Piece Film: Gold] as Shū Tsukiyama, who desperately wants to eat Kaneki. Maika Yamamoto will be replacing Fumika Shimizu in her role as Tōka Kirishima.

‘Tokyo Ghoul’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Masataka Kubota, Fumika Shimizu, Nobuyuki Suzuki, Hiyori Sakurada, Yu Aoi, Shoko Aida, Kenta Hamano, Kunio Murai | Written by Ichiro Kusuno | Directed by Kentaro Hagiwara

Live-action anime adaptions have an interesting history to say the least. They can be great but some have been rather problematic (Dragonball Evolution). One of the latest franchises to receive the live-action treatment is Tokyo Ghoul so the question is: Where does it stand among adaptions?

Tokyo Ghoul is set in an alternate reality where ghouls exist among humans. Ghouls can only survive by feeding on human flesh so because of this, they have to hide themselves in order to avoid capture by the authorities. The story centers on average college student, Ken Kaneki, who is attacked by his date who turns out to be a ghoul. Unfortunately, surviving this may not have been a blessing as Kaneki is transformed into a half-ghoul as a...

Teaser trailer for the live-action ‘Tokyo Ghoul’
A reimagining of the breakout hit manga, Tokyo Ghoul comes to select UK cinemas on January 31st courtesy of Anime Ltd.

Directed by Kentarô Hagiwara, Tokyo Ghoul stars Masataka Kubota (“Death Note” TV Drama, “Rurouni Kenshin”), Fumika Shimizu (“Kamen Rider Fourze”, “The Dragon Dentist”), Yū Aoi (“Rurouni Kenshin”, “The Case of Hana & Alice”), Noboyuki Suzuki (“Gto: Great Teacher Onizuka”), and Yo Oizumi (“Spirited Away”, “Professor Layton” franchise)

Quiet and bookish, Ken Kaneki (Masataka Kubota) was all but dead to a world living in fear of “Ghouls”: creatures who not only share our skin, but crave its taste. When a nightmarish encounter leaves him a human-ghoul hybrid however, Ken finds himself taken under the wing of those he once considered monsters and fighting to protect them from a vengeful hunger that will leave him asking what it truly means to be inhuman.

"Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain." A new Us trailer has arrived online for the Japanese live-action adaptation of the manga series Tokyo Ghoul, which already opened in theaters in Japan back in July. The story is about a Tokyo college student who is attacked by a ghoul, a superpowered human who feeds on human flesh. He then discovers there's an entire race of ghouls and becomes a fugitive on the run, the "one and only existence who knows the two worlds." Starring Yû Aoi, Masataka Kubota, Shun'ya Shiraishi, Nozomi Sasaki, Fumika Shimizu, Yô Ôizumi, and others. One of the quotes in this trailer claims the film is the "best live-action anime adaptation to date." Not sure if that's true but it's worth a look.
