A TikToker with political connections, a speedo-clad model with a Zoolander complex and a reality competition veteran with a grudge against Meghan Trainor were among the standout auditions (for better or worse) as American Idol returned to ABC for its 19th season on Sunday.

Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali has revealed that he has been battling stage-four pancreatic cancer since this past April. Since the 2007 death of singer Kevin DuBrow, Banali has been the only member of the band’s classic lineup to continue to play with the band. He’s also been the group’s most consistent band member since 1982.
“The original prognosis was very scary,” he said in a statement posted to podcast host Mitch Lafon’s Facebook page. “I had quite a battle on my hands and it took a lot,...

Heather Dubrow’s daughter is a rock star in the making -- maybe.
Only Et was invited inside 13-year-old Max Dubrow’s soundcheck at the iconic Whisky-a-Go-Go in Hollywood over the weekend, ahead of her debut performance with legendary rock band Quiet Riot.
“[Drummer] Frankie Banali and James Durbin, who's the new lead singer of Quiet Riot, and who you remember from American Idol … came on my podcast,” Heather explains. “We were talking and hanging out … and then we started talking about it, and Frankie said, 'Is Max still singing?' And I said, yes. And he said, 'Would she ever want to perform with us?' And I went, 'Yeah! That sounds pretty awesome.’”

When James Durbin was on the 2011 season of American Idol, he stood out for two reasons: his high energy rock performances and the fact that he was living with Tourette Syndrome and Asperger Syndrome. Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

Season 10 of American Idol. Top 4 results night. May 12, 2011.
I remember it vividly, joyfully — but not just because the exceptional Haley Reinhart (who’d been enduring egregious sabotage from judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson) improbably survived over rocker dude James Durbin. Mostly, the date is blazed into my memory because of a surprise delivery I’d received a few hours earlier from the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services: Three-month-old foster twins, ridiculously cute boys whom my husband and I had only learned about earlier that morning.

“I’d like to buy a vowel.” That phrase has been a part of pop culture for a while now — “Wheel of Fortune” premiered 41 years ago today. That NBC daytime version of “America’s game” was later followed by the currently airing nighttime syndicated version of the show. The iconic game show was originally hosted by Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford. Jack Clark, Pat Sajak and Vanna White each joined the show in the early 1980s. Other notable January 6 happenings in pop culture history: • 1949: “Gone with the Wind” and “Wizard of Oz” director Victor Fleming died suddenly. Two months later, his “Joan of Arc” starring Ingrid Bergman won two Oscars. • 1957: Elvis Presley performed on “The Ed Sullivan Show” for the third and final time. • 1963: “Oliver!” premiered on Broadway at the Imperial Theater. As American Idol (TV) winds down, the pressure is on. With everyone's eye on the prize, it's anyone's guess as to who will survive. With that being said, America turned in yet another surprising vote last Thursday night, which resulted in the elimination of country girl fave Skylar Laine. Skyler leaves in a respectable fifth place but was picked by many to win, including last year's Idol finalist, rocker James Durbin. "I'm disappointed," he said. "She was my pick to win. She actually has stage presence. She puts on a show." That she does. And this feisty, 18 year-old Mississippi native could really work a crowd. Throughout her run on Idol, she delivered some stand-out performances with Billy Joel's "Shameless," Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder and Lead," and a stirring rendition of Roger Whittaker's "Wind Beneath My Wings" that proved she could two-step her way right out of Country and straight into Pop.

What a fun way to open a show that took quite a wild turn. Idol producers were giving us a treat before giving us the bad news. While an elimination did not in fact take place, this song choice and wildly fun performance was definitely there to soften the blow and send this Idol week out on as a high a note as possible. The top seven did a wonderful job performing Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” so wonderful that it could easily be named as one of the best group performances of the series. Viewers could see that the finalists were all having so much genuine fun. The song in itself is a ball of fun but what really took it to the next level was every single contestant letting loose while still maintaining control of their vocals. It was great! We were also reminded in this performances what...

American Idol Top 7 Results: No Surprise
Right around 8:55 Pm last night, I found myself shaking my head and laughing a little bit. Perhaps American Idol has lost the ability to shock me anymore. Or maybe last night didn't shock me at all. I'll come back to these thoughts after a quick rundown of the show.
The night starts out with the contestants singing "Raise Your Glass" and it's sort of terrible in a good way. I liked some of the vocals, but the dancing was, well, not so good. I also still have yet to get the image of Phillip and Colton on the couch out of my head, thank you ever so much, American Idol.
There's a forgettable Ford video and some joking around with the contestants about tweets and fan mail. I don't mind filler, but we all know Colton and Hollie aren't going to prom with strangers.

It was nothing but drama Thursday night at American Idol. So what did Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler have to say about the jaw-dropping results? Plus what was going on during James Durbin's performance, and what advice does he have for the Idols going forward? We got the scoop! There was no doubt Thursday night's elimination show was going to be a little more dramatic than usual. After producer Nigel Lythgoe took to his Twitter announcing he was "truly shocked" by the results before the show, it was obvious Hollie Cavanagh, who many speculated would be singing her swan song, would be reprieved for one more week. Last night the American Idol Top 7 performed songs released in the past two years. This "theme" was a good one because it allowed some of the contestants to show what kind of artist they'd be if they released a record right now. But last night wasn't a great night for everyone.
Let's hear what our pal Jimmy had to say about last night's show and find out who, if anyone, will be leaving. Remember, the judges still have a save in play for at least two more weeks.
Before we get any results, we get what may be the most awkward group sing in the history of Idol. They're all singing Pink's "Raise Your Glass." And dancing. Awkwardly. Idol, this isn't Glee. They've done this already, and they did it better. TV Fanatic commenters called you out on it last night and I'm calling you out on this insanity right now.

American Idol 2012 eliminated no one,but had to save Jessica Sanchez tonight in round 6. Tonight's elimination show kicked off with the final seven contestants performing Pink's "Raise Your Glass" song. Then they showed a whole bunch of Twitter and mail stuff that the contestants received from fans. After that, host Ryan Seacrest had Hollie Cavanagh stand on one side of the stage, and Jessica Sanchez stand on the other side of the stage, because they decided that they wanted to tease us with the results tonight. After the break, past American Idol contestant James Durbin hit the stage to sing his song, titled, "Higher Than Heaven" from his new album called, "Memories of a Beautiful Disaster." Afterwards,James talked about all the success he's had to lead into a break. After the break, Ryan revealed that Phillip Phillips needed to join Hollie's side of the stage, and Elise Testone...

Whether or not you’re happy with the outcome of this week’s American Idol Top 7 results show, I think we can all agree on one thing: The sight of Phillip Phillips with Colton Dixon’s head in his lap, gingerly stroking his rival’s magnificent coiff as they delivered the line “Why so serious?” in a group rendition of Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” was the stuff of Idol legend.
Actually, maybe we can agree on two things? Because, to paraphrase Randy Jackson, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, America got it wrong with the Bottom 3 this week,...

Haley Reinhart has graced the season 11 stage, as has Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and, just tonight, James Durbin. But American Idol isn't done featuring your faves from seasons past. E! News has exclusively learned who will be performing on the April 26 elimination show. It's... Stefano Langone! The 23-year-old cutie will debut his new single, "I'm on a Roll," on the stage where it all began in two weeks. "I'm a little nervous but so excited for the opportunity," Stefano tells E! News. "It will be almost a year to the day since I was last on." Langone, who finished seventh last season after being a wild card addition to the top 13...

At the top of “American Idol” tonight they flashed a screen that read: Expect The Unexpected. And that was the understatement of the season. Or perhaps of all seasons. It was a shocking results show to say the least.
But, no truer words were spoken, or sang, than those mid-song during the opening number, Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” by the remaining seven. “It’s so on right now,” sang Jessica. And as the stakes get higher and as the numbers diminish,...

Update: Annie’s recap is live.
After a ridiculous results show featuring James Durbin, Jennifer Hudson and Ne-Yo, and Ryan Seacrest clutching a Coke cup at the end of a group number of Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” the judges had to decide whether they would use their One Save of the season. Did they do it? Do you really wanna know? Have you Gotta Have It?
This week’s eliminated Top 7 singer is….
No one!
Shockingly, Jessica Sanchez was the singer who’d received the least amount of votes. (Joshua Ledet and Elise Testone joined her in the bottom three — also shocking!

Is a shocking "American Idol" result still shocking when Nigel Lythgoe and Ryan Seacrest tweet about it hours in advance? Regardless of whether or not the outcome of this week's vote was technically a surprise, it's safe to assume that it'll be a conversation starter, since America's choices were undeniably baffling.
Without further ado, the next contestant to be eliminated was ...
No one.
In the bottom three were Jessica Sanchez, Elise Testone and Joshua Ledet. (Wtf, America?) Jessica was the contestant with the lowest number of votes, and though she was entitled to sing for the judges' save, she only managed to get a few bars into the song before the judges took the stage, with Jennifer Lopez demanding that she hand over the mic. "This is crazy! Go sit down -- yes, we're using the save," she insisted.
After a brief huddle, Randy Jackson spoke for his fellow judges,...

This week on American Idol, the top seven contestants took on songs from 2010 and on…finally songs from the present day across the board. Akon joined Jimmy Iovine to mentor the finalists who all delivered excellent vocals though some still lacked something in their performance. Because of this lack, this live performance show as a whole was not as enthralling as others. Sanchez and two others may have made up for this but it is getting down to the wire and the contestants can’t save all of the bells and whistles for finale night. They won’t get there without it as it’s not just about the vocals. With the usual standouts that there were this week, we can all easily guess who’s going home tonight… or can we?
Cameras visited the hometowns of all of the contestants this week which was a fun look inside each finalists’ home environment.

American Idol: Kris Allen, Kellie Pickler to Perform
American Idol may on looking for the next big thing in music, but it's inviting two of its former contestants back to perform on separate results shows.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that country diva Kellie Pickler will be hitting the stage on tomorrow's episode, performing "Where's Tammy Wynette" from her recently released third album. Pickler has had a fairly solid career since her time on season five, racking up two gold albums, a collaboration with Taylor Swift, and some of the best reviews of her career with 100 Proof.
Meanwhile, season eight champ Kris Allen takes his turn on the April 19th results show, according to TV Line. Allen, who is readying the release of his second album Thank You Camellia on May 22nd, will be performing the first single from that album, "The Vision of Love". After three weeks, nearly 20 million votes and just as many accusations of cheating from various fanbases, it's come down to this: Green Day and Tokio Hotel (who somehow survived the vast international conspiracy their supporters so adamantly insist exists) will meet for the 2012 MTV Musical March Madness championship.
And much like the actual Ncaa final — which sees Kentucky going up against Kansas in a battle of two storied programs — the Mmm championship is also fraught with historical implications: Green Day aim to become the first band to repeat as champs, while Tokio Hotel look to finally take home the title that has so far eluded them.

Well, here we go. It's Elite Eight time in MTV's Musical March Madness, and it's not exactly hyperbole to call it the greatest round of eight in tournament history.
Why? Well, after voting in the Sweet 16 closed Tuesday at midnight, we bid farewell to both Mmm favorites (30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park — you will be missed) and proverbial flies in the ointment (Semi Precious Weapons, F---ed Up, we're sad to see you go), leaving us with only the biggest and baddest bands in the land. And now, finally, they're facing each other, with a spot in the Final Four on the line.
Voting in all Elite Eight matchups is now underway, and polls close at midnight Et Thursday.

When we tipped off the Musical March Madness Sweet 16 on Monday, we told you that things were about to get interesting ... and, well, we weren't lying.
Because as our bracket got smaller, only the best of the best remained. And with so many big-name bands still alive in the quest for the Mmm championship — heavyweights like Green Day, Linkin Park, Paramore and Evanescence — the matchups were only going to get tougher. We knew that this was the round where the mighty would begin to fall.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Because at this point in the tournament, only the strong remain: Our last two champions are both still alive, as are the last two runners-up. There are the perennial powerhouses still looking for that elusive Mmm title, and a few hard-to-kill underdogs, too, each hoping to shock the world.
And with matchups that include Evanescence vs. Linkin Park, Paramore vs. 30 Seconds to Mars and Green Day vs. James Durbin, this year's Sweet 16 is shaping up to be one for the ages. And if your favorite band is still alive, you can help them move one step closer to the Mmm title by voting now.
