Disney revealed on Monday that its musical animated feature Wish, starring Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Chris Pine (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) garnered 13.2 million views globally in its first five days streaming on Disney+.
This amounts to the third biggest premiere on the service, behind those of Encanto and Frozen 2, with a view being defined as total stream time divided by runtime.
Earlier this year securing a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature, Wish takes place in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha (DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe — the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) — to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars,...

“I Love You Forever” has all the trappings of a romantic comedy, for better or worse. In the whipsmart millennial-skewing film where you’re old if you’ve been caught using a third-generation iPhone, there’s something charmingly antiquated about the scene filmmakers Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani set around Mackenzie (Sofia Black D’Elia), a law student who has a pair of bickering best friends (Jon Rudnitsky and Cazzie David) to constantly amuse her and a personal life punctuated by Jessica Simpson and Michelle Branch needle drops. Such retro touches aside, their subversive spin on the genre doesn’t seem as if it could’ve been made any earlier than 2024, amid talk that emotional manipulation in a relationship can be every bit as pernicious as physical abuse, as Mackenzie experiences when she falls for the wrong guy.
For previous generations, the wrong guy was more likely to resemble Mark Wahlberg in “Fear,...

If there's a constant, all-encompassing rule to the universe, it's that absolutely nothing is built to last. If all matter is doomed to the inescapable fate of entropy, and every living thing eventually dies, then what hope do such lovely intangibles as love, desire, and dreams have?
Well, to quote that ersatz Disney prince, Vision, "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." Love, dreams, and wishes are beautiful almost because of the fact that they can't always come true; it's the hope, the having of these wishes, that makes life worth living more than merely the attainment of them. Walt Disney and the studio that still bears his name have been a proponent of this principle for Disney (the man's) entire life and Disney (the studio's) existence to date. And now that the studio has reached the milestone of sticking around for 100 years, it's only natural that they'd wish to...

To celebrate the release of Disney’s Wish, which comes 100 years after the company was founded in 1923, Walt Disney Animation Studios gave press an inside look at the place where the magic happens at its famous Burbank headquarters (yes, the one with the sorcerer hat).
As a part of the experience, select groups were treated to a private drawing class with Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay, production and costume designer on Wish, where they learned to draw the film’s character Star.
During the drawing class, Sastrawinata-Lemay explained how years of Disney Animation history went into the designs for every character and environment in Wish. “Star’s face shape is a heart, which is also inspired by the face of Mickey Mouse,” Sastrawinata-Lemay explained. “And you will notice Star does not talk and spreads magic dust, just like Tinker Bell.”

Chris Pine has admitted he was a bit nervous to perform opposite Ariana DeBose in the upcoming Disney animated film Wish.
Though the actor showed off his vocal cords in 2014’s Into the Woods, he recently told Entertainment Tonight, “It’s just not something I do on a daily.”
“When you’re singing opposite Ariana…it’s a big deal,” Pine added. But when DeBose learned her singing partner was doubting his ability, she had nothing but praise for him and his talents.
“He can sing! He can absolutely sing,” she told Et. “When I found out that I was cast in this film, I was like, ‘Oh!’ I mean, did you see him in Into The Woods?… I think Chris is one of those examples of not understanding just how talented he is.”

Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Los Angeles premiere of Walt Disney Animation’s latest film “Wish” on Wednesday night was set to be a star-free affair — well, save for the literal star on which the movie is based.

Of course, that meant the animated movie’s cast — including Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine — weren’t allowed to make a quick change into their red carpet finest and hustle over to the El Capitan Theatre for a screening set to begin at 7 p.m., but the mood was jubilant nonetheless.

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney Music Group today released the new song “Welcome to Rosas,” performed by Ariana DeBose and the talented cast of Wish. Now available on SiriusXM’s Disney Hits Channel 302, YouTube, Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, and all digital service providers, “Welcome to Rosas” is the third of five songs being revealed as part of a weekly “Wish Wednesdays” music campaign ahead of the film’s launch in U.S. theaters on November 22. Check out the video for the song above!

After 100 years of making animated film musicals about talking animals, princesses, classic literary characters, superheroes, and even space pirates, there's not a whole lot of ground that Disney has never covered before. With the upcoming "Wish," however, the House of Mouse will ring in its centennial by focusing on the very idea of wishes. It's a motif that's appeared time and time again in the studio's work, yet it's rarely interrogated. What even is a "wish," really? Who decides which wishes come true and which ones do not? And if wishes can change the course of one's life, what does that even mean for those whose greatest wishes are never granted? It's a real existential conundrum, the further you go down this rabbit hole.
No doubt, you'll be shocked to learn that Disney hasn't fashioned "Wish" as an Ingmar Bergman-esque rumination on these questions and what they say about the human condition.

"It's good to see you outta the house, Armen!" Paramount has revealed an official trailer for an animated musical comedy movie titled Under the Boardwalk. “Wish” is nearly here. And there’s a brand-new trailer for the 62nd Disney animated feature, which you can watch above.
Based on an original idea, with a script co-written by “Frozen” filmmaker Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore, follows Asha (Ariana DeBose) and direction from Disney legend Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a land where wishes come true. She sets off on an adventure with an anthropomorphic wishing star and a talking goat.
Disney also revealed the full cast for the movie, which includes Jennifer Kumiyama as Asha’s dearest friend, Dahlia, who’s an accomplished baker and unofficial leader of their group; Evan Peters as the strong guy with a big heart and bigger yawn,...

A slow-motion panic attack in movie form, “The Young Wife” swirls around the hopes and doubts of a young woman (a radiant Kiersey Clemons) on the day of her “non-wedding.” It’s not a moment of matrimony, nor is it quite a commitment ceremony, but instead a day-long party, a celebration of the love between Celestina and her wishy-washy boyfriend River (Leon Bridges), who’s hours late. Set 10 years in the future and imbued with an ineffably otherworldly glow that almost makes you feel like you’ve been planted on another planet, “The Young Wife” is , and one with plenty of spiky characters and admirable visuals to pluck from.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details about the Season 1 finale of Fox’s The Big Leap.
The Season 1 finale of Fox’s The Big Leap offered its share of drama and happy endings for many of its characters on Monday night while leaving plenty of wiggle room to continue should the network choose to renew the series.
The episode titled “We Make Our Own Light” picks up after Paula’s (Piper Perabo) untimely death in last week’s episode that saw the show within a show with no power and everyone left in the dark. Amid a mad dash to get the show back on track, Nick (Scott Foley) reveals he’s more than a soulless leach focused on personal gain—though it doesn’t last very long.
But the show must go on, as they say. The dance groups get creative with lighting options as Gabby (Simone Recanser), the white swan,...

Some people sleep on their sides, others on their back.
But a frustrating number have slept on The Big Leap, which is easily one of the cleverest breakout series on network TV.
No other series thus far has adequately captured the perfect, most resonant, and necessary (post) pandemic tone.
And whether it was always the show's intention or they rose to the occasion, The Big Leap tapped into something absent from network TV and not for lack of trying.
It's not this writer's first foray into commending a series for providing a perfect blend of escapism, authenticity, humor, joy, and entertainment in a show that's criminally underrated and deserving of more recognition.
I'm the same person who dared folks to appreciate the magic of the Jason Ritter-led Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and begged for a Pitch renewal.
I penned a piece questioning why networks and audiences are allergic...

What prevents Fox from renewing this series? Sadly, years of being a TV Fanatic means I understand the answer to that even if I hate it with every fiber of my being.
What prevents more people from watching this series? One could guess that some fear getting attached to a series, lest a network cancels it, failing to consider that by not tuning in, they subject something brilliant to that very heartbreaking fate.
But even factoring that in, the answer to that question eludes me. As Nick astutely mentioned in The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 9, fear prevents many things, but for we who fearlessly embarked on this journey with this series, our reward is gorgeous hours like this one.
Each passing installment of this series evokes a similar bittersweetness that this hour adequately explored. Dr. Seuss' problematic nature aside, there's wisdom in the quote, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Fox launched a couple of new hour scripted series last season but, due to low ratings, didn't end up keeping either of them. Will the network's newest effort, The Big Leap, be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
