YA is dead — at least, that was one prevailing thought after a string of popular young adult books failed to garner success on screens in 2016. Studio executives blamed the slew of unsuccessful adaptations on a new generation of readers no longer interested in coming-of-age stories. But as YA film and TV once again take top billing and viewership for the first time in nearly a decade, several YA authors who dominated the category tell Rolling Stone interest in young people’s stories never waned — filmmakers and executives finally realized they...

Hollywood moviemaking has always been a numbers game, and right now the winning number appears to be two.
Zack Snyder is locking picture on part one of December’s Rebel Moon, his two-part space opera for Netflix. Christopher McQuarrie, the filmmaker behind Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, retreated to a house in the northeast in recent months to edit what he’s shot so far of his follow-up. And once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu has just a few days left of principal photography on the first of his two Broadway adaptations. Then there’s Dune: Part Two (delayed by the strike until March), a sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (no release date in sight) and Kevin Costner’s two-part western Horizon, hitting theaters six weeks apart next summer.
These two-parters can serve both art and commerce, say those who work on them.

This month’s science fiction brings us into the world of Greek myth adaptations, plus a cozy apocalypse and a virtual reality haunting. Here are our top picks for the best new science fiction books in February 2023.
Users by Colin Winnette
Type: Novel
Publisher: Soft Skull
Release date: February 21
Den of Geek says: Projecting forward from our current virtual reality and social media trends, Users looks like a thoughtful exploration of parasocial relationships or the way real ones can turn into odd hauntings as social media dredges up once-treasured memories. In contrast to World Running Down, Users isn’t so much a good Valentine’s Day read as an exploration for when relationships and the technology that facilitates them break into familiar but bizarre pieces.
Publisher’s summary: Miles, a lead creative at a midsize virtual reality company known for its “original experiences,” has engineered a new product called The Ghost Lover.

Exclusive: Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group Motion Pictures has tapped screenwriter Evan Daugherty (Divergent) to pen the sci-fi action feature, The Ultimate Weapon. The film based on a story by Allen will be financed by Amgmp, with exec producers to include Allen, Carolyn Folks, Jennifer Lucas and Matthew Signer.
The Ultimate Weapon takes place in a version of the present day where World War II is not over. In fact, history has shown us that the Nazis were actually researching a weapon far greater than the atomic bomb, investing heavily in the ability to achieve time travel. Pic sees them use that ability to travel to the present to bring back technology that they can use in the past to win the war. Film fans love to speculate on what canceled movie productions would have become. What would it have been like to see Steven Spielberg's science fiction epic "Robopocalypse," Quentin Tarantino's Vega Brothers movie, Stanley Kubrick's ambitious "Napoleon" biopic, or Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Dune" adaptation? Would they be everything fans imagined them to be? Or crushing disappointments? While it's fun to speculate, we can't put our faith into something that doesn't exist. Likely, these films wouldn't have lived up to fans' massive expectations.

Director Yulya Litinskaya latest collaboration with Musician Tosya Chaikina is a powerfully dark and haunting music video for Chaikina’s single Arrows Have Struck in the Heart, which sees a lone protagonist, played by Chaikina, drift through a world in decay, one where people are continuously on the run fleeing from a constant volley of arrows. It’s a video with an almost ghostly sensibility which manages to blend moments of intense naturalism into otherwise purely expressionistic choreography, all captured with a dedicated eye for expert framing and composition. Dn caught up with Litinskaya, who is currently stuck in Russia and unable to return to her home country of Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict, as her music video appears online, to learn more about her desire to capture the frustrating ambivalence she sees in the world through expression, dance, costume and story.

Divergent—both the 2011 book and the 2014 film—belongs to a simpler time. A time when our fictional dystopias weren’t in such close competition with our real-life dystopia. If you’d like to spend a few hours escaping into that simpler time, Divergent book author Veronica Roth just recorded a special commentary track to accompany the first Divergent movie, and it’s filled with insight into the adaptation process. Generally, it’s just a nice way to pretend like you are at the movie theater (remember movie theaters?), watching a movie with some friends (remember friends?)—except you don’t have to whisper.
Topics discussed include casting Shailene Woodley in the role of protagonist Tris, Ashley Judd’s dogs, and why certain decisions were made as these bestselling books were adapted into blockbuster movies. After taking readers through a dystopian world in her Divergent series, author Veronica Roth introduces readers to a version of our world that has survived an apocalyptic event, but still faces its greatest threat to come in Chosen Ones. In addition to its physical and Kindle release, Chosen Ones is out today in audiobook format from Audible, and to celebrate, we've been provided with an exclusive audio clip in which Dakota Fanning narrates Roth's latest adventure.
Here's what Veronica Roth had to say about Dakota Fanning narrating her new novel:

Deadwater Fell is the new British crime show making waves. Here’s why you should be watching.
“The British do so many things well: cucumber sandwiches, fancy hats, sketch comedy. But perhaps their strongest export to date is their seemingly inexhaustible supply of murder mystery dramas. From Broadchurch to Grantchester to Sherlock to Luther, the Brits have a knack for gripping whodunits jam-packed with excellent actors and dreary scenery.”

America needs to have a plan for how to transition out of the coronavirus quarantine.
“Most of the world outside the United States has reached the end of the beginning of the novel coronavirus pandemic. New confirmed infections and deaths have plateaued and are beginning to fall in some of the hardest-hit countries like Italy and Spain, and Germany is beginning to draw up plans for re-starting its economy.”

It’s been a while since we heard anything about the future of the Divergent series after the previous installment, 2016’s Allegiant, was released in cinemas. Lots of rumours have circulated about what direction the franchise would take and it looks like we may have some answers this week.
While still in the “early stages” of development, Deadline states that Ascendant is set to find a new home with Starz and that the conclusion is being written and executive produced by Adam Cozad (Tarzan) and directed by Age of Adaline helmer Lee Toland Krieger, both of whom were attached the film version was planned.
The series began life on the big screen in 2014 with Divergent, based on the hit novels by Veronica Roth, which wowed audiences as part of the young-adult explosion at the time and grossed almost $290million at the worldwide box office. Then in 2015 the sequel,...

Remember Divergent? The franchise based on the Veronica Roth series which crashed and burned before it was able to conclude its story? Yeah, you know the one. Both Divergent and Insurgent did well enough at the box-office, so Lionsgate did what everyone was doing at the time and attempted to extend the franchise by splitting the final novel into two movies. However, upon release, Allegiant received... Read More...

The Divergent movies were never as big (or as good) as the Hunger Games series, but those first two films held onto those dystopian young adult coattails and became moderate successes at the box office, certainly justifying the existence of the third movie, Allegiant. Unfortunately, the third adaptation of Veronica Roth’s popular book series was a box office […]

It’s kind of a shame what happened with Lionsgate’s Divergent series. Based on Veronica Roth’s Ya novels, hopes were initially high for the films, given how successful the books were, and with a studio who’d already proven they knew how to navigate the tricky waters of the genre a few years prior with The Hunger Games series, all signs pointed to another mega hit that would dominate the box office for the next little while.
Divergent released in 2014 and though far from perfect, it was a wholly enjoyable adaptation that laid the groundwork for an exciting new franchise. Unfortunately, though, it was all downhill from there. The next film, Insurgent, was mediocre at best and the decision to split the last book, Allegiant, into two separate outings turned a lot of people off. As expected, the first part bombed both critically and commercially, while the second part,...

As The Divergent Series draws to a truncated conclusion, one which will reportedly unfold on the small screen as opposed to its cinematic predecessors, lead star Shailene Woodley is beginning to cast the net in search of new roles. Last we reported on Lionsgate’s proposed TV finale, Woodley expressed reservations about the reconfigured fourth installment, before conceding that the studio is still in the process of finalizing negotiations with its leading cast.
Still nothing to report on that front just yet, but we do have some exciting news beyond the confines of Veronica Roth’s Ya series. According to Deadline, the Shailene Woodley-led survival pic Adrift is on the verge of landing a distribution deal with Stx Entertainment. Where in the world is Divergent? It was reported in July that Lionsgate was looking into possibly making the last film in the series for TV with the aim of launching a television show based on Veronica Roth's books. At the time, it was also reported that Shailene Woodley and her co-stars would appear in the TV production, which would also include introducing new characters. Miles Teller, who starred in the franchise as Peter, says he has yet to hear from the studio. "I have not talked to anyone," he told me last night at the premiere of his new real-life boxing drama Bleed For This (in theaters Nov. 18). The tides finally began to turn against big-budget adaptations of post-apocalyptic Ya novels earlier this summer when Lionsgate reportedly scrapped its plan to make a big-screen version of Ascendant—the final book in Veronica Roth’s Divergent series. The previous film, Allegiant, was relatively well-received, but it failed to live up to the impossible box-office benchmark established by the Hunger Games movies. Because of this, Lionsgate decided to finish up the series with a TV movie and possible ongoing TV series, which would at least give it a chance to finish the story without having to pay for all of that expensive movie stuff like film reels, those trailers with the glittery star on the door, and—as it turns out—big-name actors.

Shailene Woodley has left the door open to her making the final Divergent movie...
Last week, Shailene Woodley had become the latest to cast doubt on whether she'd make the jump from the big screen Divergent movies to the planned television finale for the films. As things stand, Ascendant - the planned fourth movie, and in theory the end of the box set - is now a TV project, with the aim of it kicking off a television series. Woodley had said that "I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show".
In a new appearance on the Today show in the Us, Woodley has clarified her comments, and has held the door open to a return in Ascendant. "Well, I mean, if it's a movie", she said, adding that "they haven't finalised any decisions, so it's actually a moot point to talk about it now,...

In a move that is divisive, at best, Lionsgate is reportedly seeking to alter their plan for The Divergent Series of films, by moving the franchise to television. In a new approach, the story would wrap up with a TV movie, and segue into a spin-off episodic drama series. The change in planning is in response to the lower than expected box office performance of the third franchise instalment, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, as well as diminishing returns in terms of critical response for the entire series.
The story is set in a dystopian world, where people are essentially destined to be part of distinct factions based upon their personal virtues. The lead character is Tris Prior, who discovers that she is Divergent, and that a conspiracy exists to destroy all those that share that label. “The Divergent Series: Ascendant” is set to be released in theaters in June of 2017, but according to a new report from Variety, that might not be the case anymore. It seems that Lionsgate is now planning to wrap up the “Divergent Series” with a TV movie and a spinoff series.
No deals have been made yet and negotiations are in the early stages, though the studio is getting ready to pitch the project to networks. A source told Variety that Lionsgate’s television group will handle the production.
Shooting for the fourth and final film was set to begin this summer, but that was before the last movie, “Allegiant,” was a box office disaster and caused the team to rethink its strategy.

The Divergent Series movie franchise has hit a wall, as Lionsgate is planning on nixing the feature film in favor of a more budget-friendly TV movie that will lead to much more. Come inside for more information.
Originally set to hit theaters next summer, the final film of The Divergent Series, Ascendant, may actually become a TV movie, according to an exclusive report by Variety. While that would usually be a death sentence for a franchise, Lionsgate isn't necessarily done with the intellectual property.
Variety reports that Lionsgate's plans are to release Ascendant on the small screen, introducing a new group, and having those characters be the focal point of a spin-off either on a network or a streaming service. Whether or not stars like Shailene Woodley or Theo James would return remains to be seen.

Lionsgate executives admitted Thursday that perhaps the studio “rushed” the disappointing Ya sequel “Allegiant” movie into theaters. “Maybe we rushed the third movie a bit instead of taking our time with it,” CEO Jon Feltheimer said during Thurday’s conference call to Wall Street analysts. “We wanted to hit a date.” The box office and critical results for the film, the third in a series starring Shailene Woodley and based on Veronica Roth‘s dystopian young-adult best-sellers, reflected exactly that. The movie grossed just $66 million domestically, less than half what “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” had the year before. The company posted lackluster fiscal.
