Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer quickly captivated audiences around the globe upon its debut on Netflix. However, what intrigued viewers most was the real-life events that served as the show’s inspiration. As fans attempt to uncover the identity of the sexual abuser who inspired a character, the situation has escalated to the point where legal action is being considered, creating a whirlwind of controversy that shows no signs of calming down.

Jessica Gunning, who plays the haunting stalker Martha in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” says creator and star Richard Gadd was on her radar even before she auditioned for the show — ever since she saw his one-man show “Monkey See Monkey Do” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
“I just thought it was one of the most profound things I’ve ever seen really on stage,” she said. “Then I tried to go and see ‘Baby Reindeer’ the play, but it was sold out. So, I actually bought the play text, which is a bit Martha of me.”
Gadd, Gunning, actor Nava Mau, director Weronika Tofilska and editor Peter Oliver served as panelists Tuesday night at the DGA Theater Complex for Netflix’s FYC screening and panel for the limited series. The streamer submitted “Baby Reindeer” for consideration to be nominated for best limited series at the Emmys, along with Gadd to...

The Baby Reindeer phenomenon has landed in Los Angeles.
On the heels of Richard Gadd’s limited series becoming a certified sleeper hit by coming in at No. 1 on Netlfix’s English-language TV rankings for a third consecutive week, the streamer welcomed its creator and star to the West Coast. Gadd is making the media rounds this week to discuss the critically acclaimed series inspired by his real-life stalker of six years, and he’s doing so alongside Jessica Gunning, the actress earning raves as the woman who terrorized him.
The pair posted up Tuesday evening on a stage inside the Directors Guild of America with actress Nava Mau and two key members of the Baby Reindeer team — director Weronika Tofilska and editor Peter Oliver — for the show’s first-ever panel discussion. Moderator Tonya Mosley of NPR’s Fresh Air steered the conversation (in front of a capacity crowd of...

After earning rave reviews on the festival scene before landing in theaters last month, Love Lies Bleeding, a revenge thriller from Saint Maud director Rose Glass, has released at home on VOD this week.
Love Lies Bleeding is now available for digital purchase ($24.99) and rental ($19.99)! We’ve also learned that the film is coming to Blu-ray on June 6, 2024.
Katy O’Brian stars alongside Kristen Stewart (Underwater) in the new film from A24, which is said to be “a romance fueled by ego, desire and the American Dream.”
I wrote in my Sundance review, “With a visionary at the helm and an impressive cast willing to follow along with every wild turn thrown at them, Love Lies Bleeding makes for a captivating ‘80s set crime thriller unafraid to get deeply weird and ultra-violent.” Expect things to get weird and violent: “That it devolves into madness, complete with humor and surreal imagery, means...

Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” is a new miniseries with a twist.
“Baby Reindeer,” released April 11, is based on Scottish comedian, actor and writer Richard Gadd’s own experience with a stalker and sexual predator in his 20s. Gadd stars as Donny Dunn, who is stalked by a woman named Martha he met in a bar he worked at.
The official Netflix synopsis reads, “When a struggling comedian shows one act of kindness to a vulnerable woman, it sparks a suffocating obsession which threatens to wreck both their lives.”
Gadd said he was stalked for four years by a woman who called him “Baby Reindeer.” At the beginning, Gadd and his friends didn’t think much of it, until things started to amp up. He was harassed with 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters. She also sent him gifts including a reindeer toy, sleeping pills, a woolly hat and boxer shorts.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains major spoilers for “Love Lies Bleeding” and its ending.]
If you’ve already seen “Love Lies Bleeding,” there are surely a few images from the film you’re still scraping off your brain. Rose Glass’ 1980s Southwest-set midnight movie centers on the volatile but nevertheless unavoidable romance between Lou (Kristen Stewart), a bored lesbian gym manager, and Jackie (Katy O’Brian), the ‘roid-raging bodybuilder who sweeps into town to save Lou from her small-town ennui.
But as the pair fall in love, the corpses pile up — and so do the heads as, after a steroid-addled Jackie brutally murdered the be-mulleted wife-beater JJ (Dave Franco), who’s married to the abuse-dazed Beth (Jena Malone), who also happens to be Lou’s sister. Meanwhile, hanging over everything is Lou and Beth’s father, the gnarly, bug-eating gangster Lou Sr. (Ed Harris), with his share of secrets, in the form of bodies and smuggled arms in the depths of a nearby canyon.

Ready for a cinematic “walk on the wild side”? Perhaps something in the film noir category, but not similar to something you’d run across on one of those nostalgia streaming channels. Maybe something set just before the turn of the century rather than the decade post-wwii. Sure, this new flick is a crime thriller involving multiple murders, but that’s just one aspect. Let’s see, there’s a big (truly huge) daughter/father conflict so it’s a family drama. And it’s certainly a romance ala’ girl meets girl. Oh, and one of them is seeking fame in the competitive world of female bodybuilding events. Now, that’s really different and certainly unique. Mix all those genres and subplots together and you get an insight into the provocative title, Love Lies Bleeding.
Oh, the backdrop year is in the 20th century, way back in 1989. We first meet...

One of the big casualties of the 2020 pandemic was the horror movie Saint Maud, whose release was delayed by almost a full year. Her newest movie, Love Lies Bleeding, is here.
Set in New Mexico in the 1980s, Love Lies Bleeding is about a young woman named Lou (Spencer’s Kristen Stewart) who befriends a female bodybuilder named Jackie (Katy O’Brian from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) who is passing through town on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. “Love Lies Bleeding” director Rose Glass can’t speak to the very online debate over movie sex scenes in the 21st century — whether audiences want to see them, and whether they’re necessary to films at all.
“In terms of speaking to the wider conversations about cinema, sex, and audiences, I don’t feel qualified to know. I know I’ve sort of read that people are saying that younger audiences are more sex-averse or sex-scene-cynical, but I’ve only read that in articles. I don’t know how true it is,” Glass told IndieWire over Zoom.

After garnering visceral reactions from the Sundance crowd in January, Kristen Stewart’s Love Lies Bleeding has opened to a whopping 91%, becoming her second highest-rated film in the Tomatometer. Announced back in 2022, the Twilight Star joined forces with Saint Maud director Rose Glass for her first collaboration with A24.
And while fans are thrilled by it, following Glass’ work on the acclaimed horror Saint Maud, her only feature film prior to this one, it’s reasonable to see why this might not be for everyone.

Ever since Rose Glass set cinemas alight in 2019 with her feature directorial debut, Saint Maud, there has been great excitement for what is next and Love Lies Bleeding does not disappoint.
It is bold, brutal and in some parts ridiculous, but even those elements work well with the grounded world Glass has created. Nothing is approached with a half-measure – especially the violence and sex.
Opening the 20th edition of the Glasgow Film Festival (Gff), it comes as no surprise it sold out speedy-quick in what is its UK premiere.
This ’80s romance-thriller doesn’t really feel like your typical movie set in that decade. This is a dark, almost bleak, setting of a small town in Albuquerque. You aren’t battling against an avalanche of the usual cliché styles, colour, sounds and fashion of the era.
It’s grounded with its own style and stays clear of tropes. If it...

In great times of despair, come great surprises.
That’s what happened in early 2022 as the specialty box office was looking to regain its footing after the Omicron variant: Just when we thought all was lost, A24 showed up with a rare gem, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and provided arthouses some much-needed heat. The movie grossed $77M stateside, the best ever for A24.
In the wake of two strikes leaving their brutal marks on the box office, arthouses could use a savior again.
Rose Glass wows at Sundance.
And that could be with A24’s steroid- filled lesbian love crime spree action thriller, Love Lies Bleeding from filmmaker Rose Glass. The movie hits theaters in limited release on March 8 and goes wide on March 15. If anything, A24 knows how to harness cool and expand an audience for it. In fact, many moviegoers are mere fans of the brand alone...

“There’s something so completely undeniable about it. There’s just nothing to hide behind. You only get looking like that one way and it’s by an undeniable amount of work,” says director Rose Glass of bodybuilding, the sport that is one of the focal points of her sophomore feature, Love Lies Bleeding.
The film, the follow-up to her incredibly well-received body horror Saint Maud, follows Lou (Kristen Stewart) as the manager of a gym in middle-of-nowhere America who falls for a bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) after she blows into town on her way to a competition in Vegas. The two quickly run into trouble with Lou’s father (Ed Harris), an arms dealer who runs the local crime ring.
Ahead of the Berlin Film Festival, where the film will premiere on Sunday, Feb. 18, Glass talked to THR about bodybuilding and Saturday Night Fever influences.

Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian are delivering a gut punch of a crime film.
The duo are at the center of Rose Glass’ “Love Lies Bleeding,” which was one of IndieWire’s must-see films from Sundance 2024. “Saint Maud” writer/director Glass helms the drama about reclusive gym manager Lou (Stewart), who falls in love with bodybuilder Jackie (O’Brian). The hitch? Their romance comes in the wake of Lou’s criminal family and unleashes a murderous rampage.
Dave Franco, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, and Ed Harris also star in the film, which is co-written by Weronika Tofilska.
Per A24, “Love Lies Bleeding” is billed as an “off-the-wall, rambunctious lesbian love story” set in a suburban small town that has a “heightened Americana sensibility.”
The feature is a co-production between A24 and Film4. A24 produced alongside Andrea Cornwell for Lobo Films and Oliver Kassman for Escape Plan Productions.

Filmmaker Rose Glass has an audacious way of exploring obsession, pushing it to extremes in beguiling, genre-defying ways. Her feature debut, Saint Maud, centered on a nurse who took her religious fanaticism to extremes, compounded by an obsession with her latest patient. Glass’s sophomore effort, Love Lies Bleeding, wields obsession as a destructive coping mechanism for the pain that love can inflict. With a visionary at the helm and an impressive cast willing to follow along with every wild turn thrown at them, Love Lies Bleeding makes for a captivating ‘80s set crime thriller unafraid to get deeply weird and ultra-violent.

Sundance: First Reactions to Kristen Stewart’s “Brutal, Triumphant” Lesbian Pic ‘Love Lies Bleeding’
The official description for Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding on the Sundance Film Festival website calls the A24 pic “an off-the-wall, rambunctious lesbian love story” that “crashes into a family drama of the darkest ilk in this muscular thriller.” It’s also cited for “violence, graphic sexual content and other mature content.”
It’s a pretty spot-on description — plus some surprise scenes best saved for the film’s March 8 release — and the capacity crowd seated inside Park City’s Eccles Theater on Saturday night greeted the world premiere with an enthusiastic response and partial standing ovation. A man seated next to The Hollywood Reporter relayed a single adjective to a friend after the credits rolled: “Crazy.” Other times as the action unfolded, there were cheers, wows, fidgeting as one character’s face is destroyed in an act of violence, and maybe a few laughs at unintended moments.

When a magnificently gnarled Ed Harris, wearing stringy Argus Filch hair and chomping on a horned beetle in a moment of psychotic rage is far from the weirdest thing in a movie, you know you’re in for a wild experience. That’s what Brit director Rose Glass delivers in Love Lies Bleeding, a lesbian neo-noir drenched in brooding nightscapes, violent crime and more hardcore KStew cool than has ever been packaged in such a potent concentrate. Seriously, is there anyone who doesn’t want to watch Kristen Stewart flicking back a greasy shag, driving an old pickup and chain-smoking in grubby tank tops?
Glass instantly established herself as a singular talent with her 2021 debut, Saint Maud, an audacious shot of undiluted terror and spiraling insanity that announced an idiosyncratic new voice in horror. All film noirs start with a bad decision. Love Lies Bleeding, Rose Glass’s follow-up to her cult horror movie Saint Maud and the most case-hardened Southwestern pulp this side of Jim Thompson, kicks off with a doozy. Lou (Kristen Stewart) cleans toilets and works the desk at a gym in New Mexico. Jackie (Katy O’Brian), a would-be competitive bodybuilder, has just breezed into town and strolls in for a workout. Soon, these two will spend long nights ravaging each other, dumping corpses, dodging bullets, and running for their lives.

Rose Glass follows Saint Maud with a queer thriller about a bodybuilder and her gym owner girlfriend. Watch the first Love Lies Bleeding trailer here.
Saint Maud announced Rose Glass as a major new talent in British genre filmmaking. The final few seconds of her 2019 horror film still haunt me, but for her next film, Glass is doing something completely different. The London-born director is swapping religious horror for a queer love story between a bodybuilder and gym owner with a dodgy past – and we couldn’t be more excited.
Take a look at the first trailer for Love Lies Bleeding.
Set a trailer for any film to Bronski Beat’s Smalltown Boy and you’ve got my interest. If you also add a tagline like “Revenge gets ripped”, I’m all yours. Love Lies Bleeding does both, and the trailer is also deliciously steamy and violent.

Exclusive: Generation star Nava Mau will star in Netflix’s upcoming drama series Baby Reindeer.
The streaming series is based in writer-creator Richard Gadd’s real life experience of a warped relationship that heavily impacted him and ultimately forced him to face a dark buried trauma.
Mau will play Teri, the partner of Donny (Gadd), who becomes embroiled in his relationship with his stalker Martha, who will be played by Jessica Gunning, as we revealed at the time.
Mau was a key member of the ensemble cast that made up the Lena Dunham-produced Generation (stylized Genera+ion), which is now on Tubi after Warner Bros. Discovery pulled it from streamer HBO Max as it sought to cut costs and sell many of the shows made for the platform.
She has also appeared in Waking Hour and Work.
Shooting On Baby Reindeer began back in August, and has now wrapped.
